Ain’t Proud Beg! From emotional, heart-tugging stories to cute blind date ads – when it comes to finding adopters for our homeless animals, anything goes! We’ll admit that we’ve certainly come up with some pretty wild ideas to entice potential adopters to check us out, and we won’t be afraid to use a few more if we need to! But then it dawned on us. Animals aren’t meant to be looked at through a cage door or read about on a

website – in order for their wonderful personalities to truly shine through, they need to get up close and personal with people! So, we’re getting our residents out of their kennels and offering up a menu of interactive animal-centered events with the goal of finding them their forever homes. One of the most stressful experiences that we as pet owners can face is the uncertainty and worry that comes when a pet is missing. Even more heart wrenching is the fact that of the estimated 5-7 million animals that enter our country’s shelters and animal control facilities, only 10% - 30% of dogs and less than 5% of cats are reclaimed by their owners. Animal Friends, along with Allegheny County District Attorney Steven A. Zappala, Jr. and Allegheny County Treasurer John K. Weinstein, in partnership with Fragasso Financial Advisors and the Allegheny County Abused Animal Relief Fund (AAARF), is proud to participate in an initiative that will reunite lost pets with their owners by putting free microchip scanners

Dog lovers should be sure to keep an eye on our events calendar for our next “Mutt Mob”… a flash mob with a canine twist! During a “mob,” shelter staff and volunteers descend on a chosen location (downtown Pittsburgh or another local community) with nearly every dog in our adoption kennel in tow.
in the hands of every municipal police department in Allegheny County. This unique public-private partnership kicked off in early July when Animal Friends hosted a press conference announcing the project and distributed the first scanners to thankful police chiefs from more than 40 municipal police departments. Shelters and animal control facilities routinely scan incoming dogs and cats; those with microchips can be quickly identified and returned to their owners. Without operable scanners, police officers are at a disadvantage when they find a lost or stray pet, and must simply wait for the owner to call the station to report a missing pet. If the owner doesn’t call, the pet is transferred to a shelter or animal control agency, often located miles outside of the municipality. Shelters and animal control agencies are required by law to hold an unlicensed pet for only 48 hours before euthanizing or placing the pet up for adoption. With a scanner within the municipal police department, owners can be identified quickly, which means a better chance of reunification with

their pets and less of a burden on the region’s already overwhelmed shelters. The cost of the project was underwritten by the AAARF fund and Allegheny County’s Criminal Forfeiture Program, which means that no tax dollars were used to fund this life-saving project. The way we see it, this project is a winwin-win for police officers, frantic owners and, of course, lost pets.
You’ll find that our feline events are truly the cat’s meow! We’re combining delicious coffee and freeroaming felines for our “Cat Cafés” that will allow you to enjoy a cup o’ joe while meeting our adoptable cats and kittens. And for the kids (or kids at heart), we’re hosting the “Cat’s Pajamas Party.” Everyone is invited to join us – in their pjs – for playtime as our kittens scamper and frolic all around. After everyone is all tuckered out, we’ll settle in our beanbag chairs for a bedtime story and cuddling. Does it get any better than that?

By Kristina Hout, Low-Cost Spay/ Neuter Community Liaison Pittsburgh’s shelters and rescues are currently overflowing with adoptable pets awaiting their forever homes. These organizations—including Animal Friends—are working around the clock to find homes for the pets in their care. What if we could stem the tide of pets entering shelters by providing pet owners with the vital resources they need to keep the animals they love? This is where Pets for Life comes in. In January 2014, Animal Friends partnered with the Humane Society of the United States to launch the Pittsburgh satellite of the nationally-acclaimed Pets for Life program. This program targets underserved neighborhoods by providing free, quality spay/neuter surgeries, pet supplies and basic veterinary services to empower pet owners to keep their pets in a loving home. Based on a community assessment, Homewood was selected as our first Pets for Life target neighborhood. Our
first community outreach event on May 3 was at the Galaxy Lounge and Entertainment Center. We were able to vaccinate 187 pets against rabies, distemper and schedule them for spaying/neutering and microchipping appointments, all free of charge. The ramifications of this program have been wonderful. Winnie, the owner of a 4-year-old cat named Callie, knew that Callie wasn’t well but couldn’t afford to take her to a vet. Callie was spayed through the Pets for Life program and during her surgery, our veterinarian removed a two-pound pyometra (infected uterus) from Callie’s tiny seven-pound frame. Callie’s life was truly saved by Winnie and the Pets for Life program.

