If you have school-aged children and you live in Northeast Florida, then you have no doubt been to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island in Georgia. The center is a major stop on the trail of worthwhile children’s activities in our region and always a favorite with kids. What child (or adult) can resist the plight of the devoted mother sea turtle who travels hundreds, even thousands, of miles so that her progeny can start their lives on the familiar beach of her own beginning? The rescue center’s work in providing medical care for injured turtles and trying to return them to their natural habitat is important and provides some important lessons for children and adults. Yet one need not travel that far to get close to the pathways of these amazing creatures. The drama of their age-old will to survive and perpetuate life is played out on Amelia’s shores every year. Most of the time, when we walk, jog, or lounge on the beach, we are completely unaware of the sea turtle’s astounding lifecycle, which begins right on the sand beneath our toes. Likewise, for the Atlantic right whale, the waters off of Amelia’s beaches are the backdrop for that species’ dramatic survival as well, as mother whales migrate each year to southern Georgia and north Florida to give birth to their precious calves. What better time of year to contemplate this universal drive to survive than August? While the human species in Northeast Florida is surviving its hottest month of the year (although, admittedly, we survive just wonderfully on Amelia, with our ocean breezes, beautiful beaches, and reliable air conditioning), what better time to relax in the shade and enjoy a good read? Our thanks go out to Wilma Allen for bringing us this wonderful idea and weaving together the stories of these marine mammals in such a clear and compelling way. So ﬁnd that shady spot at the beach or by the pool, and get ready for some uninterrupted reading time. melia Island waters abound with incredible creatures. Female right whales swim from Canada and northern New England to give birth off our shores. Sea turtles circle the Atlantic for years then nest and lay eggs on our beaches. And, like something out of a spy novel, an elite troop of security guards protects the Kings Bay Submarine Base just north of Amelia Island. These marine guards of a different sort are bottle-nosed dolphins and California sea lions raised in California and ﬂown to their assignments here. These smart and savvy animals patrol the waters around Kings Bay in shifts around the clock, says Carolina Le-Bert, DVM of Fernandina Beach. Le-Bert is a clinical veterinarian and marine mammal specialist with the National Marine Mammal Foundation (NMMF). This group

cares for about 100 Navy animals here and elsewhere around the globe. All marine mammals, including dolphins and sea lions, are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The U.S. Navy has studied and worked with these mammals since the 1950’s. In the early years, they were taken from the wild, but today’s animals were either acquired in the 1990’s from zoos and aquariums, or are descended from them. With their important role in naval operations, they are very well cared for. According to Le-Bert, who clearly loves her charges, the dolphins use their exceptional sonar capabilities to locate swimmers, mines, and other objects. The sea lions’ speed and dexterity allow them to zoom around obstacles, and they carry markers in their mouths to place on suspicious objects to be

Both dolphins and sea lions can dive far deeper than humans without getting “the bends.” “The sea lions are just like big, wet dogs, and the dolphins all have distinct personalities. Some love treats of shrimp, and others adore special attention from their trainers,” says Le-Bert. To keep them ﬁt and healthy, Le-Bert provides her patients the ultimate in medical care: each animal receives a thorough physical twice a year, with full-body ultrasound exams, x-rays, endoscopies, and more. Not only do these exams help keep the animals healthy, they provide valuable data on environmental changes that can impact a whole spectrum of aquatic life, food supplies, and ecological diversity. They also aid research into human conditions, such as diabetes and immune system irregularities. “Dolphins are top predators and they eat a lot of ﬁsh,” explains Le-Bert. “By closely monitoring their health, we can determine if environmental changes

may be affecting them and other marine life. For example, lab tests can show increases in dangerous PCBs and other contaminants in their diet and water. A goal is to help keep ﬁsh populations healthy and sustainable.” Taking into account their nutritional, social, and physical needs, Le-Bert and her team work hard to provide a good quality of life for their charges. Thanks to lavish rewards of ﬁsh and attention, the animals volunteer for their regular blood tests and exams. “When they’re on the job, they could go AWOL at any time,” she adds, “but, at the end of their shifts, they always come home.” Amelia Island’s sea turtles also come home to local waters, and they get lots of attention, too. Three different types nest on our beaches: leatherbacks, green turtles, and, our most common, the loggerhead. Leatherbacks can weigh over half a ton and reach eight feet in length. They are about twice the size of green turtles and four times the size of loggerheads, which can reach a beefy

