SETTING FITNESS GOALS AND GETTING RESULTS

WHAT IS FITNESS? For many, it is defined as the combined acts of putting the body through physical stress in order to achieve a higher athletic performance level or simply obtain a buff looking body. Unfortunately, for some people it is a glorious memory from their days in high school that is seldom revisited.

ASK THE EXPERT Andrew J. Kaufman, MD, FACP

What can I do about my hair loss?

There are two FDA-approved medications available for treatment of androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern hair loss). The over-the-counter medication Rogaine® (minoxidil) acts as a hair growth stimulator. It is somewhat effective in enlarging the miniaturized follicles to improve the growth phase of the hair cycle. Propecia® (finasteride) is the first oral prescription for treating pattern hair loss in men by suppressing the hormone (DHT) that shrinks scalp hair follicles.

For the men and women with noticeable natural hair loss, there is another option available, Hair Restoration Surgery. With more than 250,000 hair replacement procedures performed in the United States each year, it continues to be a very popular cosmetic procedure. Hair restoration surgery is a safe, surgical procedure that removes a section of growing hair from the back of the head or donor site. These donor grafts, usually containing 1-4 hairs per graft, are then transplanted to the balding areas. The Center for Dermatology Care is excited to announce the addition of NeoGraft® to our offices in Thousand Oaks and Santa Barbara. NeoGraft® introduces a “state-of-the-art” solution for hair loss. This game changing technology automates the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method to give patients more natural looking results with minimal downtime, avoiding a linear scar on the back of the head and no sutures. With NeoGraft® the individual follicular units are removed from the donor scalp using an automated punch that measures approximately 1/25th of an inch in diameter. This avoids the use of scalpels to harvest a strip of donor tissue. Instead, each graft is removed individually from the donor scalp, and the wounds heal quickly, with less pain and no sutures or staples. Because the removal of donor grafts is less invasive than the traditional strip method, patients tend to recover quicker and usually return to work within a day or two. If you’re suffering from hair loss, see Dr. Kaufman or one of the other doctors at The Center for Dermatology Care. We can help determine the cause of your hair loss and tailor a treatment plan that works for you.

ASK THE EXPERT Talia Emery, M.D.

"I keep hearing people talk about freezing their fat away. Is that really possible?"

12 /

APRIL.MAY 2015 MALIBUCHRONICLE.COM

You’ve probably heard the hype by now about Coolsculpting, a technology that can “freeze” fat away. You may have seen it featured on “The Doctors,” “Good Morning America,” or “Nightline,” and on billboards throughout L.A.

It’s described as a simple, safe, noninvasive FDAapproved treatment to reduce unsightly fat bulges without downtime, needles, chemicals, or anesthesia. The press makes it sound great, but is it too good to be true? For the right patient, Coolsculpting can replace a more costly and uncomfortable liposuction procedure and, at the very least, help your dress drape more smoothly or your jeans fit more comfortably. The process used by CoolSculpting is called cryolipolysis, which involves chilling fat cells to the point that the water inside them crystallizes, rendering them inactive. Because these inactive fat cells look foreign to our body, they are metabolized and excreted by the body’s natural defenses. Studies have shown that patients typically experience a 20% to 25% reduction in the fat layer, resulting in visible changes to the body’s contours after one treatment. Some patients experience much greater reductions. Results are seen as early as 3 weeks and continue to improve over the course of 2 to 4 months posttreatment as the patient’s body continues to flush the damaged fat cells. Treatments can be repeated for additional slimming and contouring effects. Coolsculpting does not replace diet and exercise as the best practice for weight reduction. But it’s ideal for treating trouble areas—bra bulge, tummy pooch, love handles, inner and outer thighs—that just seem to stick around despite being at or near your ideal body weight. Essentially, if you can grab a handful (or two) of fat, Coolsculpting may be perfect for you. “Freezing” or “chilling the fat” has been extremely popular with our patients because of it’s safety, simplicity, ease of treatment, and undeniable, permanent results. ASK THE EXPERT Dr. Anthony Virella

At one point or another, almost everyone has “tweaked” their back or neck and feels how debilitating this type of injury can be. Luckily, most episodes of back and neck pain subside in a few days with some rest and over-the-counter medications.

What are some of the biggest myths about back and neck pain?

16 /

APRIL.MAY 2015 MALIBUCHRONICLE.COM

However, for those with chronic conditions that are unrelenting and do not subside, the condition may be more serious. Deciding on the proper treatment for chronic spinal conditions can be quite confusing as a variety of treatments exist. Sadly, many infomercials and “natural remedies” can mislead patients and provide them false hope. One of the biggest myths regarding spinal conditions is the use of “herbal remedies”. For someone with a condition such as a herniated disc, that spinal disc is impinging on a nerve root of the spine and causing the sharp radiating pain synonymous with spinal conditions. To date, no herb or plant derivative has the ability to reposition that spinal disc back into its proper position. Herbs and supplements are not able to make their way into the spinal disc and reduce the size of the disc, which is needed to relieve pain. Also, any herbal remedy should be backed by scientific evidence or studies. Despite the promises made by many of these remedies, reliable scientific study does not support these claims. Another myth is the use of TV infomercial products such as spinal decompression belts and other equipment. The utilization of spinal decompression techniques can be effective for those with mild spinal conditions but should be overseen by a qualified medical professional. While these products may offer some patients temporary relief, they do not correct the underlying problem that is causing pain. A far more effective protocol is physical therapy and core strengthening as these have a direct impact on posture and the stability of the spine. When these more conservative treatments have failed, it may be time to consult a spine specialist. Dr. Anthony Virella is a Board-Certified, Fellowship trained Neurological Spine Surgeon with advanced training in the management of complex spinal disorders. Dr. Virella is a nationally recognized specialist in the field of complex and Minimally Invasive Spine Sur-gery and has offices located in Westlake Village and Valencia. HILTON

SINCE THIS APRIL/MAY ISSUE HAS A FOCUS ON FAMILY FITNESS, I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE THE IDEAL TIME TO TALK WITH YOU ABOUT WHAT OUR PHYSICAL SYSTEMS ARE INGESTING (IN PLAINER TERMS....WHAT WE PUT INTO OUR MOUTHS) AND HOW IT AFFECTS OUR MEMORY.

