Westbury: Long Island’s New Home For The Arts By Betsy Abraham

Long Island’s next big venue is finding its home in an unlikely place. With a population of just above 15,000, Westbury is not known for gold coast mansions, sandy beaches or fine dining establishments. However, the village’s recent push for downtown revitalization on Post Avenue has many thinking that the “community for all seasons” will soon become a well-recognized Long Island destination for the arts. In recent years, Westbury has put a huge emphasis on the arts. The recently formed Greater Westbury Council for the Arts has ushered in events such as a short film showcase and street mosaic, which was one of the signature events of the Long Island Arts Alliance’s ArtsAlive Festival. Signs of revitalization have become more and more prominent as new businesses fill vacant storefronts and apartment buildings become more common place. Undoubtedly the most noticeable change in downtown Westbury is the transformation of the Westbury Movie Theater. The beautiful, historic ANTON 4.25x5.5 building has been a landmark on
Post Avenue since the 1920s, and recently reopened its doors as a multipurpose entertainment venue which hosts everything from concerts, to plays, to art shows.
It’s hard to imagine Post Avenue without the Westbury Movie Theater. The theater opened its doors for the first time on November 10, 1927 as people gathered to watch the silent film “Hula” starring Clara Bow while the University of Maryland Collegian Band played onstage. The theater flourished as a single screen house and was twinned in the late 1970s. Patronage soon decreased and the theater closed its doors in 2001, becoming an eyesore on Post Avenue on the verge of demolition. But eight years ago, Cyrus Hakakian, co-owner of Lowe Properties, saved the property, buying the location in hopes of restoring the movie house to its old glory while renovating it to accommodate contemporary entertainment. Today, Hakakian’s grand vision has come to fruition. When Hakakian and his team bought the building eight years ago, it was in shambles, but now the Tudor style venue has been completely remodeled. The entire building was gutted, save for the walls, brick columns and ceiling, and has been re-purposed to accommodate nationally and internationally renowned acts, concerts, dance companies and plays. The Space will not only be used for entertainment, but can be rented out for parties such as weddings, sweet sixteens and bah/ bar mitzvahs. “This is a house for every aspect for performing arts, any kind of special event can be staged here,” Executive Director Bruce Michael said. “We’re a multiple use house so people can
expect to see any number of things here they wouldn’t see at any other theater.” The venue’s LED marquee can be seen from blocks away and will boast upcoming performances. When people enter through the glass doors, they are greeted by a beautiful chandelier and box office where they can buy tickets, as well as a bar where they can socialize and buy drinks before a performance. Off to the side of the lobby is a lounge, where patrons can relax on couches and where a small stage houses cabaret style entertainment. Guests entering through the valet entrance on Winthrop Street can see another specially designed chandelier and mural featuring a scene from what backstage at the original theater may have looked like. The performing arts center can hold up to 1,500 people during a General Admission event with standing room, or 700 with seats. Most of the seats can be removed to add tables and Michael says there’s not a bad seat in the house. The main room features four bars, including one that is 30 feet long and made from the theater’s original floorboards. The Space also has state of the art lighting and sound. Eight stunning tiered chandeliers hang over the auditorium and LED lights along the wall can alter the atmosphere of the room with the single touch of a button.

The mission of the Westbury Memorial Public Library is to provide excellent, proactive services to fulfill the informational, educational and recreational needs of the community. Walk down the stairs of The M. Phipps Recreation Center on Post Avenue and it’s like walking into another world. The two large, red white and blue boxing rings in the center of the room command attention, and people wearing gloves in all corners of the room are hitting punching bags. No, this isn’t a scene from Rocky, it’s the Westbury Boxing Club. Westbury Boxing is a lot more than your average gym. According to owners Kevin Collins and Gerard Wilson, it’s a haven. Around 50 people walk through the gym’s doors each day and develop not only their muscles, but their character and values. “We run this gym to keep kids out of trouble,” Collins said. “There’s drugs and gangs, and then there’s the other side of it where they’re staying inside sitting on the couch with a bag of potato chips.” The gym is completely free of charge. Men and women of all ages can use body bags, gloves, and other equipment. Coaches also volunteer their time and expertise with boxers looking to spar and improve their skills. The gym has also trained several amateur boxers.
The gym is run entirely on donations which help pay for the cost of equipment, rent and insurance, which can all quickly add up. “A lot of people from Westbury donate, which I think is great because they’re part of the community and are investing in their community,” Collins said. “Without the people who support us, I don’t know where we’d be.” “Everybody comes down here for free,” Wilson says. “We all volunteer our time and nobody makes a penny. We’re taking money out of our own pockets to help pay the bills.” Westbury resident Richard Maddox started boxing two years ago at Westbury Boxing and says it’s one of the best on Long Island. “I came here, started working out and fell in love with the sport,” Maddox said. “The gym has nice equipment, nice coaches, and the free aspect is the biggest advantage.” Though it’s changed hands several times due to financial difficulties and legal problems, the gym has been a Westbury staple for over 20 years. “The village of Westbury has been great to us and we love it here,” Collins said. “And we’re looking to get better and better.”

