In Charleville, France, at the biggest puppet festival in the world, imagine my pride overhearing audience members proclaiming “genial!” (genius) “les marionettistes du Calgary.” They were talking about The Old Trout Puppet Workshop. For the lucky seventh Festival, for the first time, we are thrilled to present the Old Trouts on stage in not one, but two different shows, the world-renowned Famous Puppet Death Scenes, and the brand-new Trunk Puppet. The Old Trouts and I share a long and sordid history stretching far beyond their ranch house genesis. So it is with confidence and great expectation that I pass the IFAO torch to Bob Davis and Peter Balkwill. Thanks to IFAO’s artists, volunteers, and hard-working staff for the great times and all the wonderful memories.

An original and highly imaginative piece that succeeds in creating a delicate and beautiful theatrical world. –Shai Bar Yaakov, Yediot Arohonot

FROM THE DEPTH OF UNSPEAKABLE MEMORIES Through a haunted gaze, a cabaret singer tells the story of three sisters forced to hide in a tiny cold room during the Holocaust. Waiting for their mother to return, the sisters try preserving a shadow of the life they once knew. While reality’s falling apart, they create a fantastic and absurd world, proving imagination can’t be silenced even in the darkest times. Swinging between musical cabaret and contemporary puppetry for adults, humor and tragedy are woven together for a powerful theatrical experience.

YAEL RASOOLY and YAARA GOLDRING (Israel) Since meeting as students of the School of Visual Theater in Jerusalem, directors Yael Rasooly and Yaara Goldring have developed compelling object and puppet theater for adult audiences. Their images and stories juxtapose a delicate pairing of humour with a terrifying situation. • yaelrasooly.com HAZIRA PERFORMANCE ART ARENA (Jerusalem, Israel) Encompassing theater, dance, video arts, and multimedia, HaZira is an important artistic institution unique to the heart of Israel’s local cultural discourse • hazira.org.il

For 18 minutes …(a) delicious thriller, reaching a height of comic trashiness that rivals Tarantino. But parents should rest assured: it is safe to bring your children (eight and up nevertheless). THE WHITE WOMAN

FAMILY

SERIES

Solitude can be a special place, or a world so small it fits in her suitcase. Silent, slow and deliberate, steering away from a linear narrative, The White Woman is a poetic and visual performance, without words. Examining the close relationship between performer, object, and viewer, the show centers on a character living in a world filled with puppets, images and allegories. The black-and-white tones inspire layers of meaning while The White Woman shares an intimate moment with you. Avec La femme blanche, la solitude est un espace privilégié. Avec un silence et une lenteur délibérés, et à des lieux du récit linéaire, La femme blanche est une performance poétique et visuelle, sans paroles.

FAMOUS PUPPET DEATH SCENES The Old Trouts return with their classic show. After many years on the road in Europe, the US, and the rest of Canada, they’ve grown wrinkled and semi-feral, but they’ve come home with a promise: to cure your fear of death. Say goodbye to anxiety about difficult choices, dreaded birthdays, and desperate pleas for immortality through fame, art, or progeny. With their collection of famous scenes from the absolute best puppet shows in history, including Edward’s Last Prance, from The Ballad of Edward Grue by Samuel Groanswallow, and the unforgettable Bipsy’s Mistake, from Bipsy and Mumu Go to the Zoo by Fun Freddy, the Trouts will deconstruct your traumatized psyche and reconstruct it so death means nothing. In a way, they promise ever-lasting life, through a puppet show. That’s right. THE OLD TROUT PUPPET WORKSHOP (Calgary) In the blustery winter of 1999, with the dreaded Y2K looming, a gang of childhood friends huddled on a southern Alberta ranch, seeking mutual protection in case of apocalypse. With the simple reasoning the world will always need puppetry— even in the face of an economic and technological collapse— they founded the Old Trout Puppet Workshop, and premiered to a bunkhouse full of cowboys and Hutterites. Ever since those uncertain, savage days in the wilderness, the Old Trouts have toured the world with their puppets, written and illustrated books, crafted immense sculptures, taught eager young apprentices their secrets, and made films. The Old Trouts also form half of trance-blues band, Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir. Next up (if the world doesn’t end), a show in a Roman amphitheatre in Lyon, France.

T H E HOOP ITSELF R E P R ESENTS UNITY, I N CLUSIVENESS A ND EQUALITY

S A G O W S K O Sagowsko was inspired by the Anishnaabe (Ojibway) hoop dance story taught when Sandra Lamouche first started learning to hoop dance in 2005. Pukawiss, the disowned one, was fascinated with nature. His father, who wished he was more like his older brother, a great hunter and warrior, disowned him. Pukawiss left his family and performed for different villages, eventually creating the hoop dance.

SANDRA LAMOUCHE (Lethbridge, Cree) Sagowsko, “bush woman,” is the nickname of Sandra Lamouche, who is a member of the International Dance Council and holds a B.A. in Native American Studies from the University of Lethbridge. Sandra is completing a Master of Arts Degree in Indigenous Studies from Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario.

Sagowsko expresses the sacredness and strengths of Native women, the exploration and discovery of nature, the devastation of loss and disconnection, and finally, feeling the heartbeat of the earth and reconnecting. Sagowsko represents a sort of healing ritual one may experience when able to be oneself, to live in a connected way with identity and the world.

Dance is one of the ways that we reconnect the sacred hoop, which has been broken through colonization and assimilation as we recreate our reality to benefit all of creation.

I am my ancestors. WE are our ancestors. Not just descendants of our ancestors, but we are experiencing the same things they have experienced for years! We are fighting the same fight. We are being our ancestors, by being ourselves. –Sandra Lamouche

P A N E L THURSDAY THINKING Does puppet theatre help us understand our world? Artists Alice Nelson (pg 14), Alain Moreau (pg 8), Kenn McLeod & Chrystene Ells (pg 19) answer how a puppet, with a brain of fluff or wood, plays a role in sociology, psychology, and other ‘ologies’. Moderated by Wendy Passmore (pg 6). (Light lunch provided.) Hailing from Regina, KENN MCLEOD is a performer, director, and educator, always on the lookout for new ways to expand his theatrical repertoire. WHO’S THE PUPPET NOW?

ANIMATING THE SPIRIT

Pick up this astonishing collection of photographic portraits of the brightest lights in the world of puppetry, mask, and animated objects. Photographer Sean Dennie takes you behind the mask to meet the person behind the art. Who’s the Puppet Now? is a beautiful hard-bound book comprised of over 100 imaginative and revealing portraits, captured by Dennie during six IFAO from 2002-2013. Artists’ thoughts, words, and philosophies accompany the stunning photography.

A mask is a vessel which may act as conduit for characters, spirits, and beings to visit. Using objects from Journey of Ten Moons, a Dell’Arte play about early explorers’ hubris combined with a Yurok legend, Xstine casts Coyote, the trickster, as the central hero and villain of this two month exhibition.

Visit animatedobjects.ca to purchase a copy, or drop by the Festival Info / Merchandise Booth during IFAO. CAOS thanks The Calgary Foundation for their support of Who’s the Puppet Now? and of the Festival Digital Video Archive, which has digitized six years of IFAO performances.

XSTINE COOK (Calgary) A puppet maker, theatre artist, community activist, and filmmaker, Cook studied mask and puppetry in Bali, Italy, France, and the West Coast of Canada.