Many people ask me if there are certain foods or vitamins that can enhance their memory power. Now, although there is no certain proof regarding the answer to that question, it is a fact that attention to the right diet and promoting healthy eating help toward weight control. And weight control is of major importance to your physical health and its effect on your memory. This is true because excessive weight increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and other conditions that affect the brain in a negative way. Having said that, I will share with you what many nutritionists tell us. Again, while there is no solid proof, according to these diet gurus the best foods for brainpower are:

broccoli, asparagus, avocados, lettuce, tuna, cod, mackerel and fresh fruit. Now some of the vitamin makers would have us believe we could ignore the real thing, just store up on their products, and pop their pills all the way to copping a Pulitzer. But the scientific researchers tell us not to overemphasize those costly nutritional supplements at the expense of the real thing, which is a well balanced diet. So eating healthy, vitamin-laden foods sounds like a plan to me. It sure couldn’t hurt. But whether or not those socalled brain-boosting diets actually maturate your memory, remains a whistle in the wind. So ingest them with a grain of salt. (Make it low sodium.) Let’s Give It A Try: n 1. Start with breakfast. The

brain needs the glucose for fuel. Include high protein and fiber and lots of B vitamins. Breakfast might include nuts, beans, dairy products, whole grains, and the like. Be sure to slurp up some OJ for more folate and vitamin C. n 2. Despite what some may

say, eggs for lunch would work because they are rich in choline. Your body uses choline to produce acetycholine, a key neurotransmitter in memory formation.

“...YOU CAN GET ANTIOXIDANTS FROM VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS but most researchers warn that getting these chemicals from food is far more effective and a lot safer.”

AS AN EXAMPLE:

If you’re throwing a party for your visiting mom your list might include oysters, caviar, Dom Perignon, shrimp, Swedish meatballs, and peppers. (You really love your mom.) And your acrostic might be “Please Mother Do Come Over Soon.” Please - Peppers Mother - Meatballs Do - Dom Perignon Come - Caviar Over - Oysters Soon - Shrimp

Add a leafy green salad to that for your vitamin E. Load it with fruits and vegetables. These antioxidants will lower the boom on those pesky free radicals. Yes I know you can get antioxidants from vitamin supplements but most researchers warn that getting these chemicals from food is far more effective and a lot safer. Dessert at lunch could be yogurt. Yogurt contains amino acids, said to improve alertness. n 3. It’s fish for dinner, well oiled, so you

can get your omega-3 fatty acids. And how about a healthy scoop of betacarotine on the side (carrots to the uninitiated). Lay those carrots alongside some of

your very favorite broccoli (OK, make it asparagus) for a bit more B. Now don’t go topping it off with an absolutely phantasmagoric slice of hot fudge cake. Any lab rat will tell you that berries are better----at least for their memories. A Memory Tip For Your Marketing Create an acronym (a word formed from the initial letters of each item) or an acrostic (a sentence created using words that start with the initial letter of each item) to make a mnemonic (memory) list of the things you want to buy.

If you’re stopping at the drugstore for some personals before the party, Hair conditioner, Air freshener, Nasal spray and Dental floss, line the items up this way: Hair conditioner Air freshener Nasal spray Dental floss Then when you leave the drugstore, all the things you need will be right in your HAND!

What do veterinarians look for during an annual Body: check up for your dog or cat?

We check your pet’s muscle tone and feel for lumps and enlarged lymph nodes. Enlarged lymph nodes can be a sign of infection or disease. Your pet enjoys a nice rubdown while we check their body.

Ears:

We look for signs of infections in the ear; ear mites, ear polyps, and possible foreign bodies like foxtails. We want your pet to be comfortable, healthy, and keep their great sense of hearing.

Heart and Lungs:

Like your doctor, veterinarians use a stethoscope to listen to your pet’s heart and lungs. We listen for heart murmurs, irregular heartbeats, and to make sure the lungs are clear.

Eyes:

We check for signs of many issues relating to the eye including glaucoma, high blood pressure, jaundice, and possible infections.

Samples:

A stool sample is requested to check for intestinal parasites. Blood work and a urinalysis may also be suggested to confirm that your pet is healthy and parasite free.

Teeth:

Studies show that 60% to 80% of pets over the age of 3 years have some level of periodontal disease and need immediate dental treatment. We check for bad breath, tartar, inflammation, and infection. Dental disease can lead to and cause more serious infections throughout your pet’s body. Taking care of your pet’s teeth not only gives them better breath but can help them live a healthier life.

Under the Tail:

We check your pets for tapeworms, tumors, and anal gland issues.

Abdomen:

We check for tumors, enlarged organs, signs of pain, and other abnormalities.

Skin and Coat:

We look at your pet’s skin and their coat to check for skin infections, lumps, and bumps. We also check for fleas, ticks, and mites. Fleas and ticks are a year-round concern in Southern California due to the warmer weather throughout the year. Prevention is the best way to avoid year-round flea and tick issues.

Joints and Spine:

We check your pet’s joints and spine for tenderness and pain. These can be a sign of injury, overuse, or age. As your pets age, their joints may become stiff and arthritic just like people.

Why does my pet need an annual exam?

