Time was, if you wanted a macchiato that would pass muster, you had to travel to Italy to get it. However, Australia earned its reputation as a world-class coffee destination long ago – that instant stuff in your nan’s kitchen is modern-day caffeine heresy – and you can find superlative flatties served at cafes far and wide. Coffee connoisseurs have also embraced the quality homebrew movement that is helping us all create barista-worthy espresso on our own benchtops – and Nespresso is at the beating heart of it all. The arrival of the longed-for shots of caffeinated goodness from the swank Swiss coffee brand have definitely been a boon to Garden City’s cafe landscape but, for a while, the java-loving crowds who frequent the centre had to live in coffee limbo, not knowing how long the Nespresso pop-up boutique would continue to supply their famed coffee capsules. Here today, gone tomorrow, we have been at the whim of the pop-up-shop gods. However, in December 2016, Nespresso made the relationship official, with the opening of a permanent Garden City boutique. Now you can sip through Nespresso capsules at the complimentary tasting area, browse the artfully displayed machine gallery and be mesmerized by the rainbow mosaic created by the wall of capsules without being consumed by worry that it all might disappear at a moment’s notice.

Everything from frothy cappuccinos to fuchsia beetroot lattes, irresistible cakes and Insta-worthy sandwiches – alongside perfectly prepared piccolos and flat whites, of course – makes this small indie cafe one of Garden City’s hidden foodie treasures. Modern, minimalist decor and an intimately sized space give it the perfect atmosphere for a mid-shop catch-up with mates and make it the ideal place to camp out with your laptop for a couple of hours.
Jamaica Blue
Need sustenance after a spend, or to steel yourself before entering the belly of the beast and hitting the sales racks? Then slide along one of Jamaica Blue’s comfy leather benches outside the David Jones beauty hall and find help with either. Treat yourself to an artfully chocolate-dusted cappuccino and add a pretty confection to replenish your energy stores if that’s what it’s going to take. You’ll find plenty of fellow shoppers doing the same.
The Coffee Club
A Brisbane-born cafe that specialises in serving all-day breakfast (hello, eggs benny) alongside its well-crafted coffee drinks – brewed with beans roasted in Melbourne and Brisbane. This subway tile-clad spot is a reliable place to mainline your caffeine hit and counteract the dreaded afternoon slump – it stays open until 5.30pm most days. Get your long black to go in one of their signature takeaway cups printed with pithy quips and you’ll be able to muster the energy to face even more fitting-room lights.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS Even the smallest outdoor spaces can be turned into blissed-out spots with the right fixings. For urban dwellers with limited balcony space, try a couple of chairs that look good – well, they will be on display to the neighbours. But make sure they’re comfy enough for you to curl up in with a book, too – you can’t let that precious outdoor space go to waste.
