Out of these I would like to point out the international competition “Revitalization of Erbil Citadel, Phase I”, organized by the UNESCO. We developed an architectural study of the historical Erbil Citadel, one of the most ancient permanently inhabited cities in the world. My main responsibilities included: analysis and organisation of the previous documentation, analysis of the possible evolution of the buildings through time, drawing plans, sections, and ornamental details, and assembling competition sheets. Within the frame of the previous rehabilitation plan, we also elaborated a proposal for two Boutique Hotels in two different houses within Erbil Citadel. My main responsibilities were to develop the entire proposed project, under the supervision of the architect Carlos Clemente San Román. I also collaborated in the Master Rehabilitation Plan of the Discalced Carmelites Convent in Ecija, in Sevilla, analysing and organizing the original documentation, and drawing ornamental details. Other responsibilities while working in this studio were to draw zoning plans of other restoration projects, as well as making site visits and writing up the minutes.

Master Project _ al-Tagr al-Awsat, Archaeological Advanced Studies Centre

After a close study of the city of Guadalajara I felt that the city, despite its great historical past, is on the way to becoming a dormitory town for Madrid. All the economic activities have been removed from the city centre, and its cultural resources, especially its architectural heritage, are being ignored or underestimated, the most significant case being the Royal Alcรกzar, which is more or less in ruins nowadays. The main aim of the project emerged after this analysis, and to work on an attempt to revitalize the city, trying to avoid it becoming a dormitory town, became the plot for this project. In order to achieve this, I focused my attention on the Royal Alcรกzar. This building, dating from the 8th century, was the seed of the city and was for centuries a political and power centre. It was abandoned in the 15th century until the late 19th century when it was rehabilitated, first as a military establishment, and at the beginning of the 20th century as an orphanage. During the Civil War it was bombed and seriously damaged as a result. It has never been restored since then. 4

With my rehabilitation proposal I am trying to recover the Royal Alcázar as it was once was, the seed of the city. I would like its refurbishment to become an inspiration for the rehabilitation of other historic buildings, aiding the cultural recovery of the city, and achieving with it new economic activity based on the city’s patrimonial resources, attracting new visitors and tourists. The new archaeological advanced studies centre will be divided into two different areas, one in the ruins of the Alcázar focused on archaeological excavation, and a second one in the new building beside them focused on the study and public exhibition of the archaeological remains found in the ruins. This new building presents a closed façade to the outside and is 1’5 metres below street level, so it appears to be a foundation for the Alcázar ruins from the outside. The interior façades are opened and closed with sophisticated steel louvers that facilitate a constant view of the Alcázar, this being always present while you are in the new building, as the seed of the whole project. 5

Master Plan of the Revitalization of Erbil Citadel, Phase I, Iraq. UNESCO. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE.

Collaborating in the Archiarena studio as an intern, I worked on several projects, all of them related to rehabilitation, developing different tasks. Out of these the ones I would like to underline are those shown in this portfolio. I had the chance to take part in the international competition Revitalization of Erbil Citadel, Phase I, organized by the UNESCO. For this competition we prepared plans in which we defined the actual state of each building differentiating the walls according to their date of construction, as well as defining details of the residential buildings. Within the frame of the previous rehabilitation plan, we also elaborated a proposal for two Boutique Hotels in two different houses in Erbil Citadel. 6

Master Plan: train station and town hall in Alcalรก de Henares

It is well known that the railway line separates the urban areas of Alcala de Henares so this projects focuses on rearranging the urban concept, developing a new park that will unite the two divided sides of the city, and building in the park two new focal points of activity, a new train station and a new town hall with a police station. The first project decision was to bury the railway lines underground, leaving a big empty space in the middle of the town where developing a new park seems appropriate and logical. The park is developed along the west-east axis, with three big concrete areas that unite both sides of the city with pedestrian circulation. 10

On the eastern side of the park, we find the new railway station and the new town hall. Both buildings have an open ground floor, so pedestrians have an uninterrupted view when walking through the park. The railway station is aligned along the north-south axis, forming the border of the east edge of the park. The town hall and police station are beside the railway station, bordering part of the north edge. Both buildings are directly connected to the main street that leads to the historical centre. 11

The chosen space, near the main square, is currently used as a parking area for the workers of the town hall or as a secondary cross area to the medieval part of the city. Despite that, the chosen square has a privileged urban situation, between two medieval towers, both dated before the 8th century, facing up and without any building that breaks the relation between them. So, it’s proposed an information and tourism centre that acts also as several viewpoints of the city, the towers and the medieval wall, becoming an urban landmark to watch the city as well as be seen and recognized.