Questions for your veterinarian for DOG owners:

The best way to keep your pet healthy is with a yearly exam. Prevention is a key part of keeping your pet in good health. If you bring in your pet regularly, we can spot problems in the early stages. When the issue is discovered early it is generally a simpler fix and is much more financially manageable. Your pet should see a veterinarian at least once a year. Remember your pet ages at a faster rate than you do. Missing one annual exam is like missing a checkup with your doctor for over 5 years. Once your pet reaches the mature and senior age (7+ years), we recommend semi-annual wellness exams to better monitor your pet’s health and the aging process.

Puppies (0 to 12 months)

I don’t see fleas on my pet, why do I need flea prevention? In Southern California, fleas and ticks are a year-round problem for pets due to warm weather. We see more flea related cases in the spring and summer but it is something we see all year long. Using a monthly flea preventative like Nexgard will help your pet stay flea free all year long. Fleas not only annoy your pet by causing them to itch, but they can also cause serious health complications. Fleas can cause your pet to develop skin allergies or they can infest your pet with tapeworms. Ticks also carry diseases that can be passed on to your pet. Why wait for it to be a problem when the monthly prevention is so easy?

ASK THE EXPERT Marc Kerner, MD, FACS

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep related problems affect many Americans. The most commonly known disorder, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects at least 40 million people in the United States. It is characterized by snoring, holding your breath during sleep and cessation of airflow into the lungs for greater than 10 seconds. Most people experience daytime fatigue, falling asleep while driving or watching television, and morning headaches. One never feels truly rested. Many but not all people with OSA are overweight. WHY IS IT DANGEROUS? If undiagnosed and untreated there is a 5-fold increase in automobile accidents in those affected with the condition. In addition, people with sleep apnea have an increased incidence of cardiac problems such as irregular heartbeats, hypertension or high blood pressure, and increased risk of stroke The irregular heartbeat can contribute to sudden death especially during sleep or in the early morning hours. DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT? To make the definitive diagnosis, we put people through an overnight sleep test, which quantifies the number of obstructive events that occur per hour. The severity of the apneas correlates with an increased risk of those medical complications such as hypertension. In addition to weight loss, there are a number of treatment options, which include CPAP, which is a mask that is placed over the nose during sleep. Think of it as a reverse vacuum cleaner. The device pumps air into the upper airway, which overcomes the resistance of the tissues of the nose, palate and tongue, thus overcoming the apnea and obstruction. Additional treatment options are available for those that cannot tolerate CPAP. These include oral appliances, which thrust the tongue forward during sleep, and a number of new procedures for upper airway corrective surgery. SETTING FITNESS GOALS AND GETTING RESULTS

Chelsea Thompson

Doug Machado training Michael Fuller

Among my favorite aspects of living here in Malibu is the collective "healthy" attitude that I have experienced and observed. Since moving to Malibu in 2010, I have spent several years working in a gym, teaching mixed fitness classes and doing individual personal training. I constantly push myself. I am always motivated when I see people work hard and reward themselves. Since a healthy body usually holds a healthy mind and a positive mindset, I believe everyone engaging in healthy eating and an active lifestyle would ultimately lead our planet towards housing happy and more prosperous communities. About 4 years ago I dropped the word "diet" from my vocabulary and replaced it with lifestyle. I believe that we can achieve our goals with a deeply ingrained interest in daily improvement and sacrifice. Eventually sacrifice becomes easy and usually leads to inspiring others through example. I encourage you to challenge yourself this spring and build a better you.

It is important to avoid biting off more than you can chew! Let's be real, no one really lasts on a drastic lifestyle change that is inconvenient and difficult. Start this awesome summer out right! Here is my challenge: 1. Set a small, yet attainable goal with a partner that you can achieve in 4 weeks. 2. Workout with your partner and push each other. 3. Measure your results at the end of each week but stay away from the scale until then! Nick and Joey Cimorelli

ASK THE EXPERT Dr. Saj Jivraj

Is it really possible to get a new set of beautiful teeth in just one day?

Yes, it is! Previously, implants to restore a full set of teeth with six or more implants would take several months and usually involve bone grafts. Patients would be without teeth or with poorfitting dentures for more than a year. Today, the All-on-Four™ system uses the fewest implants and avoids invasive bone graft surgery. Four implants (two placed at an angle) take full advantage of your existing bone structure to anchor permanent teeth. Now, you can leave the same day with beautiful, permanent teeth! Most people wonder how teeth on implants can be put on the same day? Think of it like this: If you fractured your leg and went to a hospital, the doctors would put your in a cast. The purpose of that cast would be to immobilize the bone fragments so that they could heal. Teeth on implants-the-same-day work exactly that way. The teeth serve as a cast for the implants so the implants don’t move and are allowed to heal. The All-on-Four™ procedure typically involves only two to four visits for consultation. Your Prosthodontist and Surgeon will gather information (using CAT scans, X-rays, impressions and photos) to design the best treatment plan. After consultation, your new teeth are fitted and adjusted—all in a single session. Advantages of this procedure are: • No invasive grafting… • People who have a fear of losing their teeth and wearing a denture never have to experience removable teeth… • Procedure is done the same day… • You walk in that morning with no teeth or failing teeth and walk out that afternoon with fixed permanent teeth… • Less cost… • Shorter treatment time. At Anacapa Dental we are Specialists in Implant Dentistry. We are Prosthodontists, true specialists in cosmetic and implant dentistry. We have performed the procedure for the last 14 years. We teach this procedure to dentists nationally and internationally. We provide a 10 year warranty; this is how confident we are that this will work for you. We will take very good care of you and your beautiful new smile.

