VESSELS BRASS ANATOMY DESIGN SOUTH AFRICA

AUSTRIA DESIGN DISCOURSE SOUTH AFRICA

VESSELS BRASS YEAR: 2013 DESIGNER: ANATOMY DESIGN/MEGAN HESSE, ANDREA KLEINLOOG PRODUCER: ANATOMY DESIGN

This sleek and elegant set of vessels comes from Anatomy Design in Johannesburg. The question of whether they are vases or containers is a basic one for the design, since on the one hand, they are objects that allow the designer an enormous amount of freedom; but on the other hand, they provide just as few guidelines for orientation. The vessels on exhibit here, made of brass-plated spun steel, look expensive. They are decorative, but with a clean and understated sophistication.

Art in the Forest is a ceramic centre where artists and artisans work full time or rent a studio space. The organisation is under the direction of the well-known South African master potter Anthony Shapiro. As many as six times a year their gallery holds exhibitions showcasing the works of prominent South African ceramicists. All of the profits from Art in the Forest are donated to their Light from Africa Foundation and are used, on the one hand, to provide free pottery classes for children who have no access to art education and, on the other, to organise therapeutic healing courses in

WOODEN LONG-BIKE YEAR: 2012 DESIGNER: CAMERON BARNES PRODUCER: CAMERON BARNES

Cameron Barnes, with degrees in Architecture and Environmental Design, has designed and built the Wooden Long-Bike. Because manufactured freight bicycles from Europe and the United States were too expensive for the designer and maker, he decided to improvise with materials that he knew and could work with. The frame comes from an old British Postal Service bike, with an extension and racks attached without any welding, for it was important to Barnes that the timber construction could be completely disassembled and be adaptable. The timber used, Eucalyptus cladocalyx (sugar gum), an ‘alien’ species grown in South Africa, is hard and durable.

YELLOW DOT YEAR: 2014 DESIGNER: DEÁNNE VILJOEN IN COLLABORATION WITH RENÉE ROSSOUW PRODUCER: DE STEYL

The series Play Play Pattern, to which the piece exhibited here, Yellow Dot, belongs, is the result of a collaboration between the designer Déanne Vijoen of the furniture company De Steyl and the pattern designer Renée Roussow. These modular plywood chests are mounted on casters that allow them to be moved freely. Created with pure and simple lines, they suddenly take on character, charm, wit, and a unique identity once a perfectly matched pattern has been applied. The result is a series of aesthetically appealing, contemporary, and unmistakeably South African objects.

PEBBLE STOOL YEAR: 2014 DESIGNER: DOKTER & MISSES/ADRIAAN HUGO, KATY TAPLIN/RONEL JARDAAN PRODUCER: DOKTER & MISSES, RONEL JARDAAN

This furniture is the product of a cooperative effort between Katy Taplin and Adriaan Hugo of Dokter and Misses and the South African textile designer Ronel Jordaan. The Pebble Stool unites the hand-felted stone forms for which Ronel is known with Dokter and Misses’ bent steel forms. The result is a completely original piece of furniture that is appealing for its size and contrast of materials. The seating surface, which looks like an overdimensional marble pebble, is mounted on a wire latticework frame. The surface of this object has been specially treated so that it can be used both indoors and out.

These fun vases come from the renowned Swaziland-based sustainable home dĂŠcor company Gone Rural, with its creative director Philippa Thorne. Representing a new interpretation of traditional African patterns, their contemporary look comes from the brilliant colours and the enlarged scale of the patterns on them. The vases are all the more fascinating because their form is strongly inspired by classical pottery, while the material and weaving technique employed lend them an unexpected softness. They were made freehand by 12 weavers from the Ngwavuma region in Swaziland from a combination of recycled waste textiles

and natural fibres. Gone Rural’s objective is to make use of the classical handicraft skills of the weavers in Swaziland and to give these women a future through contemporary design. In addition, Gone Rural and Philippa Thorne founded a not-profit organisation in 2007 to implement health, education, and empowerment programmes for the women and their communities. Since its inception, the organisation has positively impacted the lives of over 20,000 Swazis in rural areas.

LONG LEG MIRROR YEAR: 2013 DESIGNER: JASPER EALES PRODUCER: LOCAL CAPE TOWN MANUFACTURERS

Jasper Eales has designed a series of mirrors. The one on show here, the Long Leg Mirror, is engaging because of its clear forms and balanced proportions. It leans casually against the wall, but there is no fear of its breaking. A small oak tray supplies the necessary place for makeup, hairbrush, or wristbands and bows. The mirror is no more and no less than it promises to be. But that is as it should be: it’s convincing.

The Carry Table by Leg Studios is a classical example of the flat-pack furniture so typical of a certain Swedish furniture giant. Packed flat and put together with only a single screw, it is easy for even the most inexperienced craftsperson to assemble without instructions. What is unusual about this table, which has been conceived as a laptop desk, is that it allows you to sit and work up close with ease, in contrast to so many other small tables whose legs or thick middle column get in the way. The Carry Table provides an elegant solution to this problem and offers an integrated handle so it can easily be picked up and moved – hence the name!

