Filling Whip the double cream with desired amount of caster sugar and a teaspoon of vanilla extract until stiff.

To ensemble the cake, spread the cream mixture on one cake and raspberry jam on the other. Sandwich the cakes together and dust with icing sugar to finish it off.

Carrot Cake

The popularity of the carrot cake in Britain emerged during the Second World War due to rationing. Since then it has been voted the nation’s favourite cake. Here is the recipe to enjoy your own homemade carrot cake.

Ingredients

For the carrot cake • 450ml/16fl oz vegetable oil • 400g/14oz plain flour • 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 550g/1lb 4oz sugar • 5 free-range eggs • tsp salt • Grated carrots For the icing • cream cheese • caster sugar • Softened butter

Remove the cake from the tin and leave to cool on a cooling rack. Icing beat the cream cheese, butter and caster sugar together. Finish the cake off by spreading the icing on the cake with a palette knife.

Gingerbread Man

The gingerbread man dates back to the 16th century. They were first seen at the court of Queen Elizabeth I of England. The bread was shaped in the likeness of some of her important guests. Look below to create your own ginger flavoured bread man.

Scones

The original scone used to be round and flat, usually as large as a mediumsized plate until raising powder was discovered. They are usually filled with raisins, currants, cheese or dates and is popular as a tea snack. Here is an easy recipe to make your own scone.

Ingredients

• 350g self-raising flour, plus more for dusting • tsp salt • 1 tsp baking powder • 85g butter • 3 tbsp caster sugar • 175ml milk • 1 tsp vanilla extract • lemon juice • beaten egg, to glaze

Method

Heat oven to 220C/fan 200C/ gas 7. Put the flour into a large clean bowl with the salt and baking powder, then mix together. Add butter to the dry mixture, then rub in with your fingers until the mix looks like

crumbs. Stir in the sugar. Put the milk into a jug and heat in the microwave until warm, but not hot. Then add the vanilla and lemon juice and set aside for a moment. Put a baking tray with a baking sheet in the oven. Make a well in the dry mix which is in your bowl, then add the liquid and combine it quickly with a butter knife. Scatter some flour onto the work surface and tip the dough out. Add a little more flour to the dough and your hands, then fold the dough over 2-3 times until it’s a little smoother. Pat the dough into a rectangle. Take a 5cm cutter and dip it into some flour and cut your scones. Brush the tops with beaten egg, then carefully place onto the hot baking tray. Bake for 10 mins until risen and golden on the top. You can serve your scones with some jam and cream.

N Narcolepsy Narcolepsy is a rare, but serious and potentially dangerous long term neurological condition in which someone can fall instantly asleep at any time. Narcolepsy also affects the sufferers’ normal sleep patterns. Around 25,000 people in the UK are reported to have narcolepsy, and it is most common in those between the ages of 20 and 40. Narcolepsy is so serious, that it is a condition which must be reported to the DVLA due to the risk that the sufferer could fall asleep whilst operating a vehicle, and cause an accident. It is sometimes not understood what causes narcolepsy. Some experts believe it is due to a deficiency in

orexin or hypocretin in the brain, whilst in some cases it could be caused by the body’s autoimmune reaction to the trib 2 antibody. Some recent research has also identified it could be due to abnormalities in areas of the brain which control REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement). Narcolepsy is diagnosed often after consultations at a sleep disorders clinic. Various tests take place to determine narcolepsy including a PSG and a MSLT. A PSG is a polysomnogram which is an overnight test in which many measurements are taking regarding brain, sleep and REM patterns and ultimately attempts to establish it isn’t another condition. A MSLT is a multiple sleep latency test, which takes place during the day and measurer the effectiveness of preplanned naps and the un-planned nap episodes. Symptoms of narcolepsy include excessive daytime sleepiness, hallucinations, cataplexy (loss of muscle tone which can cause weakness) and

sleep paralysis. Narcolepsy cannot be treated, however there is various medication available to combat symptoms. Sleepiness is treated with amphetamine-like stimulants. Abnormal sleep can be treated using antidepressant medications. Also it is advised to avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and heavy meals. It is also advised to attempt to regulate sleep schedules, including daytime naps (10-15 minutes in length) and regular exercise. Words : Rachael Ince Kitson

O Ovarian Cysts The ovaries, a pair of organs which help to make up a woman’s reproductive system, are vital in the production process of eggs and hormones. They are located in the pelvis region on either side of the uterus. According to the Women’s Health publication, it is estimated that each ovary is the approximate size and shape of an almond. What is it? Ovarian cysts are sacs filled with fluid and are a common occurrence in women during their reproductive years. Most are harmless and will eventually go without need of treatment. Symptoms It is not unusual to have no symptoms at all when dealing with ovarian cysts. However, some

HEALTH symptoms includes; a full feeling in the abdomen, pain during intercourse and other times. Further symptoms are delayed or irregular periods which are unusually painful. Who can be affected? Women within the brackets of “reproductive years” How are they diagnosed? They are typically recognised during yearly pelvic examinations, an ultrasound test or a laparoscopy. Treatment Treatments vary depending on the severity of the cyst. Factors which are considered includes the size of the cyst, the woman’s age, her future birthing/pregnancy plans and of-course the symptoms she is experiencing leading up to the examination. The earlier they are treated, the better and the less invasive the treatment. Physicians will usually advise young women to wait a few months to see if the cyst goes on its own. If persistent, one would be prescribed hormonal pills in a bid to shrink the cyst. Surgery is sometimes necessary if the cyst is unresponsive to all aforementioned treatments. Ladies, we can’t stress enough how important it is to get in the habit of having (at least) a yearly check up! Words : Jan-Marie Revers @JMRevers

EVERYONE IS TURNING VEGAN…. WHY?