MOTHER'S DAY By Allegreta Blau

Remember

Mama "I Remember Mama" is an old wonderful movie starring Irene Dunne as the perfect mother. She had four kids, a husband and a lodger, all living together in a tiny apartment. They were very poor. Mama always knew and did best. She adored and worked hard for her children. They turned to her for love, guidance and good food, and she was always there for them. My mother was another kind of mother altogether.

When I started to work at the age of eighteen and had my own money, I bought wonderful Mother's Day gifts; a lovely slip, a bottle of perfume - she liked Evening in Paris - a nice sweater. That’s when Mom started to get sick and I knew that she wouldn't be celebrating many Mother's Days. My mother was 52 when she died - I was just 22. Those last years were very hard. She had cancer and suffered a lot. When she died I was despondent, and I realized later, very angry. How could she do this to me? How could she leave me just when we could finally be friends? And how could she leave me to live at home and take care of my father? The guilt that accompanied these feelings was enormous. Before I turned five years old my mother gave me piano lessons. My father liked to tell the story that even before they had a regular bed, my mother insisted that they

get a piano. She put my little fingers on the piano and taught me to play the C scale - just five notes. I loved it immediately and continue to play to this day. My mother knew and loved art, music, literature, and the theater. I was seven years old when she took me on the Long Island Railroad into Manhattan to see the Chagall windows at MOMA. This was the first time they were in the United States. They were eventually given a permanent home at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center where I go to see them every year. They still dazzle. I remember Mama as elegant and cultured. She owned only ten articles of clothing and purchased name brands on sale once a year. She didn't have much money to spend; yet she always looked perfect and was admired for her good taste. My mother was European and came to this country after marrying my father in Paris. She was fearful and insecure in America. It was difficult for her to adjust to a new way of life. Once I became a teenager and wanted to spread my wings, I recognized that my mother wasn’t like the Mama in the movie. I could not turn to her for nurturance or help with the normal uncertainties of a young girl. Meaningful conversations between us were rare. Even though I still wish my mother had been warm and nurturing, I will always be grateful for the education she did give me - exposing me to art, music, books and theater - and for sharing her love and appreciation for the finer things in life.

ASK THE EXPERT Karen Quirk, M.D.

Why is vascular health as important as heart health to women?

Heart disease is the #1 killer of women in the United States. Like heart disease, peripheral arterial disease(PAD) is under-

recognized in women. The prevalence of PAD among women is actually equal to that of men when using the diagnostic ankle brachial index (ABI) test. 12 to 20% of Americans over age 65 suffer from PAD, but only one-third are symptomatic. Symptoms can include pain when walking that subsides at rest, leg cramps, pain at rest, numbness and skin discoloration, sores or other symptoms of skin breakdown. Women may be more likely than men to have PAD without experiencing symptoms. 50 to 90% of women with PAD are asymptomatic or have unrecognized symptoms, which could put them at greater risk of developing more serious vascular disease before it is diagnosed. Thus, vascular experts recommend early screening. Early recognition and treatment of PAD while asymptomatic may be life-saving for women. Treatment may include investigation of disease in the coronaries (heart disease), and carotids (stroke), as well as the legs. With early detection, smoking cessation, exercise, and medications, the progression of disease is effectively slowed. Also, early recognition of PAD enables easier and much less invasive treatment options that are often unavailable for advanced PAD. PAD is a common circulation problem in which the arteries that carry blood to the legs or arms become narrowed or clogged. This interferes with the normal flow of blood, sometimes causing pain, but often causing no symptoms at all. Women experiencing varicose veins and even spider veins should be checked by a vascular surgeon to rule out more serious underlying conditions. PAD Symptoms ● The most common symptom of PAD is called claudication, which is leg pain that occurs when walking or exercising and disappears when the person stops the activity. ● Other symptoms of PAD include: numbness and tingling in the lower legs and feet, coldness in the lower legs and feet, and ulcers or sores on the legs or feet that don't heal. Prevalence ● PAD is a disease of the arteries that affects 10 million Americans. ● PAD can happen to anyone, regardless of age, but it is most common in men and women over age 50. ● PAD affects 12-20% of Americans age 65 and older. The skilled surgeons at Coastal Vascular Center are experts in the diagnosis and successful treatment of all forms of vascular disease and PAD. Nutrition & Weight Loss Myths There’s a lot of talk about which foods to eat and avoid when the goal is weight loss. Here are six of the most common nutrition and weight loss myths. Written by ROBERT

MYTH

1 FRESH VEGETABLES AND FRUITS ARE MORE NUTRITIOUS THAN FROZEN FOODS.

FACT: Frozen fruits and vegetables are often healthier than fresh by the time you eat them. When flash frozen, vegetables retain most of their beneficial nutrients. So-called fresh vegetables were most likely picked days or weeks before becoming available in your store. For this reason, buy locally grown produce when possible.

FERGUSON

MYTH

3 ALL PACKAGED OR PROCESSED FOODS ARE BAD FOR YOU.

FACT: Just because a food comes in a package does not mean that it is highly processed or bad for you. Brown rice, whole-wheat bread, milk, low-fat yogurt, pre-sliced fruit–all of these healthful foods come in packages. Look at the ingredients list to judge the quality of the food. Remember, it’s all about the portion you eat when you’re snacking or making a fat burning meal.

MYTH

5 ALL PACKAGED FOODS ARE HIGH IN SODIUM.

FACT: Processed foods tend to be high in sodium because it helps preserve foods longer and increase flavor. However, consumer demand for low-sodium foods has led manufacturers to reduce the sodium in many of their products. Read nutrition labels to learn how much sodium a particular food contains. Chose snacks that have no more than 350 mg of sodium per serving. When buying frozen meals or soups, purchase products that don’t have more than 700 mg per serving.