Bunky Reid Basketball All-Stars This team teaches kids to be winners on the court and in the classroom By Chris Boyle

Even though Martin “Bunky” Reid passed away of colon cancer 20 years ago while only in his early 40’s, his memory still inspires young men today to achieve, both athletically and scholastically. Michael Jackson, a Hofstra University graduate and Supervisor of the Westbury Village Recreation Department for the past 17 years, recalls Reid as an important and unforgettable figure in Westbury, and one that had a profound impact on his career path. “He was my high school basketball coach. He pretty much meant everything to the Westbury community,” Jackson said. “He was a great role model. A former principal at Westbury high school, former basketball coach…for lack of a better word, he was an icon in Westbury.” The biggest lesson Jackson says he took away from Reid in their time together was the fact that athletics are
a powerful way to give young people the discipline they need to succeed, both in the classroom and in life. “Personally, recreation probably saved me from the streets,” he said. “Growing up, I was getting into trouble, and sports put me on the right path and told me that if I wanted to be on the school team I needed good grades, don’t drink, don’t smoke…all of that propelled me into being the person I am today, as a role model for the kids.” To honor the legacy of his former mentor, Jackson started the Bunky Reid All-Star Sports Club; a basketball league that has called countless young people of the community members over the years. “Bunky Reid All-Stars are primarily all kids from Westbury, but sometimes we have kids from other towns as well,” he said. “We have training camps for kids as young as four, as well as teen and adult teams. We have 51 teams, and we play in tournaments both in the city and
on Long Island. Sometimes we even go out of state just to show the kids something different.” Jonathan Dean, 13, has been in the Bunky Reid All-Stars for four years, and he’s taken the lessons afforded to him by Jackson to heart. “I love playing with Mr. Jackson. It’s a lot of fun,” he said. “He taught me how to score, how to take over in games, and how important it is to study hard when you’re off the court.” But in the end, Jackson said that it’s not just winning on the basketball court; the real goal is to prepare these young men to achieve their goals and dreams, and to teach them that nothing is beyond their grasp;
all-too-relevant values that a great man drilled into his own head 20 years ago. “We try our best to make sure the kids on the team are scholar-athletes,” he said. “I tell them that they’ve got to go to class and get good grades. That’s what I’m trying to instill in the kids of Westbury — that college is an obtainable goal, and that they all should work hard to achieve it.” “The reason I did this was because “Bunky” Reid was such an influence in my life,” Jackson added. “He was always there for me and provided a good example, so now I just keep his name alive and try to be a father-figure to my players in the way he was one to me.”

The Westbury Senior Center, located at 360 Post Avenue is open everyday and is a great place for seniors to get together to play games like Bingo and bridge, learn skills such as painting and crafts, engage in technology workshops, participate in wellness programs and socialize with others. The Carle Place Seniors Assosciation meets every Tuesday at the community center at Charles J. Fuschillo Park. Around 100 seniors gather every week to enjoy food, learn community news and catch up with friends. Both groups also regulary take trips and are a valuable part of the community.

Westbury Fire Department
The Westbury Public Safety Commission has had a major influence on making sure Westbury’s streets and children are safe. Led by Gloria Monito, the commission was recently recognized by Triple A, and given the gold award for making Westbury’s streets safe for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers.
The Westbury Fire Department Hose Company Number 1 recently celebrated their 100th anniversary. The hose company got its start in August 1913 with just 19 members. Today, the roster totals 50 members. Overall, the Westbury Fire Department is made up of 150 volutneers. Located at 355 Maple Avenue, the fire department has been instrumental in ensuring the safety of Westbury and local residents.

These places not only provide locals a place to fellowship, but also give back to the community. Many actively serve the needs of those around them-whether it be through food pantries, clothing drives, or hosting educational outreach events. These churches, temples, and mosques all add innumerable value to the areas and people they serve.
St. Brigid’s Church is an active part of the Westbury community. They hold several feasts and festivals a year, including St. Anthony’s Feast in July.
The Islamic Center of Long Island donated several boxes of food to the food pantry at St. Brigid’s Church’s and the Long Island Council of Churches. They are currently in the midst of an expansion project, which would add a gym, library and several meeting rooms.