M

any people are vegans and they decided to choose this diet for better health, environmental or ethical reasons. Most vegan diets consist of lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grain foods, nuts and seeds. Being vegetarian means not eating meat, fish or poultry. However vegans avoid animal products too such as milk, eggs and honey. . Becoming a vegan is a very healthy lifestyle and can have many benefits: . It can prevent the risk of heart disease and reduce the risk of cancer . It helps with weight loss . Gives you clearer skin . Strong bones . You will live longer (increases your chances!) . You will have more energy! .Animal friendly (ten billion animals are slaughtered each year for human

consumption). Many Restaurants now have a vegan menu too, which makes it easier for you to go out with friends and family and still stick to the lifestyle. Celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres and Carrie Underwood are vegans, along with other celebs such as Russell Brand too. Being vegan is becoming more and more popular worldwide and is ideal for anyone who wants to lose weight safely, or become healthier. Words by: Jasmin Woodward

Something Different For Your Palates? Have you ever heard of a healthy cake? A cliché automatically springs to mind: “a minute on the lips a lifetime on the hips”; the ultimate deterrent separating us from sweet treats. Having your cake and eating it without the regret, has never been easier. Try Bake Eden, where eating natural is the only way forward. Their slogan says it all “eat different, eat natural”. Bake Eden products consist of only four key ingredients plus the use of the unique combination of herbs and accompaniment in that particular cake. With interesting concoctions of balsamic beetroot and chocolate, or lemon and thyme your palates will definitely remain intrigued with each bite. We recommend the parsnip, apricot and ginger cake or the orange and rosemary (with a hint of garlic) flavour cakes. Words : @JMRevers

HEALTH

The Great British Booze Binge Jacqueline Kilikita investigates binge drinking and the effects it has on women.

I

magine this scenario: You can barely open your eyes but feel the room spinning. Your dress is torn and your heels are broken. It’s then, that you realise you don’t know where your keys, phone, purse or ID are, and that feeling of nausea isn’t just caused by the fear that you may have embarrassed yourself last night. Does it sound familiar? It should do, because we’ve probably all been there. It’s a common misconception that women are responsible when it comes to alcohol consumption, what with the dangerous new ‘necknominate’ trend that sees people downing a stomach churning concoction of spirits in as little time as possible. In fact, a recent survey has staggeringly revealed that thousands more women are being hospitalised each year, due to drinking unsafe amounts, compared to men; over a two year period 2,400 more girls than boys were treated for alcohol related injuries that put their lives in severe jeopardy. Amor Magazine was alarmed to learn that for women, drinking over 6 units of alcohol a week is actually considered bingeing by hospitals across the UK, but on nights out,

14 Amor Autumn 2014

many of us consume that in a space of around five hours. Worryingly, 41% of university students we interviewed admitted to binge drinking with their peers and a further 70% of female students confessed that they had had unprotected sex with strangers when drunk. But the piece of information that really hit a nerve was that a shocking 90% of campus rapes happen when female victims are highly intoxicated. It’s a known fact that alcohol is a suppressant

"I'm lucky to be alive." 'Pre drinks' are the norm at any UK university, where students will drink on the cheap before heading out to a club to finish the night off. But for Georgia, 20, what was supposed to be an enjoyable evening ,was ruined when she woke up in a hospital bed, hooked to a drip, with a total memory blank. "I had my drink

spiked with copious amounts of alcohol," she says." Admittedly, I didn't really have my wits about me as I was drinking a fair amount to begin with but I should have acknowledged the dangers around me. I'm lucky no-one abused me in my drunken state but I'm also very lucky to be alive."

which means it can dull your senses and decrease awareness and this only serves to highlight that your personal safety is at risk even more so when you have had a drink. But it’s not only during a state of intoxication that you are exposed to dangers, because research by Cosmopolitan US has found that hangovers mean you are 30% more likely to make mistakes in everyday life. You can also expect a scary 5-10% drop in memory. There are so many health implications to excessive drinking that the government has recently called for a rise in the prices of cheap alcohol. Dr Paul Southern, a consultant at Bradford’s Royal Infirmary informed us that a number of people, especially women, are dying in their early twenties from things such as liver disease or, sadly, choking on their own vomit whilst in a state of pure intoxication. There are even concerns that binge drinking can lead to further complications, with medical research by Drink Aware revealing that 1 in 5 breast cancers are linked to alcohol. We also can’t forget the physical implications of alcohol which dry out the skin and can be the cause of wrinkles. So don’t forget to stay hydrated whilst on that dance floor as well as the next day when you can feel that hangover kicking in. Excessive drinking also leads to weight gain amongst twenty something females, with gynaecologists across the UK referring to alcohol as ‘liquid fat’. So just how do you avoid overdoing it? Jenny Fauston, director of the Suzy Lamplugh trust suggests that we keep a “mental note” on the amount

we are drinking to avoid that dreaded ‘boozing black out’ which can lead to sexual abuse or even death. She also recommends alternating between alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks on nights out to regulate your drinking patterns. Another tip is to ‘stay clear.’ Not of alcohol in general, if you don’t want to, but by sticking to clear spirits. Darker drinks such as brandy or red wine contain toxins called ‘congeners’ which are often responsible for that ‘can’t move and if I do, I will vomit’ hangovers after a messy night on the tiles! Doctors and campaigners reiterate that it’s all about being aware of exactly how much you are drinking. So next time you’re planning a boozy get together or even if you’re just looking forward to a couple of ‘harmless’ glasses of wine after a busy week, make sure you know the facts and don’t let your responsibilities slide.

fter a Summer of strolling in the park and lazing on the beach our skin has been exposed to a lot of sunlight. Long bouts of the sun’s rays means that our skin is prone to damage, not to mention contact with chlorinated pools and saltwater oceans. Burnt skin becomes flaky and rough in texture, whilst dehydrated skin is tense and tight. So, naturally this Autumn, we’re all looking for ways to rehydrate our skin. But just how far are we prepared to go to make the necessary repairs to our body? In recent years we’ve been bombarded the rich and famous! with a whole host of increasingly bizarre For something a little less celebrity treatments. Whereas, Kim Kardashian favours Normaderm Hydrating Care the infamous ‘vampire facial’, a skincare (£24). treatment that involves re-injecting blood from the patient under the skin to achieve a healthy glow and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Even the Royal family have resorted to unusual treatments with Kate Middleton being said to use a bee venom mask from time to time. However, nothing beats Victoria Beckham’s bizarre bird poo facial. Made from sterilised nightingale bird excrement, the treatment is said to contain enzymes which act as an effective skin cleanser whilst brightening your complexion – eek! As effective as these treatments may be, they come at a very high price - one session can set you back from £130 to £600. Perhaps these are better left to be tried and tested by

Siane Mullings explores why hair salons are regularly dismissing clients with natural, Afro-Caribbean hair.