MYTH

MYTH

6

YOU MUST GIVE UP YOUR FAVORITE FOODS IF YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT.

FACT: It’s unrealistic to think that you can cut out all the foods that you love. With the Diet Free Life System you learn to eat your favorite foods in the right combinations to keep your body in fat burning mode. You don’t have to give up your food favorites, just eat them in the right combinations and portions.

WHITE POTATOES ARE ‘SIMPLE’ CARBS THAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED.

MYTH

4 IF YOU DON’T EAT ENOUGH HEALTHY FOODS, TAKING A SUPPLEMENT WILL COVER YOUR BASES.

FACT: Poor nutrition supplemented with vitamins is still poor nutrition. Food remains your best source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals necessary for good health. There is no evidence that people who take supplements are healthier than those who don’t. Spend your time and money on tasty meals and snacks to meet your nutritional needs instead of supplements.

FACT: White potatoes are healthful, nutritious, rich in fiber and unprocessed. They are a great source of energy and nutrients, including vitamins C, B-6, folate and fiber (4 grams when you eat the skin). The key is to eat the right portion size.

Over the nearly 75 year history of the brand, the nameplate has established itself as one of the most respected in the world with a lineup built around SUVs like the Grand Cherokee and one of the most coveted SUVs in the world, the Wrangler. Now, the carmaker is offering a much smaller take on the nameplate, but it’s every bit Jeep just with a completely new spin. The new 2015 Renegade, which is available in four trims, is packed with a lot of the same features and 4x4 capabilities you’ll find in the Wrangler in a more compact package. The Renegade that will

appeal most to true off-road enthusiasts is the 4x4 Trail Rated Trailhawk Edition, which is the most capable in the lineup. However, there’s so much more to Jeep’s latest entry, namely its practicality as a Jeep geared for the city found more in the other models that include the Sport, Latitude and more premium Limited Renegade. The new compact SUV, priced between $18,000 to $26,000, is available in two variant options, a 2.4-liter or a 1.4-liter turbo engine, both scoring solid marks in one of the most important areas as a Jeep for the city, namely gas mileage.

WITH MORE THAN 70 AVAILABLE ADVANCED SAFETY AND SECURITY FEATURES, THE RENEGADE IS ALSO ONE OF THE MOST HIGH-TECH VEHICLES IN THE SEGMENT.

Featuring the world’s first nine-speed automatic transmission for the segment, the 2.4-liter engine has a fuel economy rating of 22 city and 31 highway, which also makes it ideal for weekend adventures. Even when it comes to elements like the overall ride and cargo space, the Renegade has been engineered with city dwellers in mind, far exceeding what you’d typically expect a compact SUV. With more than 70 available advanced safety and security features, the Renegade is also one of the most high-tech vehicles in the segment. In addition, it features Chrysler’s popular Uconnect Infotainment system, that when fitted in the Renegade, includes the

segment’s largest full-color configurable 7-inch gauge cluster with Wi-Fi hot-spot capability. Then, of course, there’s the Renegade’s size, which makes it perfect when needing to maneuver into those hard-to-park spots that can make those city commutes more of a hassle than anything else. The compact Jeep is also available with the segment’s first Forward Collision Warning system that uses radar and video sensors that can detect whether the Renegade is approaching another vehicle in its path too rapidly and warns or assists the driver in avoiding or mitigating the incident. Now, how’s that for city appeal?

BEAUTY BEAUTY TIPS

Mirror Mirror

JC Cadena

When exercising, the muscles we use become stronger and tighter. We rarely give thought to the fact that the muscles of the face are also being strengthened and tightened as we use them. There are an estimated 43 muscles found in the face. It is important to be aware and careful of how you use your facial muscles. Written by JC CADENA

JC@MalibuChronicle.com

With a few facial exercises you can create a tighter neck area or higher cheek muscles. But you can also create deeper wrinkles if you continue to tighten the muscles on your beautiful face. (If you are interested in Facial Exercises, there are several books available on the subject. One of my favorites is Facercise by Carole Maggio.) How do we avoid deeper lines? It is simple with one little tool, a MIRROR. Take a look at yourself in the mirror. Which are the wrinkles you are concerned about? Gently touch those areas on your face. Put a small mirror in your office, or kitchen, or wherever you spend a lot of time. When you are feeling stress, take a look at yourself in the mirror and look at your face. What expressions are you making? Are you frowning? Are you wrinkling your forehead, your nose? Whatever muscle you are tensing, immediately STOP! Slowly release that hold. Breathe out! Keep practicing until you don’t need the mirror so much. You will soon begin to feel the muscles on your face frowning or smiling. And choose to smile. Creating awareness is the key. “LOVE IS BEING IN HARMONY WITH ONE AND ALL. LOVE MEANS REALIZING YOUR IDENTITY WITH THE WORLD. YOUR ONENESS WITH BEINGS. To regard them as you would the different parts of your physical body. Every part of the body is dear to you. You look at it, look after it as your whole being. Be it your fingers or toes, your eyes or ears. So must you feel and realize the unity with your fellow-beings. Your oneness with the entire universe. That is love. A feeling that helps you maintain a perfect harmony with the world. You then live in peace and bliss. And if you lack the feeling of oneness, consider yourself separate and distinct from the rest, you would fall out of harmony with the world. You deprive yourself of this great emotion of love. And live a life of suffering and sorrow. That is the law. The concept of love has been totally distorted. What people call as love is far from true love. What the world understands as love is personal, preferential attachment. Attachment binds you. Makes you dependent upon the object or being of your attachment. Leads to your downfall. Little wonder people say, “You have fallen in love!” You must give up this clinging, selfish, personal, attachment which passes off as love. And develop the true form of love. A perfect human being is all-love. It has no motive, no desire, no personal attachment. It is not being a lover but is love itself. Everyone is drawn towards it. The whole world adores the child. You must learn to follow the example of the child. Give up your selfishness. Get rid of preferential relationship. Dissolve personal attachment. Rise above egocentric motive and desire. You thus merge with the fundamental element of love. You become the centre of attraction in the world. A magnetic personality. A true human being. Thereafter, goodness flows out of you to the rest of the world. Those who mean to serve the world would do well to develop such purity of love.”

