Toni and Jim Glover

Welcome to Pentwater

The piercing shrill of an officials’ whistle, the nervous faces of kindergarten students (usually, more mom and dad), the playful laughs of students on the playground, these are a few signs that a new school year is upon us. As our many visitors end their vacations, our village does not shut down in the absence of our summer guests, quite the contrary. The beginning of our school year is an exciting and busy time for students, families and staff alike. There are still exciting events and activities on our fall, winter and spring schedules, and we invite our summer friends to experience all that Pentwater has to offer all year long. As we say goodbye to summer friends, we look forward to the questionably slower pace of our fall and, with that, the first days of school. My husband, Jim, and I have called Pentwater home since 1970. We were blessed to have had the privilege of growing up here, to attend school here and return after college and raise our family here. Our son, Caleb, also a graduate of PPS, is now in his third year at the University of Michigan. One of the jewels of our community, though there are many, is our local public school, the home of the Pentwater Falcons. I consider it a privilege every day to work with the dedicated staff, students

and parents as we collectively appreciate and celebrate the belief that “Everybody Is Somebody!” This motto might be realistically difficult in a bigger district, but it is an easy vision to embrace with a school family of 275 students and 40 staff members. The administration and teaching staff at PPS are second to none in their dedication and commitment to students. We are proud to be in our third year of our 1:1 technology initiative, which was 100 percent funded with grant monies. Each student is assigned a device to enhance the learning experience. In this technologically-driven age, we are preparing our students and incorporating the tools that they will need to compete skillfully in our high tech world. You will frequently see students collaborating with teachers and other students on projects in Google classroom, completing assignments and assessment testing, skyping with students across the country, and elementary students being mentored by secondary students researching endangered animals, just to name a few. The district’s athletic participation opportunities are varied and enjoyed by students with an a nearly 60 percent participation rate. We have a strong boosters club which spends countless CONTINUED ON PAGE 19 PENTWATER THIS WEEK 1

Criss-cross, criss-cross, 121 per inch in a myriad of colorful floss. Julie Nelson finds beauty, relaxation and family roots in each tiny stitch. For 45 years, Nelson has been preserving picturesque and meaningful moments in her life through this artform. She credits her late mother-in-law, Mary Nelson, for showing her how to cross-stich after she watched her do it when they would visit. Since that time, Nelson says she has only taken one class and has improved through practice. Nelson, and her husband, Doug, live in a gorgeous home that was built by her late parents, Joe and Joyce Walcott, in the 1960s with sweeping views of the Pentwater channel and downtown Pentwater. The Nelsons moved to Pentwater full-time in 2011, though “I came here my whole life. My mother was born here,” Julie says. Doug and Julie also own the historic home just next door that formerly belonged to the Pentwater Stationmaster and was built in 1874. “It’s strictly for summer, as there is no heat inside. There are a lot of bedrooms, but only one bathroom,”

Nelson said. “There is a lot of history in there. Some of the furniture was left by the previous owner, along with books from the early 1900s.” She said that they purchased that home in 1998 and that it used to sit closer to the railroad that ran along what is now Chester Street, but was moved back in the 1930s. It had dorms for the railroad workers, she said, and a parlor for people to wait for the train. “In the 1920s there was a very famous murder in Chicago. It was known as the ‘murder of the century.’ Their names were Leopold and Loeb, and they both got caught and sentenced to life plus 99 years,” Doug explained, as he held up a book entitled with their sentence and written by Leopold. “One of the people he dedicated the book to was his psychologist, Professor William F. Byron, who helped in his rehabilitation. Byron used to own (the stationmaster’s) house.” “One day, a few years back, an elderly woman showed up inquiring if the Stationmaster’s house was for sale. I told her that she was welcome to look inside, and she said she would like to someday as the stationmaster was her father,” Julie said. “We’ve worked very hard to maintain integrity of that house.” Back to her cross-stitch, Nelson said she has moved from patterns to actual photography, some even taken by her daughter, Megan, and she said she likes to keep the photograph nearby for reference. She uses a website called stitchyourphoto.com, where she uploads the high-resolution image and is returned with a multi-page, counted cross-stitch pattern, complete with a color-coded key. She said that her completed work adds an

“amazing weight to the fabric.” Her work displayed in her home includes a photo from a Port Huron to Mackinac race, a Fourth of July sunset, the Pentwater Yacht Club with Doug on a boat in front

