The SCA Is Spring-ing Into Action!

3

April Message from 2015 SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASp With the Spring comes cleaning, refreshing, and most importantly renewing! As in renewing your SCA Membership! The Sacramento Claims Association’s ongoing 2015 Membership Drive continues throughout the month of April. In addition to luncheon discounts, receiving the monthly ANN SCA newsletter, and attending entertaining social events, an SCA Membership provides an individual and/or company with fantastic access to a vast number of individuals and organizations in the insurance industry. Please visit the SCA website at www.sacramentoclaims.org or ask any Board Member at the next scheduled event for more information! 2015 SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASp Barrish Pelham & Associates, Inc.

March’s “SCA Night at the Sacramento Kings” was a huge success! The event sold out well before game day and everyone had a great time watching Slamson and the Kings handily beat the Hornets. A huge THANK YOU goes out to the SCA Social committee, particularly Jason Kettlehut and Tami Umland for their “above and beyond” effort! Part of “Spring-ing Into Action” for 2015, the SCA is planning to host other similar social events throughout the year. So, keep visiting the website and reading the monthly newsletter for more information.

The month of April for the SCA sees the return of the education seminar luncheons at the Lions Gate Hotel! On Thursday, April 16th, Mr. Michael O’Connor, of O’Connor Engineering, will present a D.O.I. certified, two hour continuing education presentation on “Code Upgrades - Meaning, Effects, & Strategies”. Registration will begin at the normal luncheon time of 11:30am, food will be served at 12:00pm with the presentation starting shortly thereafter. We will have a short break at 1:00pm with the presentation continue page 6

Join or Renew Your SCA Membership Now for 2015! The 2015 Sacramento Claims Association Membership Drive is now in full swing! Annual membership do provide a significant financial support to the organization. And, a strong membership helps to keep a non-profit like SCA viable and alive. Without all of us together there would be no SCA. “This organization could not maintain the strong standing we enjoy today without the support of all our members,” stated SCA President Steve Moore.

Overall membership and meeting attendance has been consistent and substantial. Still, the sense that there aren’t many adjusters at any given function remains pervasive.

“We continue to encourage the carrier claims people and independent adjusters participate, and to attend and become more involved,” Moore added.

“The Sacramento Claims Association is always committed to maintaining a high degree of professional courtesy within our ranks.”

The organization has been actively taking measures to continue to raise its standing within the community at large, as well, contributing to local charitable causes at every turn. There seems to be a bit of a revival of carriers supporting their claims people joining and supporting their local associations.

The SCA Board has opted to continue to offer annual FREE Memberships to insurance carrier adjusters. Completion and submission of a simple membership application now allows all such claims people the benefits of membership. Sign up or renew now at www.SacramentoClaims.org.

Former Roseville insurance agent convicted of stealing school district employees’ identities

5

Crime targeted victims across 13 counties ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Magaly Morales, 51, was sentenced March 25, 2015 to three years and four months in state prison after pleading guilty to forgery, identity theft and aggravated white collar crime enhancement for losses over $100,000.

Morales was arrested in December 2014 on multiple felony counts for submitting 299 fraudulent annuity applications and collecting more than $230,000 in advanced commissions. “Licensed agents and brokers have a fiduciary responsibility to their clients and the companies they represent,” said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones.

“When someone violates that trust, as Morales did by stealing peoples’ identities, it erodes consumer confidence.”

As a licensed insurance agent for Great American Life Insurance Company, Morales gained access to policyholders’ data from 2009 to 2011. Morales used her authority as an agent to steal information from school district employees in 13 counties across the state, from Shasta to San Luis Obispo. The largest number of victims was in San Joaquin County. Using the stolen identities of innocent victims, Morales submitted annuity applications to Life Insurance Company of

the Southwest and received advanced commissions on annuity policies for people who had no idea they owned such policies.

Due to Morales’ illegal activity, identity theft victims did not have to pay any premiums on the fraudulent policies.

This case was a joint effort between the California Department of Insurance and the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office. Magaly Morales is also known as Maglay Egas

As of January 15, 2015 Magaly Morales is no longer licensed to transact insurance in California.

Check a California Licensed agent’s status and see if they have any enforcement actions. The victims worked at various school districts spread throughout the following 13 counties: Calaveras Contra Costa El Dorado Merced Placer Sacramento San Joaquin San Luis Obispo Santa Clara Shasta Solano Stanislaus Yolo

ending around 2:00pm. We are trying out a new format in order to maximize attendance. This is a very important and relevant topic to anyone involved with the insurance industry!

In both May and June the SCA will be hosting Social events. An evening cocktail event on May 21st, at Mayahuel bar promises to be another well planned and fun gathering! On Friday, June 5th, the annual fundraising SCA golf tournament will once again be held at Lincoln Hills G.C.. In closing, I hope everyone had a successful first quarter in 2015 and their second quarter looks even brighter! I hope you can carve out some time from your busy schedules to do some Spring cleaning, refreshing, and renewing! As always, the SCA Board of Directors remains open and amenable to its members questions and concerns.

Asbestos Awareness Keeps Every Job Site Safe! By Haven Fry

Since many building materials contain asbestos, remodel, repair and demolition activity in commercial and residential structures required to remove asbestos-containing materials may cause the release of asbestos fibers into the air. These airborn fibers are hazardous. Asbestos is still being mined, imported, and used in the United States despite being confirmed as a human carcinogen.

JESSICA WARD Named New JM Environmental Project Manager

A Sacramento surgery center was a project of note for Jessica, three operating rooms and a 28 bed recovery room were affected by an electrical fire. She scheduled her team of employees and subcontractors to work around the clock in 24 hour shifts, to complete the job in 4 days, exceeding the expectations of the owners of the surgery center.

John Moore, President of JM ENVIRONMENTAL, INC., is pleased to announce Jessica Ward as the firm’s new Project Manager/Estimator. “Jessica brings loads to the JM team with her extensive experience as a Project Manager / Estimator for ServiceMaster for the past 5 years, and her 5 years with Travelers Insurance,” Moore stated. “As a Project Manager and Estimator for ServiceMaster, Jessica averaged 15 new water, fire, sewage or mold Property Losses each week, while managing 40-45 existing Property Losses at various stages. Understanding the sense of urgency and the need to fast track large scale commercial property losses are among Jessica’s strengths.”

To her credit, she has also worked with high profile public entities on many water main claims, Moore further expressed. “Keeping many clients satisfied on these types of property losses takes a cool head with excellent managerial skills. Contents inventory, water damage clean up, and assisting the property owners file claims with the third party property claims administrator for the public entity are all part of the job with this type of loss.”

Jessica’s experience with Travelers Insurance included Inside Property Losses, Xactimate Trainer for 3 California offices, CAT Claims for California wildfires, and she managed the IA claim process desk for 9 states, working with hundreds of Independent Adjusters. Jessica has her WRT and ASD IICRC certifications, EPA Lead RRP Certification, and is in the process of completing her Asbestos Supervisor Certification. In her spare time, Jessica loves Do It Yourself renovation projects, and is quite the artisan painter. New JM Project Mgr., Jessica Ward, may be reached for any Asbestos, Lead, Demolition, Mold, Bio-Hazard, or Drug Lab Remediation job; at 916-870-3506 & jessicaw@jmenv.com.