Feel the Music At Rhythmology

Alfred Pena doesn’t believe in the two-left-feet excuse. “There is no such thing as twoleft-feet,” Pena says with a smile. “That can be fixed.” As founder of Rhythmology, a Westbury studio that teaches Latin dance, curly haired Pena is confident that anyone — regardless of age or previous experience — can learn to move. Located at 361 Union Avenue across from the Westbury train station, the studio is easy to pass by. The exterior is unspectacular: a brick building with a black banner reading “Rhythmology” hangs over the glass double door. But inside, a vibrant world awaits. Three spacious rooms with hardwood floors and art adorning the walls invites dancers new and old to let go of their inhibitions. Private and group lessons take place every day and Pena says that people travel over 45 minutes to come to the studio to learn from him and his dance partner, Aleksandra Kozlowska. They are the current United States
champions in bachata, a hip-popping dance form that originated in the Dominican Republic. Pena was studying math and economics at Cornell when he saw a flyer for Latin Dancing. He took a class, and fell in love. “A hobby become a very serious hobby and out of nowhere I decided I wanted to make it a career,” Pena says. “Once I came across dance, something awakened in me. (I loved) the idea of art, of creating, of being my own boss. I realized I didn’t have to go the traditional business direction and it’s been super exciting.” After graduating from college, he started a math tutoring company. But instead of just teaching math, he soon began offering dance lessons to his clients. “I thought it would be a winning combination,” Pena says. “To make a well-rounded student you need a balance of athleticism, arts and the sciences.” Many of his students had math phobias or simply hated math, but after teaching them both math and dance, he saw many become more social and confident.

Their parents became interested too, and Pena began teaching whole families. Soon, Pena gave up the math portion and focused on the dance portion of teaching. A short while later, Rhythmology was born. The studio focuses primarily on salsa, bachata, and flamenco. There are private lessons every day and group classes Sunday to Thursdays. Instructors emphasize partner dance and technique.

“Technique allows your body to get out of the soul’s way to express itself. If anybody felt they were awkward or had two left feet, with technique, they were able to get rid of that,” Pena says. For those who want to take their hobby to the next level, there is a teachers training program. Students can train with Rhythmology to become full time dance instructors, and Pena has enjoyed seeing students progress from having no experience, to their first competition, to teaching classes. But Rhythmology is a lot more than just a dance studio. Pena regularly creates events and special occasions for clients and the community, including the networking group, the Long Island Young Latino Professionals. Tony says the business has rapidly changed over the past four decades due to increased selection, more designers, and the different methods of advertising. “It used to be a relatively simple business,” Tony says. “These days it’s much more involved. The selections you have today and things customers ask for now that didn’t exist then. When we started the business, we were able to do business with just 20 samples, now we have thousands.” Tony says that while the wedding business may look glamorous, it is a lot of hard work to make sure everyone-which can sometimes include bridesmaids, mothers and

grandmothers, in addition to the bride — looks their best and is happy. “You have to work around all the dynamics going on in a bride’s life for six to eight months before she gets married, so there’s a lot of stress. We understand that and don’t take exception to it. We deal with it and make sure everything is resolved, one way or the other,” Tony says.
Bridal Reflections Vice President Cristina DeMarco says that she loves helping brides find such a special item. “It’s so gratifying when you help someone find something beautiful and they feel beautiful about themselves. They’re not just purchasing their gown, they’re having an experience with us,” DeMarco said. The salon also actively gives back to the community. Tony estimates that they have given away over 11,000 prom dresses to high school girls, and around 500 wedding gowns to women who have served or have fiancées in the military. “We’re fortunate enough to do the kind of business that allows us to have that excess inventory from samples or gowns that were never picked up,” Tony said. “Our business has continued to succeed and I think we’re very blessed and I think part of it is that we’re in unison with our community in many ways.”