H

air salons are a place of transformation and new beginnings but there’s also an age-old line ironically exclaimed by most hairdressers; “We don’t do African hair”. This issue has become prevalent with the rise of more women adopting the natural look and this beauty trend has revealed the miseducation of both mainstream and AfricanCaribbean hair salons. Rebekah, 23, from London suggests that many salons are ignorant to the variety of different hair types. She says. “Since

24 Amor Autumn 2014

going natural, I have not gone to a hairdresser. Black hair salons have a lack of knowledge about black hair.” And mainstream salons are beginning to leave a sour taste in women’s mouths as Serina, 23 knows all too well. “I intended to get my hair cut, they had a specific hair dresser to do Afro Caribbean hair” she says. “I wasn't offered the option of having my hair cut by another hair dresser and I felt this was odd because a cut isn't a special ethnic requirement - it's basic hair care.”

Shockingly, the lack of options even leads to cancellations on the hair dresser’s part as Rebekah tells Amor that her hair appointment was rescheduled even after she had booked in advance. She reveals that she was left waiting a total of 7 hours for a treatment because the specialist stylist was apparently unavailable. Understandably there’s so much pressure put on a specialist stylist yet it’s frustrating for the client. I

"Giving a black client's hair a once over can come across as discriminatory." once walked into a ‘no appointment necessary’ salon to be told they couldn’t do my hair, despite it being between 2a and 2c in texture. Not all African/Caribbean descendants have the same hair; we are a product of our genetics; a la Angelina Jolie’s full lips, or Steve McCurry’s “Afghan girl” documenting Sharbat Gula’s showstopping green eyes. A person’s hair type isn’t a viable excuse to dismiss them, so we can conclude that it boils

down to a lack of education. After enquiring about a course, a well-known hair academy proved the point, stating: “Our course does not cover Afro Caribbean

"A person's hair type isn't a viable excuse to dismiss them." hair, however you will learn the theory behind the different ethnic hair types”. Sadly, this isn’t good enough. Stuart H, author of salon bible, Hairdressing says, “An experienced stylist can tell a lot about a client’s hair just by looking at it” but giving a client a once over, without taking the time to engage with a client’s hair can come across as discriminatory. In light of this comment, there is such a rich and vibrant history behind AfroCaribbean, natural hair and with the right knowledge, stylists may end up with a boost of confidence whilst shaking off a heavy stigma. African, Caucasian or Asian, our hair puts forth a story and it should be a stylist’s mission to understand it in order to create a new chapter within the world of hairdressing.

Black Hair –--Weave!!!! ! W

e have all been there. When we have stayed an extra 20-30 minutes with hair straighteners and a slick brush, trying to make our sew-in weave look as neat and the leave out hair appear as realistic as possible! It is really easy to take for granted the effort required for the constant ‘Salon Fresh Hair’ look as opposed to the bad version of ‘I woke up like this’. Our Beauty Editor, Patricia is providing you Amorelles with some quick tips on how to maintain your virgin hair extensions!

Never ever 1the.underestimate power of a headscarf.

It is old-fashioned but it still works ladies! Try not to pack your hair back with a tight hairband before a headscarf as this creates unnecessary kinks in your hair making it harder to straighten in the morning! Wrap the

26 Amor Autumn 2014

hair around your head and stick some tights on top!

Wash and condition your weave 2.often so the hair has a natural shine.

Also try and stay away from putting a lot of hair creams on the virgin hair as it just looks too greasy! When you wash your hair, make sure you thoroughly rinse out your edges. This way all the hair products do not get clogged up in your side hair.

Need to get your leave out hair to lie 3.flat? Tie a scarf/bandana over your hair (with the knot underneath the weave so you do not get kinks half way down your hair). Leave it tied for at least 20 minutes before you leave the house – sorted!

. Protecting your own hair is just as 4 important as protecting the virgin hair extensions.

Be sure to spray some heat protector on each small section of hair before straightening it. This will guarantee your hair looks fresh and stays straight for a longer period of time. Our favourite heat protector right now is TRESemme Heat Defence Styling Spray 300ml. Words: Beauty Editor, Patricia Obaro Odje

REAL TECHNIQUES We were given a sneak peak of their latest collection called ‘Nic’s Picks’ and we are totally in love! All five brushes are able to create a complete makeup look. The quality of their brushes never cease to amaze us, we cannot wait for this collection to be out next month. We were also able to interview them about their journey and they gave advice to those wanting to start their own beauty company. The interview is online now in our Hair/Beauty section – check it out. www.realtechniques.com

VIXEN TRESSES UK This lovely hair extensions company sent us some hair for a full review. The quality of their hair is lovely, and the creativity of their hair colours makes them very unique! We have developed a strong rapport with them and are now directly affiliated. Looking forward to collaborating on more projects – exciting! www.vixentressesuk.com

Editor’s Pick

Welcome to the first Editor’s Pick! Each week there will be a continuous ‘Editor’s Pick’ feature online which will include a beauty company that Amor has loved using for that week. Companies could be specialising in anything beauty related such as: Makeup (Products, Makeovers, Brushes,); Hair (Hairdressing, Extensions); Beauty (Skincare, Spa). Here are this season’s best picks... NANSHY We have fallen in love with the precision of the small brushes and the thickness of the soft foundation brush. Our favourite brush is the oval top wide foundation brush as it was easy to apply under-eye concealer when highlighting and contouring. The products are able to spread easily without creating harsh lines (which is a complete NO NO for makeup girlies). The presentation of the Luxury Brush Set was neat and lovely – packaging is always key when impressing beauty lovers! www.nanshy.com

MOXI MAKEUP We were sent a few makeup brushes from MOXI makeup. They have featured in quite a few other publications so it was intriguing to see if our views would be the same. We were pleasantly surprised! Our favourite brushes are the stippling brush and small precision lip brush. The stippling brush feels smooth, relaxing and does not get clogged with product easily. Their lip brush makes lipstick application so much more straight forward! www.moximakeup.com

EYE OF HORUS We tested out Eye of Horus black felt tip liner. It came in luxury black and gold packaging and lasted for a long time. The bold colour and duration of the liner means it has definitely won us over as one of the good quality eyeliners! www.eyeofhorus.uk.com

RUNWAY TABOO?

