2015 Mixed use project

P SLIP S A CE The Hub (E 149 ST. and Third Ave) in the Bronx, has many comically dense blocks lacking in residential and public space. Our strategy is composed of two pieces, both to slip in a variety of spaces. One part is the newly cut Public space that inserts a diverse mix of commercial, food, and recreation spaces to give the shopping traffic a space to relax. By slipping back and forward the store fronts, there are moments of expansion and contract as they move through the space. By slipping up and down vertically, slips allow peaks into the space below ground. These exposed and hidden spaces allow for people to explore and occupy the public space. On top of the public space is the housing splits that shift to create vertical and horizontal expantion and contraction. All the units start of as studios, than expand with life needs and contract back to a studio when they are no longer needed. These remanufactured units are flexible living spaces that unite configurations to adapt to the life cycle of the user. With the housing complex right above the intimate space, the tenants are the first members that can help create, grow and maintain this community space.