12 specially trained and ‘permitted’ volunteers is dispatched to verify that a nest exists and stake it out for protection and monitoring.” Permitted volunteers have special training from the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and no one else is allowed to interfere with the nests, eggs, or hatchlings, Duffy cautions. Last summer, when storms and beach replenishment could have buried thousands of eggs, volunteers carefully moved them to safer locations. They also excavate nests when appropriate, to assist tiny hatchlings that may be struggling in the sand. At the end of the season, the group submits their data to Fish and Game ofﬁcials, who evaluate any change in turtle populations. “Nesting is going pretty well so far this year,” says Duffy, “which is great, since the last two years were also quite good.” As of mid-July, 164 loggerhead, two green turtle, and 14 leatherback nests had been found on Amelia Island. Eggs have been hatching and turtle watchers are now actively conducting

300 pounds. After spending several years at sea, females lumber up the beaches, dig nests in the sand, lay their eggs, and disappear into the waves. If all goes well, about two months later, hundreds of two- to three-inch babies hatch, struggle free of their nests, and clamber into the foaming surf for their ﬁrst taste of the sea. It’s a dangerous journey. These reptiles have existed for over 100 million years, but today they are seriously threatened or endangered. Amelia Island resident Mary Duffy is determined to save them. Almost thirty years ago, Duffy helped found the Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch, Inc., which now consists of sixty hardworking volunteers who each patrol one mile of beach at daybreak once or twice a week throughout the nesting season of May to October. These dawn patrols must be carried out—rain or shine—and procedures must be carefully followed and documented. “Volunteers look for turtle tracks and signs of nesting activity,” explains Duffy. “When a nest is suspected, one of the group’s

After the sea turtles have left the island, right whale mothers-to-be begin to arrive off shore. Moms, roughly the size of tractor trailers, deliver calves the length and weight of small sedans. They feed and nurse for a while in our waters, before swimming back up north in the spring, with moms nursing offspring all along the way. With as few as 400 in existence today, North Atlantic right whales are one of the rarest of all whale species and among the world’s most endangered mammals. Because it is likely that their only calving ground is off the coasts of Georgia and northern Florida, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) collects data from a whale conservation headquarters in Fernandina Beach.

According to Barb Zoodsma, a NOAA marine mammal biologist here, laws implemented in the last few decades to protect the whales seem to be making a difference. “Right whale numbers are trending upward, but their recovery is precarious, with ups and downs along the way,” she says. “This year we conﬁrmed the birth of only six calves, whereas last year there were 22. The low number is likely due to poor foraging conditions in 2010, a critical time for the 39 moms who gave birth in 2009. We were expecting a poor year this year, but hoping for the best.” Births are just one factor in the whales’ survival. Reducing early deaths due to human activity is another. Given their size, right whales are surprisingly hard to see. They are darkly colored, have no dorsal ﬁn that projects from the water, and, because they spend considerable time at or near the water’s surface, they are especially vulnerable to boat collisions. Surprisingly, impact

with a boat just 36 feet long can be fatal to a right whale. Smaller boats can kill or maim a calf, or a manatee, another endangered mammal found in our waters and one that has also been a subject of Zoodsma’s research. Manatees, the clumsy-looking aquatic relatives to elephants, migrate from southern waters to feed and breed in our rivers and bays in the summer. These chunky vegetarians, sometimes called sea cows, can weigh over 1,000 pounds and devour up to 100 pounds of sea grass a day. They prefer shallow waters and need temperatures of at least 68 degrees to survive. If the water stays warm in the fall, they may stick around longer than is prudent. One group of manatees perished here in the 1990’s, Zoodsma recalls. They wintered over in Fernandina harbor keeping warm in water discharged from a local industrial plant. “When the plant reduced its warm discharges in the mid-