(taken by Megan), and a bouquet of beautiful lavender. Nelson said she follows the patterns closely, but “fudges” and does her own thing to get it just right. The quality of the camera and the

number of pixels in the photo are important when turning it into a pattern, Nelson explained. “I work in blocks of 11 count,” she said. “Some people find this tedious, but I don’t think it is tedious at all. I like to do it in the evening in the winter months.” Nelson moves around her canvas using a small embroidery hoop and said she has used frames and larger hoops in the past, but they can become cumbersome. She said she spends six to seven months on a large piece, and completes one per year. She said

‘Harvest Day’ to expand farmer’s market season After another successful summer of farm fresh fruits and vegetibles, homemade goodies and goods, wine and coffee at Pentwater’s bi-weekly farmer’s market on the village green will come to a close Monday, Sept. 5. Just because the summer season has come to a close doesn’t mean that farmer’s market vendors won’t have a bounty of fall harvest goods. With that in mind the Pentwater Farmer’s Market is planning to re-open for a special “Harvest Day” Thursday, Sept. 22. According to the Pentwater Chamber of Commerce, organizers of the market, Harvest Day is in response to area residents and visitors who have requested one more day for the Pentwater Farmer’s Market season to purchase fall goodies. Harvest Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be followed by the 26th annual Fall Fest Art, Craft & Antique Fair Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24-25.

PENTWATER THIS WEEK 7

Celebrating 10 years of PTW A look back at the people and institutions that make Pentwater the place to be

BY MARY BETH CRAIN PTW WRITER

2016 marks a milestone in the history of Pentwater This Week, as the magazine celebrates its 10th summer of publication. And it has indeed been an exciting decade of lively looks at the people and institutions of a community known for its beauty, charm and welcoming spirit. The late Mary Sanford, editor and co-founder, with publisher Jim Young, of PTW, and editor of Oceana’s Herald-Journal, made the following opening statement in May 2007: “This summer, Oceana’s Herald-Journal hopes to keep you even more connected with Pentwater’s news and events, its history and beauty, and share more stories of its wonderful people in this new weekly news magazine—Pentwater This Week.” It didn’t take much time for PTW to become an eagerly anticipated event. Its popularity wasn’t difficult to figure out: reading it was like popping in for a chat with the many interesting people who form the community, and getting a fascinating glimpse into their lives. It might be someone new to you, or someone familiar, but there always seemed to be something to learn. Time and again, Pentwaterites would remark, as they read about a friend or neighbor, “Wow. I never knew that about him/her.” UPS delivery man Bill House was the cover interview for the premiere issue May 24, 2007, and he exemplified the spirit of Pentwater with his gregarious nature and neighborly caring for all of his customers. Over the years, House made friends with so many people that he and wife Sharon were invited to countless weddings, graduations and other family events. Other familiar faces who were profiled in 2007 included Roger Bailey, “Pentwater’s Mr. History;” 14-yearold Caity Bateson, who won fifth place in the National Chemistry Competition; Dee and Don Becke, owners of Hill & Hollow Campground; Lee and Elaine Curtis, own8 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

ers of the Halcyon Nature Preserve; and the band Pentwater. Oh, and let’s not forget Pentwater’s pooches—in a humorous trek off the beaten path, some of the village’s favorite dogs—like Jack King’s lab, Captain Jack; Rhodes Baker’s Charlie the Standard Poodle; Gay Birchard’s little Shih-tzu, Zoe, the Princess of Pentwater; and six other canine stars—got their moment of fame. In 2008, PTW explored everything from ghosts at the historic Ida Jean Guest House to the busy life of glass artist Sue Hopp. We got to know “Pentwater’s Music Man,” Dan Root; the Garden Club of Pentwater; and the members of the Pentwater Coffee Club. And there was a special tribute to the Pentwater Fire Department, Village Marshals and police chiefs. 2009 featured a wide array of interesting figures, including Pentwater School’s engaging teacher/singer/ songwriter Rick McGrath; Polly Lent, an original resident

