A Guide To Summer Plants By Ronald Scaglia rscaglia@antonnews.com ong Island gardeners, the time has finally arrived. Since the depressing days of last autumn, when the beautiful gardens succumbed to the cooler weather, gardeners across the region have been anxiously waiting to replant their gardens and bring back brightly colored yards and vivid landscapes. Well, according to Cornell Cooperative Extension, the final frost date for our region has passed and it is finally time to plant. To help Long Islanders plan their masterpieces, below is a guide to some of the more popular plants that gardeners decorate their properties with. Walt Dworkin, green goods sales associate with Hicks Nurseries in Westbury, shared some insights into some of the more popular late spring and summer plants.

Impatiens According to Dworkin, these are the most popular annuals. He says that these plants will do best in semi-sunny to shady conditions. To achieve a nice look, Dworkin recommends using impatiens as a border in front of other shrubs. He also says that impatiens look great in pots and can be used as hanging plants or to decorate a stoop. They also look terrific in strawberry planters. Impatiens are available in a large assortment of colors including red, purple, pink, lavender and orange.

New Guinea Impatiens As with the impatiens, New Guinea impatiens are often used as borders or in hanging baskets. They are available in lavender, white, salmon, red, or as Dworkin says, “Just about every color

but yellow.” They are annuals like impatiens but differ in that New Guinea impatiens do better in full sunlight or light shade.

Lobelias For those with shadier properties who are looking to add color to brighten things up, lobelias are a great choice. These annuals do very well in shade. They are available in a beautiful blue as well as lavender and white. “These are great for shady spots and they give great color,” says Dworkin. He also advises that gardeners be careful to provide lobelias with the right among of water. According to Dworkin, these plants should be allowed to approach dryness, emphasizing the continued on page 10

Preparing Pools For Summer Fun long with milder weather, spring brings a list of many chores that homeowners must attend to. As the weather warms up, thoughts may turn to lawn cleanups and planting flowers. There are also many pleasant springtime activities to enjoy such as baseball and walking through a park as the buds emerge on the trees. Taking a refreshing dip into one’s backyard pool might have to wait until the weather gets a bit warmer. And with so many other activities to keep them busy, homeowners may neglect to do maintenance on their pools and wait for the warm summer months, when pools are most often enjoyed. However, spring is actually the best time to prepare a pool for summer. By opening their pool after the first extended warm spell, homeowners will save time, money and energy. Just like the buds on the trees that begin to grow after the first warm days of spring, so does the plant life inside of pools. There’s no getting around it. By opening their pools early, homeowners can eliminate the expense of additional chemicals, the time it takes to vacuum the pool over and over to clean it, as well as the extra work it will take to get the pool in shape. Experts at Island Recreation agree that early opening is the only way to go, but many hold off for all the wrong reasons. Myth: Running the filter in spring is an added expense. Fact: Because of the cooler temperatures, the filter only needs to be run for a short period of time each day, which will save money on electricity. Myth: Once the cover is off, algae will grow. Fact; Algae begin to grow once the winterizing chemicals dissipate. This happens after the first week of spring temperatures. Myth: Keeping the pool running in spring, when it is not in use, will waste chemicals. Fact: The cooler water temperatures in spring actually demand fewer chemicals, far less than would be used to clear up a green or cloudy pool by waiting to open it. In addition, opening the pool early is easier since a big cleanup will not have to be done. And one of the best rea-

A

By doing maintenance now, homeowners will be ready for all of the fun family activities that are enjoyed during warmer weather.