90’s, it was hoped that the manatees would move south, but unfortunately they didn’t,” she explains. “Many of them died.” From this sad experience, Zoodsma and her colleagues learned lessons that may help protect other manatees from a similar fate. At this time, the manatee population seems to be slowly stabilizing. Entanglements in ﬁshing gear, ingestion of plastics and ﬁshing lines, and boat collisions are serious manmade threats to all these beloved animals. Sea turtles face additional hazards, due to shoreline development in their nesting spots. It is estimated that fewer than one out of 1,000 turtle hatchlings survive to adulthood. Will today’s efforts be enough to save these extraordinary species from extinction? We can only hope that with care, protection, and incredible luck, these marine marvels will stage a comeback, and keep coming back to the waters off Amelia Island.

“LITTLE RIVER BAND” TO HEADLINE MUSICAL LINE-UP AT AMELIA ISLAND’S GREAT SOUTHERN TAILGATE COOK-OFF The Australian rock group Little River Band will headline the third annual Great Southern Tailgate Cook-off, which returns August 24 & 25. Considered one of Australia’s most signiﬁcant bands, the group will perform on Saturday, August 25 at 7 p.m. at Main Beach. One of the great vocal bands of the ‘70s and ‘80s, the Little River Band was the ﬁrst band to have Top 10 hits for six consecutive years. The group has sold more than 30 million albums and recorded 13 American Top 40 hits, including “Reminiscing,” “Lady,” and “Take It Easy on Me.” The Great Southern Tailgate Cookoff is a free, two-day event, offering live entertainment and barbeque from some of the top competitors in the country. Amelia Community Theatre and ACT Managing Director Linda McClane were recently honored by the American Association of Community Theatre (AACT) at their 2012 convention in New York City. ACT received the AACT Twink Lynch Award, which recognizes AACT member theatres for completing major steps in new directions, expanding services to their community, or moving to the next level of organizational development. McClane received the AACT Distinguished Merit Award, which recognizes contributions made to promote and develop the highest standards for community theatre. ACT was founded in 1981 with 80 charter members contributing $10 each. Shows were held at the high school and other available halls. In 1988, ACT purchased a building and converted it into 88-seat theatre. In 2005, the allvolunteer theatre began a capital campaign to build a new theatre. In 2010, now with one employee and a mortgage, ACT opened their new 160-seat theatre. Linda McClane is a charter member who has served in all areas of production. She is on the Board of Directors and is a past president. Linda became Managing Director of the theatre in 1998.

THE AMELIA ISLAND BLUES FESTIVAL’S “HISTORY OF THE BLUES” EXHIBIT AT THE AMELIA ISLAND MUSEUM OF HISTORY The Amelia Island Museum of History is launching a new exhibit in partnership with the Amelia Island Blues Festival. The “History of the Blues” exhibit will open on August 3rd at 6:00 p.m., with a lecture about the genre and an acoustic guitar performance by Roger “Hurricane” Wilson. At the event, the ofﬁcial 2012 Blues Festival musical line-up will also be announced. After a ribbon cutting and reception, visitors can explore the exhibit, which will feature a blues history timeline, blues memorabilia, historic photos, and an informative video. The twomonth exhibit also features a tribute to the “Chitlin’ Circuit,” a collective name for venues throughout the eastern and southern United States that allowed African-American musicians and entertainers to perform during segregation. ernandina Beach’s 11-year-old Sarah Harding is wheelchairbound. When Sarah goes to the park, she sits in the sun and watches, or—even worse—she doesn’t go at all because the property is not conducive to her wheelchair, and her mom cannot lift her to play on the equipment. “I don’t think it’s fair for anyone to be left out, and that is why I am committed to the playground project,” explains Amelia Island’s Aaron Morgan, chairman of 8 Flags Playscapes, Inc., and a father of two. “8 Flags Playscapes’ mission is to create and maintain a community-accessible playground that integrates exercise, art, nature, music, imagination, and local history for children of all abilities, including those with visual impairments.” Today, there are approximately 200 children in Nassau County who cannot access outdoor parks because of their disabilities, and this doesn’t include the numerous disabled