of the historic Oceana Beach community; Rick “Doc” Williams, the dentist who keeps Pentwater smiling; romance writer Dorien Kelly; and the beloved “Mrs. R,” Joyce Rottschafer, who, with husband, Ron, kept Pentwater supplied with her mouth-watering homemade baked goods. The summer of 2010 opened with a piece on the Pentwater VFW that featured interviews with WWII vets like Milt Pugsley, Bud Stenberg and Bill Brown, and Vietnam vet Jim Carlson. Sadly, Milt and Bud are no longer with us, but fortunately their humor, insight and fighting spirits were captured in PTW. There was Carla Wilson and her missionary work in India; Lee Ann Kenyon, Pentwater Preschool’s founding teacher, who was retiring after 33 years; and Greg and Eva “Boo” Gregwer, who built their own 18-hole golf course. And who knew that Pentwater had its very own circus girl—Gloria Egermaier, who was once a Wild West rider and showgirl for Ringling Bros. In 2011, we visited the Artisan Center; Pet Hollywood, where owner Laurie Turowski makes Pentwater’s dogs and cats look camera ready; and the Pentwater Post Office, a meeting place for all of Pentwater, presided over by the world’s friendliest postmaster, Fred McHugh. We got to tour two very different dream homes: Steve and Kathy Hamilton’s self-designed mini-manse moderne, and Andrea and Barry Ziebarth’s haunted 1877 Victorian on Park St., where famed Pentwater entrepreneur William Sands died a gruesome death after being shot by a madman. And what other town can boast a Welding and Gourmet Society, where members combine the arts of welding and dining? In 2012, PTW featured, among others, Pentwater kids’ favorite police officer Randy Lentz; Nantucket basket artist Fredy Schafer; Mike Castor and his kites; veteran piano teacher EiAUG. 30 - SEPT. 6

leen Griffis; former Pentwater School principal and passionate sailor Bill Bluhm; Citizen of the Year Ed Bigelow; and our own Mary Sanford, who was fighting the good fight against terminal cancer and passed away the following year. 2013 took us to the Cottage Garden Café, and to the homes of longtime Pentwater businessman Dean Gustafson; Village President and “Madame Pentwater” Juanita Pierman; fabric artist, aka “Woman of the Cloth” Hildy Montgomery; and Craig and Pat Scheneman, who’d achieved the feat of visiting every one of the country’s 50 national parks. 2014 gave us insight into the incredible life of the late Milt Pugsley, who flew seaplanes during WWII and planes for Chrysler Corporation for several decades following. Others profiled included Patti Denison, owner of the newlyexpanded Village Grounds; wood jewelry artist Jerry Wygant; Rick and Karen St. Denis, owners of Fair Trade and founders of Centenary Methodist’s free weekly community dinners; Citizen of the Year Dave Roseman; and glass artist Jilly Barnes, whose giant glass sculpture was one of the top four finalists later that year during ArtPrize in Grand Rapids. We sang the blues at Hayes Blueberry Farms, and cheered the grand opening of the Pentwater Historical Society Museum. 2015 was another great year for PTW, with profiles of wildlife rescuer Kathy Babbin, found-

er of Misty Bend Wildlife Sanctuary; Senior Olympics gold medalist in tennis Larry Lewis, still tearing up the courts at 88; Ryan Williams, who never let the fact that he’s a quadriplegic interfere with his love of life and the outdoors; double lung transplant recipient Gordon Veldman; Fred and Jenny Cisler and their enchanting “secret” garden, and others. And as the summer of 2016 draws to an end, we’ve gotten to know a whole new group of captivating locals, from artist and mental health activist Barb Davidson and 90-year-old baseball champ and WWII vet Hal Carlin to Storybook Village’s Barbara Sims, London-inspired milliner Andrea Blohm, “Quilt Whisperer” Beverly Roberts, and 2016 Citizen of the Year Sally Ouweneel.

