Animal Friends is a non-profit organization serving the needs of pets and people since 1943. Our progressive programs have been nationally recognized and include pet rescue, shelter and adoption services, behavior classes, educational and therapeutic outreach and more. Most importantly, Animal Friends is leading the way towards ending pet overpopulation in western Pennsylvania through comprehensive, communitywide spay/neuter programming. Happy Tails:
Special Edition! By Kellie Roberts, Director of Placement Services We typically save our Happy Tail for last in each issue of the Petsburgh Press, but we are so thrilled to share Don and Louie’s story as the very first match through Animal Friends as the official Pittsburgh Chapter of Pets for Vets that we just couldn’t wait. With an enormous smile on his face, Retired Army Sergeant Donald Borland greeted Louie, a 2-year-old Jack Russell Terrier for the first time. Louie returned the sentiment with a wag of his tail, not knowing how much this moment meant to Don. It all started about seven months before their match day. Don, a lifelong dog lover, was looking online at some of the adoptable dogs at various animal rescues and shelters in our region when he came across the Pets for Vets Pittsburgh Chapter at Animal Friends. He immediately picked up the phone and took the first steps that would help bring him and his new best friend together. Pets for Vets is a national organization that supports veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury by matching them with companion animals that have been carefully selected for them based on their lifestyle, personality and specific needs. While Don, a decorated combat veteran of

Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom, would give Louie a loving home, Louie would give Don something just as important – the unconditional love and companionship only a pet can provide.

Louie is a sweet and outgoing little guy who loves just about everyone he meets. Don will tell you Louie is quite the ladies’ man! Once they met, it quickly became clear that Louie had found his family and Don had found the perfect sidekick.

The incredible bond that Don and Louie share is no coincidence. It isn’t the result of luck or chance either. It’s thanks to the skill, commitment and love of certified Pets for Vets trainer, Debi Meehan. Debi met Louie after he had been rescued from a high-kill shelter and placed into a foster home. After evaluating him, she knew that he would be a good match for the program and, more importantly for Don. Once Louie had been identified as a match for Don, he began a 6-week “boot camp” with Debi in her home where she taught him skills and behaviors personalized to Don’s needs.

Don presented Debi with a Military Challenge Coin as a thank you. Don was given the coin by his General following Iraqi Freedom – he had been holding onto it to give it to someone who deserved it. Not only did Don find a new companion in Louie with the help of Pets for Vets and Animal Friends, he made what he calls a lifelong friend in Debi. When we asked Don about the program and what he’d want to tell other veterans about it, his words were short, sweet and to the point, “simply awesome.”

Lucky Day By Kaley Kaczynski, Community Services Liaison On a busy Tuesday at the food bank, five minutes before closing, Christina rushed through the door and slumped into a chair across from Kelley, an Animal Friends volunteer. That morning, Christina had decided that if she could only accomplish one thing that day, it would be to get to the food bank so she could get dog food for Lucky – her beloved Pit Bull – just about all she had left. Christina was in her mid-40s and living out of a car in her son’s driveway. While Lucky spent his days in the house, he spent his nights sleeping in the car with Christina. As she lifted her head and took a deep breath, Christina began to tell Kelley why she was at the food bank. It was at that moment that Kelley knew it was no coincidence that they had been brought together that day. She told her how the Animal Friends for Life program could not only help provide food for Lucky, but it could offer vaccinations, neuter surgery and medication for the untreated skin condition he had been battling.