The wedding day is one of the most memorable and stressful days in a person’s life. In the months leading up to the big day, there are flowers to be bought, cakes to be tasted, rings to be sized, but for a bride, one of the most, if not the most, important part is picking out the dress they have been dreaming of their whole life. Bridal Reflections in Carle Place has helped that dream come true a little easier for 40 years. The store carries a wide selection of bridal gowns, bridesmaids’ dresses, eveningwear, jewelry and accessories, featuring both well known and up and coming designers. But storeowner Tony Micari says that what sets Bridal Reflections apart is customer service. “Everywhere has good fashion and you can pick and choose where you get your fashion. What cuts the cake is what you do after you order the gown. How do you alter it, how do you service the customer, how do you follow up on detail?” Tony said. Previous clients will often come back with their children and word of mouth drives the business. “If you remember you were treated nicely, when the time comes, you’re not going anyplace else. I feel that’s our strong niche and we appreciate that,” Tony said. Tony’s wife Maria started the business 40 years ago, opening up the first Bridal Reflections store in Massapequa. Shortly after, Tony got

Greek Corner has the feel of a traditional Greek cafe, with piped in toe-tapping bouzouki music and the staff putting out a vast array of dishes from behind the counters that line one side of the restaurant. The restaurant offers Greek specialties plus Italian items, club sandwiches and burgers and breakfast omelettes served from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day. With nearly 150 items on the menu, there’s something for everyone at Greek Corner. Typical Greek dishes include spanakopita (spinach and feta baked in flaky filo dough); grape leaves stuffed with rice and cooked in lemon juice and olive oil; roasted eggplant salad; gyros; and grilled skewers of pork, lamb, chicken and beef. There is whole grilled fresh fish every day. Pikilia, one of the most popular taverna dishes throughout Greece, are samplers offering a little of everything. The antipasta pikilia — large enough for two — brings together spinach pie, feta cheese, olives, tomatoes, onions, taramosalta (red caviar with lemon, oil
and fresh whipped potatoes), eggplant salad and grape leaves. The meat pikilia contains meatballs, two types of souvlaki, gyro, Greek sausage and chicken sausage. There’s another Greek Corner in Franklin Square (without the grilled fish or steaks); both are owned by brothers Dominick and Mario Rapitis. Mario received an education as a pastry chef at the New York Culinary Institute and Dominick says he received an unofficial education when he lived in France for six years, hanging out with culinary student friends. All cooking and baking is done on the premises. In addition to typical Greek desserts — baklava, galaktoboureko and katafi – there is chocolate mousse cake, tiramisu and carrot cake. Colors and flavors explode in southern hemisphere treats By Lyn Dobrin

I could fill an entire article just listing the ingredients of halo-halo, a dessert served at the Filipino restaurant Guiradelco in Westbury. Halo-halo, served in a tall ice cream soda glass, contains jackfruit, string coconut and tapioca. The bits of bright color came from sweet purple yam and sweet palm fruit (red and green). There was ice milk. And mango ice cream on top. And a little square of flan, a remnant of three centuries of Spanish colonization. In Tagalog, a Filipino dialect, “halo” means “mix” and that’s exactly what you do with all those ingredients, creating a treat that is creamy, crunchy, chewy and sweet all at once. Guiradelco is bright and cheerful with cafe curtains on the large storefront windows. It has the feel of a place you might find in Manila, although it has been in Westbury for 20 years. And despite its long tenure, this culinary gem appears to be somewhat unknown to locals, perhaps due to its hidden location; it’s down a street off Post Ave. that seems to lead nowhere.
The food is offered from a steam table; the pictures above the table are hard to match with the dishes themselves but the staff is helpful explaining the dishes and guiding you to those you might like. The food is generally not spicy but the
flavors are strong. Filipino food is a hearty cuisine that relies a great deal on meat. A very popular dish in the Philippines is kare-kare, a stew of oxtail and vegetables in a strongly flavored peanut sauce. Sisig is
chopped pork and pork liver with onions and green chili pepper; pakbet is mixed vegetables in a shrimp paste—we had a rough time with the bitter melon in the dish, definitely an appropriately named ingredient. Our waiter, Sonny, assured us that it was supposed to be really good for us, “Like medicine,” he said. We loved the fresh lumpia, a spring roll made without frying, filled with mixed vegetable and served with a peanut sauce. We also enjoyed the crisp skin and tender meat of fried galunggong (also called GG), a fish in the herring family. The beef stew with red pepper and green olives was deeply flavored. The BBQ pork on skewers was well seasoned. All the dishes are served with bowls of rice. The best time to visit Guiradelco is on the weekend when there is the largest variety of dishes. There is a small shop attached to the restaurant where you can buy Filipino specialties and baked goods. Guiradelco is located at 324 Post Ave. in Westbury, about a block past Bravo Supermarket. Paradise Cove Offers Jamaican Cuisine By Chris Boyle