Epigenetics And Exercise:

HOW GENES TAKE SHAPE TO CHANGE YOUR DNA ONE WORKOUT AT A TIME Written by MARINA

ROSE

ARE YOU READY FOR A DNA MAKEOVER THAT WILL HELP YOU GET SLIMMER, STRONGER AND HAPPIER?

It’s called Epigenetics, a cuttingedge science that studies how gene expression is influenced and changed by a host of factors—from diet, exercise, and mindfulness practices such as yoga and meditation – to environmental factors and lifestyle modifications. Although the DNA code that we’re born with may not change throughout our lifetime, new research shows that the way this code is expressed actually does— offering real opportunities to take charge of our health and wellbeing, prevent illnesses and increase longevity. We all know that exercise improves our health in many ways making us fitter, happier and boosting our immune system, but how exactly do our genes benefit from exercise? A recent study conducted by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm may have found the answer. Our DNA is complex and dynamic, with gene expression constantly turning on or off as a direct response to the myriad of biochemical signals that are received from the body. As genes are turned on, they express proteins that prompt physiological responses elsewhere in the

body. These Epigenetic changes occur through a process scientists call DNA Methylation. In DNA Methylation, newly formed methyl groups cling to the exterior of a gene like microscopic barnacles on a ship’s hull, making the gene more or less able to receive and respond to biochemical signals from the body, including signals sent while exercising or responding to changes in the environment and lifestyle. These changes in our genes can be positive or negative.

Exercising and eating a healthy diet is extremely supportive to positive gene expression, whereas being exposed to high levels of mental stress or environmental toxins is negative, adversely affecting our health and risk for disease. Using the latest technology in gene analysis, researchers at the Karolinska Institute found that even a small amount of regular daily exercise changes the fat storage levels of cells, which in turn affects epigenetic gene expression in many profound

t

and diverse ways—including changes in more than 5,000 sites on the genome — particularly in genes known to play a role in energy metabolism, insulin response, inflammation, and those linked to a heightened risk of developing obesity or diabetes. For those unlucky enough to inherit unwanted or unhealthy DNA patterns, emerging new health techniques based on Epigenetic discoveries like this could reset not just your workout, but the expression of your DNA as well. Yes, you can change your genetic destiny.

Leading scientists are shattering the false notion that we are stuck with the hand that the genetic cards have dealt us. In fact, we have a tremendous amount of control over how our genetic traits are expressed, and can change this expression at any time in our lives. Not only do exercise, a healthy diet, and mindful living improve our health and wellbeing, they also help us express our best genetic selves. Getting started is as easy as getting your DNA in shape one workout at a time.

LOCAL BILL ARMSTRONG

O

n Jan. 31, 2015, my family and I had the pleasure to join approximately 200 people celebrating Bill Armstrong’s 100th birthday. It was a perfect Malibu day. Bill was – as he always seems to be – enjoying the day, chatting with family and friends, telling stories, and joining in to sing “God Bless America” with partygoers. It was the contentment of a man whose life has been “well-lived.” Bill likes to say that his grandfather followed Abraham Lincoln from Kentucky to Illinois, where the family patriarch bought a coal mine. When Bill’s parents married, they moved to Seattle. When Bill was still a boy, his father died. His mother moved the family to Long Beach, California, where he still remembers seeing president-to-be, Herbert Hoover, campaigning. Bill was very proud that his father had been a veteran of the Spanish-American War and World War I. At this time there were quite a few Civil War veterans in Long Beach. Bill tells the story of how one day a vet approached him and told him that when the vet was about Bill’s age he met a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Bill stops for a moment, shakes his head, and says, “Just goes to show how young this nation is.” The family soon moved to Santa Monica, where Bill graduated from Lincoln Junior High School and Santa Monica High School. His first job was at the age of 15 as a box boy at Ralph’s at Third Street and Wilshire Boulevard. After attending Santa Monica City College, Bill went to the University

t

of Arizona. He then returned to Southern California to earn a bachelor of arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles. It was in a geology class at UCLA that Bill met the love of his life, Virginia. They married Dec. 31, 1938. Bill went to work at various aviation and research facilities in the days when Los Angeles was the aviation capital of the country. In 1950, Bill and Virginia bought a 1948 beach house with a 10-party phone line on Latigo Shore Drive. In those years, that was out in the country. The Armstrongs paid $13,500 for the beachfront cottage. At the time Bill wanted to buy the lot next door. He figures it would have gone for about $7,000, but he waited 15 years and then bought it for $70,000. Bill and Virginia had three children: Lea Anderson, Lani Netter,

and Alan Armstrong. At that time there was a stable on the property (and Bill insisted on mucking out the stalls for “exercise”), so the kids grew up riding horses on the beach and in the hills, swimming, surfing, bicycling, and making their own fun since Alan says there were only about 10 kids who lived in the area. Sometimes Bill would dive for their supper – lobster and abalone – wearing a wool sweater instead of a wet suit. According to Alan, their childhood was idyllic, like living in a Norman Rockwell painting. Bill still lives in that beach cottage, and Alan and his wife, Diana, live in the stunning wood and glass home next door to Bill. Unfortunately, Virginia passed on a few years ago at the age of 95. In-between the two homes is a red caboose the family restored and a familiar landmark overlooking the point at Latigo. In 1965, Virginia opened a private school, Carden Malibu School, on Las Flores Canyon Road. She ran the school for 35 years while Bill did the school's finances. Granddaughter Sunshine Armstrong revived the family business by opening Malibu Under the Oaks Preschool on the Armstrong property in March 2014. After family, Bill’s love is the classic luxury car, the Pierce-Arrow. He’s had many through the years, and still has a 1918 Pierce-Arrow

