The Remedy Experience... Remedy is an interactive note-taking tool and resource for today’s art therapist. Even those not drawn to technology initially, are finding themselves immersed in it more and more with new advancements in tablet computers (i.e. Apple’s iPad, Samsung’s Galaxy, Lenovo’s ThinkPad) and user friendly apps that are simple to learn. page

Through research and design studies this iPad app concept illustrates a few ways that technology could benefit the art therapy world. Here are some key features: 1. Direct annotation (keyboard or speech to text) on a digital image of patients artwork 2. Annotation on a video or audio time line, for those tech savvy patients! 3. PDF export of notes, images, speech to text, etc all in an organized document for archiving. 4. Time line view of a patient’s artwork and notes over treatment period. 5. Projection of individual artwork or full time line view.
Creative Brief Remedy iPad app for BFA thesis Spring 2012 Prepared by Angela van Broekhuizen Overview and background of the project: Implementing intuitive UI design in an iPad application will improve evaluation process and detailed analysis for today’s art therapist. Current technology does not allow for consolidated evaluation of patient artwork and progress over time. Therefore,an application that can collect all patient information and allow detailed annotation will improve the therapist’s overall process and in turn accelerate the healing progress of the patient. At the beginning of my research process I had an initial assumption that art therapists would be less inclined to use technology but only one in my seven interviewed had little knowledge or experience with computer programs and more than half were owners of an Apple product. Objective: To research the needs of art therapists in various roles, traditional, education, international, progressive, etc. Information collected acts as guidance for iPad application development and will be used to create a prototype that can be shown at the BFA Thesis show Spring 2012. Target Audience: Art therapists Deliverables: Thesis paper, Subject Matter Expert Report, Mentor Report, Price List, Gantt Chart, Reading List, Promotional Materials, Final prototype and progress imagery. This prototype helped with initial testing with art therapists. I would hand the paper “screens” to them as they touched different sections of the paper to study the interactions. Then I imported the scanned files to a prototype engine called “FieldTestApp” which allowed me to run the protype with hotspots on my iPad. This is the same program that runs my current prototype.

Final Prototype Design After testing and user surveys I modified the design to represent a brand that would appeal better to my primary target audience of art therapists. page

With feedback about the distracting wood background and feedback about user’s favorite brands I adapted my design to use calm, muted colors so not to distract from patient’s artwork. Based on the art therapist background in fine arts and psychology I have chosen an artsy logotype font, Natural Log, and easy to read body text font that lends itself to creativity, Waukegan.