Hannah Whiting questions why plus size models are living in the shadows of the fashion industry.

34 Amor Autumn 2014

P

lus-size modelling with its' confident willingness has recently barged its way into the limelight, relentlessly trying to take down all of its competitors. Not only have we started to see the image of a fuller body in editorials, campaigns and magazine spreads, but it seeks to take reign over the 'skinny' stereotype that see it as the 'normal' representation of the female body. Whether or not it's a true refelction, plus size modelling has been a topic of controversy for some time now. But despite larger models

becoming more and more prominent in other areas of the fashion industry, we must question - where are they on the runways? Many turn blind eye to it, or accept it for what it is. Revolution or not, plus-size modelling still remains a taboo on the catwalks and in high-end fashion, except of course, at Full Figured Fashion Week. Instead of seeing a curvier figure wearing the clothes we all love and projecting a realistic image, we are only ever graced with size four models strutting around. What we have to ask ourselves is, why? Is it only a matter of

time until the plus-size industry dominates the runways, or will people only ever entertain the idea of diversity for argument’s sake? The fuller figure has created such a strong niche as of late but why aren't all body types and shapes not being celebrated on the catwalks? Perhaps it is a feminist stance that strengthens my opinion, but I long for the day I open Vogue, and see a more realistic figure posing for old friends like Chanel and Balenciaga. Yet, is it only a dream or is the change soon to come? I know which side I'll be supporting.

ove over Suri Cruise, there is a new fashionista dominating the kids section. Out of all the celebrity babies, Amor has knighted North West as the best dressed. Since her birth she has been lavished with all things designer from Lanvin to Alexander Wang. Jealous much? We certainly are. When you're a Celebrity baby you fall into two categories: “lavishly spoilt” or the “free spirit”. The first means their parents buy the best designers and dress them in the cutest styles that make their babies look like they star in a Burberry Ad. While the latter are those artsy parents

who decide to let their babies choose whatever they want. Baby North has been snapped wearing the cutest outfits a baby can, and what would you expect from self proclaimed style icons Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, who always make headlines with their outfits, good or bad. Baby North will definitely get the best. Not many babies can say they have been in Vogue Magazine, and Givenchy designer Ricardo Tisci has even held her. She is knotting those fashion ties early. I’m excited to see where her style will go in the years to come. Will it be carefully crafted and put together

or will she come into her own style like tomboy chic, Shiloh Jolie Pitt? We'll have to wait and see.

ere at Amor Magazine, we have a special place in our hearts for inspirational young women, and admire them with utmost respect and pride. One such individual is Laya Lewis, who is best known for her role as ‘Liv’ in the fifth and sixth seasons of British drama, ‘Skins’. Post-Skins life, for Laya, has featured a myriad of activities. Having starred in Emeli Sandé’s narrative-driven music video for ‘My Kind of Love’, Laya is now progressing into the filmic field, preparing to play the lead role in Cass Pennant’s ‘Beverley’. Laya was studying for her A-Levels when the opportunity to be in ‘Skins’ arose. Encouraged by her teacher at her performing arts college, she went ahead and auditioned. “What did I have to lose?,” she very correctly points out in her interview with Amor’s very own Mya Savannah. It was this fearlessness and willingness to embrace opportunity that provided

Laya with the very springboard she needed to kick-start her career in the media and showbiz industries. Laya has an easygoing, casual, yet sophisticated air about her that makes her both intriguing and approachable. Her bold lipstick, nose ring and iconic hairstyle all create a distinct persona, but it is her friendliness that seems to stand out above the fashion, which supposedly is a rare quality in people who have achieved such success. “You do quite a lot,” says Lewis, “but then you think, have I?” From this, one gets the impression that she is someone who aims high, regardless of setbacks. She clearly is not afraid to have her dreams broken because she has that kind of relentless determination to push herself outside of her comfort zone on a daily basis. To return to Laya’s upcoming project, ‘Beverley,’ the opportunity to play the lead role of a mixed-race girl growing up in Leicester has provided her with the chance to explore what she calls

“Do you feel like you have any similarities to her (Beverley)?” Laya: “Oh yeah – loads! She’s proper tough, doesn’t Mya Amor’s official presenter:

ALBUM REVIEWS Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence

interesting listen. Words : Josh Chowa

A

fter performing at KimYe’s prewedding party, Lana Del Rey’s second album has arrived, produced by Black Keys guitarist Dan Auerbach. ‘Sad Girl’ is about a mistress who acknowledges her lifestyle isn’t for everyone, but is perfect for her - “Being a mistress on the side / It might not appeal to fools like you / Creeping around on the side / Would not be something you would do.” Lana walks the thin line between strength and vulnerability as only she can in ‘Pretty When You Cry’. Her vocals purposefully sound broken and her attitude less guarded. The last lines sum up the meaning concisely, “I’m stronger than all my men / Except for you,” meaning while she’s been the stronger one in her past relationships, this one man has made her more vulnerable than she has ever been. ‘Old Money’ takes the album to a sedated and tranquil place. With no drums to assist her on this song, she carries it with her atmospheric and full vocals. “My father’s love was always strong, My mother’s glamour lives on and on, yet still inside I felt alone for reasons unknown to me.” Realising while there are people who love her, the grey cloud of loneliness still follows her. The feeling of being lonely is present throughout ‘Ultraviolence’, the stories are told using layered vocals and heavy ethereal instrumentation. The protagonist’s story is still the same; loneliness and glamour are always a part of Lana’s journey. She is always original which makes this album an