Touring Car and a 1924 PierceArrow Roundabout Roadster. If you attend the Malibu Fourth of July Parade, you have seen Bill and his Pierce-Arrow in the parade. Every year the family decorates the car and rides in the parade. Last year there was a slight change. Bill and his Pierce-Arrow were still in the parade, but three female World War II veterans, one of whom also was a United States Marine and had a tour in Iraq, were his honored guests. If you watched the parade in the late 80s and early 90s, you might also have seen Bill’s classic fire engine that was one of 10 purchased by the City of Los Angeles in 1921. Bill donated the rig to The Los Angeles County Fire Museum in 1998. Community is a big part of Bill’s life. He has been an active member of the Malibu Optimists Club for almost 35 years, and he still attends weekly meetings. In January, the club hosted a special breakfast program to celebrate this centenarian’s first century. Mark Ball presented Bill with a cake that featured an icing photo of a 1926 Pierce-Arrow, one of Bill’s favorite cars, and the words “100 Years of Optimism – Happy 100th Birthday, Bill!” The club made a $100 donation to the Optimist Youth Home in honor of Bill, and it established a $1,000 annual college scholarship in Bill’s name.

Phil Gajic tells a story that demonstrates how Bill gets things done when he’s a mind to. Bill was perturbed that the bus stop was moved down and across Pacific Coast Highway. One day a city planner came to deliver a talk at the club. A couple of weeks later, the bus stop was moved back to where it had been. Bill did not ride the bus, but he was worried about those who did. There is no end to the story of Bill Armstrong. He will live in smiles and actions of the many family members and friends whose lives he has influenced. Bill would brush these words away. I can hear him now telling me that he is busy planning his 101st party and asking me if I want to come. Bill, I wouldn’t miss it for the world. t

An Interview for Malibu Chronicle by KATHLEEN

ROSENBLATT

MARTIN DUNKERTON

Meet Martin Dunkerton, author and producer of Awaken Your Riches. BRITISH BORN MARTIN DUNKERTON IS CO-FOUNDER OF SERENDIPITY MOVIES + MEDIA AND CEO FOUNDER OF LOVEARTH.COM. He

has enjoyed over 20 years producing and directing films for the BBC and other major U.K. networks, shooting there and in the USA, France, Spain, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bahamas, and Greece.

Q~ Has filming had a personal transformation for you?

Q~ Your new TV shows “STAR SPIRIT SHOW” and “AWAKEN YOUR RICHES SHOW” are coming to the USA, when?

MD: “Well, it's magical how I partnered with Paul Duddridge, a fellow producer who has made shows for the BBC, ITV and HULU, to form a TV company called SERENDIPITY. With our combined movie experience, we imagined bringing celebrities/artists and enlightened millionaires and billionaires to a worldwide audience, asking them simple yet profound spiritual questions—so this is the basis of our “STAR SPIRIT SHOW” + “AWAKEN YOUR RICHES SHOW.” “Many artists see their success as the result of a Divine element in context of their colorful lives. One of our very first interviewees was Oprah’s producer, LeGrande Green, who flew in from the east coast and blew us away with his very personal spiritual revelations. Then we had legendary Shep Gordon, musician/artist Ben Lee, and Reverend Michael Beckwith from Agape International Spiritual Center, to millionaire Zhena Muzyka, the founder of Royal Gypsy Teas. “STAR SPIRIT SHOW” stars host Jen Jarosik, and will air on our new channel, LovEarth.com this summer and HULU very soon.”

MD: “Yes, I become more and more surrounded by inspired human beings like Paul. With mentors like Mark Victor Hansen, co-creator of “CHICKEN SOUP OF THE SOUL,” and T. Harv Eker, creator of “SECRETS OF THE MILLIONAIRE MIND,” I’ve been extremely fortunate.”

Q~ What is your next phase?

MD: “This summer, I am proudly launching LovEarth.com a kind of AMAZON, NETFLIX, FACEBOOK rolled into one. We will offer for sale 20,000 grocery products—a kind of Whole Foods online. 33% of proceeds will go to worthy causes and 33% to anyone worldwide. This is a way to bring artists and charities together to help thousands of non-profits in the USA and globally. I was inspired to create LovEarth.com during the making of our movie “AWAKEN YOUR RICHES,” based on the book, “THINK AND GROW RICH” by Napoleon Hill.”

Q~ As an ex-pat from the U.K., you had many years of success directing all over the world. When did your interest in film begin?

MD: “My passion for movies began at an early age, when, as a budding photo-journalist at college, I made my first Super 8 film. I showed it to the head of my department who had tears roll down her cheeks, and I decided there and then that I should pursue film. Miraculously, I got into the Royal College of Art as a writer/director and afterwards, I quickly directed TV for the U.K. Channel 4 and the BBC. I was nominated for the Royal Television Society prize for regional documentaries. My first ever BBC film called “BLACK DIAMONDS” was pivotal,

about the art that came out of the Aberfan mining disaster: the art the community created became their healing.”

Q~ How is it working in the movie capital—the ocean city with a mountain range running through it?

MD: “I love and am inspired by Malibu and Topanga. It’s incredible to be here. I just bought a property and am quickly expanding movie-wise with a $20m slate. It all converges and is destined for our LovEarth.com platform, including our major TV shows.”

