DISCORSO ALLA PARI OVVERO ESERCIZI DI CONOSCENZA di GIORGIO BONOMI

L’ARTISTA O DELLA CREAZIONE L’arte è una forma di conoscenza. È una conoscenza pre-logica, intuitiva, emozionale, percettiva ma non per questo meno profonda della conoscenza razionale.

L’artista crea “ex nihilo”: dal nulla o, meglio, da ciò che trova, siano oggetti o conoscenze, sensazioni o materiali, elabora l’opera, un prodotto che è anche momento di nuova conoscenza.

Anna Piratti con questa opera(zione) si cimenta nella conoscenza dell’altro, attraverso non solo quella del soggetto che si presta al progetto, ma anche attraverso la consapevolezza del processo crativo-conoscitivo che quel soggetto ha messo in movimento nel momento stesso che ha scelto un oggetto – o è l’oggetto che ha scelto lui? – per un “discorso alla pari”.

Il DAP, allora, si articola su due piani: quello della “parità” tra l’artista e il partecipante all’operazione, e quello tra quest’ultimo e l’oggetto scelto. L’oggetto, infatti, non deve essere preso casualmente, ma con cordialità, con affetto e qui è lecito rammentare gli “oggetti d’affezione” di Man Ray che, da cose banali o comuni, diventavano, con l’intervento dell’artista, opere d’arte.

Il lettore, come l’osservatore alla mostra di questi lavori qui pubblicati, potrebbe pensare che si tratti di “fotografie” e che Piratti sia una “fotografa”, ma non è così. In realtà, Anna Piratti è un’artista che lavora con materiali “speciali”: uomini, donne, idee e sentimenti, parole ed oggetti, e quant’altro sia utile a stabilire un rapporto tra lei e il partecipante, tra questo e l’oggetto. La fotografia – che è uno strumento tecnico – non è che il fissaggio di questo processo che non avviene in un attimo; non a caso l’esperienza si sviluppa nella serialità, cioè in una sequenza di cinque (a volte sette) fotografie, più una come sintesi di tre di quelle.

IL PARTECIPANTE O DELLA PERSONA (O MASCHERA) Chiamiamo “partecipante” il soggetto (uomo, donna o ragazzo/a) che si è prestato all’azione – in questo caso circa cento – per cui questo è, ovviamente, anche una “persona”.

“Persona” è un termine che alle sue origini significava “maschera”, la maschera che gli attori del teatro antico indossavano. In un qualche modo, ci sembra che la fotografia possa essere paragonata alla maschera. Se, infatti, questa copre il volto di chi la porta, la fotografia, con il fissare un istante di un volto che è vivo e che continua a vivere, di fatto lo nasconde, perché solo “apparentemente” quella della istantanea fotografica è l’immagine della persona, dato che questa nel frattempo è cambiata, anche se impercettibilmente (sono cresciuti i capelli, la pelle si è invecchiata, insomma il corpo fisico è mutato); in altre parole, il passato è qualche cosa che inesorabilmente non c’è più né ritorna identico a se stesso; tutto muta, istante dopo istante.

Si può fissare il tempo solo con un’illusione. Ecco perché avviciniamo l’immagine fotografica alla maschera che impedisce di vedere quello che poi non è, comunque, mai lo stesso, ma pirandellianamente, “uno, nessuno, centomila”.

Certo, quanto detto rispecchia la rigidità della logica, mentre nella realtà concreta la pratica (e il senso comune che, spesso, è più saggio

delle più sofisticate filosofie) ci dà delle “certezze” e delle “verità” che ci aiutano a rendere la vita meno difficile per cui la “persona” è si la maschera (di se stesso) ma anche un individuo che, pur mutando, è sempre lo stesso, e come tale lo (ri)conosciamo nel tempo.

L’ISTANTE O DELL’ATTIMO FUGGENTE Se il poeta latino Orazio invita al “carpe diem” (“vivi l’attimo”), il Faust di Goethe dice: “all’attimo fuggente: arrestati! sei bello!”.

