Debra K. Werner (nee Stalter), 62, of East Eden, New York died January 28, 2015. Debbie was an ambitious daughter and a wonderful sister. Growing up she and her siblings had great fun on “Big Mac Hill” sledding, ice skating and just being kids. Deb graduated from North Tonawanda Senior High School in June 1970 with business as her major. She aced the shorthand exam and went on to start her career as a legal secretary for the next 45 years. She worked for Richard Handle from 1970-1975, then Lou Siegel from 1976-2005. After 2005 she worked for Cheryl Green from 20062008. She has been working for Erie County Law from 2006 until her unexpected death. She was engaged to Joseph T. Werner in 1977 and the two got married in 1978. Together they purchased their one and only home in October 1979 in East Eden, NY. Their first son Joey was born on April 8, 1981 and Jeffrey followed on August 26, 1985. She was the loving daughter of Phyllis E. (late Charles) Stalter. She was the sister of Sherry Ganley, Robert Stalter and Janeen (Philip) Godfrey. She was an avid bowler with many years of league bowling. She was a pretty darn good bowler! She also enjoyed family vacations of fishing trips to Canada, along with boating on Lake Erie and NASCAR racing. She loved animals especially dogs as she and Joe had 2 Kemo, a beautiful Siberian Husky and Alex a golden Retriever. She also loved birds. She was known for always feeding her hummers and other birds daily out in her back yard. She loved people and peo-
ple loved her. She will be missed by many. A Celebration of Life will be held February 7, 2015 at 10:30AM in the Laing Funeral Home Inc. 2724 W. Church Street, Eden, NY 14057. Ward W. Weiser, Jr. of North Collins passed January 29, 2015 at age 74. Born October 7, 1940. Beloved husband of Mary (Loretto) Weiser; loving father of Scott (Catherine) Weiser, Matthew (Lorraine) Weiser and Maria Nyman; grandfather of Christopher, Zachery, Hannah, Jacob, Steven, Abbigale and Matthew Jr.; brother of Carol (Don) Dash, Harlan "Butch" (Judy) Weiser and the late Ruth Laplaca, Robert Weiser and Jean Bond; also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral Services were held at Wentland Funeral Home, 10634 Main St., North Collins, as well as a Mass of Christian Burial from Holy Spirit Church, North Collins. Ward was a Honorable Municipal Judge in North Collins for over 24 years. Also, he was a member of North Collins Jaycees, Eden- North Collins Rotary Club and the Collins Draft Horse, Ox & Pony Club. __________

Flags Along Main Street
The flags along Main Street and East Eden Rd. need to be replaced. Volunteers of Post 880 for the past 10 years have installed and taken down these flags. Financially, we maintain the flags, poles, brackets by replacing ones deemed unserviceable. They have reached their present state of Tribute, Memory and Love. They are faded, worn and tattered. 150 flags, poles and brackets need to be replaced. We are asking the businesses of Eden and East Eden, community organizations and residents to donate to this major project. The estimated cost for replacements is $50 per flag, pole (6 ft.) and bracket. To do a complete replacement, we would need 150 good quality sets. The cost would be $7500. A community effort to this project is neeeded in not only the purchasing of the sets, but installation of brackets. Donations can be sent to Eden American Legion Post 880, 2912 Legion Dr., Eden, NY 14057 Please mark flag donation. It would be nice to have this project completed before Memorial Day 2015. There are 2 new sets located at Main Street and Legion Drive.

Legislator Mills announces HEAP Outreach will be held Feb. 26 at Eden Town Hall
Erie County Legislator John Mills announces that a Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) Outreach will be held on Thursday, Feb. 26 at Eden Town Hall, 2795 East Church St., Eden. Interviews will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. All applicants will be interviewed. HEAP is a federally funded program to assist Erie County residents with their heating bills. The HEAP outreach will be administered by the Erie County Departments of Social Services and Senior Services and is open to all income eligible households. “If you are in need of help with the HEAP application process, I strongly recommend you attend this outreach and meet with a representative to ensure your application is submitted accurately,” said Legislator Mills. Applicants are requested to bring the following documentation to the outreach: •One (1) form of identification for all household members (birth certificates, license, Social Secu rity Card) •Proof of income received within the last 30 days for all household members (pay stubs, SS or pen sion award letters, proof of child support, rental income, unemployment benefits, worker’s comp., etc) •Current heat and electric bills If an applicant is missing information, they may be allowed to mail the information and complete the application process. SS. Peter & Paul School, located in Hamburg, recently celebrated Catholic Schools Week. One of the most popular events during the week is the LipSync contest. Saturday, January 31st, the Eden Teachers’ Association and the Boys & Girls Club of Eden teamed up for a night of fun for the family. There were themed games, crafts and snacks for the kids to enjoy for an hour and a half, and then a family movie was played. Local Eden High School students came out to support the event dressed as characters from the movie, and helped lead the audience in a sing-a-long. Fun was had by all, and the event was a great success. ___________

