PRIDE IN PORT - 2013

Edna Turner Grand Marshal Through the Twin Pines Community Food Cooperative, Edna has helped keep Port Washington residents well nourished with healthy food and has been a champion for the basic food, clothing and shelter needs of all in the community, supporters say. She is a strong advocate for emotional and spiritual needs as well, having worked with community organizations ranging from churches and synagogues to day care and senior citizen centers and job placement services. Edna has raised her five children here, lived on one of the local houseboats, and says she is now adjusted to apartment living at The Landmark on Main Street. Her favorite places in Port Washington are the Town Dock, Our Lady of Fatima Church, and, of course, Twin Pines, she says. The parade starts at the corner of Main Street and Belleview Avenue. The route goes up Main Street, takes a right on Port Washington Boulevard, and then heads towards Schreiber High School on Campus Drive.

The 25th Annual Pride in Port Parade will kick off at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 28, led by Grand Marshal Edna Turner of the Twin Pines of Port Washington Community Food Cooperative & Charitable Thrift Shop. Edna, a long-time community supporter and activist, moved to Port Washington from Flushing in the mid-1970’s. As a student at Queens College, an interest in the cooperative food movement was sparked by one of her professors, and she became involved with the national Consumer’s Cooperative Alliance. Originally brought to Port Washington as an Alliance advisor to help keep a struggling food co-op running, she was asked to be Port Washington’s co-op director. More than 40 years later, she’s still in charge. Under Edna’s leadership, Twin Pines has evolved and adapted to societal changes and population shifts. In addition to food, it now carries housewares, bedding, and other non-food items. A gift shop with many new items, and some vintage treasures, will open in October. Originally staffed by co-op members, Edna is now often assisted by individuals completing community service requirements.

PRIDE IN PORT - 2013

Schreiber Athletics Hall Of Fame Inductees For 2013 The 2013 inductees for the Schreiber High School Athletics Hall of Fame are Thomas Eletto, Class of 1990; Michael Levine, Class of 1975; and Lynn Porter Schnepper, Class of 1960. Their accomplishments are below:

Thomas Eletto, Class of 1990 Tom was an outstanding threesport athlete in football, wrestling and baseball. Tom was a leader in words and in action on the field. He was captain of the football team for three years and a captain of the wrestling team. Tom was known for being a tenacious competitor who worked hard to earn his playing time and the accolades soon followed. During the time he played at Schreiber the teams were on the rise. His presence and athletic abilities were instrumental in the success of these programs. His captaincies are a testament to the respect he gained from his teammates and coaches. His exceptional play on the high school football field led him to play collegiately at the University

of Connecticut where he earned the “Strongest Freshmen” strength award and being named as the top recruit for their program. Tom transferred to C.W. Post and completed a stellar career as he was named Player of the Week, All Conference and was captain of the team. Tom continues his sports endeavors as a tri-athlete and coaches junior baseball. Tom is married to wife, Heather, and has three children – Thomas, Christian and Ava. Congratulations to Tom on his induction into the Hall of Fame.

Michael Levine, Class of 1975 Michael was an outstanding tennis player at Schreiber High School. He was a three-year standout varsity singles player. He was captain of the team and was undefeated in his senior year. Michael was known as an intense competitor and a student of the game and his mental toughness was a strength not seen by many on the courts. His passion was secondto-none, and with his array of strokes

and work ethic, he was among the best players on Long Island. Michael was highly recruited out of Schreiber by Hobart, the Air Force Academy and Emory University. He decided on Hobart because he fell in love with the campus and the coach felt he could contribute as a freshman. The majority of his collegiate experience was playing third singles. As a senior he was named captain and MVP of the team. After college, Michael went to Mercer University Law School and has had great success in the law field. He has been named one of the top lawyers in NY State every year since 2008. It was in that year he was elected mayor of Old Field, NY. He has been re-elected twice and is serving a third term as village mayor in the town of Brookville. He is President-elect of the NYS Trial Lawyers Association, serves on the Board of Directors of Suffolk United Cerebral Palsy and is a partner of a law firm. Michael is married since 1989 to his wife, Pamela. They have two children, Randy, who is a junior at Colgate University, and Carly, who is a nationally- ranked fencer at Ward Melville. Congratulations to Michael on his induction into the Hall of Fame.

Lynn Porter Schnepper, Class of 1960

516-767-2121

Lynn was a multi-talented athlete and sports participant in many sports – field hockey, basketball, cheerleading, tumbling, volleyball and Color War. Looking back on that time before Title IX, which provided more opportunities for females, Lynn took full advantage of the opportunities that Schreiber offered to females at the time. She was a captain of cheerleading and was a leader on the varsity basketball and volleyball teams. She was passionate and enthusiastic about all she did and was known to be a great athlete and a wonderful teammate. In 1960 she was named the school’s Outstanding Girl Athlete. Lynn has fond memories of Color War as a member of the White Team. Lynn’s love of sports continued as a physical education major at Denison University in Ohio. She played field hockey and was a member of the swim team. After college, she taught high school physical education at Broom Town High School in Chicago Heights.