Ecco, la fotografia fissa, “pietrifica” un attimo. Questo, già in Platone, si differenzia dall’ora che è quel punto di trapasso tra ciò che è appena stato e ciò che sta avvenendo, cioè un punto (nei fatti “inesistente”) tra passato e futuro. L’attimo invece, secondo una lunga tradizione filosofica che da Platone arriva fino ad Heidegger, è “il presente autentico” o, come dice Karl Jaspers, “l’abolizione del tempo, la presenza dell’eterno”.

Così Piratti compie questa operazione meta-fisica, cioè fissa quell’attimo in cui il partecipante dialoga con l’oggetto, in cui lo “com-prende”, cioè lo conosce a fondo, perché “comprendere” significa etimologicamente “prendere insieme”, “abbracciare”, e nella conoscenza noi “abbracciamo” con la ragione (ma anche con il sentimento) l’oggetto, la persona, l’idea o quello che sia, che dobbiamo porre davanti a noi (realmente o virtualmente) per poterlo conoscere. Noi stessi possiamo (ri)-conoscerci solo se mettiamo il “me” davanti all’“io”, naturalmente questo avviene con lo specchio, ma può avvenire anche con quello “specchio tecnologico” che è la fotografia. Ricordiamo, a questo proposito, che il “guardarsi allo specchio” non è una pratica narcisistica di segno tradizionale o anche deteriore, cioè credere che Narciso muoia, per affogamento o per consunzione, perché innamorato della sua immagine riflessa nello stagno. Per noi Narciso si “scopre” proiettato sul pelo dell’acqua e quindi vuole “conoscersi”, “comprendere”, così deve “abbracciarsi” per cui, nell’atto, finisce nell’acqua e muore. E non è un caso, perché la conoscenza, come ci insegna il mito di Ulisse nella versione dantesca, è rischio e, a volte, morte (Ulisse, proprio per amore di conoscere e di scoprire l’ignoto, varca le Colonne d’Ercole, entra nell’Oceano e, per una tempesta, naufraga e muore).

Nell’operazione della nostra artista, c’è spesso gioco, ironia, ma ci sono anche aspetti “tragici”, “dolorosi”, come può esserlo la vita di alcuni dei partecipanti: si leggano le didascalie che accompagnano le fotografie, queste si presentano appunto ora serene e divertenti, ora invece pensose e drammatiche.

LA SEQUENZA O DEL TEMPO (LINEARE O ESPERIENZIALE) Oramai è noto che abbiamo due concezioni del tempo: quella della scienza, che lo vuole lineare, fatto di attimi in successione e reversibile; e quello della durata, della coscienza, dell’esperienza, della vita propria.

Se, per il primo, i giorni passano uno dopo l’altro, sempre uguali (di ventiquattro ore …), per il secondo concetto di tempo, invece, le ore passano assai diversamente, infatti se si è in un pomeriggio uggioso e annoiati il tempo non passa mai, mentre per due amanti il tempo fugge via rapidissimo e le ore sembrano minuti.

Orbene, possiamo applicare al lavoro qui presentato entrambi i concetti di tempo. Infatti la sequenza richiede un “tempo”, un tempo di conoscenza, di posa, di esecuzione, di stampa (allo stesso modo il partecipante ha avuto bisogno di “tempo”, per stabilire il suo “discorso alla pari” con il suo oggetto). È indubbio che questo è un tempo sequenziale, che scorre su una linea retta, anzi per vari segmenti, sempre però di linee rette, dato che ci possono essere delle pause, dei ripensamenti, delle soluzioni di continuità, dei ritorno indietro per poi nuovamente andare avanti. Tuttavia, se pensiamo al concetto di “attimo”, chiarito subito qui sopra, è indiscutibile che tutta l’operazione è basata anche su un tempo fatto di emozioni, di sensazioni, di vissuti personali, di memorie, cioè su un tempo interiore in cui ogni istante è diverso dall’altro.

Non è un caso che, storicamente, è stata proprio l’arte visiva, precisamente la pittura, quella cubista e futurista, che ha meglio compreso il tempo bergsonaino, oltre ad avere assimilato la lezione della fotografia e del cinema. Infatti gli artisti che all’inizio del secolo scorso vollero mostrare le sequenze dei piani di un qualsiasi volume o il meccanismo del movimento (il tempo è un concetto indissolubilmente legato a quello di movimento) su una superficie bidimensionale hanno reso materialmente visibile quello che la scienza e la filosofia forse raccontano con un discorso un po’ più complicato.

