Fall Winter 2013 1

Editors' Note "Life is a mystery. I never expected to be involved in a fashion business." This thought came to my mind when we peeked into the portfolio of our favorite designer. This is about lifestyle, fashion and the way we live our lives. The third issue was made in collaboration with such designers and yarn makers Because it's so hot outside, we decided to start with a picture taken in -20 degrees Celsius. Welcome to the world of eternal autumn, where we never cease to miss woolly things.

Chickadee by Quince and Co. Sport / 5 ply, 100% Wool, 181 yards / 50 grams Quince has such diverse and beautiful colorways that it is always a challenge to pick just one. The yarn is tightly spun and gives great stitch definition, perfect for knitting cables. And of course, it's great for color knitting! I spent 2 hours in front of my Macbook imagining all the possibilities, a pleasant way to while away the time! Keito Date-O - a knitting picnic in a park Our friend, Cassie, owner of LYS Hitsujidama, came up with the superb idea of hosting a knitting picnic on a glorious, sunny afternoon in May. Having a picnic in itself is a great idea, but gathering and knitting under trees is exhilarating! In addition to almost 100 people, amirisu, other yarn stores and Keitodama magazine also participated. People brought their favorite projects and told stories. There were spinning wheels and raffles. Some people FO-ed during the picnic which added excitement to the event. Olga, the featured designer for this issue, also enjoyed picnic withus, just a few days before she left Japan. Wesharedher camera, so it's possible that many photos are by her. It seems people knit in public fairly often in the Western countries, but not at all in Japan. Knitting itself, let alone in public, invites the remark "how old ARE you?" Through fun events such as this, we hope we can grow big as a knitting community. Thank you Cassie for such a wonderful party!

My husband is in the US military and that naturally comes with lots of travel. When an opportunity appeared for us to live in Japan for several years we were very excited and moved here with lots of anticipation. I have been learning a bit about Japan and it’s culture prior to our move and I have always found it astounding as to knitting materials and design aesthetic that you guys come up with. Experience of 3.5 years has been unforgettable, we are just very sad that it has to come to an end. From being very different to a Westerner’s mind at first, Japan has become a second home that we were very reluctant to depart but looking forward to coming back!

Then ended up going back there very frequently. I remember how happy I felt when I was knitting on the beach with 100% wool during hottest summer months! Then online yarn stores started popping up slowly, so that helped my knitterly adventures.

Designer in Focus: Olga Buraya-Kefelian

amirisu: Knitting on an Italian beach in your bikinis
! So, what's your background? Did you study design or fashion before or after that? Olga: I have been educated as a linguist and a teacher of English. As I have mentioned my mom is a seamstress, so I have learnt a lot from watching her work and I have actually drafted some patterns for her as a teen and through that I have learnt construction of garments and draping. I have always been interested in fashion and I constantly keep up with the trend reports as I am always excited to see what is new in style.

Olga: From what I can remember my real first design was this pullover I attempted at in High school, made with leftover baby type acrylic yarn which was soft, but thin. I designed a striped and cabled pullover but it had a very loose gauge, so it was very stretchy and long. I suppose that was my phase of some punk dressing, only in lighter colors. Motivation for it was as a teenager wanting to have something new to wear and not having resources for patterns.

amirisu: How was your early experience of pattern design?

Olga: Designing for a pattern is absolutely different. It took years to perfect my writing style and learn some tricks. I know my first pattern was about 13 pages long and included row by row instructions. It terrified me and I still try to do better every time I write a new pattern.

Olga: Because I spend so much time to get my design right, I love all my patterns. Since I have been away for so long I will try to slowly catch up with some of my friends in the States, so I do enjoy social gatherings. Biking and hiking whenever I can. I am always knowledge hungry, so I want to continue learning about the vast world of knitting while teaching and sharing my knowledge with others. amirisu: We cannot wait to see more of your design, and hope to see you back in Japan many times in the future!

Yarn We Adore: Shibui Knits amirisu お気に入りの糞ブランドShibui Knits

When we were discussing the contents of this issue earlier this year, it only took us 10 seconds to decide which yarn maker we want to feature. We were unanimously picked Shibui Knits. They had sent us a box full of samples for issue #2, and each yarn was distinctively unique. In addition to the name "Shibui", some of the yarns are manufactured in Japan, which made us both very curious about the brand's connection to Japan. Here is our conversation with Kristin Ford, Director of Shibui Knits. All photos, except on page 40, by Shibui

amirisu: Would you please talk about how Shibui was born, and about the journey until today?

