Mystery is a word with many meanings and definitions. It is also a word that is subject to personal opinions and interpretations. For many, the word mystery brings images of dark misty nights in to mind – often with a full moon on top of it all. But there is more to the word than warewolves and vampyres.

A mystery is anything that is kept secret or remains in any way unexplained or unknown. It can either be something physically covered or veiled, like for example ”the warehouse conversion” by MCK Architects. Or it can be more of an abstract form of mystery; where you look at an object or image and just get a feeling of something that is hidden beneath the surface. This is a sensation that is hard to describe, but it is very common, and most people will share the same view un certain things.

For instance, the old well-known painting ”A man in a room” by Rembrandt. Certain factors in this painting lead us into a mysterious mindset. The lighting, long shadows and the fact that an old man is playing the piano in a large room all by himself, are setting us into this mindset.

Mystery is also used to adress something that is obscure or crazy. It can be something that is too weird for you to wrap you head around; something mind boggling. A good example of this is the painting by Nathalie Pirotte, ”On a table”.

I chose the word ”mystery” because I personally find the word and its meanings intriguing. As mentioned above, you find many different aspects of the meaning in different pieces. I find it interesting when some things are left unsaid, or left to your imagination. In this way you are left thinking and it allows you to gather a personal opinion or ”plot”.