adults who would love to participate with the children. “The neat thing about this playground is that it will be built above the limits of ADA guidelines,” says board member Trey Warren. “This means that playground surfaces will be accessible to both adults and children using their means of mobility. Grandparents will be able to play with their grandchildren.” 8 Flags Playscapes, Inc. recently became incorporated and is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization. To date, over $30,000 has been raised to build the playground and over $10,000 of in-kind donations have been received. The City of Fernandina Beach is in full support and presented a letter in early 2012 confirming that the project may use the three-quarters of an acre of land behind the Atlantic Avenue Recreation Center. “It is such a beautiful piece of property,” says volunteer Melissa Morgan. “The large oak trees provide a canopy of shade, it is situated at the entrance to the Egans Creek Greenway, and there are bathrooms! We are very grateful for the city’s support.” The design of the playground is not only accessible for people of all abilities, but it is created to be representative of the local history and traditions. “It’s a really fun design,” says volunteer Inga Warren. “It presents a large shrimp boat, lots of nature, a bird’s nest, a fort, a stage, and educational totem poles.” For children with visual impairments, the play space incorporates music, sand water for tactile exploration, vibrant signage, including Braille, and landscaping with fragrant plants to appeal to the sense of smell as the seasons change. “The playground is so much more than a traditional playground. Children will have a new experience each visit,” explains board member Sharyl Wood. “Additionally, it’s important for all children to learn to include others, regardless of their characteristics or abilities, and the playground will facilitate this practice.” 8 Flags Playscapes, Inc. is especially grateful to Architect Ted Kempton, Builders Care Nassau County, Gillette & Associates, Inc., and John E. Myers for their generous in-kind donations. The group is actively pursuing grants, but they still need help to raise the additional $200,000 necessary to complete the project in 2013. Brown Bag Lunch This month Dr. Bill Birdsong who is a native Floridian and local historian will discuss his efforts to solve the mystery of a trunk found stored at the museum. This trunk is roughly 100 years old, apparently belonged at one time to JL Battiste (Battiste Funeral home founder) and contains photographs of various unidentiﬁed Caucasian and African American people as well as local landmarks. melia Island has its own island troubadour. Inspired by the island and the coastal waters he loves, Sean McCarthy writes and records songs that are all about island life. He is a familiar and popular performer on the Amelia Island musical scene. Sean’s first CD, Life In a Beachtown, was a great success, and he has just released his second CD, A Bad Day Fishin’. Sean is the youngest sibling in Amelia Island’s McCarthy clan. The McCarthys are a big part of what’s happening on the island. The middle brother, Brian McCarthy, a master seafood chef, treated folks to the best of seafood at the famous Down Under Restaurant for many years. He is back and serving up his famous fried seafood and hush puppies at Timoti’s Fry Shack next to Karibrew. Brian’s wife, Susan, operates Trailer Park Collectables on Centre Street. The oldest brother, Kevin, offers a variety of delightful water adventures to visitors and locals with Amelia River Cruises. Youngest brother Sean often captains one of the popular cruises, including their newest, the Shrimping-Eco Tour. He joins Andrea Margiotta, marine biologist, as they take families out to experience the actual casting of a fishing net, then pull in of catch to learn about the creatures they catch. In addition, Sean is a licensed charter boat captain and a top local fishing guide. Sean has loved music from an early age. Born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, he grew up in Fernandina Beach. He started writing music at age 13 and has been writing ever since. As a Nashville recording artist and respected singer/songwriter, he has several national credits. His original songs are a colorful

blend of tropical, pop, and country. His time in Nashville in the late 80’s and 90’s is treasured, but the call back to his island home could not be ignored. The title of McCarthy’s debut CD, Life In a Beach Town, is what he is all about. His complete enjoyment of the carefree, casual lifestyle of living on an island comes out in each and every song. He found he had even more music in him and new stories to tell, so his latest CD, A Bad Day Fishin’, was released just in time for Shrimp Festival 2012. In everything he does his love of the water is evident. He is a surfer, a fisherman, has built boats, sold boats, organized charters, and he has been a harbor master. His varied talents also include painting, and his work can been seen at Timotis, Karibrew, and is available at the Amelia SanJon Gallery. “Sean’s love and knowledge of the water is evident in his bright, impressionistic paintings,” says Sandra Baker-Hinton, owner of the gallery. Sean is truly one of the most popular entertainers on and around Amelia Island. He is available to perform solo or backed by his talented band of fellow Fishin’ Musicians. His favorite singer is James Taylor. It’s not surprising, as the two have a talent for telling very personal stories through their music. So what about the name of the new CD? old standbys Don’t forget about some of the time-tested plants that thrive— and look great—in our gardens BY BETTY MORRELL