Ed Sheeran - x ALBUM

E

d Sheeran releases his second album titled “X”, pronounced multiply. The British singer worked with Pharrell and legendary producer Rick Rubin on a couple of tracks for this album. After the success of his debut, ‘+,’ the follow up is a respectable contender for one of the best album of 2014. The album starts off with a pop folk song titled “One,” about his ex-girlfriend Alice who has been the muse for previous songs on his “+” album. “Sing” a Pharrell assisted track has a more distinctive sound than his usual songs, although this doesn’t change the fact that this is an obvious hit, debuting at number 1 and becoming his first top charting single in the UK. “Don’t” the song allegedly written about Ellie Goulding, a girl who had affair with his friend. Co-produced by Benny Blanco and Rick Rubin the scathing track sees

Ed Sheeran balancing Hip-Hop cadences with pop folk melodies and he manages to coherently pull it off. Even though this album sounds like a perfect mix between Timberlake’s “Justified” album and Jason Mraz at his most mainstream, Ed Sheeran’s personality brilliantly shines throughout. With songs like “Thinking Out Loud” he glowingly displays his vocal and song writing abilities, the track shows the core of Ed Sheeran and he presents his passion in an assertive but non aggressive manner. Ed Sheeran returns with more edge, a brilliant album by a free spirit who has experienced all of the highs and lows of love. Words : Josh Chowa

MUSIC

Izzy Bizu I

f you haven’t heard of the name Izzy Bizu yet, then here is where you can find out all about her...The talented singer/songwriter from Hailing, West London, is having a buzzing impact on the UK music scene. The 20-year-old soulful Jazz singer is currently recording with ‘I Luv Live’ and last year saw the release of her EP “Coolbeanz,” an acoustic rough base of what’s more to come from Izzy. Describing her EP as a bitter sweet sound, Izzy said “It’s like a diary almost, I just say how I feel.” Izzy has seen success with her hit ‘White Tiger’ and last September she supported Sam Smith on his UK tour travelling to Manchester, Bristol, London, and Glasgow. Izzy is currently working on her first album which she is hoping to release next year. Her main aim has been writing her music, growing, and learning from experiences. Izzy is keen to develop herself as an independent artist before signing to a major label. Known as ‘Hurricane Bizu’ by her friends here’s what she had to say when we caught up with her; Izzy, do you find it easy to express your thoughts and feelings through your writing? “It’s ok, it is hard at times but I generally like to write about my experiences, my music can be quite dark. I find it hard when people listen to my music and then ask me questions about the experiences that i am expressing, I’m quite a shy person so I find that hard.” What are your inspirations behind your music?

60 Amor Autmun 2014

“I love jazz music so people like Ella Fitzgerald and James Brown. I also love Amy Winehouse, I would say her conversational style of writing has influenced the way I write. I also listen to a lot of Selah Sue who is a Belgian singer, I love her style.” What was it like to support Sam Smith on tour? “It was amazing, Sam is such a lovely guy. I really enjoyed performing for crowds outside of London, even though they had never heard of me, they were buzzing and even asked me to perform an additional song in Bristol.” Why do your friends call you Hurricane Bizu? “Because I’m always getting lost or falling over, I’m a nightmare!” To keep up to date on Izzy’s music and gigs follow her on Twitter @IzzyBizu Words : Elisha Ricketts

RESTAURANT REVIEW : Paramount

pon arrival we were greeted with an ugly office-block-esque monstrosity that towered ominously above building works, I must say, we wondered whether Google maps had deceived us. The first glimpse of the restaurant on 32nd floor, had me beaming from ear to ear and sighing with relief. The four stars were not a misprint - classy, modern and polished. The upstairs bar has 360 degree panoramic views of London in its perfect urban glory. It’s perfect for photo opportunities, tourists, special occasions, or even simply a catch up but with a top class ambience, quick table service, and a delicious selection of cocktails. All in all, the ambience of the place is deceptive from the outside, but plush

with a chilled out vibe. It’s busy, but it’s one of the most memorable sunsets I’ve seen as of yet so it’s understandable why. The actual value of the place is surprising; if you were to check out the bar and restaurant menu, it isn’t a place that charge thirty quid for a cracker and an olive. It’s a place suited for everyone. Words: Rachael Kitson

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

B

lack history month is an annual observance in the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada, for the remembrance of the important people and events in the history of the African Diaspora, that have influenced and have shaped today’s society. From the 16th-19th Century, Africans were transported from their homes via the transatlantic slave trade which took place across the Atlantic Ocean. Ship owners considered the slaves as they would cargo; therefore they

were transported as quickly and as cheaply as possible and many slaves died on board these ships in the harsh conditions they were forced to endure. The first Africans imported to the English colonies were classified as ‘Indentured Servants’ a term which refers to voluntary labour whereby people were paid for their passage to the new world by working for an employer for a number of years whereby after this period they would be free to work for themselves. However, by the middle of 17th century slavery had hardened and as

a racial caste slaves and their children became the legal property of their owners, any children born to slave mothers also became slaves. Although celebrated and embraced across the globe, black history month has been widely criticised, sparking the debate over the fairness of a month dedicated to the history of one race. Many believe that highlighting black history separately from history all together is causing further segregation within ethnic communities. Morgan Freeman a critic of black history month quoted "I don't want a black history month, black history is American history". Supporters of black history month believe the celebration is not to segregate black

people but rather functions to highlight the overlooked accomplishments of key figures throughout the history. There are many reasons behind the celebration and relevance of black history month, however, the ultimate goal of black history is to raise awareness, for remembrance, and to highlight the fight for racial equality for