In Greek mythology, Athena is the goddess of wisdom and courage. Our Athena was rescued by our Humane Investigations Department because of neglect. She was sick and timid, but she channeled her inner Greek goddess and is now a wonderful cat full of affection, head-butts and happiness. In other words, she’s ready for her forever home. They All Need Homes By Megan Schmitt, Admissions and Foster Care Coordinator They all need a home. We know that all of the animals that currently call Animal Friends home (as well as those in foster care and those at our satellite adoption centers), are looking for their forever homes – but why did they end up at Animal Friends? Where do our animals come from? The animals that come through the doors of the Caryl Gates Gluck Resource Center are here because of a variety of circumstances. They’ve been surrendered by their owners, found as strays, removed from cruel situations, transferred from other organizations or returned after being adopted from Animal Friends. Our Admissions Department receives
an overwhelming number of requests for placements with us, and because we don’t euthanize for space, we’re only able to admit new animals when our current residents find loving homes. Why do owners surrender their pets? We receive requests from owners to surrender their pets for many reasons. Often, owners seek placement for their pets because they feel that they can no longer provide the care or compassion required to keep the animals happy and healthy in their homes. Our Admissions Department works closely with these families and to find the best options for placement for their pets and to admit them to the shelter when space allows. The demand for admissions is incredible but we do the best we can to help each and every animal that comes to us in need. What does it mean when pets are “returned”? When pets are admitted to Animal Friends, they become Animal Friends animals for life. This means that we’ll welcome them back to the shelter for any reason, at any time. If an adopter can
no longer care for an Animal Friends pet, the adopter is encouraged to contact us to make arrangements to return the pet to return to us. What does it mean when pets are seized by Animal Friends’ Humane Investigations Department? A large number of animals available for adoption at Animal Friends have been rescued by our Humane Investigations Department from circumstances involving cruelty or neglect. Chief Humane Officers Kathy Hecker and Humane Office Rob Fredley work every day to remove animals from dangerous situations and to grant them safe haven here, ultimately giving them a chance at a life with a loving family. There are also a number of Animal Friends residents that have been transferred from other animal rescue organizations. Our Admissions Department receives a large number of requests from shelters in surrounding regions for placement of their animals in our shelter. We work side-byside with organizations such as the Greene County Humane Society, Orphans of the

Animal Friends is proud to host www.LostMyPet.org, a FREE resource to help lost dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals find their way back home.
Storm, Butler County Humane Society, Four Footed Friends, Indiana County Humane Society and many more. Additionally, when local animal control facilities such as Ferree Kennels and Secreet Animal Control pick up stray pets that aren’t claimed by their owners, they reach out to us for assistance with placing them into new homes. There is a lot of demand to place animals within the Animal Friends system. We do our very best to manage this demand and admit animals as we are able or provide other resources and support while they wait for space to open. The animals that look to us for admission come from a variety of sources, but in the end they are all the same—they’re homeless pets searching for their forever families. So please know, that when you adopt from Animal Friends, you’re really saving two lives: the life of the pet that you welcome into your home and the life of the pet that is able to take its place in our shelter.

Classes for Young Pet Lovers AF 122 Canine Courage For families whose child is afraid of dogs To assist families whose child is afraid of dogs, Animal Friends will provide a meeting space and a child-friendly therapy dog accompanied by the dog’s handler. The family will provide a therapist who will co-teach the sessions with Animal Friends’ Education Coordinator. Parents should contact their child’s pediatrician who may be able to recommend a therapist to work with the family. It will be the family’s financial responsibility to pay the therapist for his/her time. This class will teach you the life-saving skills and knowledge that will enable you to be there for your pets when they need you the most! Animal Friends’ Therapets Canine Certification Prep Class
This six week class will develop skills needed for you and your dog to conduct therapy dog visits to a variety of facilities including hospitals, nursing homes, residential treatment centers, hospices and more. Dogs should be people and dog friendly and have basic obedience training. We will build on those skills to develop a visiting team of dog and handler. Focus will be placed on team compatibility to ensure that dog and handler work well together. The class will include a visit with your dog to a local facility for a therapy visit. This class will prepare you and your dog for the Animal Friends’ Therapets Canine Certification test. An assessment interview is required prior to enrollment in this class. Companion animals enrich our lives in so many ways. This 5-year-old Boxer/German Shepherd mix has never had a bad day. Every morning she wakes with a wiggle and smile. She loves treats and toys, and seems to get along with other dogs. Josie loves to play and go for walks, but equally enjoys a nice snuggle on the couch, or lounging next to you on the floor.
LaDyBuG Live life to the fullest, no matter what setbacks you may have. That’s how our threelegged Ladybug sees things. But you’ll hardly notice her physical challenge—she keeps up with most dogs during free roam runs in our play yards. She fetches a ball, wiggles with excitement, and always has a silly grin on her adorable white-andpink face.
SParty Sparty is a volunteer and staff favorite. This 10-year-old Australian Cattle Dog/Pointer mix needs a kind, understanding home. He’s blind and is beginning to lose his hearing. He enjoys short walks, or just lounging around in the grass. Sometimes our volunteers sit in his kennel and read him stories. He’s a very special dog looking for that very special person. Sparty sends lots of love to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Robie, who sponsored him in memory of their Beardie, Bently.