n the last few issues, I have written about many exotic and unusual plants. Now is the time to get back to the basics, taking stock of the main plants that work well in nearly any local garden, either as border plants, ground cover, foundation plants, specimen plants, or grasses. The first old standby plant that comes to mind is the Ligustrum. This frequently overlooked plant makes a wonderful hedge. When limbed up, it becomes a beautiful specimen bush or tree, with a canopy. Pittosporum, either variegated or plain green, is a hardy bush that can be used as a foundation plant (kept trimmed) or let go into a natural large bush. In spring, both the Pittosporum and Ligustrum have flowers that attract the bees. The Pittosporum’s flowers are especially fragrant. The Viburnum, a wonderful plant as either a shrub or a tree, makes a great privacy hedge. It grows a foot a year in both directions, and has beautiful flowers in the spring. By the way, the Pittosporum has the most wonderfully fragrant flowers. Indian Hawthorne is another old favorite. It is salt-tolerant and has attractive, fragrant flowers.

TIP O F T HE M O N T H The common grasses for our area come in different sizes and colors and make wonderful borders or foundation plantings. Evergreen giant or Liriope are just two wellknown types that are well adapted to our area, and so need very little care. Some prefer sun, while others prefer shade. Just make sure they don’t sit in water, as they will get root rot.

Azaleas are always an outstanding shrub, with beautiful ﬂowers in spring. The new varieties will bloom throughout the year. There are Azaleas that grow in the shade and others that thrive in the sun, so you can plant a whole lot of these shrubs in many different shades to create a panoramic sea of color. Thyrallis is a much overlooked shrub with its spiked yellow blooms from summer through fall and into the ﬁrst freeze. It may die back, but it will bounce back in the spring. Another old reliable is the Lantana. It takes lots of sun, is drought-resistant, spreads like a weed, and provides lots of color. What’s better than that? Yes, lantana is like an invasive weed, along

with the asparagus fern. It is a good choice, however, if you need an area ﬁlled in, and it can be controlled. It comes in many different colors. For accent plants in the garden, there is the African Iris, with two colors and foliage types to choose from: one blooms white with purple, and the other yellow. Society Garlic is one of my favorites. It may be a tad aromatic in not the most pleasant of ways, but it performs so beautifully as a border or cluster plant. It has a nice green base and sports pretty little purple ﬂowers on taller spikes. I like to pair them with red knock-out roses. Our common reliable plants not only add color to your landscape, but allow you to create a maintenancefree landscape, and, in some cases, reestablish native material, minimizing your irrigation needs and thus reducing your overall maintenance costs. That is because many of these are native plants and do not need a lot of water once established. They are also tolerant of the conditions in our area. ucked in like a piece of a puzzle, Dennis and Sherry Schroeder’s house snuggles under the dense green umbrella coverage of live oak trees. With an unassuming craftsmen-style cottage exterior partly camouﬂaged by the moss-dripping oak trees, it is quietly inviting, leaving guests surprised by the treasures that lie within. A beautiful curved staircase and 24-foot ceilings offer a dramatic entrance in the foyer. Peering through the foyer to the living room beyond, a variety of windows and doors offers beautiful views opening to the green of the third hole of the Oak Marsh golf course. Ready for retirement in 2008, Sherry and Dennis found the house of their dreams. For him, there is easy access to the golf courses he loves; for her, there is a

beautiful open kitchen adjacent to a generous family room. Dennis ﬁrst visited the island on business with the Container Corporation (now Rock Ten) paper mill. Coming back many times over the years, the couple was encouraged by friends to purchase a part-time home in 1997. Their current home is the second they have bought on the Plantation. Both born in Wisconsin, Sherry and Dennis met while in college at the University of Wisconsin. They were married in June 1970, but, within a month, Dennis was drafted into the army and sent to El Paso, Texas, just at the Vietnam War was ending. At the completion of duty in early 1972, the couple returned to Wisconsin. A career with Beloit Corporation eventually took the couple to Mobile, Alabama. In 1977,