"Many believe that highlighting black history separately is causing further segregation." every race. Slavery should not determine black history, even though it played a huge part and has affected the world that we live in today. It was merely an interruption in the

history of black people. It's a chance to remember freedom fighters such as Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and Malcolm X, who stood up and made a difference to the history of black people. So, pay a tribute this October by taking part in the celebrations for black history month. racial equality is a fight that continues into 2014, we as a society, have a responsibility to the next generation of children to continue the foundation of hard work that was laid by those before us. LEADING LADY This issue's Leading Lady, Becky White, founder of OneSixEight:Fitness talks to Amor about success, courage and being genuine. Words: Jacqueline Kilikita “I could name so many people who said I could never make it, so I thought, I’m going to show them that I can!” declares Becky White, (pictured left), founder of OneSixEight:Fitness, a get-fit-have-fun business that has taken the exercise industry by storm. At just 24, Becky, originally from Skegness, already has a string of fitness DVD’s, a WOW award from the founder of Ann Summers, Jacqueline Gold, and a whole list of satisfied and now fitness savvy clients under her designer belt. Her business aims to encourage individuals from all walks of life to keep fit by introducing aerobics routines using apparatus such as mini trampolines, into workout sessions that they find difficult to fit around busy schedules. But does the success feel real? “I really have come from nothing. I started the business in my second year at Loughborough University and once I realised there was another world out there, I wanted

And it’s Becky's drive " I really have that astounds, as she lives by the mantra, ‘Don’t ask, come from don’t get.’ Like all young nothing." women rearing for success she reiterates that it really This breed of rearing young does pay to ask for what you female entrepreneurs is want otherwise you’ll fade changing into the background.

"There are too many entrepreneurs, especially women, that aren’t inquisitive or motivated enough," she says. “I see a lot of young people who let nerves get in the way of what they want. Age is also a barrier for some people but I think these things are just excuses. There’s obviously something else that is stopping these people and they need to overcome that. I started my business at the age of 20; there really is no excuse not to be successful.” However, Becky goes on to explain that becoming a young female entrepreneur that everybody wants a piece of wasn’t always plain sailing. At just 20, she was threatened with court action as a result of an exercise DVD deal that turned sour. But Becky didn’t let that stop her, “At 20, I was naïve and it was a bit scary but I was more concerned that they’d stop me from doing what I wanted to do, rather than any fines. Money is money, but exercise is my passion and it made me more determined”. Becky is a breath of fresh air when it comes to corporate business and right now she believes that more should be done in schools to encourage young people, especially females, to believe that they can set up their own businesses.

Having given training sessions and talks to school children, she has seen firsthand the difficulties that young people face when wanting to set up their own businesses. She says, “We don’t have to grow up believing the status quo – we can change it. I

"I started my business at 20 - there is no excuse not to be successful." want people to see starting your own business as a perfectly logical thing to do – it’s not absurd as some might have us think.” Having trained over 10,000 people to get fit, one of those being the minister for women, Nicky

"Your body shape doesn't matter. I have to tell myself, 'Strong, not skinny.'" Morgan, Becky stresses the importance of fitness aside from body image which has dominated the media in recent years. She stresses, “Your shape does not matter. It’s about how you feel. I have to tell myself ‘strong not skinny.’”

For a 24 year old in business, Becky has a wise head on her shoulders and it's obvious that strength and success that defines Becky as a young female entrepreneur. She confesses, “I don’t like being told what to do or being watched over. I never really follow social norms and I believe that’s what constitutes success for today’s young women. We should all be courageous and that means feeling the fear and doing it anyway!” We totally agree with you there, Becky – girl power indeed!

AUTUMN ADVENTURES

Summer’s been and gone and you didn’t get a chance to embark on that holiday you kept meaning to book. But don’t worry, because Autumn is the perfect time to go on holiday for a great deal. Here are our top picks!

AMSTERDAM

Don’t let the rain put you off! The temperature will still be pleasant and there is plenty of sight-seeing to be done. Canal walks beneath beautiful Autumn trees and visiting the famous museums of Amsterdam are a must. Plus, October hosts Amsterdam’s Bokbier Festival, the city’s biggest beer fest. What more could you want?

TENERIFE Autumn weather in Tenerife is beautiful

and you can enjoy every aspect of the island in the same way you would in the Summer. Puerto de la Cruz is a brilliant place to be if you are looking for something a bit different. Sunbathe on a beach of black sand and check out the attractions for a traditional Spanish experience.

CYPRUS Cyprus can be unbearably

hot and humid in the height of Summer but in Autumn you can enjoy all that the beautiful island has to offer without this problem. Swim in the azure blue sea and hike through the range of awe-inspiring mountains before a tasty meze feast at a Cypriot tavern.

Amor Magazines Car of the Year 2014: Vauxhall Astra 1.4 VVT Turbo 16v

W

hen I was asked to test drive the new Vauxhall Astra for Amor Magazine, the thought of driving a car that was once seen as a Police magnet for speeding and other offences was not an encouraging start. But did you know that in the last 30 years the Astra has driven the highest sales for the brand in the UK? One of its main competitors that still stand today is the Volkswagen Golf. Vauxhall designed a smarter version with a major cabin facelift making this car a lot more attractive for the daily consumer. The car was delivered to us in Dublin as we prepared ourselves for a three hour drive to County Mayo on the West Coast of Ireland. The weather conditions were better than expected and we were greeted by a friendly Press Fleet Driver who was smiling with pride over the car he was about to deliver. You could see the excitement this man had in driving what he called, “Vauxhalls next big star”. Little did in know the statement this gentleman made at the beginning of our journey would be the quote I would use in my review. This car has gone from simplicity to an appealing choice to family hatchback buyers due to its large range of diesel and petrol engines as well as an infinite choice of trim levels. Check out the latest addition to the Astra family - the ultra efficient 1.6 litre TDCI 108 BHP Diesel. The interior design of this car is beautiful, simplistic as well as