StU Darius Darius is one of the friendliest dogs you’ll ever come across. He feels it’s his duty to kiss everyone he meets, and his big goofy smile is enough to light up the darkest days. This 6-year-old Pit Bull terrier is active and strong, so a family with children aged 16 and over is recommended. Help us spread the word about this great dog! Zack Are you afraid of thunder and other loud noises? Unfortunately, so is Zack. He could use a good friend to cuddle up with until the storm passes. And you’ll be in the very best company. Zack is a kind, sweethearted gentleman with soft brown eyes and a white muzzle that will melt your heart. And you should see the tricks he can do—sit, give paw, other paw—he’s a smart boy and a staff favorite! This handsome guy is a “people” dog—he loves humans more than his own kind. He can hardly contain his enthusiasm when he first meets someone—he greets everyone with a wiggly butt, sloppy licks and kisses. Otis Otis is something of a celebrity here at Animal Friends. Just about every morning you can see a volunteer walking this 95-pound Bloodhound mix who has a rather unique swagger in his step. And he’ll try to greet you as you get out of your car with his oversized floppy ears, wrinkly face and lovable smile. He’s truly nothin’ but a hound dawg! Otis says “Thanks!” to Mr. and Mrs. John Daley, who gave in memory of Toby Daley.
DOLLY Our Dolly is a real doll! This smiling, happy German Shepherd mix would make a wonderful family dog. Dolly would love to curl up with you on the couch or take a leisurely walk through the park. This book is very accessible for young readers (ages 5 and up). Alex describes several situations that many kids will identify with. The last page is a selection of useful information for parents and teachers about canine body language and expression. Max Talks to Me is a great book for the young pet lover’s library!

Kate and her parents just adopted two dogs from the shelter (Read ’Let’s get a Pup!’ Said Kate for that wonderful story). Their new puppy, Dave, is a bit rambunctious. The family calls a local trainer, but when “The Brigadier” shouts at Dave, and tells the family to use a chain collar on him, Kate and her parents have second thoughts. This book is a great story about being polite to dogs and people. Young readers might need help with some of the larger words, but the message is accessible to all ages. Dave, Kate, and their family really love their animals!

2. Bunny Accordions Our bunny accordion is a super enrichment tool. These toys afford the bunnies some extra exercise and easy clean-up for you! These accordionlike tunnels are bottomless (which make cleaning up after your bunny quick and easy) and encourage positive and healthy play for your bun.
Does your cat need to work off a few extra pounds? The Cat Crinkle Chute will do the trick. This pop-open chute is another great enrichment activity that will provide your cat with a source of entertainment but also doubles as a nice cozy place to hide or indulge in daily cat naps.

Our bandannas are handmade by one of our volunteers and are a fun way to give Fido a little flash. Our light-up items are not only great for keeping your pet safe, but are also conversation starters during those evening strolls around the neighborhood. Animal Friends’ on-site supply shop and boutique offers wonderful items for all your pets. Best of all, every purchase benefits our animals!

Happy Tails though I was hesitant, I agreed to go meet Violet with my mom at Animal Friends. Once I met her I knew we had to adopt her. Another reason why we wanted her was that she was very sick the first year of her life. We wanted to give her the best life possible moving forward. We adopted my other dog Bruno from Animal Friends 10 years ago who was sickly just like her. He is still going strong at 15! Violet and Bruno love each other so much.

My name is Connor Robinette. I am 14 years old and I am Violet’s new owner. We originally saw Violet in the Animal Friends appeal “270 Days of Compassion”. When my mom suggested we go meet her, I was a bit hesitant. I had just lost my dog Maya and was still very sad. Even

I am so lucky to have Violet. We spend so much time together. We swim every day. She loves to ride piggy back in the pool, float on the raft together and she jumps off the side after me. She loves to sit on my lap when I read to her. We also love to watch television together.
Violet makes me so happy and I feel so loved. She follows me everywhere and I feel like the most important person in the world to her. My family is so lucky to have Violet as she brought so much joy into our lives. Everyone at Animal Friends is just so touched by the incredible bond that has grown between Connor and Violet. When Violet started her journey with us here at Animal Friends as a very sick puppy, we weren’t sure she was going to survive. Over 270 days of excruciating treatments balanced with gentle care and enrichment by our staff and volunteers, she made it. To know that she is living large with Connor and his family is the richest gift we could have received. And, we are sure Violet would agree.
