IN THE NEWS FORMER CONVENT IN STRUTHERS NOW RESIDENCE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS by Emmalee C. Torisk , The Vindicator

22 YEARBOOK

I

t took a few months, and about $150,000 in renovations, but the 60-year-old, 25-bedroom former convent at 795 Fifth St. now houses seven international high school students — and likely will welcome more by early next year, just in time for the spring semester. Those students, who moved mostly into the building’s first floor last week, attend Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline high schools through the American Scholar Group, an organization that helps international students seek education in the U.S, said Leslie Hite, president of ASG. “Most people’s first comment is, ‘Why are they coming here for an education?’” Hite said. “But they have a totally different view. They look to America as the place for the best education and for the best moral upbringing.” Hite added that ASG boasts about 50 students, with most housed at its Greenville, Pa., facilities. The almost daily drive for students attending

the two participating high schools in Youngstown was quite lengthy, she said, which is why the program began to seek out an additional — and closer — location earlier this year. From the start, the approximately 10,000-square-foot building in Struthers was “the perfect setup,” Hite said. She added that it required some major updating — including the installation of new plumbing, and heating and cooling systems — before students and their housemother, Shanna Traylor, could move in.

“We like to think that we’re molding and shaping the future leaders of the world.”

- Leslie Hite

“Everything is basically new,” Hite said, adding that ASG also made cosmetic improvements to the building’s interior and exterior, and outfitted the rooms with high-quality furnishings.

“We are a job creator,” Hite said. “This building will fill up, and we want to employ locally.” Right now, the facility’s residents are all boys between the ages of 15 and 18. They’re all from countries in Southeast Asia — and from families that are both incredibly powerful and wealthy. “We want to influence them in a positive way, and send them back with an American education and American values,” Hite said. “We like to think that we’re molding and shaping the future leaders of the world.”

Ho said, too, that the program will likely expand, and that the Greenville and Struthers facilities will become regarded as gateways of sorts through which the international community will enter the U.S. “These students are the movers and the shakers. When they graduate, they’ll go back and change things at home,” he said. “We hope the community will welcome what we do.”

David Ho, founder of ASG, echoed Hite’s words, noting that though the program began about three years ago, it has really taken off in the past 18 months, as the demand for international students to attend high school in the U.S. has also grown.

Minor renovations are still ongoing, Hite said, explaining that they’re mostly concentrated on the second floor. But several students already have applied to the program and are waiting to come to the U.S. Hite anticipates that overall enrollment could jump by more than a dozen students by January, which would then likely require the closing of a wing in the Fifth Street facility to separate the male students from the female students. It would also require hiring more staff, particularly part-time tutors, cooks and custodians.

I

n an effort to break misconceptions about different cultures, David Ho and agents of the American Scholar Group have hosted a number of delegates from China, showing that the American culture isn’t necessarily what is portrayed in the media. Bob Stanger, academic dean of American Scholar University School a division of the American Scholar Group, said that the delegates – including Yue Wang, who operates a number of educational campuses; a large catering business feeding more than 50,000 meals per day; and is involved with an amusement park in ShanDong province of China – were invited to the Greenville area to see the types of manufacturing and other business opportunities. Through an interpreter, Wang said he is very interested in investing in American manufacturing, as are most Chinese businessmen, because it is less risky than investing in Chinese manufacturing.

IN THE NEWS AMERICAN SCHOLAR GROUP WELCOMES CHINESE DELEGATES FOR FIRST-HAND VIEW OF GREENVILLE by Holly Patterson , The Record-Argus

24 YEARBOOK

“I will return to China and share the information and the hospitality of the American culture with my colleagues,” he said about his first visit to the United States. Another delegate was Goldie Huang, considered a country manager for the American Scholar Group based in China, who was accompanied by her assistant Catherine Jhou and Emilie Li, an agent who introduced Wang to the prospect of becoming involved with the American Scholar Group. We want to educate our colleagues of the value of an education and opportunities in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio,” Stanger said. “Once parents find out how safe our neighborhoods are, they are extremely interested in having their children educated here.” Lu Bai, another delegate, represents the ShanDong province, who is getting a better understanding of America’s educational opportunities.

Stanger said in September, delegates plan to host the education director of the ShanDong province – or the equivalent of the state’s secretary of the department of education – to share educational opportunities of American students here with those in Chinese schools. “Additionally, places like Greenville are prime locations because we are located within a short distance, an hour or so, to Pittsburgh and Cleveland, four hours from Toronto, five hours to Washington, D.C., and about eight hours to New York City. Because of that, we can offer all of the amenities of a modern life, with safety and security that comes from living in a smaller community,” Stanger said.

Between the St. Paul’s tour and the group visiting Ilsco, a lunch was served at “East Indies,” a multi-cultural restaurant located in the American Scholar Group building at 10 Penn Ave. “It is about forging interest from investors and educators, those who want to see businesses and their children succeed,” Ho said.

After touring several Main Street businesses Thursday morning, the group – including David Ho, executive chairman and group chief executive of the American Scholar Group – toured different businesses and industries in the area, including St. Paul’s, Ilsco Extrusions, PennTEQ and the Greenville-Reynolds Development.

merican Scholar Group (ASG) joyfully rang in the Chinese New Year on Friday January 31st, 2014 at Straits Settlement. The second annual reception was sponsored by the organization’s founders David and Lisa Ho. ASG celebrated its good fortune, success, and growth over the past year with ASG students, staff, and community of friends. The company is looking forward to another prosperous year as we enter the year of the horse. Just what is Chinese New Year? There’s actually a lot more to it than lion dances and firecrackers, Although these two pieces of tradition are integral and more visible, Chinese New Year to China is like Christmas to the West. In essence, Chinese New Year is spending time with family, gift giving and, the all important, food-fest.

Carol Lee, supervisor of ASG Food Services, provided her usual expertise in coordinating and preparing another outstanding meal to everyone’s delight. ASG student birthdays for the months of May and June were celebrated with a colorful picnic-themed birthday cake. Large tents were erected to provide protection from the relentless rain and cold; but even the inclement weather could not dampen the enthusiasm of all those in attendance.