Bike rack unveiled

PTW Photos by Andrew Skinner

A crowd of nearly 30 people, above, attended the unveiling of the “Purposeful Art” bike rack created by Pentwater Public School student Aiden Shotwell. Shotwell, right, pictured with Paul O’Grady, Claudia Ressel-Hodan, Gene Davidson and Larry Pazol, was the winner of Pentwater Arts Council’s bike stand contest earlier this year. His design was chosen from a number of entries and was fabricated and painted by area craftsmen, O’Grady, Davidson and Pazol and is now located at the corner of Hancock and First streets in the Village of Pentwater. Village of Pentwater to celebrate sesquicentennial in 2017

Village incorporated March 16, 1867

The Village of Pentwater will kickoff its 150th anniversary celebration Thursday, March 16, 2017. “In 2017 we will look back at the days gone by in the Village of Pentwater. From looking at how it has changed over the years to mapping the village’s growth to remembering some of the most infamous moments,” said Pentwater Chamber of Commerce Director Eva Gregwer. “There will be new and expanded upon activities throughout 2017 to show how proud we are of this village. The “Throughout the Years” theme will showcase the Village of Pentwater in many different aspects,” Gregwer said. The celebration begins March 16 with a sesquicentennial dinner at the Pentwater Friendship Center. The evening will include guest speakers, dinner and a slideshow of the Village of Pentwater, “Throughout the Years.” Pentwater’s second annual Found12 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

er’s Day is set to take place the first Saturday of May and will show residents and visitors alike the rich history in which the Village of Pentwater was founded. Founder’s Day will include a number of exhibits, speakers, activities and more to take you back in time to experience Pentwater in the 1800s. On Sunday, June 4 the Village of Pentwater will host its 21st annual Start of Summer Party which will grasp the “Throughout the Years” theme. Each table will represent a decade. Those attending are asked to choose a decade and dress in clothing from that era as they take part in an evening of music, dancing, food and fun. Pentwater’s 87th homecoming celebration, Aug.10-13 will be expanded upon, according Gregwer. “There will be a decade dress activity, new floats, a “Throughout the Years” slideshow, bigger and better fireworks and more.” Many ideas have been put forth dur-

About the Village of Pentwater

The Village of Pentwater was incorporated March 16, 1867 by the Michigan Legislature. The settlement of Pentwater began in 1853 with the opening of a sawmill which burgeoned into a great lumbering industry. At one time Pentwater was home to the largest shingle mill in the United States. Due to the excellent shipping facilities, factories for brick, furniture and a foundry grew. In the 1900s, Pentwater soon became known as a wonderful resort area. Charles Mears State Park, founded after 50 acres of land was deeded by lumber baron Charles Mears. There are many Victorian homes and cottages throughout the historic village. The village green serves as a community gathering point and hosts a number of events throughout the year, including Thursday night Pentwater Civic Band concerts during the summer for the past 69 years. Highlights of the annual summer season are the mid-July annual Fine Arts Fair hosted by the Pentwater Jr. Women’s Club and the Pentwater Homecoming Celebration in August. As of today, Pentwater’s fame of natural beauty, fishing, boating, fine parks, beaches, golden sand dunes and harbors is widespread and lure many summer visitors. Many find Pentwater very picturesque and a delightful place to live.

that she has completed around 15 large pieces since the 1990s. In total, since starting over four decades ago, she said she has done over 50 pieces of various sizes. “There can be 40 colors in one inch and I only use one needle,” Nelson said. “I like to do all of the same color at once in each section and sometimes I embellish with french knots for depth.” Otherwise, Nelson said she sticks to basic cross-stitch, and likes to double her preferred DMC brand embroidery floss, always crossing her stitches in the same direction. “My daughter likes to look and see if she can find a stitch that I did backwards,” she laughed. She also said that she has been known to take stitches out “if the colors don’t seem right.” Nelson is also a planner, continuously thinking of her next project before diving in. Next on her docket, after completing the piece she is currently working on, is to do three smaller pieces that will be framed next to each other. “I want to do three houses in Pentwater that mean a great deal to me. They are my great grandmother’s, my grandmother’s and my great aunt’s homes. I grew up with summers in town at my grandmother’s.” “I do things that are meaningful

to me. I make them for my children and grandchildren,” Nelson said, adding that she has never done one on commission and has not displayed her work in any galleries or juried fairs. Nelson prefers working on landscapes, but would like to try doing people one day. “I did do one of my son’s dog, Jake, which was a challenge as he is an almost all white dog.” The Nelson’s children and six grandchildren visit as often as they can from the Chicago area and stay in the stationmaster’s house. Far more of Nelson’s crossstitched pieces are on display in that home, including: fall scenes, South Carolina homes, a Peter Rabbit montage, a plethora of lighthouses she plans to visit (with matching miniature statues to