Anche Piratti non sfugge a questa interpretazione: la sesta immagine non ci mostra il partecipante nella sua individualità unica, bensì la somma computerizzata di tre immagini del soggetto in tre posizioni diverse. Ecco, si pensi, per non fare che due esempi, al Dinamismo di un cane al guinzaglio del 1912 di Giacomo Balla o al Nudo che scende le scale, dello stesso anno, di Marcel Duchamp. Questo è un altro punto in cui l’artista si mostra legata al grande flusso della storia dell’arte, in cui si immerge non per esservi trasportata supinamente ma con un suo proprio linguaggio ed una proposta poetica originale.

In più, quelle due immagini aggiunte a quella più nitida del partecipante appaiono come “sfocate”, più diafane, quindi appaiono come una sorta di “ombra”.

Quello dell’ombra è un concetto /immagine che ha molto affascinato gli artisti di ogni tempo e non solo visivi, ma anche letterati e musicisti, come Richard Strauss che ha musicato un’opera (La donna senz’ombra) con libretto di Hugo von Hofmannsthal; e già Omero e Virgilio avevano rappresentato il dramma dell’ombra – ciò che resta dei defunti – che non può essere abbracciata.

L’ombra infatti è come l’anima, accompagna sempre l’uomo, è una sorta di alter ego, è l’io che possiamo vedere e che fedele ci segue ovunque, e se non si ha ci sono problemi gravi, come le storie letterarie ci dicono.

Or dunque, è proprio in questa sesta immagine con la triplicazione del partecipante, con le sue due “ombre”, che il lavoro acquista forza e diviene realtà dimostrata: diviene così “opera”.

L’OPERA O DELL’ESERCIZIO DI COMUNICAZIONE Si è già accennato al fatto che l’opera di Anna Piratti non consiste nel semplice oggetto visivo ma è un “esercizio”, un “rapporto attivo” (va sottolineato che la parola “opera”, dal latino “opus”, ha la stesa radice del tedesco “üben” che significa “esercitare”; ed “esercitare”, a sua volta, etimologicamente significa “mettere in movimento”, “tenere in attività”).

L’artista stessa definisce il suo operare come “complemento d’argomento”, “un de più l’ablativo”, cioè un “argomentare su”. Infatti all’origine dobbiamo supporre una domanda che lei si pone relativamente “a chi ha il diritto d’argomentare”: naturalmente la risposta non può non essere che “Tutti!”. Così si trova nella situazione operativa, da lei stessa organizzata – si tratta di un vero e proprio set fotografico, cosicché il partecipante può “estraniarsi” dal quotidiano ed essere consapevole di fare una cosa altra, di partecipare ad un’azione artistica –, deve parlare, deve usare il codice verbale che sarà sempre, consciamente o inconsciamente è lo stesso, indicativo ed evocativo, dipendendo l’argomentare dalle motivazioni che hanno portato il soggetto a scegliere quell’oggetto, ma anche da altri stimoli che l’oggetto medesimo nel colloquio gli offre.

Qui l’opera è compiuta: le immagini sono la memoria di un accadimento, di un evento, la loro documentazione che, a sua volta, metterà in moto sensi e sentimenti, ragioni e concetti di chi guarderà queste fotografie, in un “gioco” senza fine, poiché l’arte, quando è tale, dà stimoli, provoca emozioni e pensieri in ogni tempo e in ogni luogo, altrimenti sarebbe solo “moda”, anche bellissima ma destinata

all’invecchiamento e alla marcescenza (al “passare di moda”, appunto), mentre l’arte si afferma sempre ed ovunque, in caso contrario non leggeremmo più i poeti greci o le poesie cinesi.

Oltre alle immagini, sono fondamentali, in questo lavoro, le didascalie, cioè frasi particolarmente significative espresse dal partecipante durante l’operazione artistica: queste parole sono altamente illuminanti e sono inscindibili dall’immagine, ci dicono infatti quello che esprime il soggetto primo del lavoro. Anche qui Piratti si dimostra consapevole del grande fiume della storia artistica, infatti lega il codice visivo (la fotografia) al codice verbale (le frasi), metodo che, iniziato da Picasso, poi diverrà prassi comune a molti artisti, naturalmente con intenti assai diversi gli uni dagli altri.

