Paddle Battle On The Peconic BY ANTON NEWS STAFF

editorial@antonnews.com

The second annual Paddle Battle LI event is set to hit the Peconic River in Riverhead, on Saturday, July 26. This popular event raises money for two East End not-for profit organizations, the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation and the East End Tourism Alliance. Racers can participate in either the recreational class, competitive class or elite class, encompassing all skill levels, with age categories from 13 to 60+. “There are very few paddle races on Long Island, we are excited to bring it back again this year,” said Bryan DeLuca, the event organizer. The day’s family-friendly events include a five-mile competitive race, a 2.5-mile amateur race, and a 12-mile elite class race. There will also be a pair of two-person canoe and kayaks races. First place medals will be offered to winners in each category, for each class and distance. Focus SUP Boards have donated a Stand Up Paddle Board and Peconic Paddlers have donated a 9’ Kayak, both of which will be raffled off. Participants and spectators will have a chance to win by purchasing tickets for $10 each.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. on the Peconic waterfront — check Website for various race times. Entry fees are $50/pp in advance, or $65 on race day. Rental canoes and kayaks are available

Attracting Birds And Butterflies To The Garden BY KAREN MUSGRAVE

editorial@antonnews.com

117594

Believe it or not, attracting birds and butterflies to the garden requires many of the same things we as humans look for. Many of us chose where we live based on location. Are we close to school? Work? Family? Shopping? Well, insects and birds are thinking the exact same way. They want to be close to everything they need. To attract more butterflies and birds you need to create an environment that nurtures and supports their need for food, water and shelter. For Butterflies Food: Plant your garden with nectar rich flowers as well as leafy plants for when butterflies are in their caterpillar state. Water: Butterflies like to drink water from shallow puddles, so an area of damp sand or mud is best. Location: Choose an area with full sun and remember to place the garden where you will be able to view and enjoy it. Plants to attract butterflies: Annuals: Cosmos, heliotrope, hollyhock, lantana, marigold, petunia, sunflowers, snapdragon and zinnias. Trees and Shrubs: Abelia, azalea, butterfly bush, clethra, honey suckle, lilac, rhododendron. For butterflies during the caterpillar stage: Butterfly weed, mallow, milkweed, sunflower and yarrow.

March over to Old Westbury Gardens this summer. Enjoy some of our many events including Midsummer Night, Picnic Pops and Beech Tree Concerts, classes in Yoga and Tai Chi, the Long Island Scottish Festival, and many more. Or just relax, and take the time to smell the roses. 71 Old Westbury Road, Old Westbury, NY 11568 516-333-0048 www.oldwestburygardens.org

For Birds Food: To attract birds to your garden and surrounding areas, it is important to have a food source available all year long. Use plants that provide fruits and

berries and supplement with a bird feeder and bagged bird food when necessary. Water: Natural ponds and birdbaths are great water sources for birds. Be sure the water source is out in the open or elevated to minimize problems with predators. Location: Areas planted with trees and shrubs of different heights and widths provide birds with many areas for perching, nesting and shelter. The more diverse the plant material, the more birds you will attract. It’s also a good idea to keep leaf litter, grass clippings and discarded brush somewhere in the yard. These items are an excellent source of insects for food, nesting material and shelter. Plants to attract birds: Perennials: Black eyed Susan, coreopsis, bee balm, yarrow, cosmos and sunflower. Trees and Shrubs: Red maple, river birch, eastern redbud, dogwood, pines, cedars and blueberry bush. Attracting wildlife to your garden is a gift — not just for the birds and butterflies but for you and your family. Nature provides us with an amazing opportunity to teach our children about colors, seasons, food and so much more. Take some time to think about how you can create an environment that attracts wildlife. Providing birds and butterflies with everything they need, from the time they lay their eggs to maturity, will greatly increase your chances of attracting wildlife to your yard for many years to come. — Karen Musgrave, CNLP is a marketing and education specialist at Hicks Nurseries.

Experiencing The Natural Beauty Of Long Island BY LYN DOBRIN

editorial@antonnews.com

Much of our island has been tamed by houses and malls but, thanks to the Nature Conservancy, there are many out-of-the-way natural places to enjoy our floral and fauna. The Nature Conservancy, perhaps the largest environmental organization in the U.S., conserves lands and waters with the stated goal of “leaving a sustainable world for future generations.” Here on Long Island are many parcels of land that were donated to the Nature Conservancy by people who didn’t want to see the property developed. Derek Rogers, the preserve manager for the Nature Conservancy, says 21 of the 60 preserves across Long Island are open for visitors from dawn to dusk. The preserves are grouped into five categories: Atlantic Ocean Beaches and Bays, Central Pine Barrens, Long Island Sound, Montauk and Peconic Estuary. Information can be found on their Website: nature.org/ longisland (click on Place We Protect).

