Newsletter No. 5 - 2015 Revolution

The Tesla of the sea propulsed by Van Voorden Since 2010 the development started for a sustainable fishing vessel that would revolutionize the fleet. Last month, the ship was finally finished; the MDV 1 Immanuel was brought into service with high expectations. Van Voorden Castings was closely involved in the CFD calculations during the early stages of ship design, this enabled

us to design the propeller and nozzle as efficiently as possible. With both, we strived for the highest possible fuel savings. Meanwhile, the ship has sailed and the initial results exceed all expectations! We wish the crew of the MDV 1 Immanuel a safe journey. We are fully confident that this is a start in changing the fleet of fishery

vessels and are looking forward to continue to do our bit!

VAN VOORDEN IS HANDING OUT PRESENTS! Recently, we sent a letter to all our Service & Repair customers who had a propeller stored at our premises. In this letter, we indicated that as of 1 July 2015, we can no longer offer “free propeller storage and that we would require storage costs for this service. Propellers could be collected by its rightful owners of course, or if the propeller is no longer of use, our clients

could also request for a scrap price quotation. We were able to surprise a number of our customers, as they were not aware of their propeller being in storage. Most of them choose for a scrap price quotation, which was seen as a nice present; and a few even saw it as an opportunity to sponsor the wedding of their son or daughter!

CO-OPERATION DAMEN DREDGING EQUIPMENT AND VAN VOORDEN CASTINGS BROUGHT TO NEW HIGHTS For our customers, we produce high alloyed industrial castings such as pump casings, impellers, double walled pipeline systems and other wear parts. We deliver these products to the dredging industry, worldwide. Our customers are always on the move and continue to innovate. This also includes Damen Dredging Equipment, who have invested substantially in new developments the last year. End 2014, Damen requested our co-operation in bringing five new pump casings on the market, scheduled for 2015. Of course we were happy to oblige. Currently, two of the five pumps are in production, a BP9080 half axial pump and a BP8065MD. The engineering department of Damen has herein worked together with our engineers of planning and casting. During this intense collaboration, we have optimised the end product casttechnically. We have even taken it

to the next level with the complex model of the 9080 half axial pump. Together with the pattern maker, the moulding department and engineers of DDE, we have extensively discussed and checked the 3D-model of the wooden patterns and matching core box. The core boxes and wooden

patterns are necessary to mould the final casting. This way, a pump system of the highest quality can be delivered, consisting of a pump casing, impeller, suction mouth and various wear plates.

THE RUSSIAN ICE IS BROKEN Nowadays it is allowed to sail closer and closer to the polar caps. As this results in situations and risks that are getting more and more extreme, Russian classifications demand that propeller blades of an ice breaker must be able to be replaced without dry docking. This means applying the so called built-up propellers. A separate hub is placed onto the shaft, where after the supplied blades are bolted onto this hub (see figure 1).

x 3300 mm in diameter), we have also been requested to make the final design and to have it approved by the Russian classification society RMRS

The Finnish thruster manufacturer Steerprop has asked Van Voorden to think along how to secure the blades onto the hub for two ice-class thrusters. When giving out the order for four stainless steel built-up systems (2 x 2700 mm and 2

for the ice class “Icebreaker 6”. For us a great opportunity to show our knowledge in designing and material expertise!