Shibui: When Darcy was operating Knit Purl, she noticed that a moderately priced hand-dyed sock yarn with good delivery was not easy to find. She researched various mills and built relationships and developed a product that met her high standards, developed the brand and label, and has since expanded the line to fill underserved area of the handknitting market.

Our current market directive is the belief that true fashion knitting is underserved; our focus is making a high level of design and quality fibers accessible to our customer base.

We try to infuse a bit of shibui in to everything we do; to create products and design that are poetic and complex.

Shibui: Darcy was visiting college friends in Tokyo before she started Shibui and KP; she took the train to the Ginza and found a handwoven bag that was hand dyed with persimmon. She loved it because it was earthy and elegant. Upon see the bag, her friend stated that it was “very Shibui”, and explained that it meant elegance with a touch of bitterness. We try to infuse a bit of shibui in to everything we do; to create products and design that are poetic and complex.

you have many kinds of beautiful yarns. How did that happen? How do you come up with ideas for new yarn base? Shibui: While Sock was our first yarn line, we realized that there were other areas of “white space” in the yarn market, and began to develop other lines that complemented our brand. With the advent of the Mix concept two years ago, we further defined what is special about our brand, and continue to add yarn lines that “play well” with each other.

When you are handknitting, you are really your own designer. amirisu: Could you please talk about your Shibui Mix series? What was the intention, and how does it work? The yarn cards and the total scheme are quite interesting. Shibui: We developed Mix to add another dimension to idea that, when you are handknitting, you are really your own designer. You can tweak the sleeve length, proportions, collar details of any pattern; you get to pick your own yarn; why not design your own yarn? It

makes design both democratic and accessible to the handknitting world. You can combine yarns to make something unique, with the properties you value in a sweater. From a business standpoint, it also makes it difficult for people to substitute other yarns and get the same sweater.....! amirisu: Coincidentally, it is actually very common for Japanese knitters to combine multiple yarns to get the same gauge, out of necessity. Until recently, it was not easy to buy good quality hand knitting yarns in Japan most of them used to be for weaving thus too thin. So I think the concept is a good fit for the Japanese market. The other interesting aspect of your products is color. Your color schemes are always very unique every season. Who pick new colors? Shibui: Jenny Trygg, who heads up our graphics department, develops a seasonal palette that will integrate well with our existing colors. We base our selections on Pantone fashion palettes, but narrow and refine our selections to create a wellrounded collection of colors. The unique thing about our yarns is that the color palette runs consistently throughout all (with the exception of Sock) of our yarn lines. This makes the Mix concept possible. amirisu: I heard there are 19 yarn stores in Portland, and knitting is very big not just among women but there are many men's knitting circles in town. What are the background and cultures that helped this to happen, do you think? Shibui: I’m not sure, but that’s awesome if that’s the case! We do have a lot of male customers at Knit Purl. Portland is an amazing hotbed of creativity as well as inclusiveness...it makes sense! amirisu: I visited Portland for the first time, and was

Idea. What to do with leftover yarns? Photos provided by nao

Rug hooking is the craft of making rugs with coarse fabric (usually wool scraps) and crochet hooks. Our dear friend and amirisu model (Issues 1 and 2), nao, teaches rug hooking in and outside of Tokyo. When she told us she can make use of any leftover yarn for her workshops, we got curious. (In fact, Meri gives her most of her leftover yarn from her projects.) nao taught herself the craft, and started teaching it last year. Being an avid crafter for most of her life, she has accumulated bits and pieces of yarn and fabric over the years. She finds rug hooking exciting because she can reinvent new lives for these leftovers. You can use as many colors or as few colors as you like, and the results are always unique. The good thing about hooking is that if you get tired of your project, you can decide to finish it there and then, turning it into a wall hanging or perhaps a drink coaster. If you have a stash problem like me, this might just be the solution for you. Why not try making a small piece? For more information about nao's WS, please visit her blog (in Japanese).