In più “Discorso alla Pari, già nel suo titolo, si pone come un’opera con forti contenuti etici, ribadendo quella parità (di diritti, di generi, di rapporti, di opportunità e di tante altre cose ancora) che l’uomo faticosamente cerca di raggiungere, e per la quale vale la pena vivere: Anna Piratti, con il suo linguaggio e le sue azioni, offre un notevole contributo alla crescita civile e morale dell’uomo.

PEER DISCUSSION OR EXERCISES OF KNOWLEDGE

THE ARTIST, OR ON CREATION Art is a form of knowledge. It is pre-logical, intuitive, emotional and perceptual knowledge, but this doesn’t make it any less profound than rational knowledge.

The artist creates ex nihilo: out of nothing. Or, rather, out of what he finds, be they objects or know-how, sensations or materials. He develops the work, a product that is also a moment of new knowledge.

With this operation, Anna Piratti ventures into the knowledge of others, not only through that of the subject involved in the project, but also through the awareness of the creative-cognitive process that the subject set in motion the moment he chose an object (or did the object choose him?) for a “peer discussion”.

The PD is thus conducted on two levels: the “equality” of the artist and the person participating in the operation, and that of the latter and the chosen object. Indeed, the object must never be selected randomly, but with warmth and love. Here we can rightly recall Man Ray’s “objects of affection”, which through the artist’s intervention were transformed from commonplace things into works of art.

The reader, like the spectator at the exhibition of the works published here, might think that they are “photographs” and that Piratti is a “photographer”, but this is not actually the case. In reality, Piratti is an artist who works with “special” materials: men, women, ideas and feelings, words and objects, and anything else that can help establish a relationship between her and the participant, and between the participant and the object. Photography – which is a technical instrument – is merely a way of capturing this process, which does not take place instantaneously. Uncoincidentally, the experience develops serially, i.e. in a sequence of five (or sometimes seven) photographs, plus another one combining three of them.

THE PARTICIPANT, OR ON THE PERSON (OR MASK) We use the term “participant” to refer to the subject (man, woman or child) who chose to take part in the action – approximately 100 in this case – and, as a result, the term naturally also refers to a “person”. The word “person” comes from the Latin persona, which originally meant “mask”, i.e. the mask worn by actors in ancient theatre. In a certain way, photographs can be compared to masks. Just as a mask covers its wearer’s face, by capturing an instant on a face that is alive and continues to live, a photograph effectively conceals it, because the snapshot is only “seemingly” an image of the person: in the meantime, he or she has changed, albeit imperceptibly (longer hair and older skin, a changed body). In other words, the past is something that is inevitably gone and no moment can be the same as any other.

Everything changes, second by second. The only way to capture time is with an illusion. That’s why we’re comparing the photographic image to a mask, which keeps us from seeing that which is never the same anyway but, in the words of Pirandello, is “one, no one, and one hundred thousand”. Naturally, what we’ve said here reflects the rigidity of logic, whereas in real life practice (and common sense, often wiser than the most sophisticated philosophies) gives us “certainties” and “truths” that help make our lives easier. Thus, the “person” is indeed a mask (of himself), but is also an individual who, while changing, is ever the same, and this is how we know and recognise him over time.

THE INSTANT, OR ON THE FLEETING MOMENT While the Latin poet Horace taught us carpe diem – seize the day – Goethe’s Faust says: “If the swift moment I entreat: / Tarry a while! you are so fair!”.

