Extra (weekend/after hours) 4 students did 3 weeks each of ED and ICU while I was there and 2 of us did 6 weeks of ED. You sit down on the first day to work out your timetable between yourselves, so it is a very

flexible rotation. The advised number of shifts is 3 shifts per week and complete at least 2 weekend shifts and 2 afternoon shifts (3pm til midnight) during the attachment. Overall it was not a very time-consuming rotation.
Tips • •
•
The first day is only a half day, Dr Treasure will take you on a tour of the hospital and you work out your timetable and audit topic. Some consultants will engage you and get you to do a lot of things. Others will be very busy and will not engage you, so it will be up to you to find a registrar, RMO or intern to ask to put their name on a patient and allow you to work the patient up under their guidance. Sometimes it works really smoothly and you will have a great shift, other days it is a bit more difficult and you will sit around doing nothing and feeling a bit in the way. On these days your best bet is to keep an eye on the HAS screen for a new patient to be brought into a bay and ask the consultant if they are happy for you to go see them. You’ll get the chance to do lots of IV cannulas. Keep your internship competencies sheet on you so you can get stuff ticked off.

On your first day you will be given three textbooks you can use for the length of the rotation – Oxford Handbook of Emergency Medicine, a radiology text and ABC of Emergency Differential Diagnosis. If you happen to need anything more, I noticed some registrars and consultants liked Medscape articles for quick reference. Click here to enter text. Click here to enter text.