BEAUTY from page 6C Here are a few for you to consider. Pine Neck Sanctuary, East Quogue This former estate is a wonderful place for a short hike along the coast, bird watching and beachcombing. Pine Neck is one of the few places where the Pine Barrens extends to the South Shore. The trail starts in a forested pine and oak area, rolling into tidal salt marsh and ends on Shinnecock Bay. The marsh is a productive breeding ground for salt marsh sparrow, marsh wren and clapper rail. There’s a disputed belief that the expression “thin as a rail” comes from the secretive clapper rail. Calverton Pond Commercial cranberry bogs were in operation here for the first half of the 20th century, but now 350 acre Calverton Pond is host to rare plants, amphibians, fish and insects in this, one of the rarest and most fragile wetland ecosystems in North America. The tiger salamander and banded sunfish as well as sundews, whose leaves are covered with sticky hairs that capture insects, make their home here. Calverton Pond is a coastal plain pond fed through groundwater. You can hike through the ancient Pine Barrens forest and near the shore but visitors are asked to avoid walking on the shore because the plants there are delicate. David Weld Sanctuary, Nissequogue Glaciers carved out this area during the Ice Age. The trail takes you through meadow dotted with red cedars, a hardwood forest, and to a 60-foot deep depression formed by a glacial ice melt. Also a result of the glaciers is enormous boulders through the woods and along the shore. The trail ends in a high bluff and there is a path to follow down to the beach. Bank swallow excavate holes in the side of the bluff and nest at the end of their tunnels. Rogers says this is a great place to watch the sun set.

Above: An osprey at the Pine Neck Sanctuary (Photo by Derek Rogers) At right: Sandy Pond at Calverton in the morning St. John’s Pond Preserve, Cold Spring Harbor This is the place to look for the river otter, a very rare creature on Long Island. Often confused with muskrats, the river otter is larger — about three to four feet long — with a flat tail. Some of the oldest forest on Long Island is here; you’ll see giant tulip trees and oaks. The preserve is right behind the Fish Hatchery and a key to the gate can be picked up at the booth. Shadmoor, Montauk If you’re a bird watcher or love wildflowers, Shadmoor is for you. There are three miles of trails through the 99-acre preserve and stairways you can take down to the beach. This is one of the few remaining habitats for a number of endangered wildflowers, including sandplain gerardia, the rarest plant in New York State. You may picnic here.

Kids, teens, adults, families and groups will soon be happily zipping through the trees in a new attraction located in Wheatley Heights when The Adventure Park at Long Island opens on June 21. The Adventure Park at Long Island will be the first aerial forest ropes park on the island and is sure to appeal to outdoor fun-seekers age seven and older as the new “cool place” this summer. Located on five wooded acres within the Henry Kaufman Campgrounds at 75 Colonial Springs Rd., The Adventure Park at Long Island represents a new concept of self-guided ropes park that includes both zip lines-those cables that one rides across from tree to treeas well as a series of different “challenge bridges” between tree platforms. The park’s zip lines and bridges are connected in a series of different “treetop trails.” Customers can choose from eight of these different color-coded trails ranging from introductory through advanced so there will be suitable challenges for both beginners as well as more experienced climbers. Customers, known as “climbers,” wear safety harnesses, doubly secured to cables throughout their time in the trees. The harnesses employ an “always locked on” climbing system of interlocking carabineers (coupling links). Climbers receive a thorough orientation session before going on the trails, which are designed for self-discovery, making lessons otherwise unnecessary. Park monitors are always available for questions or assistance. Eco-friendly, outdoor fun for kids, teens, adults, groups The Adventure Park is an eco-friendly attraction that encourages appreciation of nature and enjoyment of healthy play in the outdoors. Tree-friendly

construction techniques are used employing cables and wedges to secure the platforms, rather than bolts or nails, helping the trees to remain healthy. Professional arborists maintain the trees and overall forest property along with The Adventure Park’s staff. Aside from a small amount of electricity for the thousands of tiny twinkling, low voltage LED lights strung above the crossings for nighttime climbing, the trails use no other electricity, motors or fuel for the activities, just gravity and each climber’s own effort. The Adventure Park concept originated in Europe about 20 years ago. Hugely popular, there are now around 2,000 such parks throughout Europe. However, in the United States, it is still a relatively new thing and there are currently only around 60 nationally. Outdoor Ventures (the company which built and operates The Adventure Park) pioneered the adventure park pastime in the United States beginning in 2008. Today the company is now a leading designer, builder and operator of them. It has built over 15 such parks across the nation. The Adventure Park at Long Island will be the seventh park it has both built and also operates. Operating hours The Adventure Park will be open during the summer seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Beginning Sept. 3, it will go to its fall and spring schedule of weekends and holidays. (Though groups of 10 or more can reserve time to climb any day of the week during spring, summer and fall.) The park will be closed during the winter. For updates and the latest news visit The Adventure Park’s website: www.LongIslandTrees.org. For group reservations and other information email: Info@ LongIslandAdventurePark.org or call 631-983-3844.