Thanks to Paradise Cove, you don’t need a passport to enjoy the delicacies of the Carribean. Paradise Cove, located at 705 Prospect Avenue, is a take-out restaurant that specializes in Caribbean and Jamaican-style food that opened its doors in February of this year. In addition to take-out, the establishment also boasts a comfortable and charming in-house dining experience. Owner Sandra Blake-Dean was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, and came to the United States in 1990 along with her family. Surprisingly, for someone who currently owns their own restaurant, Blake-Dean’s career for most of her life was actually in a completely different industry. “I worked in banking most of my life here in America, but opening a
restaurant with my dad was always something that I wanted to do,” she said. “When I was a child growing up in Jamaica, my father had his own restaurant...he had years of experience, and he passed that onto me. So, later on, we decided to put up a restaurant together here in Westbury.” Unfortunately, the dream of going into the family business with her father was tragically cut short when he suffered a stroke and passed away in 2011 at the age of 74. However, the desire to follow in her father’s footsteps was only intensified, as now Blake-Dean was doing so in honor of his cherished memory. “We had just signed the lease and everything when he passed away,” she said. “He’s not here physically to help me with it, but I’m sure his spirit is here somewhere helping me.” We were lucky enough to sample some of Paradise Cove’s unique
culinary wares, and found them to be quite mouth-watering. Of special note is the Ox Tail, which BlakeDean said is most likely their biggest seller, and with good reason; they are tender, delicious hunks of beef with a slight kick of spice that practically melt in your mouth. The Jerk Chicken, a Jamaican stand-by, was juicy yet sweet, and when served with a spicy Jerk Chicken sauce, delivered an out-ofthis world taste that mere words in a newspaper can not convey. Served with a delightful cabbage medley on the side, Paradise Cove, will have diners coming back whenever their tummy is rumbling for some good, flavorful food. Currently living in Deer Park with her husband and two children, Blake-Dean said that, when it came to choosing the location of her Paradise Cove, only one area in particular stood out to her. “I’ve always liked Westbury...it’s
very diverse over here,” she said. “There’s a majority of Caribbean people, Jamaican, Trinidadian, who live over here. I knew this would be the perfect area to open a restaurant with the great community that we have here.” Paradise Cove also offers services such as professional catering and party hosting; in addition, monthly events such as karaoke and poetry nights are in the works. However, the one service that the restaurant stresses more than anything, according to Blake-Dean, is to make the customer feel at home. “It’s important that when the customer comes in that they get a good impression...we smile, talk with them, and let them sample the food if they want,” she said. “The taste of the food is important, but if I go somewhere with good food but the service stinks, I don’t think I’d go back. Service should measure up to the taste of the food.”

Yin and yang is the interplay between seemingly opposite or contrary forces that interact to form a whole greater than either separate part. My definition of yin and yang is Lillian and Leisa Dent and their restaurant LL Dent in Carle Place. Lillian, the mother, the diplomatic host running the front of the house, seeing that the diners are treated properly; Leisa, the daughter and the chef, rambunctious and outspoken, making sure the food comes out of the kitchen as expected. These are two very different people as exemplified by their relationship to butter. Lillian, who grew up on a farm in Evans, Georgia, recalls that one of her chores was to milk a cow and churn butter for the family. She says, “I hated the smell of milk and butter and I do not eat any creamy dairy products, including butter.” Leisa, however, loves butter so much that when she four years old she figured out how to open the refrigerator and was discovered sitting in the corner of the kitchen devouring a bar of butter.
Together these two very different women have created a popular restaurant serving good southern style food. Although Lillian stays out of the kitchen at LL Dent, she cooked at home when her children were growing up and a lot of the dishes that Leisa creates are from her mother’s kitchen. However, says Lillian, Leisa has changed them to healthier versions, such as collard greens, traditionally cooked with ham hocks,
are now made with smoked turkey providing the same depth of flavor with less fat. One of the most popular dishes on the LL Dent menu is the southern fried chicken, another family dish that Leisa has tweaked. The menu also boasts other down south staples such as crispy fried chicken livers, pulled pork, Cajun Cornish game hen, and chicken and waffles. They haven’t forgotten about dessert
either. You’ll want to save room for banana pudding, peach cobbler or sweet potato pie. Grand cakes are a part of southern cooking and LL Dent also offers delicious red velvet, coconut and pound cake. A good way to sample the LL Dent menu is their brunch (Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.). There you’ll always find catfish, fried chicken, mac and cheese, okra and tomatoes, blackeyed peas, collard greens, candied yams, potato salad, rice, cornbread, omelets, waffles with strawberries and whipped cream plus specials. And all this southern goodness is served in a homey, hospital environment, where diners are treated like family. “We wanted people to feel as if they were being entertained in our home. Our customers say they feel like they’ve been to a family reunion or they’re eating a family’s house. That’s rewarding to us because that’s exactly what we’re aiming for.