The chosen place it’s the back of the town hall, which it is underestimated, left as a parking area of the town hall, despite de fact that it has privilege sights of several outstanding historical monuments, and it is one of the entrances of the “Ciudad Monumental”. 13

Sustainable residential housing in TorrejĂłn de Ardoz, Madrid.

The project is proposed as a sustainable representation of the residential housing developed by the architect Rafael Leoz. In order to get it we established a new net and we adapted the original units to it. We defined several units, depending on the use, and their combination will produce the different living typologies, being possible the growth of them easily, thanks to the constructive system chosen. To get this free constructive system we looked up for materials with dry assembly. For the structure we defined empty pillars made of four welded L-beams, allowing the sanitary installations go inside the pillars, making them easily reachable. We tried to achieve a complete systematization and freedom on the constructive process, as well as a saving on the price of the build. 14

We elaborated a Master Plan of urban development in Tres Cantos, in Madrid. We proposed an urban set of low density, integrated in the central park of the town. Given the character of the place, we proposed semidetached houses with two floors, and residential buildings of maximum four floors, with commercial activities on ground floor, leading to complete the social existing equipment. I developed a proposal of a landscape project in Rascafria, leading to recover the brook of the river, which is nowadays being used as backyard of existing houses, full of old furniture and garbage. 15

Landscape project in Passo del Stelvio (Erasmus) ana muntaner miralles cv + portfolio

We started the project as collaboration between two different courses, topographies and projects. We should develop our own new system to map a place and based on that new mapping system, propose an intervention on the mapped landscape. So we started the new system based on 360â ° photographs, which we divided into different layers, studying each layer according to six different parameters. Based on this study, we developed an abstract graphic for each parameter in the different layers. After putting them together, we got six graphics which mapped the landscape abstractly. 16

While developing the new project, we decided to merge the six graphics together. On the final graphic, we found some special points, which we decided to turn into path sections, by ascribing them several section parameters, as wide, deep or wall inclination. By putting these new sections along the mapped landscape, following the initial layers, we got a landscape path across the Passo del Stelvio that is a direct reflection of the landscape surrounding. 17

The original manufacturer, on top of Gurugu hill, it’s recovered as a centre where the theatrical group can produce the new scenographies and prepare new plays, as well as rehearse the plays. The manufacturer centre located at the bottom of the hill, related to the railway tracks, it’s recovered with a more public use, as an exhibition centre of the new plays, as well as a temporary training centre, where the group can give courses and workshops. The new theatre scene production centre it’s completed by a landscape rehabilitation of the lime fields located on the hillside between the two manufacturers sets, by artificial lighting, giving them a set design character. The old urban settlements of Matillas are proposed, after their restoration, as accommodation for the new users. It’s also proposed the exploitation of the bordering solar field, as a way to take advantage of existing renewable energies.

In order to achieve the rehabilitation and recovery of the old cement manufacturer “El León”, and therefore the old Matillas settlements, which depended of it, we proposed a new use for the set, as a theatre scene production centre for the theatrical group La Fura dels Baus. Through this new activity we hoped to achieve the complete rehabilitation of the surrounding territory, abandoned currently, with new users, permanents as well as temporary. 18

We developed a minimal bathroom and kitchen unit, trying to make its assembly the more automatic as possible, making it easy to move. In order to achieve that, we proposed a technical wall, made of “trays”, in which will be placed the different bathroom and kitchen elements. The trays are fixed to two tubular empty beams that will support them, allowing the sanitary installations go inside the beams. The trays turn around these pillars, opening one side the kitchen ones, and to the other side the bathroom ones. The empty space left of an opened tray can’t be seen from the other side of the wall, thanks to the closing panels added, allowing a complete privacy for the users. 21