Dental care is just as important in our pets as it is for ourselves. Just think about it for a minute...what would be the condition of your teeth if you didn't brush your teeth daily. Even if you did brush, what if you didn't visit your dentist regularly, waiting years to schedule an appointment only when a problem arises? This is exactly what happens with out pets. Routine dental cleanings do more than just keep our pet's teeth healthy: they help to detect problems early on, rather than when they become a major concern. Studies show that they can help control diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease, or heart disease, because the body is not constantly fighting infection stemming from the mouth. Routine dental cleanings can help your pet retain its teeth longer than those who are left without care. Dogs have 42 teeth, while cats have 30 when they are adults. These teeth are made of the same materials as ours. Small breed dogs have an increased risk of periodontal disease compared to medium and large breeds. Cats can develop painful resorptive lesions on both the crown and roots. Our pets are rather stoic when it comes to pain, especially tooth pain. They can have broken teeth, gingivitis, or loose teeth, and even abscesses, but continue to eat and drink normally. A dental procedure in our pets is really not much different than the visit to our dentist, except the patient is placed under general anesthesia. The teeth are cleaned both above and below the gum line. X-rays of the roots should be taken to check for any underlying disease. The teeth should be checked for pockets, or spaces, between the teeth and the bone. Each tooth should be checked to make sure there are no abnormal spaces, and they are firmly in place. The soft tissues should all be examined to make sure there are no masses or ulcers present. Finally, the teeth should be polished to seal any small defects that would allow bacteria to easily attach. There are many different products available to help prevent tartar build up, but just like us, brushing is the best. It is important to discuss with your Veterinarian what is best for your pet. Doc Hall will be missed by all. He cared for our animals, large and small.
If you have lived in Eden and have had pets, you knew “Doc.” Doc was our veterinarian in town for 62 years. He also served for many years as Buffalo Raceway track veterinarian. Doc was a proud harness racing breeder and owner of standard bred horses. He was a member of the Western New York Harness Horsemen’s Association for 40 years. Dr. Richard J. VA’s Prestige Plummets How we view the Department of Veterans Affairs depends on which survey we read. Back in 2013, in a poll modeled after the American Customer Satisfaction Index, a majority of veterans approved of their care at the VA. Specifically, veterans rated their care at 84 for inpatient and 82 for outpatient, generally along the lines of civilian hospitals. Recently though, a general population poll done by think-tank organization Pew Research concluded that the VA is the third most unpopular U.S. government agency. While the ratings for most agencies have stayed generally the same over the years, the favorable opinion ratings for the VA plunged 16 per-
cent in one year. What happened between the two? Likely it was all the bad news: the disclosure of schedule rigging at VA medical centers for the purpose of increasing bonuses, with the focal point being Phoenix; the resignation of Eric Shinseki, probably the best secretary the VA has ever had; and allegations that the delays in treatment at Phoenix caused the deaths of 40 veterans. While it could be said that we’re comparing apples and oranges (veterans getting care versus the opinions of the general population), it should be noted that the ACSI veterans survey was not anonymous. Surveyors called veterans at their homes already having their
names, phone numbers and addresses as provided by the VA. The Pew survey was dialed randomly. A more recent survey of employee attitudes at the VA paints the most damaging picture of all. Employees voted the VA as the second-worst place to work out of 19 government agencies. Just one year before, the VA ranked as 13th out of 19. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Big Hero 6” (PG) -- This Disney animated feature takes us to the futuristic fictional metropolis of San Fransokyo, where a bunch of tech whizzes (and their inflatable robot) build themselves into superheros to battle a Kabuki-masked supervillain. The heart and soul of the supergroup is 14-year-old Hiro (voiced by Ryan Potter) and a doughy, adorable robot caregiver named Baymax (Scott Adsit). It hits all the notes you’d expect from a Disney super-adventure -- a kid for the kids to relate to, a goofy show-stealing sidekick, quirky supporting characters, vulnerable feelings and dazzling animated action sequences. While the characters are loosely adapted from a lesser level of the Marvel Comics world, this world fits in with genre demands while still bringing a refreshing energy to the screen. “Whiplash” (R) -- A gifted young jazz drummer gets pushed to his furthest edges by a merciless music teacher so sadistic and single-minded that you’ll be scared of him too. Andrew (Miles Teller) is a prodigy behind a drum kit, and he’s determined to reach the highest level at his musical conservatory. He catches the attention of the school’s most feared and respected teacher, Terrence (J.K. Simmons), who immediately starts with the mindgames, working Andrew to the bone and changing him to the core. The performances are

Trouble is, stardom and objectification aren’t all Noni was told they would be by her overbearing stage mom (Minnie Driver). When things seem darkest and Noni can’t take it anymore, she’s rescued by a hunky, virtuous cop named
Kaz (Nate Parker). Even when the plot wears thin, the performances and directing give it gravity it needs. “Horrible Bosses 2” (R) -- Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis are reunited as the three bumbling revenge-plotting pals from the pretty good 2011 prequel. The trio is trying to launch a small business -selling some silly invention -- when they get swindled by Bert Hanson (Christoph Waltz), a big businessman who said he could help them succeed. Our protagonists decide to kidnap Hanson’s playboy son (Chris Pine). Unfortunately, while the leads still have their comedy chemistry, a confused script strangles the humor and pushes things into a more predictable territory.

Hazmat also has a heavy vehicle repair shop specializing in, but not limited to, cargo tank trucks and trailers. Hazmat is currently searching for qualified Truck and Trailer Maintenance Mechanics for 1st and 2nd shifts in our Lackawanna headquarters. The Tractor/Trailer Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing and servicing all trucks and trailers in a safe, timely and cost efficient manner. All commercial motor vehicle equipment must be repaired and maintained in accordance with FMCSA requirements, manufacturer recommendations and company policies. Responsibilities include: • Perform preventative maintenance inspections on all assigned inbound equipment • Diagnose and repair/replace mechanical and electrical systems according to established service criteria • Understand troubleshooting procedures and failure analysis of all components • Lift and install heavy components of CMVs such as starters, clutches, brake drums, etc. • Maintain a clean and safe work environment that complies with OSHA standards The successful candidate will be knowledgeable in air systems, brakes, wiring, tires, A/C for tractors and trailers.
