PRIMARY CARE AFTER BREAST CANCER SURGERY Surgery is usually the main component of breast cancer treatment. In recent years, breast-conserving surgery has become the standard procedure. Nevertheless, the treatment options vary greatly, depending on the developmental stage of the disease.

Proportion of mastectomies has decreased to 30% with 70% of women undergoing breastconserving treatments.

AMOENAʼS PRIMARY CARE Amoena is aware of the special circumstances during this time and has developed bras especially for the first phase after the operation – to provide individual care for women according to their needs. Compression garments are designed to keep the operated breast(s) immobile and/or stabilised during the healing phase after breast surgery.

It is also possible that the loss of the breast can lead to poor posture of the upper spine and shoulders as the body compensates for the often one-sided weight loss. Muscle tension and shortening can be the result. In this case, a soft primary care form can be inserted into the special bra shortly after the operation.

SCAR CARE AFTER AN OPERATION Every surgical intervention leaves wounds and thus traces on the skin. Targeted scar therapy may be necessary in some cases to improve the visibility and texture of scars. Which approach of scar therapy is suitable depends on the wound healing process and the scar itself. If the regenerative healing process is disturbed, hyperthrophic or keloids scars may occur. The result of the scar therapy depends on various factors, such as the size and type of scar, as well as the individual scar conditions. In all areas of plastic surgery (e.g. reconstructive surgery), scars can be treated after the wound is completely closed.

There are different treatment options within scar therapy: 1 The benefits for the patient are:

• Compression therapy • Silicone therapy • Physiotherapy and occupational therapy • Ointments and scar care products • Invasive options such as kyrotherapy, laser therapy, injections, microneedling or various surgical approaches

• Protection of the delicate scar tissue • Significant reduction of itching • Pain relief • Improvement in the appearance of the scar • Psychologically beneficial effect

Unfortunately, scars can’t be made invisible. However, it is possible to improve their appearance and function with the right therapy. The earlier this starts, the better, in order to achieve the best possible result. The appropriate therapy and treatment options will be selected by the attending physician. Even with “older” but still active scars, good results can be achieved with compression and silicone products.

LYMPHOEDEMA AFTER BREAST CANCER TREATMENT Our approach is to provide holistic care for women with breast cancer. After every breast surgery a post-operational swelling develops. Depending on the type of surgery and further treatment (e.g. breast cancer surgery with lymph node removal and/or radiotherapy), chronic lymphoedema may also develop. Many women develop secondary lymphoedema without even knowing it. Helping patients recognise these symptoms at an early stage and act accordingly is our biggest goal and gives the best chance to noticeably improve the lives of those affected. In the early stage I of edematization and for preventing the accumulation of fluid, compression bodysuits or compression bras are frequently used.1

AMOENAʼS LYMPH CARE The Amoena Lymph Care Concept is ideal for patients after breast cancer surgery with mild lymphatic disease in the thoracic and/or chest area. Our Lymph Care concept offers product solution that complement each other and make a contribution to holistic care.

The CuraLymph Comfort Products and certain Breast Care Textiles are designed to prevent blocking of the lymphatic drainage, which can be caused by pressure peaks or constrictions. Together with the Adapt Air or our lightweight breast forms, these products are suitable for patients with mild oedema. Our CuraLymph Compression products complement our portfolio to provide optimal patient care. Medical compression supports lymphatic drainage by increasing interstitial pressure. This is ideal where lymphoedema has developed in the thoracic wall and/or chest. External pressure, in combination with movement of the thoracic area, has a positive effect on reducing the protein-rich lymph, as this pressure activates the lymphangiomotor system.1

When to use CuraLymph compression products: Damage to the venous/lymphatic vascular function/structure of the thorax and/or mamma (e.g., postoperative/post-traumatic, congestion due to immobilisation) with mild to moderate swelling, mild to moderate risk of oedema, feeling of heaviness, oedema reduction and relief of discomfort and pain.

LYMPH CARE BREAST FORMS & SHAPERS In the case of lymphoedema, it is beneficial to minimise pressure on the shoulders to ensure lymphatic drainage is not impeded. Our lightweight breast forms are 25% or 40% lighter compared to normal breast forms. This means there is less weight on the straps of the bra, which prevents cutting in and helps ensure that lymphatic drainage isn‘t blocked. Lightweight breast forms are often preferred by women with thoracic lymphoedema following breast surgery.