Kelley scheduled an appointment for Lucky to be neutered and helped Christina make arrangements to transport him to the appointment. When she pulled into the driveway that Christina called her home, she saw that the skin condition Christina had described was actually a severe infection. She brought Lucky to Animal Friends where he received all of the attention he needed and went home with antibiotics to help him with
When Christina walked into the food bank that day, she felt hopeless, alone and nearly to the point of giving up on the dog she loved more than anything in the world. Thanks to Animal Friends for Life and the dedicated staff at Animal Friends, she was now filled with gratitude, relief and, most importantly, hope for the future. This affectionate American Staffordshire Terrier loves to take brisk walks and chase after tennis balls. He’s a very social boy with polite manners to boot! Boone is a handsome boy who is a little shy at first but warms up very quickly. He’s got plenty of spunk and enjoys romping and playing. Regan is a sweet girl who loves to have fun and is sure to keep you and your family entertained around the clock. Both of these wonderful pups are crate-trained and housebroken and would make a great addition to a family with children 8 years or older.
SABer Saber has made incredible progress since arriving at Animal Friends. He has been through more hardships than any animal should have to go through and is working hard to learn to trust people. Saber would do best in a family with children 12 years or older who are patient and understanding because he’s still learning what it’s like to be a dog. RiNGo Ringo came to Animal Friends after being rescued from a hoarding situation. Before we met him, he had never had the opportunity to socialize with people or even to live indoors. This sweet boy is becoming more friendly and playful as the days go on!

AF 125 Dogs 101 For kids age 5+ and their grown-ups Children and dogs can be best buddies, with a relationship based on mutual respect and communication. Families with dogs or who are considering adopting a dog are encouraged to attend this class. Interact with a kid-friendly dog and learn how to tell when a dog is annoyed, happy, nervous, ready to play or ready to chase. Learn what to do when your dog jumps on you, what games are okay to play with dogs and when your dog needs privacy. Instructors: Dana Schultz and a kidfriendly Therapet dog. AF 218 Baby-Ready Pets! The excitement of preparing for the arrival of a baby should not be dampened by concerns about your pets’ reactions. With some planning, preparation and training, introducing your newest family member to your pet can be very successful and rewarding. The Baby-Ready Pets! Workshop will assist you in making the preparations for these introductions. Please note that this is a peopleonly class; no pets, please. Seating is limited, and advance RSVP is required. AF 219 Pet CPR and First Aid This class will teach you the life-saving skills and knowledge that will enable you to be there for your pets when they need you the most! Topics include, but
not limited to, rescue breathing, bleeding protocols, choking management, heat/ cold injuries, bites, stings, poisoning, seizures, fractures and limb injuries. Class size limited to 15 students to allow for

COMPANION DOG AND CAT TRAINING CLASSES FOR YOU AND YOUR PET Animal Friends is dedicated to providing people and their companion animals with the tools they need to develop lasting and successful relationships with one another and their community. All training is accomplished through kind, effective positive reinforcement techniques. You will learn how positive reinforcement is a way to build a relationship with your pet. Edgar Snyder and Associates sponsors scholarships for you and your dog to attend Kinderpuppy, Dog Manners or other obedience training classes held at Animal Friends. CANINE TRAINING Group dog training classes are best suited for those canines that are both people- and dog-friendly. Instructors: Animal Friends “Puppy Team” Christine Flint, Lori Caruso, Barb Grosch, CPDT-KA AF 301 Kinderpuppy For puppies 20 weeks of age or younger that have their 2nd DHPP booster and age-appropriate vaccinations including Rabies. Bordetella is strongly recommended for your pup’s best protection but not required. Small breed and/or shy puppies may attend until 24 weeks of age. All classes include puppy playtime and teach foundation cues - “sit,” “down,” “stand,” “touch.” In addition, each class has a specific theme. Exercises, behavior talks and homework relate to the theme of the class.
Puppies Learn Polite Manners Puppies learn “come,” pay attention to their people when asked, and we will share ideas to cope with puppy chewing and mouthing. Puppies Around the Household This class includes ideas for puppy management (crating, tethering) and housetraining tips. Puppies learn “sit to say please” and ways to discourage jumping are practiced. Puppies Out in the World This class presents socialization ideas and manners when interacting outdoors. This will include introduction to loose leash walking, and jumping prevention. Puppies Learn to Share This class focuses on resource guarding prevention. Puppies learn “drop it” and “leave it” and “wait for the food bowl.” We will discuss ideas to prevent possessive behavior of food and toys.

