‘I DON’T WARNA GROW UP’ BOOK Sean Vegezzi’s cult favourite ‘I Don’t Warna Grow Up’ is a depiction of youth culture in NYC. Capturing the essence and adventurous spirit of adolescence, Vegezzi’s project is a celebration of those who remain forever curious about the world and environment around them. The book, published by London publishing duo Fourteen-Nineteen, contains 144 pages of colour monograph printed photos in an 18 x 27 cm format. Accompanying the photography is an essay by Abeline Choen. Since 2000, Vegezzi has been photographing various explorations through the urban landscape of New York City. The book displays abandoned subway tunnels, building sites, alleyways, rooftops and various other locations that display the unique industrial framework of NYC. I Don’t Warna Grow Up is a compulsive account of the reckless and instinctual spirit of youth. Available over at Antenne Books now.

PRONUNCIATION OF THE BRAND NIKE Nike co-founder and CEO Phil Knight has confirmed how Nike should correctly be pronounced. It’s something that most of us Nike fans have debated at some point and have undoubtedly been incorrect on at some point, but we can finally confirm that it is 100% pronounced ni-key. In the UK, the majority of people pronounce the brand name as ni-ke. I too used this pronunciation my entire life until I started working with the brand and found myself corrected (it was naturally one of the first questions I asked). Well, curious about exactly how they should be referring to the global sportswear giant, two creatives called Ben and Ken wrote to Phil Knight asking him to clear it up. Whether or not Phil himself actually circled the answer will remain a mystery (if the letter was even posted in the first place), but the point still stands, it’s pronounced ni-key. It’s also a great way to grab the brands attention as a pair of creatives, whether it’s legitimate or a hoax. With this in mind, the duo decided they should help spread the message and have created some great tongue-in-cheek advertising materials to correct the world and act as a creative CV. Find out the full story and make your own mind up on the Ben and Ken the website.

THE DONUT STORE RELAUNCH ONLINE After six and a half years of business, Bristol store Donuts has today announced that they will close their physical store on Perry Road this weekend. The store will re-launch online at the end of this month with a new website and the inclusion of some interesting new brand additions and promises of some big collaborative projects to come. With the new online store, Donuts will also launch their own range of apparel which runs on from some of the great special releases we’ve seen from the store in the past. Despite its quiet demeanour over the last couple of years, Donuts has long held the title of one of the UK’s most respected streetwear stores and has played host to a number of great brands, events and projects over the years. Their support for many of the UK’s independent brands has undoubtedly helped young start-ups get off the ground, providing a great platform alongside some of the world’s great brand names. On April 12th and 13th, Donut said goodbye to the physical store with a close-out sale and a few send off drinks.

INTRODUCTION OF ‘ROUX’ CLOTHING Introducing a new contemporary mens streetwear brand in London: ‘Roux’. Although this is technically the second drop from the brand (we slipped on the first one – can’t be perfect), this brand is still very much in it’s birth stage. This lookbook, titled ‘Scuro’, shows the brand develop it’s offering into shirting, crews and jackets, firmly establishing themselves and their aesthetic. Shot by Mr Whisper, the lookbook is a moody affair and suits the dark monochromatic colour palette of the collection. The collection focuses heavily on jersey, often using Airtex and loopback cotton to add details and contrast where needed. It’s a very strong start for the brand, offering stylised basics with a twist. We shall see how they develop and grow! Head over to the Roux website to purchase from the collection.

LAUNCH OF TOM’S SKATE SHOP London’s latest skate shop has opened it’s doors in Stoke Newington, East London – the aptly named Toms Skate Shop. We take a look inside.

In the mean time, you can like them on Facebook. If you’re in the Stoke Newington area be sure to swing by, show some support and say hello to Tom.

Set up and manned by Tom, the store is literally what it says it is, Tom’s skate shop. Having only just opened it’s doors, this shop is still in the process of finding itself both in regards to it’s customer base and it’s stock, but it’s made a very strong start. With brands such as Thrasher, Fourstar, Lakai, Etnies, Flip, Magenta, Isle, Girl and Anti-Hero they have opened shop with some of skatings best brands behind them. In the coming weeks expect to see Emerica and Altamont also come onboard as Toms picks up momentum.

As you can tell from the quote below, he clearly deserves the support as that’s what he has built the store to do – to support the growing local skate scene:

The shop build is light and spacious, perfect for the newly rediscovered sunshine. A full glass front with wide double doors make this a great spot to jam during the sunny months ahead. Toms promises more than just skate merchandise however, with downstairs becoming an art gallery and the store also offering “yoga for skaters” every Thursday, hosted by Tammy’s Yoga.

“Being a local skater in Stoke Newington for the past 5+ years I have seen the scene grow a lot, especially with the redevelopment of Clissold Park including a new skatepark. With limited selection of shops selling skateboards and skateboard fashioned clothing I decided to open a shop myself to help build the local skate scene and support the local skate community. Through the shop I hope to keep building the community in the area and will be running a variety of clubs and events to promote skating in the area.”

