Rivers of Chilean Fjords

Page 1

Explore Chile's last frontier.

Rivers that flow from the Andes Mountains to the Southern Fjords. Fish 6 - 8 remote rivers in a week, all with exceptional fishing. Resident and Sea-run Rainbows and Browns, and Silver Salmon.

Introduction Sunday to Saturday fishing cruise to rivers that only a few have ever seen. Navigating where the Andes Mountains meet with the South Pacific Ocean, we will take you to a place with outstanding trout fishing and beauty, "gin" clear waters, waterfalls, virgin temperate rain forests, and much more.

This is Chile's last frontier, now you can explore the rivers that flow from the Andes Mountains down into a vast calm inland sea off the southern coast of Chile. Most of these rivers have never been fished, and although some of them don’t even appear on the charts, they do hold pleasant surprises. You will also enjoy observing a rich sea life such as sea lions, penguins, forest and marine birds and the rare five-foot black dolphin of Chile. All this aboard a comfortable, safe and fully equipped 90 ft long, twin diesel engine motor yacht with steel hull, ample exterior decks, salon and dining areas all with great views to the outside, double passenger staterooms with private baths and showers. The crew of 5 uses separate rooms and bath areas. The yacht has changing & fishing equipment area in aft deck, and ample front and upper decks for wildlife observation.

Fly fishing

Fish more than half a dozen rivers in a week, all with exceptional fishing for both resident and sea-run wild Rainbows and Browns as well as Silver Salmon. The size of the fish on average is over 20 inches with clear opportunity to land Trophy Fish over 28 inches during the week. We will move into a fjord with the yacht and then motor to shore using the hard bottom inflatable tender boats. Wading our way upstream and then walking back down - some times following the riverbed, other times through the jungle. Fishing is very productive so we rarely have to travel far from the mouth of the river. For your safety, we are in radio contact with the boat and the rest of the group at all times. Although this is not an extreme adventure, if you choose to explore and go further upstream to unexplored areas, this certainly can be arranged

The area we are fishing has no access by road and is one of the most scenic places in Chile. With absolutely virgin waters and forests, this is truly a unique setting.

2024 Itinerary

Friday January 13: Depart the US on an overnight flight to Santiago, Chile.

Saturday January 14: Am arrival to Santiago Chile, connect the next available flight South to Balmaceda airport, this flight will take 2-3 hours depending if flight includes a stopover. Upon arrival in Balmaceda you will be met by one of our representatives outside the baggage claim area. After scenic two hour drive west to the base port in "Puerto Chacabuco" where you will spend the night at a great local hotel. Sunday January 15: Proceed to to embark the yacht at 9:30 am, here you will meet your host, guides and crew. While the yacht navigates towards our first fishing destination, we will discuss equipment and maps showing different rivers and fjords that we will visit during the week. The guides will describe the different fishing situations you will encounter. After getting settled, we will enjoy lunch. As we approach our first river, we get our gear ready for a session of great fishing. A few minutes by Zodiac will put us ashore then, walk a few yards up river to the first run or pool to begin our fishing adventure. After fishing, we return to the boat for Pisco Sours, wine or beer, then you will be invited by the Captain for a delicious dinner while we hear fresh fishing stories and the next day's plans. January 15-19: Monday to Friday: We’ll have an early breakfast while the boat navigates through the fjord, anchoring close to the mouth of the river. tender boats will take us to shore in a few minutes. The guides are able to contact the boat by radio in case we need some assistance or to bring us anything we might have we forgotten on board. Once on the river, a short walk upstream to our first pool or run and we begin our fishing adventure.

For the more adventuresome explorers a hike further up the valley is an attractive option. Fish are usually powerful and big, with the average weight ranging from 5 to 8 lbs. The largest trophy fish caught so far weighed 25 lbs, and as expected, quite a few of the largest fish have broken off. If you're looking to catch the biggest fish of your life in a wonderful setting, this is the place to be. Apart from fishing, the surroundings are truly magnificent - tall mountains coming out of the ocean covered with temperate rain forest almost to the snow line. The combination of ocean and forest offers great opportunities for birdwatching and nature photography. The area we are fishing has no access by road and is one of the most scenic places in Chile. With absolutely virgin waters and forests, this is truly a unique setting.

Saturday January 20: We return to the base port and after an early breakfast you disembark the boat around 9:30 am to board the vehicle for a two hour drive to the Balmaceda airport on time to board your flight to Santiago and international connection to the US or Europe. Sunday January 21: Arrive back to the US or Europe. A typical day’s fishing program flows as follows: One of the most exciting time is to wake up tucked away on a remote fjord looking out the porthole to see ocean, mountains and jungle and no trace of human habitation. Enjoy an early coffee on deck while you breathe fresh air and take in breathtaking views and listen to the birds. You realize how fortunate you are to be one of the few people to have ever been on this place. After an early breakfast, the Zodiacs will take you and your guide to shore. We will fish until around 2:00pm, if we decide to move the yacht to fish another river, then we either go back to the yacht for lunch and a "siesta" or, if we stay on the same river, we have a stream side lunch, so we can continue fishing until day's end when we will return to the yacht for a hot shower, cocktails, followed by a delicious dinner. During the week we will fish from 8 to 10 different rivers. Some of the rivers are longer, and you can walk upstream quite a distance. Other rivers are much shorter where we fish only a couple of hundred yards from the mouth. We will move the yacht as required by conditions so if the river is fishing well, we can always stay a bit longer. Flexibility is the name of the game when you have the option of moving your “lodge".