stylish. The Astra is a very handsome carriage and has many similarities to that of its bigger brother the Insignia. Vauxhall provide all the Astra range with electric windows, air conditioning and an auxiliary-in socket as standard. We were driving the Limited Edition Model which came with matt alloys and a sharper interior. The only option we had on the vehicle was a GPS system (Navi 650) with a heavy price tag of £855.00. Bearing in mind though that this was our first time in Ireland and we were completely lost, this navigation system was simple to use and the guidance was fantastic, making our journey entirely stress free. The ergonomic sports front seats were comfortable and provided an additional safety and comfort. The majority of the drive was motorway however; we took the 1.4 VVT Turbo for a little hors piste spin in the hills of Ireland. Noise levels are low and the car is very responsive, it has to be said that the 1.4 litre Turbo is a little gutless and we could have used with the more powerful 1.6 litre engine which is worth paying extra for. The six speed gearbox is smooth and ensures great fuel economy even on the busiest of roads. The Astra is built to very high standards and comes with a lifetime warranty (100,000 miles). Vauxhall has made this available to all their new cars. Overall: The Astra is a very reliable and fun car to drive. It’s safe too having achieved a five-star Euro NCAP rating. Put to its test, the car delivers on every occasion. Vauxhalls main rival – the Golf has a new competitor in town. The all new Astra is not only a car; it’s a lifestyle and most importantly its Amor Magazine’s Car of the Year 2014! Words : Vladamir Wilson

At least, according those who use traditions and customs to control women and treat them like inanimate objects, stripping them of human rights and snatching their dreams and desires. Some Asian families become so obsessed with preserving their honour that they put their daughters through ordeals like forced marriages and honour-based violence. The extent to which this society perceives women to be a man’s object for sexual gratification became clear when images from Raj Shetye’s ‘Wrong Turn’ fashion photo shoot emerged, glamourising rape and trivializing sexual assault. The disturbing images portray a female model fighting male attackers on a bus, which is sickening when you realise that it had been inspired by the 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder of a medical student (dubbed ‘Nirbhaya’ or ‘fearless’) on a bus. The photographer has exploited this young girl’s misfortune and the suffering of countless women who have been through the trauma of rape for his own personal use and financial gain. The backlash caused were massive, with publications

like The Times of India calling the photo shoot ‘appalling’ and ‘disgusting’. Shetye, who has now taken down the offensive images from his website, protested and claimed that he was trying to shed light on the issue of violence against women and that he wanted to address the problems caused by the caste system in India. However, the tags that he put on his website - ‘HOT’, ‘SEXY’, ‘MALE’, ‘REVENGE’, ‘KIDNAP’, ‘LOVE’- suggested an attempt to turn rape into a sexual fixation. Is it any wonder that no one is ready to believe him? The appearance of the highfashion models in this photo shoot that we have become accustomed to seeing in glossy magazines, is turning rape into an acceptable, everyday image and is literally glossing over the true horror of this crime. horror of this crime and the life-long scars that these women have to live with. Amor spoke to Sajda Mughal from JAN Trust, an organisation that fights for human and women rights to help prevent atrocities such as forced marriages and violence against women. She told Amor: ‘Studies by UNICEF illustrate around 48% of women in South Asia will be forced to marry before the age of 18 and 42% in Africa respectively. The statistics are harrowing and indicate how prevalent the issue is for children and adults alike. Unfortunately the horror of rape and sexual violence also seem to persist despite the introduction of laws and measures across societies to curb these practices. These twin atrocities are not exclusive to

78 Amor Autumn 2014

the majority world but continue in Western states. Across the world we witness the oversexualisation of women and girls, these has undoubtedly permeated into societies that are perceived to be ‘traditional’ in outlook. A Google search can bring out countless images from renowned fashion houses, film productions such as the some of the Bollywood industry and corporate brands showcasing or glamourising rape scenarios to bolster sales and popularity of their brand. Statistics support the fact that most women including in India tend to know their perpetrator, without external help from agencies and law enforcement it becomes nigh on impossible to report a sexual crime and upholding justice. Sadly the caste system in India can pave the way for certain discriminatory practices to go unpunished. Mainstream media is however, beginning to highlight these cases and those of rape across India – this is a powerful way to document atrocities, educate masses and challenge mindsets.’ On the 15th of August, India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, used his first Independence Day speech to address the issue of rape, following a string of high-profile sexual attacks on women.

‘Our heads hang in shame when we hear about rapes’, he said. ‘When a daughter steps out, parents demand to know where she is going. But when a son returns home, does anyone dare ask where he is coming from? He might have been with the wrong people, doing wrong things. After all, a rapist is also somebody’s son.’ The prime minister’s speech has certainly pressed for changes in cultural attitudes but because of the deep-rooted prejudice against women and high tolerance for sexual violence that has plagued India for generations, this is unlikely to happen overnight. Such cases still go unreported and many rape victims are stigmatised and rejected by society for being impure. It’s time to stop chastising the women of India and point the finger to the perpetrator for a change.

I’ve Got the Power: Why A Healthy Mindset is Key to Success Words : Yazmin Joy Vigus @yazminjoy | aliljoy.com

I

’ve been reading about the laws of attraction recently. The idea that the universe conspires to give you what you ask for. Give me a muffin, give me a muffin, give me a muffin. No muffin. I’ll try again later. The laws of attraction teaches us that each of us have power over our own destinies and it is a concept that has been used by some of the world’s most infamous people.

‘Nothing can come into your experience unless you summon it through persistent thoughts’. Rhonda Byrne, Author of The Secret While hard work is often the key to success, it is psychological strength that gives you the ability to stay focused and handle setbacks on the journey to the top. As Dr. Venice J. Bloodworth suggests in her

Amor Autumn 2014 79

LIFESTYLE book Key to Yourself: ‘We are the products of our prevailing habits of thought’. We reap what we sow. Why is this important? Because thoughts manifest into reality, which is why having a healthy and focused mindset is pivotal to achieving long term success. From CEOs to politicians, inventors to film stars, successful people understand the power of mental endurance when striving for the top. Winning athletes are known to spend time not only physically training but investing time in psychological preparation. A winning mentality keeps your goals aligned and your attention sharp under pressure. Psychologists refer to this as Mental Toughness which constitutes the four C’s: control, commitment, challenge and confidence. To be a winner you’ve got to think like a winner! So how does this apply to the average Joe? Each of us have the ability to use the laws of attraction to create happiness and success in our lives. Here are three ways to flex that mental muscle and develop

80 Amor Autumn 2014

psychological strength.