Q~ Do you feel that your interaction with the dark moments and being sensitive to finer energies actually helped produce this roll that you're on?

MD: “Nuclear physicist Stephen Hawkins says that in every black hole there is an actual ray of light and if you simply follow it you’ll be led to a whole new universe. Everything happens in divine timing. Sometimes it’s a slow process – so I am delighted that we are now sky rocketing!”

Q~ How does this film fulfill your passion now?

MD: “I believe we are all potentially healers and capable of healing one other; we’re all empowered via one another’s stories. We used to tell magnificent stories around a fire. The shaman would gather the community. As film directors and producers, our job is still the same. The question for me though is, “How do I uplift an audience?” I’ve worked with pop stars, actors, award-winning authors, and even in the depths of Sri Lanka after the Tsunami. My message remains constant, “How is our spirit impacted by life... the tragic, the celebratory, the incredibleness and ecstasy of sheer living?”

MARTIN IS ALSO AUTHOR OF TWO BOOKS, “FROM A SHELTERED FLAME” (SIMON AND SCHUSTER), AND, “IS IT STILL RAINING IN ABERFAN?” (LOGASTON PRESS), AND HAS RE-PUBLISHED A MOVIE EDITION BOOK OF “THINK AND GROW RICH” WITH A DIVISION OF SIMON AND SCHUSTER, CALLED BEYOND WORDS. From its inception, this university-community partnership has generated valuable and stimulating exchanges. Our last session featured Cedars-Sinai Orthopedic Specialist and Talk Show Host Dr. Robert Klapper and Pepperdine’s own Holden MacRae. They peppered the audience with modern day insights about physical and nutritional health. The project got off to a flying start with internationally renowned Jazz guitarist and educator, Kenny Burrell. He teamed with Law Professor and flugelhornist Bernie James for an exploration of the oft-misunderstood world of improvised music. Making good on our promise to present a wide variety of subjects, we proceed with The Magic of Film, featuring veteran cinematographer Michael Ferris. Now in his 45th year as a cameraman, Mike has over 400 movies, films, television series, documentaries, and commercials to his credit. They include Scarface, Die Hard, A Woman Under the Influence, The Forsaken, Forrest Gump, Raise the Titanic, Hunt for Red October, Swat,

The North Hollywood CineFest

will run April 10-16, 2015 at the Laemmle NoHo 7 Theater in the heart of the world famous "NoHo Arts District." This international film festival will showcase nearly one hundred films over seven days with the corresponding red carpet event attended by celebrities, filmmakers and media from around the globe. Written by KATY DARLING

The red carpet will host celebrities such as Sean Astin, Mimi Rogers and Chris Mulkey, scheduled to attend the screening/Q&A for The Surface, as well as Edward Furlong and Vinnie Jones for Awaken, which also stars Daryl Hannah. Skeet Ulrich is anticipated to discuss his work as director on The Girl on the Roof. Event partners include Malibu Chronicle, Century West BMW, Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Krekorian, Nohoarts-district.com, the Greenhouse network of filmmakers and many more. This year a portion of all ticket sales from the festival will be donated to support Cervical & Breast Cancer awareness. The entertainment industry, civic leaders, and iconic local businesses will join together to show that "NoHo 's The Ladies". The festival has partnered with Every Woman Counts, a statewide program providing free cervical and breast cancer screening to under-served women. The California Health Collaborative and the Susan G. Komen Foundation are helping to spread the word and save lives of women in our community. Someone You Love: The HPV Epidemic, a moving documentary narrated by Vanessa Williams, will share the journey of five women as they battle cervical cancer. This film explores the many misconceptions regarding cervical cancer and who

may be at risk for these diseases. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in California, and 1 in 8 women in the US will be diagnosed at some point in their lives. The earlier breast cancer is detected, the higher the chances of survival. There are two main screening tests used: the clinical breast exam and mammogram. Most women should get a mammogram every 1 to 2 years starting at age 40. While cervical cancer is less common than breast cancer, it’s nearly 100% preventable. Cervical cancer is caused by a persistent Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection and, because of this, many women assume that screening is only necessary for women who have had many sexual partners, but this is not the case. HPV is a very common virus and most adults have been infected with HPV at some time, making it a risk for those who have had even one sexual partner. Starting at age 21, it’s recommended that women get a Pap test every 1 to 3 years. After the age of 30, there is the option to have a Pap test along with an HPV test to increase the screening interval up to 5 years. Additionally, young ladies between the ages of 9 and 26 can get the HPV vaccine, which protects against two types of HPV that cause most cases of cervical cancer.

MOST OF US KNOW HOW TO LOVE OTHERS but we are never encour-

We want to be number one on someone’s list.

Written by VEERA

Do we love ourselves enough to put ourselves first on our own list? Are you number one on your list? How can we expect anyone else to make us so important to put us on top of their list if we can’t do that for ourselves? Do you remember how many times you have put off doing things that you want to do for yourself in order to make sure others' needs are fulfilled before your own, or to make someone else happy? I remember even putting off going to the bathroom until I was finished taking care of all the mundane demands of my family, and I often did the same even at work. Who knew that I had to go to the bathroom? Only I did. I knew and yet denied myself the basic need to be able to say, I will take care of something else later, but now I need a break. I realize now, the world is not going to stop spinning if I take some time for me. So I do. I tell myself when I cannot take that call, I am still able to take care of things just fine. I just do them after I have taken care of myself. I’ve now learned to put my comfort, my needs, and what makes me happy, first on my list. I don’t have to wait for someone else to love me completely to know that someone loves me, because I love me. And I love me unconditionally so I feel completely loved. And the happiness that knowledge brings, invites and enables me to freely love others, too. Happiness awaits you if you..... Love yourself first!