Currently, this store is keeping things classical and only selling from their bricks and mortar store. Something that is less common these days and should be cherished, although we are told that they will be going online in the near future.

INDCSN AW13 LAUNCH BY HOLLIE FERNANDO Indcsn continue their work with photographer Hollie Fernando, building on the series of 3 portraits from late last year with a new lookbook showcasing product from the brand’s Winter collection. Once again a single female model has been used throughout the shoot, which focuses mainly on the brand’s T-shirts along with some headwear, fleece and their Costanza flannel shirts. Eagle eyes will spot that it also provides the first opportunity to get a glimpse at product from indcsn’s next Winter drop which has yet to release. I particularly liked the images where Hollie has pulled inspiration from the graphics to set the shot, like those that utilise the bulldog and the banana. These elements add an extra dimension to the shots and inject a bit of humour too.

I get a little stick for regularly featuring indcsn stories and banging on about how much I love the brand, but I really do. If someone was to design a label strictly to my tastes, influences and interests they’d come pretty close to what you see in this collection. Take a look at the full shoot below and watch out for more Winter product from indcsn landing later this week. You can also find more of Hollie’s work at her website.

There are quite a lot of images here, but I’ve included them all because every one of them is great. The use of natural light throughout gives the shoot an unmistakable character that’s a key part of Hollie’s work – these are some of my favourite images that I’ve seen her produce.

ARTO SAARI FOR MR PORTER Arto Saari always had a unique style from day one. Here we see him styled by Nicolas Klam in luxury fashion items and shot by Beau Grealy for MR PORTER. The idea of someone skateboarding in a pair of Quoddy leather boat shoes or Lanvin suede sneakers, both around the £300 mark, is almost painful. It’s the same mentality as wearing your prize kicks, but to an extreme. I’m still working out wether I think it’s a stupid waste or unbelievably cool. Probably both. Anyway, one thing that is easy to establish is that Arto looks damn good in this shoot. Simple, understated style and he does it well. It’s interesting to see MR PORTER looking to people like Arto Saari, a well recognised name in skateboarding, for their style shoots at the moment. Along with other featured people, it’s clear that Mr Porter wants to appeal to those less traditionally fashion obsessed as well as their more predictable customer. What’s also interesting is that it doesn’t look out of place; Arto looks more than comfortable in the likes of Rag & Bone, Folk, J.Crew, Maison Martin Margiela and John Smedley. Head over to MR PORTER to read the interview and see the images in full.

END. WINTER 2014 LOOKBOOK END. present their Winter 2014 lookbook, showcasing some of their favourite product in store at the moment, set amongst the epic Hadrian’s Wall. Featuring brands such as Nigel Cabourn, A.P.C., Beams Plus and Stone Island, the styling for this lookbook is on point – an effortlessly stylish outdoor rambler. The mashup of traditional pieces with technical outerwear and streetwear works seamlessly. It’s all about the layers, layers, layers, as with any good Winter wardrobe. The lookbook itself is concise, with only 1 image per look, as if it were compiled by a perfectionist. Just to clarify, when I said epic earlier, I was referring to the striking scenery surrounding Hadrian’s Wall, as well as its significance, rather than the wall itself. The wall is infamously small. Head over to END. to shop the items featured in the lookbook.

HANON X DIADORA N.9000 SPECIAL Aberdeen sneaker retailer Hanon team up with Diadora to produce this ‘Saturday Special’ N.9000 sneaker. We love a Hanon collab. To put it simply, they’re some of the very best, always coming correct with the concepts and collaborative branding. This Diadora N.9000 doesn’t disappoint, paying homage to the ‘Saturday Special’, a UK public transport service that ran in the ’80s.

The Hanon x Diadora N.9000 ‘Saturday Special’ drops in-store this Saturday 31st May at 10am with the first 30 pairs receiving a commemorative t-shirt, priced at £120 a pair. The remaining stock will go online at 2pm the same day (if there’s much left) on the Hanon website.

Inspired by the influence of Italian sportswear in that decade, the shoe is coated in luxurious kangaroo leather and both pig and bovine suedes as well as the orginal close mesh that Diadora used on the 1990 OG N.9000. To ensure the shoe sticks to it’s roots, this collaboration has been hand-crafted in Italy. British transport references can be found in the details with a retro multi print on the in-sole and tongue backer, while the shoe features dual branding on the tongue, in-sole and heel to sign them off. Three pairs of laces, gold foil labels and a screen printed cotton dust bag and you’re good to go adventuring.

INSIDE OF THE NIKE SB NESW BOOK Nike SB launched their NESW book focusing on UK skateboarding. Unfortunately the book will never be sold, so we thought we’d scan in some of our favourite pages for you guys. We love a good bit of F&F publishing. In fact, it’s slightly addictive, especially when it comes from the Swoosh. This small hardback book to celebrate a decade of Nike SB in the UK is split into 4 sections; North, East, South, West. Putting a spotlight on their favourite skate shops and skate spots, Nike SB have created a book with an awesome UK focus. The only downside to this project is that it’s not for sale. Therefore, we’ve scanned a few of our favourite pages from each section to give you guys a glimpse. It’s been well over 10 years since I last photocopied pages from a skateboarding magazine, so this experience took me back! Copies of the book have been issued to select Nike SB stockists throughout the UK, so I’m sure if you ask nicely at your local, they will let you thumb through the book for a more detailed look.