sons to open a pool in spring is getting to enjoy it sooner. After the mild weather that Long Island experienced this year, along with spring temperatures that have already reached 80 degrees, it is not hard to fathom that very warm days, which are ideal for enjoying all of the benefits that a pool offers, will soon be here. When a pool is opened, a mineral remover should be added to the water. This will remove minerals in the tap water that can cause discoloration and make it falsely appear that algae are present. A fresh test kit should always be used. A pool test kit is like milk, eggs and other perishable items in a refrigerator. It has an expiration date. As test kits get older, they become less accurate. Since homeowners are relying on the kit for adding pool chemicals, it should be as accurate as possible to help save money by not adding unnecessary chemicals. All shocks are not created equal. Concentrated shocks such as Blue Seal Green Out are recommended by pool professionals at Island Recreational because they give a

lasting boost to the chlorine level instead of dissipating rapidly like many calcium-based shocks. The opening chemicals shouldn’t be added in all at once. Many need time to work on their own. Those using chemicals should follow the instructions and always run the filter between chemical treatments. Those who prefer the hands-free approach to pool maintenance can check out salt chlorine generators. They allow pool owners to actually make their own chlorine. These systems convert salt in the swimming pool water and change it into chlorine while automatically sanitizing the pool. This means no chlorine buckets to buy, none to haul to the pool and none to store in a shed. The salt chlorine generator of choice by the pool professionals of Island Recreation is the SWS brand. They have models for every size and shape pool and are recognized for their reliability and performance. continued on page 22

The Natural Look – An Expert Recommends Organic Lawn Care By Ronald Scaglia rscaglia@antonnews.com hen Bob Conaghan became associate director of Adelphi University’s Department of Facilities Management, he couldn’t believe his eyes. As he looked at the stockpile of fertilizer, he saw the warning labels on the packaging, including the skull and crossbones, indicating toxic material. He soon came to the scary realization that this poison would be put down on the fields where Adelphi students would be playing games and enjoying picnics. Conaghan immediately knew that a change was in order and he quickly switched Adelphi over to an organic lawn and gardening program. “It was a no brainer,” says Conaghan of his decision to switch to organic lawn care at Adelphi. When he made the switch, Conaghan was warned that the grounds would not look as nice and that he was putting his new job in jeopardy. However, a dozen years later, Conaghan is still here and the grounds of the university look magnificent. And now he’s advising Long Island homeowners to do the same with their lawns and gardens. “I would recommend for everyone to go organic,” he says emphatically. Conaghan gives two primary reasons for his preference of organic materials. The first of these is safety. He simply does not like putting poison down on areas where children, pets and even adults spend time. “Is that something [chemicals] you’re going to put down where your children are going to play?” Conaghan asks. “Not me. I feel it was common practice on Long Island, way back when. It still is one

W

Adelphi’s associate director of facilities says that using organic products results in healthier plants.

to a good extent. A lot of schools still use that stuff. [Also], homeowners with their pets out in the yard.” He adds that some homeowners become careless when applying these chemicals and pesticides. For example, he says that many homeowners apply grub killers to lawns without measuring the size of the grass or determining the proper amount. Instead, they recklessly apply all the contents of the pesticide to their lawns in disproportionate amounts. “And they’re wondering why there’s 20 or 30 dead birds in the neighborhood a week later,” he comments. “Most have a tendency thinking more is better. They

buy a bag with 5,000 or 10,000 square feet coverage and they’ll put the whole thing down on their lawn.” Conaghan also recommends organic products in lawn and garden care because he simply feels that organic materials are better for lawns and plants in keeping them healthy. He says there has been a big improvement in the horticulture at Adelphi since the switch was made. “Much better, it’s night and day,” he says. Conaghan explains that plants need far more vitamins and minerals than most people think. While fertilizer bags show the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium

content of the fertilizer, Conaghan asserts that other nutrients are essential. In fact, he says that there are about three dozen vitamins and minerals that grass and plants need to be healthy. He further elaborates that chemical fertilizers and other such products will kill many of the microorganisms that live in the soil. So, while a lawn that is plastered with chemicals may temporarily have the effect of looking nice and green, underneath, Conaghan says, it is really unhealthy. “These microorganisms, 99 percent are beneficial in the soil,” Conaghan states. “They come and help the plants stay healthy and survive. When you’re putting down the chemical fertilizers in gardens or in your lawns, you’re wiping out all these natural organisms.” By contrast, he says that organic fertilizers help to keep microorganisms alive in the soil. He further elaborates that when the populations of these microorganisms are at their proper levels, the worms and other organisms will selfaerate the soil so the homeowner may not have to do so. Additionally, he says that will help the soil better retain water and oxygen, thus resulting in better plants and lawns. “When you put down the organic fertilizer, it’s going to get right to the roots and you’ll be feeding your soil and your grass with what it really needs, not these chemicals,” Conaghan advises. However, before rushing out to the nearest nursery, Conaghan does caution about some of the differences between organic and chemical gardening. One of these is the effort that is required. He says continued on page 18