She got involved in the Northfield Community Nursery School Board and as President of the School Board, in Sunset Ridge, for 10 years. Lynn got married in 1964 and had four children with her first husband, Joe Bodman. She is currently married to Howard Schnepper, who has four children as well. The extended families include 15 grandchildren. Lynn and Howard split their time between Chicago and Las Vegas and retirement has been very good to them. We congratulate Lynn on her induction into the Hall of Fame.

Anthony Saccone, Class of 1995 Anthony was a three-sport athlete. He was varsity football, basketball and lacrosse player. Anthony was a running back and outside linebacker for the football team that was one game shy of making the playoffs. His solid season earned him the “Unsung Hero” recognition by the Nassau County Football Coaches Association. It was in lacrosse that Anthony gained most of his notoriety. In his junior year, Anthony was named All League before becoming an All County player his senior year and also being named Honorable Mention All American. He played midfield on the 1995 county championship lacrosse team that defeated Farmingdale. He remembers that Port was down by three at halftime and coming back to defeat the Dalers was one of his biggest thrills as an athlete. He was named MVP in the championship game. Anthony started his collegiate lacrosse career playing at Nassau Community College where he made the All-Region Team as a sophomore. He transferred to have a great career at Adelphi where he was named All American and played in the 1999 National Championship game. He had the privilege of playing for the professional New York Saints lacrosse team. Anthony is teaching physical education in the Deer Park School District where he coaches girls varsity lacrosse. Anthony is married to the former Jill Kennedy and they have a son, Caden Anthony, born in 2011. Though he resides in Carle Place, his mother and five sisters, Sandra, Barbara, Nicole, Annemarie and Christina, still reside in Port. He will always consider Port Washington his home. Congratulations to Anthony on his induction into the Hall of Fame.

PRIDE IN PORT - 2013

Weber Student Wins Pride In Port Contest Adam Jackman, a 7th grader at Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School, submitted the winning design for this year’s Pride in Port tee shirt. Adam has lived his entire life in Port Washington, and, when asked about what he enjoys most about it, he said, “I love everything about Port Washington; it’s the perfect town,” noting the waterfront and beautiful sunsets. But when asked where he’d like to have his picture taken, there was no hesitation when he answered, “Lions Field”. Adam is a member of this year’s Port Washington Legends 11 and under team, and he proudly stated that the team was the first “11 and under” team from Port Washington to win a playoff game in Cooperstown. He also noted that the team won their sectionals and went to the state competition. Adam selected Carlo’s Pizza as his favorite place to eat in Port. In school, his favorite subjects are social studies and art. Adam’s “Pride in Port” showed in the wonderful tee shirt design he created. Pride in Port Tee Shirts are available for $10. They are being sold at Arena Sports, and are also expected to be available on September 28 at the Pride in Port Family Fun activities on Campus Drive.

September 28, a day of celebrating our beautiful community, culminates with the 25th Pride in Port Community Dinner/Dance. Cocktails and appetizers start at 7PM and the Dinner will be at 8PM, in the Polish Hall at 5 Pulaski Place. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. Dinner chairperson Marie Marcellino has put together a committee of enthusiastic, young women whose refreshing new ideas will make this the best Pride in Port dinner ever! The theme for the dinner is a nautical one and guests are invited to dress in nautical attire if they wish. “Davy Jones Locker” will be the location for the raffle prizes as well as a “quiet room” for anyone who wants to take a break from the festivities. Watch out for a band of Pirates who will happily take your money — for the raffle! Members of the CSEA will be running the raffle to raise money for scholarships for high school seniors. The prizes are baskets filled with wonderful gifts, gift cards and cheer!

The food for the dinner has been coordinated by Hal Linden of Ayhan’s Mediterranean Marketplace. Many of the dishes will be provided by the Mediterranean Marketplace, and other restaurants in town will be donating their specialties for appetizers, main courses and desserts. Guests will really be treated to “A Taste of Port Washington.” The Committee is excited to have Power Glide provide live musical entertainment. Most of the very talented members of the band are also local school custodians. Power Glide has performed at the dinner in past years and they really know how to get a crowd grooving and dancing. Warren Schein, co-president of the Chamber of Commerce, will be the evening’s emcee. The Committee is fortunate to have this talented actor, singer and comedian hosting the evening’s entertainment. Plan to join your friends and make some new ones at the Pride in Port Dinner/Dance on Saturday, September 28!