LARSSON & JENNINGS NEW LONDON STORE London/Stockholm minimalist watch brand Larsson & Jennings have opened up shop in London’s Covent Garden. It’s been a pretty fast rise to success for Larsson & Jennings, seemingly appearing from nowhere last year, quickly becoming a stylised forces on Instagram. It’s one of those products that you wear and people ask you what it is (I know from first hand experience again and again). Unisex in their designs, the brand creates watches that work as well for men as they do for women, with clean, effortless designs that are easily styled.

As well as being able to browse the collection, the store houses LJX, Larsson & Jennings’ customisation experience where you can select different leather and hardware options to make your watch that bit more special. The store will also house exclusive products from the brand as in-store only releases.Find out more info at the Larsson & Jennings website.

With this in mind, it’s no surprise that their first retail venture follows the same rules aesthetically. A chic white space with light wooden floor presents the watches in a bar format. Inspired by the Swedish concept of fika, a sort of relaxed coffee break, the store encourages people to take time while they browse the selection, get familiar with the brand and product and enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee from the in-house barista. It’s an idea that sits very well with us.

The

DARK CIRCLE WINTER 14/15 LOOK BOOK Birmingham’s Dark Circle present the lookbook for their Winter 2014/2015 collection. The lookbook is kept relatively simple, relying on really nice lighting and good styling to allow the clothes to do their thing. We all like to see a lookbook that puts the clothes in situ, just as much as we like a good lookbook that keeps it simple in the studio, but I also appreciate a lookbook like this, which looks themed, but simply isn’t. It’s engaging to look at, but doesn’t beg some epic story. As for the collection, the brand bring a mix of T-shirts, hoodies, crewnecks, button down Oxford shirts, headwear and a US made Ebbets collaborative jacket. The Ebbets jackets seem to be getting a strong amount of love from Birmingham’s start-up brands, with Note Apparel also doing their thing with one recently (see here). As with a lot of Dark Circle’s recent drops, the collection is typography heavy, and it’s something we like, giving the clothing a clean and effective aesthetic. The Winter 14/15 collection is available exclusively via the Dark Circle website.

STUSSY X BARACUTA COLLECTION In a surprise move, streetwear giants Stüssy have announced a collaboration with iconic menswear brand Baracuta.

The Stüssy x Baracuta collection is available from Stüssy Chapter stores and their online store now.

Consisting of a bucket hat and G9 Jacket, the collection is concise to say the least, but it’s exciting. It’s always been a love of streetwear brands to team up with menswear and outdoor-wear brands to do their own spin on classic items, and this is one of those collaborations that we didn’t see coming, but it makes complete sense. The G9 jacket is an icon of design, so for Stüssy to get their creative hands on it is a good thing for everyone. Personally, I can’t work out if I think it’s a good or bad thing that the collaboration as a whole looks more traditional Baracuta than Stüssy. It takes me back to the Stüssy x Fred Perry collaborations a few years back and how clean and mature they looked. However, I can’t help but imagine what a more “streetwear” spin on a G9 would have looked like. Who knows, maybe they’ll do one in the future. I’m hoping this partnership doesn’t stop with this drop alone. The Stüssy pin in the style of the Baracuta logo is a very nice detail.

NIKE ILLUSTRATION BY REBEL Y UTH British illustrator Rebel Yüth applies his signature style to one of his favourite Nike ACG models, the Air Escape, to celebrate the relaunch of the brand. Taking the hiking boot and putting it in its natural environment, Rebel Yüth makes the ACG classic look at home. The addition of a particularly small bearded hiker (or is the boot just really big?) adds some fun enjoyment to the illustration. The addition of a frozen wooden Swoosh at the bottom of the image is a nice touch also. Head over to Rebel Yüth’s Instagram to keep up to date with the artist and his work.

NEW CROSSRAIL TUNNELS IN LONDON Having completed almost 90% of the new tunnels, Crossrail have released these epic photos showing the tunnels underneath London being constructed. Set to be completed in 2018, Crossrail will serve 40 stations and run through central London, hopefully removing commuters from the London Underground network as it essentially serves all of the main London train stations. In these stunning photos, we see what it’s like to work on the construction of a project this vast and unique. Having created the underground railway network concept back in 1863, we should have pride in our Underground network, however outdated parts of it are now. As much as we love(hate) it, it definitely needs an extension to relieve some of the vast amounts of human traffic that pass through it every day (24 million journeys to be exact). Here’s to hoping that these epic tunnels will relieve a lot of that. In the meantime, enjoy these stunning shots of life underneath London. Find out more about Crossrail at the official website.
