I

t was second my season on the Essex Manor and with the first one being such a success I had learnt a hell of a lot and was sure that 2017 was going to be a good year too. The lake is famous for its big fish and there were a few in particular that I was itching to catch. It is heavily pressured for such a small lake and has seen some of the biggest baiting campaigns in carp fishing. So much good quality bait has been introduced over the years, and in vast amounts, that looking for an edge was going to be tricky but achievable. Being an irrigation pond, it has gradual sloped margins, all pretty much reed lined offering obvious holding areas for the carp. The marginal shelf goes down to deep water with a pretty barren bottom. The carp would often show in the deep water, but could sometimes prove tricky to catch.

Signature pop-ups. It ended up being a great session, catching a few fish, including my first big fish of the year, one known as Matt’s Mirror at over 39lb. I was back the following week and the fish seemed to be spending a lot of time in the same area that I had caught from the previous week. The lake was unusually quiet, but the shows that morning were non-existent. In the darkness I thought that I heard one fish and could just make out the odd ripple coming to the bank. With nothing else to go on it was as good a place to start as any. I clipped the rods up to some spots that I had marked down and the conditions were bang on. The wind trickled in and the thick clouds came over and held the heat in, it felt incredibly warm, and as I sat sipping on my third coffee of the morning, the middle rod was away. By the time I

It is a deep pit, which takes a little while to wake up. It was around May time that I got back into it and picked up the odd fish during overnighters. I was fishing the shallow areas, going in with single hookbaits and trying to be as quiet as I could. They weren’t up for eating bait yet, so single bright hookbaits would be enough in areas that they were clearly visiting. A few weeks had passed, and I had managed to get a two-night session in. I fished a swim known as the Garden after doing four laps in the dark really early in the morning. The fish were showing like mad in front of the Garden and I dropped my bucket in the swim behind a friend, who was off that morning. It was the nature of the lake, it is a circuit water and, as much as I don’t like doing it, if the fish are there and the angler is packing up, you have to move in or someone else will. When Chris left I simply flicked out a few naked Chod rigs, all with small, bright

got to the rod the line was peeling off the tight clutch. A couple of lads came round to give me a hand and I played the fish for what felt like forever. I knew it was a good fish and on the first sighting we caught a glimpse of two big scales. We all thought it was a fish known as George’s, which is the one everyone wants. Eventually I slipped the net under a huge-framed mirror, which wasn’t George’s but another one of the big girls called Joe’s. It was a fish that doesn’t get caught a lot and one that I dearly wanted to catch. The lads gave me a hand and we weighed her in at 46lb on the nose, a right result and one of the lake’s biggies under my belt for the season. I seemed to be getting most of the bites on the pink Signatures and the small orange Peach and Pepper. I kept it under wraps as much as I could, as I knew a lot of the lads would be using the whites and yellows. The morning fizzled out with little going on and nothing happened during the night either.

BILL COTTAM

ALLEGEDLY This month Bill reveals his thoughts on serial killers, and how to find them. Wishes Chilly a speedy recovery, and gives us the low-down on his latest awe-inspiring trips to France.

n truth, I live a remarkably mundane and uneventful life; I invariably work on the laptop until around ten in the evening and then dive in the shower and waddle (what a player he was!) down to the local hostelry for a bottle or three of nonalcoholic, low sugar, Becks Blue sherbets. Generally speaking I get home just before midnight and, having never been one for retiring particularly early, I put the TV on. My usual channel of choice at that time of the evening is Quest Red, a channel that tends to centre around American crime; murder, death and killing at that time of the day. They’ve all been on there, bank robbers, insurance fraudsters, kidnappers, rapists, fellas who keep sex slaves chained up for years on end and, most fascinating of all in my opinion, raving mad psychotic serial killers! Now serial killers come in all sorts, shapes and sizes and from a veritable myriad of differing backgrounds; some are wealthy, some are poor, some are extremely well educated and intelligent and hold down enormously responsible jobs and some are as thick as the proverbial pudding. They all have one thing in common though; a heinous propensity to kill people, very often just for the sake of doing so. My favourite shows are The FBI Files and Couples Who Kill, both of which show the FBI’s compiling of evidence and their tireless, no expense spared, pursuit of the bad guys and gals. Sometimes it is obvious to the viewer at a very early stage in the show, who the perpetrator is and sometimes it comes as a big surprise. The FBI boys are very experienced of course and their gut feeling at the start of the investigation is very often pretty much spot on. Patterns do emerge though, as many serial killers do have a habit of being of a type and in many cases, they are remarkably stereotypical. Very often the FBI’s first contact with the suspected serial killer is by way of a routine vehicle stop, and certain things do undoubtedly raise suspicions and flag up the possibility that they might indeed have their man. Serial killers do tend to be unshaven, they often stink like hyenas and drive midpriced, slightly grubby looking vans that look like they have done a spot of offroading; the aforementioned vans very often have a makeshift bed, or something that loosely resembles a bed, in the back, along with a sleeping bag. Lord only know what the point of the bed is, but Carpworld de ce m b e r 2 01 7

I JAMES SALMONS

big pit

In the second part of his story James reveals how his run of good form continued, resulting in him landing one of the originals from this large and often tricky venue.

was back down just a few days later on the Friday after work. I was hoping to try and get back in the same area that I had the common from but the fish dictated otherwise as I walked into a swim which was heaving with fish out in front! The forecast wind hadn’t picked up by that point and the fish were milling around everywhere on the surface so I quickly went about grabbing the floater rod from the car, and that’s where it all went wrong! As I uncovered the rod from its sleeve I realised I’d grabbed my stalking rod instead of my floater setup! I could just imagine the floater rod standing up nicely in its sleeve in my cubby hole at home as I cursed myself for being an idiot! As I only had fluorocarbon on the spool I thought the game was over until Kasie told me he had a spare reel in his van with mono on. I grabbed it from him and started setting up the rod. Just as I went to put on a hooklink the wind picked up strongly, blowing into me and the chance was gone. Needless to say, that’s the last time I left my floater kit at home, even if it was an accident! Back in the swim the conditions looked really promising so I went about finding some areas. A few fish had actually started to show so I was casting well over the back of them and winding back to try and find spots amongst them. I found a few areas but they were all pretty blatant. As I didn’t want to disturb the swim further I went for these for the coming night as the rest of the swim was extremely weedy. The wind got stronger through the evening and into the night and, as a result, I didn’t sleep too well. Every now and again I could hear the sound of what I thought would be fish rolling. I was up before first light with a coffee awaiting the light to improve and by this point the wind had dropped a little. As dawn broke it was immediately clear that the fish were stacked up in front of me as I watched them showing heavily. I rubbed my hands together as a few of them were over the spots. After half an hour of watching I got the camera and tripod out and filmed some of the shows. My mate Paul came around shortly after and we stood and watched the fish continue to make their whereabouts known. I had a coot pick up my close-in rod around 7.00 a.m. and the action started to subside shortly after. I couldn’t believe I’d not had a bite! I had noticed that the fish seem to favour a particular area, so when the activity died off I got the leading rod and investigated it. Carpworld de ce m b e r 2 01 7 119