There it is: photography captures, “petrifies” a moment. Plato differentiated moment from hour, the transition between what has just been and what is happening, i.e. a point (in “nonexistent” events) between past and future. According to a long philosophical tradition extending from Plato to Heidegger, the moment is “the authentic present” or, according to Karl Jaspers, the abolition of time and “the presence of the eternal”. Piratti thus accomplishes this metaphysical operation. She captures the moment in which the participant dialogues with the object, in which he/she “comprehends” it, i.e. understands it in depth. Because from an etymological standpoint “comprehend” means “grasp together”, “embrace”, and through knowledge and with reason (but also sentiment) we “embrace” the object, the person, the idea or whatever, which we must set before us (really or virtually) in order to know it. Indeed, we can know – and recognise – ourselves only if we set “me” ahead of “ego”. This naturally takes place before a mirror, but it can also occur with that “technological mirror” we call photography. We should remember that “looking at ourselves in the mirror” is neither a traditional nor an inferior narcissistic practice. It doesn’t mean believing that Narcissus dies, drowning or wasting away after falling in love with his image reflected in a pool. Narcissus “finds himself” projected on the surface of the water. He thus wants to “know himself” and “understand himself”, and must thus “embrace himself”. And in so doing, he falls into the pool and dies. This is not a coincidence because, as the myth of Ulysses teaches us in Dante’s version of the story, knowledge means risk and, at times, death (out of his love for knowledge and seeking to discover the unknown, Ulysses crossed the Pillars of Hercules and entered the Ocean, but was shipwrecked in a storm and died).

Our artist’s operation often reveals play and irony, but there are also “tragic” and “painful” aspects, like the lives of some of the participants.

Take a look at the captions accompanying the photographs: some are happy and funny, but others are introspective and dramatic.

THE SEQUENCE, OR ON TIME (LINEAR OR EXPERIENTIAL) Today we know that we have two concepts of time: that of science, according to which it is linear, reversible and composed of a sequence of moments, and that of duration, awareness, experience and life. According to the former, days pass one after the other, ever the same (24 hours long), but for the latter hours pass differently. For example, on a dull, grey afternoon time seems to move slowly, but for lovers it flies by and hours seem like minutes.

At this point, we can apply both concepts of time to the work we are discussing. The sequence requires a “time”, a time of knowledge, posing, execution, printing (just as the participant needed “time” to establish his/her “peer discussion” with the object). There is no question that this is a sequential time that runs along a straight line, in various segments but always on a straight line, since there can be pauses, second thoughts, interruptions and reversals before going forward. Nevertheless, if we think of the concept of “moment”, clarified above, there is no question that the entire operation is also based on a time composed of emotions, sensations, personal experience and memories: an interior time in which no moment is the same.

It is no accident that, historically, it was visual art – painting and, more specifically, that of the Cubists and Futurists – that best understood Bergsonian time and absorbed the lesson of photography and cinema. The artists who, at the turn of the twentieth century, wanted to show the sequence of planes of a volume or the mechanism of motion (time is a concept inextricably tied to that of motion) on a two-dimensional surface, visibly and tangibly rendered what science and philosophy may have discussed in a more complex way.

This interpretation does not escape Piratti: the sixth image does not show us the participant in his or her unique individuality, but the computerised sum of the subject’s three images in three different positions. Here we can cite two of many examples: Giacomo Balla’s Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash (1912) and Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase, painted the same year. This is another point in which the artist proves to be tied to the great flow of the history of art, which she embraces, not to be transported supinely but with her own language and original poetic concept. Moreover, those two images, added to the clearer one of the participant, look “out of focus”, more diaphanous and thus shadowy. The concept/image of shadow is one that has utterly intrigued artists of all eras, visual and otherwise, as well as writers and musicians, such as Richard Strauss, who composed an opera (The Woman without a Shadow) with a libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal; Homer and Virgil also represented the tragedy of shadows – what remains of the dead – who cannot be embraced. Shadows are like the soul: they accompany mankind, like an alter ego. They are the ego that we can see and that follows us everywhere, and literature has taught us that not having one creates problems.

It is in this sixth image, with the triplication of the participant and his/her two “shadows”, that the work acquires power and becomes tangible: it thus becomes a “work”.

THE WORK, OR ON THE EXERCISE OF COMMUNICATION We have already noted that Piratti’s oeuvre does not consist only of the simple visual object but is an “exercise”, an “active relationship” – and here we must note that the word “oeuvre” or “work” comes from the Latin opus, which has the same root as the German üben, meaning “to exercise”. In turn, the word “exercise” means “to put in motion”, “to keep active”.