Autumn Walk

Words and photographs by Shari Altman (the art of seeing things) On a late autumn walk, I stop to notice the dark tree silhouettes against the bright blue sky. The sky always appears larger to me in the autumn without summer's green obscuring the view. I stop for awhile, content to be out in the cool air. My pace is less frantic than in the summer months, and I enjoy wandering down the dirt roads near my house. I listen for the barred owls, visit my neighbor's draft horses and soak up all of the changes that are taking place as the calendar moves toward winter. On my way back, I pick a few tomatillos from the plants that were planted haphazardly along the edge of the lawn in the wild overgrowth. They will be peeled from their papery skins, chopped finely and made into salsa verde. It will be one of the final treats from a garden that always serves us well.

Haapsalu Lace Shawl from Estonia Photographs and text by Izumi Ouchi ゚ストニアのハプサルレヌス 写真ずテキスト by 倧内いづみ

Have you ever heard of a lace shawl that can be pulled through a woman's ring? In a small Estonian town called Haapsalu are traditional lace shawls so delicate and fine they make us sigh. They are knitted with the finest lace yarn, using indigenous techniques such as Nupps, a bobble-like stitch. The traditional square shawls are usually knitted in pieces the shawl body and the lace edging - and are then sewn together to complete the garment. The finishing is called "framing," using a wooden board with numerous pins nailed on the perimeter of the frame. This type of lace shawl became popular in the early 19th century, when Haapsalu was flourishing as a resort destination. At that time, Russian nobles loved wearing the light shawls while walking down a waterfront promenade. At one point, the shawl became so popular that some of them were machine-knit. However, some techniques like nupps cannot be done on a machine, so the craft of handknitting Haapsalu shawls was reborn. The town of Haapsalu creates many educational opportunities to keep the craft alive. All girls are taught how to knit in school, and there is also a knitting school in the town. Every summer, the school hosts a lace knitting festival that attracts native fans and those from abroad. A pattern design competition is always very popular. Competitors must use nupps, but are encouraged to mix modern knitting and new techniques. Knitting a lace shawl is as addictive as knitting socks. It requires skill to make soft and fluffy nupps, and a lot of patience, but I'd like to try knitting one of these shawls at least once. Be careful not to knit too many nupps - or the shawl will not go through a ring!

Bookish. The books I am going to introduce are two of my recent favorites, which also match one of the themes of this issue - modern interpretations of traditional designs. Beautiful images, stories of the places, and some original designs are the common format of both books. Now, let's look inside the books!

Colours of Shetland by Kate Davies Self Published, 2012 (Book sold through the author's website: http://katedaviesdesigns.bigcartel.com/product/ colours-of-shetland) Kate's blog has been one of my go to places when I want to pretend that I am taking a long walk on a Scottish hill (which is more frequent than you can imagine). Before discovering her blog, I bought a few picture books on Scotland, but I prefer Kate's photos. Her book ranks as a favorite in my enormous book collection. As expected, she captures the landscape of the Shetland Islands beautifully, they are the essence of her design inspiration. The book has 5 parts - Stevenson Lighthouse, Puffin, Ursula (a native plant), an area called Northmavine, and Scatness archaeological site - plus her essays and technique instructions. Each part has a topic-related story

64

amirisu issue 3

and a set of patterns she designed for the theme. Her sensitivity to colors - the way she picks and matches colors from natural landscape - is superb. My particular favorites are Puffin sweater and Northmavine Hap shawl. Her exquisite color choices always make me want to knit in exactly the same colorways. Patterns are charted in full color, making them very easy to read. I sincerely hope there will be a Japanese versionof this book, knowing that Jamieson's yarn is already very popular in Japan. Highly recommended.

Voyageur Press, 2013 (Amazon

When a friend showed me his breathtaking photos from his trip to Iceland, Iceland became my dream vacation destination. But, I never really connected it with knitting. Then I started to notice well-known knitters/designers like Ysolda and Jared blogging about their experiences. Iceland is a very popular destination for knitters these days. Imagine you need a wool sweater all year long!

Helene has sent us a copy of Icelandic Handknits just in time! Loopi knitting is already well-loved in the Japanese knitting community, but I didn't know the extent of Iceland's knitting culture until now. Elaborate color work, intarsia and intricate lace knitting have been part of people's daily lives for generations. In this book, Icelanding Handknits, Helene uses traditional techniques to design items like mittens but she also interprets them for more modern usage. Techniques are shown in detail with full color pictures. Read this book, and you will visualize yourself holding a flight ticket to Iceland in your one hand, a knitting bag in the other.

