2014 SEASON OUTLOOK Returning 20 of 22 starters from a season ago, Head Coach Bobby Ladner and the Anderson University Ravens are looking for a breakout season in 2014. The Ravens return all 11 starters on offense and nine on the defensive side of the ball. The Ravens will lean on an experienced defense which led the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) in tackles per game in 2013. The defensive corps also ranked second in the conference in pass yards per game (191.8). Special teams is another area in which Anderson excelled in last season, ranking third in the HCAC in both kickoff average and kickoff return average. RUNNING BACK Anderson returns senior WORTHAM running back Johnell Wortham, who led the HCAC a season ago averaging 4.9 yards per rush, and was second in the league with 65.6 rushing yards per game. “Johnell is one of the best running backs in the HCAC and in the region,” stated Ladner. “He is a true NFL prospect and we are looking for him to have a really strong season.” Along with Wortham, Joshua Adkins, a speedy back who scored one of AU’s seven rushing touchdowns in 2013, will give the backfield added depth. QUARTERBACK The quarterback position is one of the deepest for the 2014 Ravens, as they return junior Brady Cavinee, who CAVINEE threw for more than 700 yards last season. The Ravens also have an outstanding group of freshmen coming in that will provide competition right away, led by freshman 14

Luke Calvert. A year ago, Cavinee led Anderson with four touchdowns, and completed 44.6% of his passes. WIDE RECEIVER Wide receiver Marc Jones had a stellar freshman campaign last season, and looks to build on that success in 2014. He led the team with 476 receiving yards and four touchdowns a season ago. “We will really look for Marc to be a leader with our receiving corps. He has some of the best hands on the team,” added Ladner. Also returning for the Ravens are seniors Jake Yager and Willie Robinson. Yager is a very good route runner, while JONES Robinson brings a lot of speed to the outside. OFFENSIVE LINE Possibly the biggest focal point for the Ravens’ coaching staff as they enter the season is the offensive line. They return all five starters from a 2013 group who struggled at times, but Ladner is optimistic that a year’s experience will make a huge difference. “The offensive line had a great spring and they learned a lot. Each of these guys are more physical and more seasoned, and we look for a big improvement in this area in 2014.” Assistant Coach Max Gaumer, in his ROBINSON third season with the Ravens, will take over duties with the o-line this year. Gaumer brings over 30 years of coaching experience to the Ravens, as both a head coach and a line coach.

Even though Anderson lost only two defensive starters from last year’s squad, one of those vacancies will leave a big void in the Ravens’ defense for 2014. Defensive back Tyler Ganus led the HCAC in tackles and tackles per game, led the nation (Division III) in solo tackles, and finished second in the nation in tackles per game. “Despite the graduation of Tyler, I am extremely happy with how our defense looks,” said Ladner. “I think we can be one of the best defensive teams in the conference.” LINEBACKER The linebacker position will be the cornerstone of the Ravens defense, as they return a group of physical and smart players, led by senior Nate Moser and junior Sammy Faulkner. Moser put together an outstanding junior campaign, recording 137 MOSER tackles, which ranks fourth all-time in the AU record book. Moser ranked second in the HCAC in tackles per game, third in the NCAA in solo tackles, and sixth in the NCAA in tackles per game. Faulkner led the Ravens a year ago with 14 tackles for loss and three sacks. His 34 solo tackles and 75 total tackles each ranked fourth on the squad. DEFENSIVE LINE One reason for the success of the AU linebacker corps over the past couple seasons has been the play of the Ravens defensive line. Anderson returns the majority of key players from the DL last season, and that added year of experience and growth has Ladner and the rest of the coaching staff excited. In 2013, Drew Ponder recorded 35 tackles, four tackles for loss, and two sacks. Jason Samuels had 33 tackles, 5.5 tackles for RAVEN FOOTBALL

loss, and two sacks. As a freshman, Cameron Shepherd had 14 tackles and 0.5 sacks. Seniors Sean Brooks and Joseph Quinn combined for 38 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks a season ago, and will look to give leaderhip to the defensive line. DEFENSIVE BACK Perhaps the youngest area on defense is at defensive back, as the Ravens bring back just two starters from a season ago, Jeremy Gonzalez and Josh Balvich. Gonzalez had one of Anderson’s nine forced fumbles, while Balvich recorded 11 tackles.

SAMUELS

SPECIAL TEAMS The Ravens feature a pair of sophomore punters, each of whom averaged over 35 yards per punt in 2013. Brandon Duerksen and Daniel Chrzan split time punting, and combined for 13 punts inside the opponents’ 20 and eight fair cathes. The Ravens welcome a number of new kickers, led by junior Trenton Priser. “Overall, our special teams were pretty solid last season,” said Ladner. “We did not make a ton of mistakes, and that is always one of the most important aspects of a good special teams unit.” Anderson’s kickoff return game was a strong point in 2013, and the Ravens bring back Zack Moe, who averaged 18.25 yards per MOE return. As a squad, Anderson ranked third in the HCAC with an 18.5 yard average per return. Wide receivers Marc Jones and Willie Robinson also returned kicks, averaging a combined 11.5 yards per return. 15