Basic training for the older puppy will include household manners, manners for interacting with new people and places and playtime to increase dog-dog social skills. AF 309 Fearful Fido Does your dog suffer from anxiety, fear, and/or phobias to the everyday things in the surrounding world? Is he/she especially sensitive to people, objects and/or other dogs, leaving you feeling powerless without knowing how to help? This seven week class will teach you the necessary techniques to begin a behavior modification program that will help your “fearful fido” become a “brave buddy” by building their confidence and giving you a better understanding of how to help your dog! Note that this class is not suitable for dogs who are leash reactive (barking, lunging, growling) at other dogs. Please contact us for other training options. Animal Friends’ Therapets Canine Certification Prep Class This six-week class will develop skills needed for you and your dog to conduct therapy dog visits to a variety of facilities including hospitals, nursing homes, residential treatment centers, hospices and more. Dogs should be people- and dog-friendly and have basic obedience training. We will build on those skills to develop a visiting team of dog and handler. Focus will be placed on team
compatibility to ensure that dog and handler work well together. The class will include a visit with your dog to a local facility for a therapy visit. This class will prepare you and your dog for the Animal Friends’ Therapets Canine Certification test. An assessment interview is required prior to enrollment in this class. Candlelight Remembrance Services
Companion animals enrich our lives in so many ways, and their loss is deeply felt. Join others for a candlelight remembrance and celebration ceremony to hear words of comfort and pay tribute to those wonderful animals who will be sorely missed. All are invited to bring pictures and remain afterwards for discussion. Children are welcome when accompanied by a parent/guardian. Ramona Ramona is a beautiful tortie with a lovely personality. She is FIV-positive, which simply means that she has a slightly weaker immune system than other cats. ButterBean Butterbean is just as unique as his unusual name implies – this handsome orange tabby has a larger-than-life personality. He was brought to our Low-Cost Spay/Neuter team after being found as a stray and stuck around to find a family to call his own. He is quite the chatty cat and loves to tell stories! Butterbean enjoys the company of other cats and absolutely constantly solicits human attention.

Mr. CoDy Mr. Cody is a handsome cat with a wonderful personality. He came to Animal Friends after his owner passed away and is looking for a home where he can lounge away the days. He has lived with other cats in the past and was very friendly with them. Mr. Cody is quite the ham and looks for attention every chance he gets. Lupin is a handsome longhaired orange tabby who has had a rough life so far. He was rescued by our Humane Investigations team from very poor living conditions and brought to Animal Friends. Lupin is a little shy and can be startled by unfamiliar situations, but gains confidence with a little positive attention. He likes being petted and enjoys the company of other cats. This good-looking guy would be a great fit for a home with a confident cat that can help to show him the ropes.
Helmut is an extremely friendly guy who lived most of his life with one family before finding his way to Animal Friends. He has spent his days lounging around while occasionally showing off his playful side. Moving forward with confidence, Helmet is ready to show off his great personality to a new family. Kismet This robust young lady was abandoned and brought to Animal Friends by a Good Samaritan. Kismet has a sweet, gentle personality and enjoys attention. This gorgeous longhaired Calico is looking for a calm, quiet home where she can learn to trust. Risa was abandoned but was rescued by our Humane Police Officers. She is a cautious cat who is still learning to trust new people. Once she is comfortable, she enjoys being brushed and playing with toys, especially shoelaces! ToM anD Jerry Tom and Jerry are a couple of fun-loving guys who were found together as strays and brought to Animal Friends. These littermates are best buds and will need to be adopted by the same family so they can stay together. Tom loves to play as much as he loves to pass the time snoozing on his favorite person’s lap. Jerry is an energetic cat who keeps everyone – including his brother Tom – on their toes with his antics. Boy Scout Pack 848, lemonade stand fundraisers from South Fayette and Daisy Troop 28818 enjoyed guided tours and therapy dog petting with Blue and Leo. Animal Friends’ Therapets teams visited various facilities and events throughout the community. Pine-Richland Middle School students, led by Ms. Pfeifer, raised over $2,500 for the animals at their 19th annual Paws in the Park fundraiser and enjoyed cart rides from Max the Malamute and a visit from