Dennis began a career with BE&K Engineering, which was at the time a ﬁve-year-old engineering and construction company. He held various positions, served on the board of directors, and retired as president of BE&K in 2009. Since retiring and moving to Amelia Island full-time in 2009, both Sherry and Dennis have become actively involved in the community. Both attend the Amelia Plantation Chapel, where Dennis serves on the board. Sherry is actively involved in the children’s program for Community Bible Study. She loves morning walks, her needlework, and keeping up with the latest on her grandchildren. The Schroeders are the second family to live in the home. Originally built in 2002, the house was designed by John

Cotner and decorated by Brett Carter. One year, the home was a featured home on the popular annual Micah’s Place Home and Garden Tour. The house now has a new life and personality, thanks to Sherry and Dennis Schroeder, who have slowly made it their own. In 2010, they replaced the outdoor patio area with a screen-enclosed splash pool and elevated stone spa with a waterfall. A flirty mermaid sits atop a wall separating the spa and pool, and the area can be accessed from the master bedroom, as well as the family room. “What we love about this house is the open-flow design featuring the kitchen and gathering room with multiple windows and the oak-lined view of the golf course. It fits our lifestyle perfectly,” shares the couple. “Eclectic,” is how Sherry is quick to describe the many treasures scattered throughout the house. Traditional oriental rugs purchased in Turkey spread elegantly on the Brazilian Ipe

hardwood ﬂoors. Rich, dark wood cabinets throughout the home hold treasures Sherry and Dennis have collected through the years. Notable artwork in the house includes ceramic pieces from Ephesus, Turkey, a beautiful bronze statue of a parrot, various paintings from their travels, and a special collection of hand-blown glass birds from Finland. Dennis’s ofﬁce features a very unusual desk that serves an aesthetic function, as well as its practical one. Created by a “mad hatter” artist in Sedona, Arizona named Terry Mears, it is made of wood cut from a dead Juniper tree from the Arizona desert. The Schroeders own several pieces of Mear’s unusual wood sculptures. With their diverse collection of artwork and the charming views through the canopied trees to the golf course, this beautiful home is full of visual surprises. The Schroeders have found their perfect Amelia Island retreat and—no surprises here—they are enjoying it thoroughly.

Kelley’s COURTYARD CAFE Kelley’s Courtyard Café offers dishes with pizazz – from Southern classics and comfort food to fabulous desserts – all in a delightful courtyard in downtown Fernandina Beach. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

elley’s Courtyard Café is going into their third year in business in historic downtown Fernandina Beach, and owner Michael Gass is offering up some of his family’s famous recipes. My friend Sherry and I stopped by Kelley’s for dinner one evening and were thrilled that Chef Michael was able to visit with us for a bit and make some menu suggestions. Kelley’s is a family tradition on Amelia Island, with nearly every family member blessed with superb cooking skills and a love for food and entertaining. Our server brought us each a glass of Fleur du Cap Sauvignon Blanc, a lovely summer French wine. While many sauvignon blancs are very fruity and citrusy, Sherry pointed out

that the French variety, a white Bordeaux, is ﬂoral and softer on the palate. As the wine lost its initial chill in the summer heat, it actually improved in ﬂavor as we drank it. How nice! We shared a plate of Fried Green Tomatoes with Roasted Red Pepper Remoulade and Tropical Fruit Salsa. This is a wonderful appetizer: the tomatoes are crispy, with a cornmeal crust, and it is very moist within. Chef Michael makes his own remoulade,