boot), and one from a photo of the very same house, that when one enters the home, looks exactly like a photograph until closer inspection. There is also one of the Oceana Beach Association Clubhouse/hotel “That will go to my son (Ryan) one day, as that is where he was married.” Most of her pieces have a distinctive J NELSON stitched in black in the bottom right corner along with the year the piece was completed. Nelson said they are a big Michigan State University family, with her father, both she and Doug, and their children all attending the Big 10 school. She reminisced that she and Doug met at their mutual high school in Flint when they were both lifeguards, but being a year older she went off to MSU

first, and he followed a year later. Nelson said she earned her teaching degree in social sciences at the high school level there and later went on to manage businesses for a friend during her career. The Nelsons are extremely active in the Pentwater community as well. Doug is currently serving as commodore of the Pentwater Yacht Club, and they both race Ensigns, just on different boats. “It keeps it interesting,” Doug commented, adding that they don’t keep score of who wins. “We are very involved in the Oceana Beach Association and Pentwater Yacht Club and love to be out on the water,” Julie said. “I just started to learn how to golf, and we have spent the last 15 years remodeling these two houses and doing the work ourselves.” Julie also volunteers for COVE, and they have had the stationmaster’s house on its home tour in years past. “They are a great group of people,” she said of the COVE volunteers. She added that after the home tour she became known as “the cross-stitch lady.” She also enjoys flowers and birds and used to be part of the Pentwater Garden Club and maintained the flowers around the Welcome to Pentwater sign for some time. Doug is also a member of the Pentwater Artisan Center and has learned to make ballpoint pens by turning wood on a lathe and has also learned to MIG weld. Julie joined a knitting group that meets Mondays at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church. She brings her crossstitch, while they knit. “It was one of the best things I did after moving here. We share stories and resources,” she noted. “When I leave, I say ‘Thanks for the therapy girls.’ They are all so nice.” “Our friends said, ‘What will you do in Pentwater?’ We assured them that we would be just fine,” Julie said. “We are just so happy to be here.” AUG. 30 - SEPT. 6

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 hours at concession stands and have raised thousands of dollars by purchasing uniforms, sporting equipment and other items to allow for our students to be able to take advantage of the benefits of being part of a team. Another way that we shine is by the enormous support that we receive from our caring and generous community. We frequently get individuals inquiring as to how they may donate funds for student needs such as winter coats and boots or how they may volunteer their time to benefit our kids. You can frequently see community members visiting and sharing with students in classrooms, assisting in class projects, or working with small reading groups, etc. Local civic groups greatly impact the futures of our students by generously awarding thousands of dollars for post-secondary learning opportunities for our graduating seniors. Local businesses never hesitate to donate items for student events such as PTCO carnivals, fundraisers, prom after parties, etc. Pentwater schools offers our students world experiences through our Spanish & Art Club. Caleb was able to travel to Spain and France during his involvement in the club. The club has made trips to Costa Rica, Paris, Spain, and this year plans to visit Nicaragua. Our Parent Teacher Community Organization (PTCO) funds many activities within the district such as student assemblies, student of the month prizes, purchasing teaching supplies and other meaningful projects, such as Red Ribbon Week for alcohol and drug abuse awareness. In November each year, the student council plans and hosts the local Veterans Day assembly honoring all local military veterans, thanking them for their service. This is a very moving and humbling celebration, and we encourage you to attend this event, if possible. Finally, what makes our school great is the dedication and commitment of all of the parents, grandparents, family members and other special friends that play a huge part in the education AUG. 30 - SEPT. 6

There are many ways to get from Chicago, Ill. to Pentwater, and one of the lesser taken ways could arguably be said by bicycle. Yet that is exactly how Allie Boyaris and Daniel Lakemacher made their way from River Forest, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, to Boyaris’ grandparent’s, Nick and Roberta Boyaris, cottage in Pentwater. The 264.5 mile trek took the pair four days to complete. The first leg of their journey took them 72.3 miles from River Forest, Ill. to Portage, Ind. The second took them 74.5 miles from Portage, Ind. to South Haven, Mich. Their third, and longest, day was 88.2 miles from South Haven, Mich. to the Manistee National Forest in Whitehall, Mich. John, drove them back to River Forest, Ill. so Allie could get back to school at Concordia University. “My granddaughter rides her bike every day and doesn’t have a car. Her friend has done a number of long over-the-road trips, but this was her first one. She is a very ath-