Lisa Firer Design, founded by the ceramic artist of the same name in Cape Town when she employed two assistants, who have since become crafters in their own right, is a studio that creates various types of ceramics. The particular appeal of the porcelain objects shown here lies in their formal simplicity, so atypical for objects made of this material. The minimalist form becomes an archetype and is then repeated. The repetition is recognisable but each object has individual traits and is not a real copy, unlike products that have been manufactured. It is these differences in the repetitions that are the studio’s signature.

STREET SLEEPER YEAR: 2013 DESIGNER: STREET SLEEPER/OLIVER BRAIN PRODUCER: STREET SLEEPER/CHAWAL WADI

The Street Sleeper by the South African designer Oliver Brain is a social design project where sleeping bags are sewed for the homeless from upcycled PVC advertising banners. By night, they offer protection; by day, they turn into rucksacks. Street Sleeper’s long-term goal is to bring up a positive change in our society. The first step is, to transform the negative environmental consequences of rubbish into immediate relief for those who live on the street. A donation of ZAR150 (ca. €10) will gift a homeless person a Street Sleeper, but of far greater impact than the donation alone is the awareness raised and the ensuing dialogue that develops about life on the street.

LIQUORICE VESSELS YEAR: 2014 DESIGNER: RR STUDIO/RENÉE ROSSOUW PRODUCER: MERVYN GERS CERAMICS

Renée Rossouw is an architect, artist, and pattern designer located in Cape Town. It is a joy to find such an artist on the contemporary design scene. At a time when architects are only slowly daring to use true colours once again, patterns are usually met with wide eyes and a lack of understanding. In design schools patterns are also rarely regarded as a subject worthy of serious consideration that students should be confronted with. It is therefore simply refreshing to see Renée’s aesthetically high quality and colourful works now. She believes her inspiration came from Lego sets of the 1980s and a giant atlas, It’s a Big Big World, which

she was given for her seventh birthday. Who knows? In any case, her works show a South African identity that would be considered attractive anywhere in the world.

Studio Sobeit is located in a wonderful art deco building in the village of Muizenberg at the base of a mountain of the same name. As they themselves state, their desire is ‘to make the ordinary obsolete’. The studio’s highly original and humorous objects are all produced on the premises. The Looking Glass – Keus is a decorative mirror that almost seems to come from another world. The animals and trees that crown the top of the mirror are reminiscent of illustrations in fairy tale books, giving it an almost magical quality.

SUTLA is a team of two furniture, product, and interior designers, Brigitte Hauptfleisch and Altus van Zijl. They themselves describe their work as sustainable, ontrend, locally made with attention to detail, and boasting clear lines and colours that pop. Whether the Rookie desk lamp has all that is not apparent at first glance, but one thing it does have is charm. TIN TEAPOT YEAR: 2009 DESIGNER: HOMEBAKES/WENDY MCLACHLAN PRODUCER: EMVEE POTTERIES

This teapot from the Tin Can Ceramics collection was created by the designer Wendy McLachlan, who lives and works in Cape Town. Its form fits the stereotypes that we have etched in our memories from visits to our grandparents, films, or illustrations and probably invokes some nostalgia in many of us. Only at second glance or when one begins to pick it up is the intended humour apparent: the form of the body of the teapot incomes from an ordinary tin that might have held pureed tomatoes or pineapple slices.

CONTINENTAL & BEDLINGTON POODLE MILK STOOL YEAR: 2011 DESIGNER: WIID DESIGN/LAURIE WIID VAN HEERDEN PRODUCER: WIID DESIGN

The continental & bedlington poodle milk stool comes from the young designer Laurie Wiid van Heerden in Cape Town, who works under the label Wiid Design. In this project, the archetype of the three-legged milking stool has been reinvented with a mixture of a classical material – in this case wood – with an unconventional one – cork. The 100% natural raw material cork is buoyant, impermeable, elastic, able to be pressed, and exerts a positive influence on the thermal and acoustic properties of any space – reason enough for designers to work with this material which has been rather ignored by the mainstream design world. SOLDIER SCREEN YEAR: 2014 DESIGNER: DOKTER & MISSES/ADRIAAN HUGO, KATY TAPLIN/GONE RURAL PRODUCER: GONE RURAL

After a commission for an office screen failed to come to fruition, Dokter and Misses decided to tackle the project themselves. So to that end they teamed up with the Swazi social and handicraft organisation Gone Rural, whose Fluoro vases are also on display in this exhibition. This collaboration resulted in woven room dividers or screens that are mounted on a slender steel frame: a centuries-old weaving technique has found its way into a modern office environment. The screens maintain a clean graphic look and, besides the function of separation, also fulfil decorative needs, providing aesthetic

Nawaaz Saldulker is a young interior and product designer from Cape Town. The object Shelf Light Mini Me appears unremarkable at first glance: unsophisticated form, modest material content, aesthetically certainly welldesigned... While designing this object, Nawaaz was strongly inspired by children, with their carefree nature and ability to give free rein to their creativity and to combine things without worrying about what other people think. Nawaaz emulated this mindset when he began stacking shapes, colours, and patterns to create a totemic sculptural object for the exhibition.

Breaking with tradition, Chris gradually brought in Xhosa men whom she taught to paint ceramics, thus allowing them to cultivate their latent creative abilities. The distinctive tactile style developed by these artisans has become the trademark of the Potter’s Workshop. Their handcraft superiority lead to the cooperation with swedish duo Mattias Rask and Tor Palm, working together under the name Glimp, who designed The Forbidden Fruit Light. The