and it shows. The salsa is a combination of pineapple, honeydew melon, watermelon, yellow bell pepper, and cilantro. Michael makes a unique Curried Spaghetti Squash Soup that we were eager to try. The base is chicken stock, with sautéed spaghetti squash, celery, onions, carrots, coconut milk, and curry. It is a splendid soup, full of flavor yet still very light and healthy. We also ordered Allie’s Salad, named for Michael’s wife, which features baby spinach, tart apples, golden raisins, and honey toasted almonds in a poppy seed vinaigrette. The dressing was sweet and satisfying and paired well with the other ingredients. For our entrees, Gary suggested their special that evening, a Potato Chip Encrusted Lane Snapper, served with Chorizo Macaroni and Cheese and Collard Greens. We also decided to try their Blue Plate Special: Bacon-Wrapped Barbecue Meatloaf served with Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes and a Vegetable Medley. In true diner tradition, each night Chef Michael offers up a different Blue Plate offering, giving new pizazz to traditional comfort foods. The homemade meatloaf is covered with thick cut bacon, and the barbecue sauce is coarse and fresh-tasting. Sherry and I both agreed that Chef Michael needs to bottle and sell his secret sauce—it was fantastic. The mashed potatoes were light and fluffy, made with red skin and russet potatoes, and his medley of summer squash was tender and buttery. The Snapper—my favorite fish—was delicate and slightly sweet, and the crust added a nice balance to that flavor. There was a bit of beurre blanc drizzled on the fish and a fruity salsa. The macaroni and cheese was creamy and a little spicy, and the collards are a simple and yet perfect recipe—slow simmered with onions, green peppers, and jalapenos. Both entrees were truly delicious! Perhaps my favorite part of the meal was Granny Mutt’s Blueberry Squares, served with vanilla ice cream and warm blueberry compote, a Kelley’s family tradition. Not only is it the best blueberry dessert I’ve ever had, but Chef Michael is pleased to share the recipe with anyone who asks. The secret to this dish is lots of fresh blueberries and plenty of love. Kelley’s offers indoor and outdoor dining, as well as a fine selection of sandwiches, plus on- and off-site catering. They are open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner.

love to be on the water, but I would never have the patience to maintain a boat. Of course, the next best thing is to know someone who has a boat and is willing to share the good times. With no boating friends immediately available, I went in search of my boating adventure and found Amelia Family Charters, created by Tom Lohman. Captain Lohman knows the waters around Amelia Island. He grew up in Amelia City and now lives on the property his parents owned. Late on a beautiful summer afternoon, Lohman took a group of us out for a casual tour. We climbed aboard the distinctive Blacklab Marine aluminum boat, which he keeps docked at his mid-island riverside home. A 26-foot boat made of lightweight aluminum, the boat can hold four to six people comfortably, and Lohman has adapted it to make it handicap-accessible. As we ventured out into the Amelia River, we were full of questions about the houses along the shore. With the knowledge of someone who has spent most of his life on these shores, Lohman recounted tales of the many changes he has witnessed, as well as the things that have remained the same, such as the wildlife and the beauty of our natural surroundings. We headed south to explore the waters around Talbot Island. Seeing the familiar island from the water gave us a unique perspective. There was evidence of a recent forest ﬁre. Like thorny sculptures, the trees that had been claimed by erosion line the beach. An entertaining storyteller, Lohman shares his memories

of growing up on Amelia Island. He remembers Gus Gerbing and the beautiful camellias and azaleas he grew. Having completed the Florida Master Naturalist program offered through University of Florida, he enjoys sharing his wealth of knowledge about area flora and fauna. Lohman explains that each outing can be custom-designed for the client, whether it is a fishing excursion, an eco-tour, a sunset cruise, or just time on the water. Fishing outings can be backwater, inshore, or offshore. What you catch depends on the season and weather. Those interested in nature will thrill at the sight of white pelicans, roseate spoonbills, herons, egrets, ospreys, and even, at times, bald eagles. The waters offer sightings of manatees and dolphins. Trips to Cumberland Island are popular and offer a unique chance to learn about the geography of Florida’s most northern barrier island, Amelia Island, and Georgia’s most southern, Cumberland. For my next trip, I’d like to take my grandchildren out to catch some fish or maybe some pesky crabs. Lohman will take care of everything—even the nasty piece of meat to attract the crabs. Or perhaps a sunset cruise? You can just pack your own cooler and enjoy a beautiful cruise on the Amelia River. We found our afternoon with Captain Lohman delightful and almost as good as owning a boat—with none of the headaches!