The artist defines her work as the “complement of argument”, a “more ablative”, i.e. “reasoning about”. In fact, we must initially imagine a question she asks about “who has the right to reason”: the answer is naturally “everyone”. She thus finds herself in the operating condition that she herself has organised – it is a real set for a photo shoot, so that the participant can “remove himself” from everyday life and be aware of doing something else, of participating in an artistic action – and must speak, using the verbal code that will always be the same, consciously or unconsciously. It is indicative and evocative, depending on the argumentation of the reasons that inspired the subject to choose that object, but also on other stimuli that the object offers in this discussion. The work is complete here: the images are the memory of an occurrence, an event, their documentation that, in turn, will set in motion the senses and feelings, the reasons and concepts, of those who gaze at these photographs, in an endless game: because art – when it is art – offers stimuli, provokes emotions and thoughts in all places and times. Otherwise, it would merely be a “fashion”, beautiful, perhaps, but destined to become old and decay (going “out of fashion”). Art, on the other hand, establishes itself always and everywhere. If this weren’t the case, we would no longer read Greek poets or Chinese poetry. In addition to the images, the captions are also fundamental in this work, i.e. the most significant phrases expressed by the participant during this artistic operation. These words are especially enlightening and are inseparable from the image.

Indeed, they tell us what the prime subject of the work expresses. Here as well, Piratti demonstrates that she is aware of the great river of art history and ties a visual code (photograph) with a verbal one (phrases), a method commenced by Picasso and later adopted widely by numerous artists, naturally with varying intents.

Moreover, the title itself – Peer Discussion – comes across as a work with powerful ethical contents, underscoring the equality (of rights, genders, relationships, opportunities and many other aspects) that humans have struggled to achieve and for which it is worth living.

With her language and actions, Piratti offers an important contribution to the civil and moral growth of humankind.

Scegline uno con cui parlare senza sentirti superiore o inferiore, un oggetto tuo pari, d'uso comune, senza particolari significati (quelli arriveranno poi), insomma qualcosa che semplicemente ti piaccia.

The Peer Discussion project starts with the idea of being able to dialogue with any common object: relax, breathe and, in the meantime, look around. An object will call out to you. It will want to talk to you and will inspire you, even if you don’t know why. By getting used to observing the choices underlying various different personal attitudes or the behaviour of others, perhaps we can develop a more attentive eye towards what is not directly visible and immediate, or that simply seems “reasonable, using our sensitive intelligence more and better. I also find it interesting to work in contact with people’s creative side, because this helps my personal development, enriches me and is always a source of inspiration.

Abituandosi a osservare quale scelta stia dietro ai più diversi comportamenti personali o altrui, forse si svilupperà uno sguardo sempre più attento rispetto a ciò che non è direttamente visibile, immediato o che appare semplicemente 'ragionevole', utilizzando meglio e di più la nostra intelligenza sensibile. Trovo inoltre interessante poter lavorare a contatto con il lato creativo delle persone poiché questo mi aiuta nella mia evoluzione personale, mi arricchisce ed è, sempre, fonte di ispirazione.

Anna Piratti nasce in provincia di Venezia il 10 marzo 1973, si forma presso l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, indirizzo pittura, diplomandosi con una tesi in Didattica dell'arte sulla figura di Bruno Munari. Inizia la sua professione artistica nell'editoria disegnando per riviste e pubblicazioni dedicate all'infanzia. Realizza in seguito svariati progetti pittorici, allestimenti, grafiche e superfici digitali per aziende e privati, sviluppa performance e workshop per una committenza pubblica e privata. Ăˆ consulente presso Enti pubblici, Associazioni private e Aziende per i quali progetta percorsi formativi che utilizzano i linguaggi delle arti visive. Il progetto Discorso Alla Pari è una ricerca che interpreta il desiderio di avere con il pubblico un contatto diretto e uno scambio autentico su un piano estetico. Vive e lavora a Padova.

Anna Piratti was born in the Province of Venice on 10 March 1973. She studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice, receiving her diploma upon presentation of an Art Education thesis on Bruno Munari. Piratti began her artistic career in the publishing industry, creating illustrations for children's magazines and publications. Afterwards, she produced a variety of pictorial works, installations, graphic works and digital screens for businesses and individuals, and organized performances and workshops for public and private clients. She is a consultant for public organizations, private associations and businesses, designing educational projects that utilize the language of visual arts. Peer Discussion is a project that interprets the desire to have direct contact with the public and real interaction on an aesthetic level. Piratti lives and works in Padua.
