C &UHDWLYH /LYLQJ $UWV During Fair week, Fairgoers can meander through The Americraft Cookware Center to view quilts, clothing, baked goods, preserves, elaborately decorated cakes and a huge collection of photography from Oregon’s gifted photographers. The state’s talented gardeners will show off their best blooms in the Floral Competition in the Floral Building. Anyone can enter any of the Fair’s dozens of competitions, which include pie making, woodworking, sewing and growing the perfect zucchini. “Whether you’re 8 or 80, the competitions offer something for everyone to enter and enjoy,” said Andrea Fogue,
who oversees competitions in The Center “These Americraft Cookware Center. competitions are where Oregonians come together to showcase their talent, creativity and passion for their professions and their favorite hobbies.” The Americraft Cookware Center also plays host to some of the Fair’s most popular sponsored competitions, including Gerry Frank’s 54th Layered Chocolate Cake Competition on Sunday, Sept. 1. Homebrew Beer one of many competitions for Oregonians to show skills
Fun Fair Fact The Homebrew Beer C Competition is sponsored by Gilgamesh Brewing in Salem. The 29 categories include beer, mead, me cider, perry and soft drinks. Award-winning brews will be on display in the Floral Building throughout Fair week.

n his Jefferson garage, David Swisher proudly displays more than 200 ribbons and medals — all earned for prize-winning homebrewed beer. The display provides a colorful and orderly backdrop to the shiny industrial kitchen he designed for his hobby. Many of his ribbons are from the Oregon State Fair Homebrew Beer Competition, including a 2011 “Best of Show” award. David, a retired mail carrier, still recalls his first award in 1996 for an imperial stoutstyle beer that judges jokingly dubbed “high-powered rocket fuel” due to its high alcohol content and “hot” flavor. “I was on top of the world,” he said. “It really got me involved, and the passion grew.” He went on to compete in 10 Fairs, winning awards in 28 of 29 categories that included ales, pilsners, lagers and meads. David said he enjoys the home-brewing competition because it gives him the opportunity to meet other brewers and learn techniques to improve his craft from some of the region’s most prestigious judges. 12 | 2013 OREGON STATE FAIR
“You’re competing with some of the best brewers in the United States,” he said. “That gives you the opportunity not only for bragging rights but also to learn. It’s a lot of fun and a lot of excitement.” Homebrew Beer Competition Manager Jeff Trejo said brewing beer is more complicated than it may seem. “Brewing is a science,” he said. Behind every bottle of brew is creativity, dedication, passion and pride. “Homebrewing is the ultimate form of consumable art,” Jeff said. “There are various levels of flavors and complexities that make up a homebrew, all of which take advantage of the agricultural bounties within the Pacific Northwest.” What is David’s secret to brewing an award-winning beer? Using fresh ingredients and a good recipe as well as learning from past mistakes, he said. “After competing time and time again, you finally find through critiques what the judges look for in the categories of aroma, appearance, taste, mouth feel and overall impression,” he said. “The best beer is the one that you like the most. That’s what it’s been for me.”

The festival will feature local blues artist Ty Curtis and Portland-based musician Curtis Salgado. More than 263,000 people attended the 2012 Oregon State Fair.

The first Fair was held in Oregon City in 1861. Admission was 50 cents for men and 25 cents for women. The next year, the Fair moved to Salem to be closer to the state’s biggest industries — agriculture, livestock and timber.

The Fair was canceled during the World War II years of 1943 and 1944 because several branches of the military leased the Fairgrounds to house personnel.

Presidential candidate John F. Kennedy brought his campaign to the Oregon State Fair in 1960.

Forty percent of commercial exhibit space was lost in a 1966 arson fire just weeks before opening day, but Fair managers decided to keep the Fair open.

On opening day of the 1979 Fair, a steer named Rufus escaped from his handlers, swam across the Willamette River to West Salem and found his way to a cornfield. He became the Fair’s mascot during the 1980s.

Sheep showmanship runs in the family
S
even-year-old Will Wade is excited to show off his lamb, Debbie, at the Oregon State Fair. He works with her daily on the family farm outside of Silverton: He feeds, grooms and walks her, and he helps her to stay cool in summer’s heat. Debbie is a black ewe with a characteristically skittish personality. “When you get close to her, she gets scared,” Will said. However, according to older sister Izzy, a 4-H sheep-showing pro, her brother has a knack for working with Debbie. “He’s like a sheep whisperer,” said Izzy, 11. It may be Will’s first time ever showing his own lamb, and he may be among the youngest showmen in Open Class, but sheep showmanship is practically in his blood. After all, he comes from a prestigious line of sheep experts beginning with his grandfathers. His father’s father served as the official shepherd for Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, also known as Virginia Tech. His mother’s father, the late Wayne Feller of Silverton, showed sheep in FFA during the 1950s, later going on to raise his own flock. Will and Izzy’s parents, Billy and Michelle Wade, have continued the family tradition. Along with Michelle’s mother, they raise a flock of 80 to 100 sheep on 200 acres outside of Silverton. The family sells and competes at fairs and livestock shows throughout the country, including the California and Washington state fairs and the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. — “the granddaddy of all sheep shows,” Michelle Wade said. “Of course, Oregon is our home fair and our favorite fair,” she said. Considering the family’s history, it was only natural that Billy and Michelle’s children would show sheep at the Oregon State Fair (though 10-year-old Maggie prefers home arts such as sewing clothing). “Once the third generation starts showing sheep, then you’re in it forever,” Michelle said jokingly. The Wades are among many families that have been showing animals at the state fair for generations. For these families, the fair is more than carnival rides and ice cream cones — it’s a culmination of a year’s worth of hard work. It’s also an opportunity to reunite with old friends.
“The Oregon State Fair is like a family reunion. It’s where the people I’ve been showing sheep with since I was in fourth grade come together to enjoy each other’s company,” Michelle said. She has seen firsthand through her involvement at fair how 4-H and FFA teaches youth leadership skills that participants will carry throughout their lives. “They learn working as a team, they learn the value of hard work, and theyy learn dedication to a project,” she said. Izzy, who has been showing sheep since age 8, looks forward to fair all year. “I like to be able to go show the sheep I’ve been working with for months,” she said. “You get to go out and show off what you accomplished.” The 4-H Pledge I pledge my head to clearer thinking, My heart to greater loyalty, My hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country and my world.