The loose fit in the body coupled with fitted sleeves give this piece enough style that it can go from casual to the workplace with ease!

Knit Apps!

App

Text and images by Mika Kitahara

Raglanify: Knitting Sweater Pattern Generator ShhStudios Price: USD 0.99/ 85 円 日本語の App Store はこちら。 Hi everyone! In the last issue I introduced a sock knitting app, and I'd like to take it a bit further this time. It's an app called Ragnify, which helps you knit a top down pullover. For me, this is the first time knitting a top down garment ever! So, in addition to reviewing the app itself, I can tell you whether or not a novice garment knitter like myself can really knit a pullover with this pattern. The result? Yes! I finished the garment fairly easily (image 1). If you usually knit accessories and small items but want to try a garment, this is the app you need. The pullover itself consists of simple stockinette stitch and ribbing. Techniques required are CO, knit, purl, increase, decrease, BO, and that's it! The pattern will give you a single color pullover, but you can easily turn it into a bordered style. I added a few borders to the yoke as you see in the images. (Image 2) It's a beginner friendly app, but it can help knitters of all levels to make a perfectly fitted pullover. Take your measurements accurately, enter the data into the app (Image 3), and it will prompt you for other measurement details. (Image 4). Waist shaping and sleeves are automatically calculated based on your preference. (Image 5) You can pick from 3 neckline options and the app also lets you choose your favorite increase stitch. (Image 6 & 7) Are there any cons? Yes, you still need to take several correct measurements, and you still have to knit a swatch to get the proper gauge. You cannot skip swatching because you will need to enter the gauge (ahem, you really should swatch before you knit a garment...). Conclusion: Well worth it! It definitely helped me to knit a perfectly fitted pullover for the very first time. I highly recommend it! ★★★★☆ (4 stars out of 5) * This is an iOS (iPhone/iPad) and Android app.

Let's Knit with Japanese Pattern

Japanese pattern books seem to be very popular outside of Japan, but we keep hearing that people have a hard time understanding what is written on the pages. Even for us Japanese, understanding the instructions is a challenge and requires some knowledge. This new series will tell you how to read Japanese patterns. It's written in Japanese (of course!) so it may be difficult at times, but we hope you will find the knowledge useful.

This time, we are going to explain what is actually written on the pages. Most Japanese patterns have similar layouts, so please check the books you have and compare with below. Section 1: Written Instruction (red box) (1) Materials ( 材料 ) This section tells you required yarn and other materials. The key difference is that there is no information about yarn weight, material composition (cotton, wool, silk, etc.), or yardage. The only information given is # of balls(skeins) and total yarn weight in grams. If you want to know the yardage, you need to search for information about the yarn, find out its yardage per ball, then calculate the total yardage. (2) Needles and Notions ( 甚具 ) Tells you which needles to use, in Japanese needle size. (3) Finished size ( 出来䞊がり寞法 ) Japanese patterns usually have only 1 size (M), or in some cases size S and M. (4) Gauge ( ゲヌゞ ) Same as with English patterns. Key Point

Similar to "Notes" in English patterns, this section explains the basic construction or how the piece is knitted. This is all you get in terms of instruction, a challenge for novice knitters even in Japan. Section 2: Schematic Instruction

Blue letters: Instructions on stitch patterns, such as lace pattern, stockinette, or 2x2 ribbing.

Red letters: Instructions on increases and decreases. This list of numbers is all you get on decreases/increases. I will explain this in further detail next time.

Black letters: schematic (in centimeters).

Section 3: Charts

As with English patterns, charts are read from right to left on the right side, left to right on the wrong side. Please note that WS symbols are written in a way that they show how they look from the RS. For example, K2tog symbol on a WS row is actually a P2tog when you knit it.

Time flies. It's already over a year since our little project was named "amirisu". The path we have walked for this third installment was bumpier than ever. Without our dear friends, we would never have made it to the goal. We are not sure when the online community started to emerge around this small virtual magazine, but we are grateful for the many people who support us, buy our patterns, and tap us on our shoulders to say "we can't wait for the next issue!" We would also like to thank our wonderful group of volunteers and the designers who see our potential.