Visualisation Visualisation is a technique used by many successful people in the early stages of their careers. It’s about creating a picture in your mind and consciously meditating on where you want to be in your future. After all, it’s hard to plan a journey if you don’t know your destination. The idea is that you build a mental picture of where you want to be into your subconscious. Of course you need to work hard too, but visualisation is about tuning your mind and energy towards your ultimate goal so the right actions can follow.

Gratitude No-one likes a whiner. The laws of attraction state that you get out what you put in. For instance if you are constantly worrying and thinking about what you DON’T have, you are attracting

more negativity in your life. To shift your thinking put your energy into acknowledging the things you DO have. Keep a gratitude journal and every morning write down 3 things you are grateful for. I am grateful for this new day. I am grateful for my friends. I am grateful for the new series of Sherlock... Your emotional state effects your professional and personal relationships so giving out an energy of gratification makes you a pretty darn awesome person to be around and will make people wanna work with you!

Affirmations I’m such a loser. I’m fat. I’m not smart enough. My boobs are too small. Stop, stop, stop lady! Affirmations are about feeding yourself words of encouragement. You see, what you think about yourself moonbeams right out of you and effects the way others see you, which reflects how they treat you and then feeds back into how you see yourself. The thing is, it all begins with you! If you are constantly feeding yourself negativity you are just painting an unflattering picture of yourself, which is kind of like giving yourself a giant slap in the face. Positive affirmations are important, so say them daily and say them loud. I am healthy. I am strong. I am beautiful. I am wealthy. Even if they are not true say them anyway. If you are feeling sick - say you’re strong. If you’re broke - tell yourself you’re wealthy. This is about declaring your greatness and letting it manifest into your reality.

‘You get what you put out, so you might as well think positively, focus on visualising what you want... and send the universe your good intentions so that it can send them right back’. Sophia Amoruso, Founder and CEO of Nasty Gal, Author of #GIRLBOSS

Sometimes the pressure of life can feel overwhelming, dreams can feel more like burdens and you are struggling to see past the monotony of everyday life. But the secret to long term success is all about developing mental endurance so you can keep up the good work. If you can think it, you can do it. You’ve got the power!

Is a mortgage buddy for you? Words : Andrew Boast, co-founder of Shareamortgage.com

riendship is a term people use all the time, but it means very different things to different people. Some may reserve the word ‘friend’ for a small group of people they can count on one hand, whereas others may class 1,000s of connections made through social networks as their ‘friends’.

But how many ‘friends’ would be willing to share the biggest financial commitment of their lives? Surprisingly, quite a few. It’s very popular now for first time buyers to boost their buying power by looking to their friends for a ‘mortgage buddy’. In fact, some mortgage lenders actively advertise buddying up with friends and family to make buying a home more affordable. Many first time buyers look towards co-ownership as a mutually benefiting

business arrangement where they can get onto the property ladder, benefit from an increase in property value and back up the arrangement with a legally binding document such as Shared Ownership Protection. For many, sharing a mortgage is the only way they can afford to buy. It allows first time buyers to get a foot on the property ladder and pay into something that is for them, rather than wasting money renting and paying off someone else’s mortgage. If you are considering sharing a mortgage you need to think seriously about the pros and cons for you as an individual and agree all the ‘rules’ upfront. People’s situations inevitably change, so buyers need to be prepared for this, and should discuss as many eventualities as possible.

So do you have a friend you’d share a mortgage with? Here are five things you should think about if you are considering it.

1 Sharing a mortgage isn’t for life

. It’s best to look at sharing a mortgage in the same way as a business relationship. You decide how the business is going to run and agree a clear ‘exit’ point when you are going to sell. As in a business, you share any increase or decrease in the property value and with a clear exit strategy, co-owners can work towards this date. Usually most mortgage buddies will move on after a few years taking any increase in property value and buy a place on their own, or with their love interest. So when you are choosing a mortgage buddy, don’t think, ‘can I live with them forever?’ Think, ‘can I live with you for a few years while I get myself on the property ladder?’

2 Stay secure and in control

. People have been safely meeting new people on dating websites for years; in fact they estimate 50% of new relationships will be found this way within 20 years. However, be sure never to give out any personal

information to anyone straight away. If you are using online sites such as Shareamortgage.com to find a buddy, make sure you protect your personal details by staying within these sites. Communicate with potential buddies by using the secure platform provided and only once you are ready, pass on your mobile number to talk to them. Don’t feel rushed into doing anything you don’t want to do.

3 Shared Ownership Protection

. Buying a home requires a lot of thought and having a legal document to protect co-owners is incredibly important. As with anything, you never need something until you really need it. When you find your perfect mortgage buddy, make sure to talk about how you are going to live together, set down house rules and document them. A legal document focused on co-ownership is the Shared Ownership Protection available from Shareamortgage.com.

4 Be flexible

. You may not be able to afford the palace you initially dreamed of, or live on the exact road you wanted so it’s always a good idea to be open to new ideas and different options. Make sure you take the time to discuss what you want, as well as

listening to those of your mortgage buddy. Be clear on what is acceptable to you and what is not. However, just remember, without each other you wouldn’t be able to buy a property.

5 Stay on top of your finances . From the outset you both need to be clear on what you can afford, not only as a deposit but in terms of the ongoing maintenance of the property. Make sure you both have your finances in order and that you can afford the bills.

You need to be fully aware of each other’s financial situation before committing to purchasing a property together. Remember, no lies or secrets. They will only come back to haunt you later. Buying a property is an exciting time. You’ll never forget the feeling of taking down the ‘for sale’ sign and enjoying sleeping in your own home for the first time. Sharing that elation is now commonplace and means you’ll be able to get onto the property ladder sooner, rather than later.