A Guide To Summer Plants continued from page 3

Dahlias

word “approach.” However, he also says that adding too much water can be just as detrimental as allowing the soil to go bone dry. “You don’t want to keep watering and rot it out,” he says. He further states that the amount of water depends on the weather. If the summer is cool and damp, lobelias may only need to be watered once per week. If it’s hot and dry, much more watering will be required.

If you want a plant that has big flowers, then dahlias might be your plant of choice. These come in three sizes, a border size which is low to the ground, a medium size and a dinner-plate size which can get very tall and quite big. Dahlias come in white, red and purple and will bloom up until the first frost. As with geraniums, Dworkin recommends removing the old flowers. An interesting feature of dahlias is they are tuberous, like potatoes, so a skilled gardener can save the tuber as winter approaches and reproduce the dahlias the following spring. To do this, Dworkin says the tuber must be dug up after the first frost and stored in a cool dry place that is, ideally, between 40 and 46 degrees. A garage or a shed might be a good spot. In addition, Dworkin recommends keeping the tuber in dry peat moss and cutting off any parts that show signs of rot. Dahlias do best in sunlight. With all of these plants, Dworkin says that the key factor is proper watering. He says that most plants suffer because gardeners recklessly water them too much. “Most people kill plants by constantly pouring water,” says Dworkin. He says this is especially true of potted plants, as these plants are in an artificial environment. Those plants in containers should have drainage holes, says Dworkin. Conversely, not enough water can be just as harmful and gardeners should not allow soil to get completely dry. Instead, gardeners should monitor the soil to determine if water is indeed needed. “If the soil is wet, you don’t want to keep watering it,” advises Dworkin. “You’ve got to water according to the needs of the plant and the weather.” Dworkin also recommends using a brand name fertilizer, which he says he applies to his plants twice a month.

Petunias

Dahlias have big flowers and come in varied sizes, including one that is quite large and tall.

Another very popular and traditional summer plant are petunias. These are quite popular as ground cover, but also make a nice display if potted in a container or a window box. These annuals will last until the first frost, according to Dworkin and thrive in sunlight. They come in a wide assortment of colors. “White, yellow, purples, orange, blue and everything in between,” says Dworkin of colors that petunias are available in. He also adds that many gardeners with sunny locations will alternate between red, white and blue petunias to give a patriotic look. This is especially timely during the late spring and early summer months when a trio of American holidays – Memorial Day, Flag Day and Independence Day – are celebrated.

Calibrachoa

New Guinea impatiens, which are seen here, are also quite popular with gardeners.

Another choice for adding to a brilliant landscape are calibrachoa. These plants look terrific when cascaded as they have a nice effect when hanging down. They have a very small leaf that Dworkin describes as dainty. Calibrachoa are available in white and purple and will do best in filtered sun, as direct sunlight will dry them out, yet they will not do well in complete shade either. Dworkin also recommends this plant because of the nice fragrance it has.

Geraniums

A combination of red, white and blue flowers will create a festive look for Memorial Day or the Fourth of July.

“One of America’s most popular house plants,” is how Dworkin describes geraniums. These plants thrive in direct sunlight, can be enjoyed through the autumn, and come in many different shades. These are used mostly in pots, according to Dworkin. Gardeners should be careful to not overly water these plants, which Dworkin describes as succulent. Instead, he recommends that the soil be allowed to dry slightly in between waterings. He also advises that gardeners break off old flowers so that the energy goes into new buds.

These impatiens will do quite well in semi-sunny to shady locations and are quite popular.

Adirondack chairs and sets can add to the look of a backyard and also create a comfortable setting for friends and families to gather.

Patio Furniture; Elegant, Enjoyable And Functional ne of the most enjoyable pleasures of warm weather is the chance to spend time with family and friends in the fresh air and open space of a backyard. Accordingly, many are dusting off their barbecues and bringing out their patio furniture. As they do so, some may realize they need a new patio set or may want something to freshen up their patios and accent the furniture already there. As outdoor areas become extensions of indoor living spaces, there are so many options to choose from. The patio experts at Sundown Patio can help homeowners find solutions to all of their patio needs and create a patio setup that best reflects their style as well as the needs of their families. Below is a simple breakdown of different styles and what to look for this season.

O

Cast Aluminum Create a traditional outdoor dining set, with cast table and chairs. Add a deep seating collection with a sofa or loveseat, club chair and coffee table to create a carefree outdoor living space.

Aluminum Sling Sets If affordable, comfortable, and practically maintenance-free furniture is desired, try extruded aluminum furniture. Powder coated aluminum frames, weather resistant sling chairs and chaises, and solid or tempered glass top tables will help homeowners experience carefree outdoor living.

Outdoor Wicker Outdoor vinyl wicker also is a good choice for maintenance-free furniture. It can be handcrafted to capture the look of natural wicker in both traditional and contemporary choices. Sofas, settees, loveseats, club chairs, dining sets, and sectional sets, all offered with cushions, create elegant outdoor seating.

Teak Timeless, weather resistant, and practically maintenance free, teak wood is the ideal choice for those who live near the

water or in harsh conditions as it will stand the test of time. Sundown Patio offers complete dining sets as well as benches, bar sets, chaises and seating groups.

Envirowood-Polymer Envirowood is a high quality marine grade polymer that looks like wood and is built to last. Sundown Patio’s selection includes Adirondack chairs, dining tables and chairs, chaises, outdoor bars and more, which will withstand outdoor elements and waterfront conditions.

Traditional, Market and Cantilever Umbrellas Sundown has an umbrella option for every setting and occasion. Everything from a traditional folding umbrella to a Cantilever umbrella, Sundown Patio has it all in a variety of colors and opening mechanisms.

Replacement Cushions These can be made to order. Sundown also has a large stock to choose from.

Hammocks Relaxing between the trees is very pleasant. Homeowners can choose from rope hammocks or those padded with a pillow or on a hammock stand.

Beach Chairs These are available in a variety of style and color options, all designed to let you relax with your favorite book. Sundown Patio’s collection of outdoor furniture is extensive and represents most major brands: Brown Jordan, Hanamint, Lloyd Flanders, Tropitone, Castelle, Gensun, Agio, Kingsley Bate, Basta Sole, Gloster, Telescope, Hatteras, Nellie Olson, Pride, Beka, Scan Com, Seaside Casual and more. Sundown Patio will help you create the perfect outdoor living space for you and your family. For further information, call 631-7378600 or go online at www.sundownpatio. com. The Power And Fun Of Gardening P

Frank Salerno says it is quite enjoyable for gardeners to produce their own vegetables such as these awesome tomatoes which this young lady is proudly displaying.

By Frank Salerno icture this: You’re in the throes of winter, at the end of February to be exact. You look out your window at the howling wind, the bare trees, and the frozen ground. Traces of snow and ice still remain from the last snowfall. The sun breaks through intermittently, but your mood is gray. Although officially the winter is only about 7 weeks old, it feels like it’s been going on forever. Your mind drifts back toward summer with its blue skies, green lawns, foliage and flowers. How you miss those bright, warm days. They seem so far away. But wait! You step over to the other side of the house where your home-built, plastic/polyethylene-covered window box is hanging, soaking in light, and where little green things are sprouting. These are the seeds you planted just a few weeks ago and they are now growing—lettuce seeds, curly endives, onions, leeks. You examine them closely, trying to gauge how much they’ve grown since yesterday. Oh, it must be at least a quarter of an inch! Suddenly, your mood is lifted. The heat and light that fill the inside of the box seem to radiate throughout the entire room and beyond. You look out the window again, at the hard, frozen ground, and this time in place of the lifeless earth you saw a moment ago, you see in your mind’s eye the lush garden it was just a few months before and will start to be again a few more weeks from now. You see big, fresh salads every night for dinner. You see luscious red tomatoes, tender green beans, cucumbers, peppers, and all that other good stuff that comes out of the ground. Not so oddly, these delicate seedlings inside the window box, with their promise of things to come in the weeks and

months ahead, make the winter feel a little less bitter and a little more tolerable, and they tell you that spring is right around the corner. Life feels good again. This is the power that gardening has. It can lift your spirits just like that! Out of bare soil come little green things that become big green things that finally become a backyard full of succulent vegetables. Nationwide, backyard gardens have seen a steady surge in growth over the last several years. They have become as popular as the so-called “Victory Gardens” of World War II, only this time for different reasons. Back in the war years it was the patriotic thing to do – grow a garden. The U.S. was then unquestionably the breadbasket of the world, and the crops that came out of our enormous agricultural system were needed not only to feed us at home and our servicemen here and abroad, but also our allies, whose countries and farmlands were being crippled by the war. To take some of the strain off that system, citizens here were encouraged to establish backyard gardens where they could grow some of their own food. In neighborhood after neighborhood, victory gardens sprouted. Today, there’s a new dynamic at work. Because of increased consumer awareness, greater numbers of people are conscious about the things they eat and the chemicals used to grow them, so many of them are turning more and more to starting their own gardens. For the summer months at least, the thinking goes, they can eat their own homegrown freshly picked, toxin-free vegetables. In the meantime, they are discovering what great fun it is to spend a couple of hours on a quiet summer day tending to their gardens. Still, the overwhelming majority of them are missing a great deal of that fun, and cer-

tainly a lot of the satisfaction, that comes from one overlooked aspect of gardening. In May and June they drive over to the garden centers where they fill their carts with trays of seedlings, when they could very well be growing their own in the middle of winter, in preparation for spring, and thus enjoy the full experience of gardening all the way through from the very beginning to the end – starting one’s own seeds to picking one’s own fruit. And while all this is going on, they could find that not only could they save a lot of money, but they could also get a deeper understanding of how a garden grows, which can only improve their results. It’s not yet too late, but growing one’s own seedlings requires a lot of planning and tooling up. If one is not ready to start this year, one can think about next year. Sadly, that will come in the blink of an eye so it’s never really too late. Frank Salerno is the author of From Seed to Salad: A Step-By-Step Manual for Backyard Gardening.

ew lighting choices and light bulb packaging are showing up on store shelves due to energy efficiency standards launched nationwide at the beginning of January. This means shopping for light bulbs is different than it’s been in the past. The new standards require that light bulbs be 25 percent more efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs. The first changes, which began in January, are to 100-watt bulbs, followed by 75-, 60- and 40-watt bulbs over the next two years. In addition, new packaging for light bulbs will make it easier to compare bulbs that use different technologies, such as incandescent bulbs, Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs), halogens and Light Emitting Diodes (LED). The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) offers these tips when shopping for light bulbs as standards and packaging change: • Understand your choices: The new light bulb standards will result in more lighting options than ever before. Consumers can choose among energy-efficient incandescent bulbs, CFLs, halogens and LED technology – all of which will be at least 25 percent more energy efficient than the 125year-old Edison light bulb, one of the most inefficient products in most homes. • Get to know your lumens: The new light bulb packaging includes a new standardization measure – lumens. This measures how much light a bulb produces rather than how much energy it uses, which is measured in watts. Lumens make it easier to buy the amount of light you need. A bulb with more lumens produces bright light, regardless of the type of bulb. Less lumens means dimmer light. With this new standardization, comparisonshopping by lumens will help consumers compare “apples to apples” across incandescent bulbs, CFLs, halogens and LEDs. • Read the Lighting Facts Label to compare bulbs: In addition to lumen and watt

information, the new lighting includes estimated yearly energy cost, life expectancy of the bulb and light appearance on a scale of warm (more yellow) to cool (more blue). With more lighting technologies to choose from, this information will make it easier to determine the right bulb for the job. • Try something new and save money: The new lighting standards will help consumers use less energy and spend less money on energy bills for the same amount of light. A typical household could potentially save $100 to $150 per year on electric bills by using a combination of the more energy-efficient bulbs.
