A Note from the Development Staff We know this has been a challenging time for AMC’s clients, as you have not been able to enter the hospital with your pets for over a year. We sincerely appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we adhere to health and safety guidelines. As always, the well-being of your pets is our top priority. Despite the pandemic, the number of patient visits at AMC is higher than ever – over 53,000 in 2020 –which means that there is greater demand for our services, and even more impetus to ensure the safety and continued availability of our essential workers. While we know this has prevented you from enjoying some of your donor society member benefits, we appreciate your patience. We look forward to the day when we can once again greet you at appointments, take you on behind-the-scenes tours of the hospital, and see you at in-person events and celebrations. In the meantime, thank you for your continued commitment to our work, which ensures our ability to fulfill our mission. The Development Team

Top Dog Gala 2020 AMC honored our own “Healthcare Heroes” at our 2020 Top Dog Gala for their incredible sacrifices to deliver world-class veterinary care throughout the pandemic. The December 8th virtual event also honored two remarkable working dogs: Dogtor Loki, a therapy dog at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and Hunter, a therapy dog with Hudson Valley Paws for a Cause. Thanks to an outpouring of support from our generous donors, the virtual event raised over $1.4 million. The digital program featured a moving tribute to the healthcare heroes, as well as interviews with the heroes and AMC leadership. A cast of animated animals, voiced by Broadway legend Bernadette Peters, acclaimed actress Candice Bergen, and the star of “Hamilton,” Miguel Cervantes, added a touch of whimsy to this very special event. The benefit was co-chaired by Nancy Kissinger, Elaine Langone, Marianne Mebane, Elizabeth Monaco McCarthy, and Annette de la Renta. We are most grateful to inimitable designer and event producer David Monn and his outstanding team for the creative concept and flawless execution of this unique virtual gala. Guests tuned in from around the world to watch the event that night, and it is now available for anyone to view online at: www.amcny.org/TopDog2020.

A Message from Our President and CEO I am sincerely humbled by the continued dedication of our supporters to the mission of the Animal Medical Center. This commitment is exemplified by your generosity throughout the pandemic, whether you responded to our emergency COVID-19 appeal, supported our events, or renewed your donor society membership. Your continued partnership has enabled us to sustain every component of our non-profit efforts, even while we had to make adjustments to our operations to ensure your safety and the safety of our staff. The pandemic has certainly reminded us of the importance of the underlying principle that fuels our work—the human-animal bond. Now more than ever, in these times of isolation and uncertainty, we take comfort in the companionship of our beloved pets. Consequently, the need for AMC—to provide compassionate and collaborative care, to train veterinarians, to find new treatments and prevention methods through research, and to educate the public about animal health—has become more apparent than ever. This is best exemplified by the rapid rise in our daily caseload and the continued overflow of patients in our emergency room. I have written about the need to expand and renovate the hospital many times in this column. The Board of Trustees and I remain deeply committed to this effort and are eager for construction to begin early this summer. Many of you have generously contributed to this effort, allowing us to raise over $59 million. I would welcome an opportunity to meet with others to provide more details about this exciting project and our additional funding needs. While we are still unable to meet in person or to offer tours to illustrate our plans, I would welcome the opportunity to meet virtually. If you are interested, please contact our Development office at Development@amcny.org or 212-329-8660 to make arrangements. In the meantime, stay healthy and safe. With warm regards,

Kate Coyne President and Chief Executive Officer

Sixth Annual One Health Conference The 2020 Virtual One Health Conference, “Connecting Human and Veterinary Medicine, A Comparative Approach to the Physical Rehabilitation of Chronic Diseases,” took place throughout the week of November 1620, rather than on just one day as the five previous in-person events had been. Since 2015, AMC, in partnership with the Clinical and Translational Science Center at Weill Cornell Medicine, has hosted this annual conference in which veterinarians and physicians come together to share information and insights that advance the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of both human and animal disease. The annual conference, which this year was hosted solely by AMC, takes place under the auspices of our Ann and Charles Johnson One Health Institute. Previous conferences have looked at comparative approaches to cancer, endocrine disease, cardiology, image–guided procedures, and environmental emergencies. Thanks to the virtual format this year, the conference and its speakers, including Dr. Leilani Alvarez, Director of the Tina Santi Flaherty Rehabilitation & Fitness Service and Head of AMC’s Integrative and Rehabilitative Medicine Department, as well as human physicians from Weill Cornell Medical Center, Hospital for Special Surgery, and the Kaiser San Rafael Medical Center, attracted over 500 attendees from around the world. Please visit our website to view several of the recorded lectures: www.amcny.org/OneHealth2020.

Chairman’s Circle On Tuesday, March 9, 2021, 40 members of the Chairman’s Circle donor society gathered via Zoom for an event highlighting the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Institute for Postgraduate Education. Since we were unable to gather in person, participants received a gift package containing “cocktails” and other special treats to enjoy while participating in a virtual panel discussion with President and CEO Kate Coyne and three current members of the training program. Dr. Hannah Gafen, a member of the 20202021 rotating internship class, Dr. Madison McKay, a second-year resident with the Internal Medicine service, and Dr. Jonathan Ferrari, the third-year Kovner Surgical Resident, engaged in a question-and-answer discussion focusing on their disparate paths to veterinary medicine; why they chose our training program; some of the most memorable cases they have seen; and what they have gained from this rigorous training experience. Members of the audience were also given an opportunity to ask questions about postgraduate education at AMC, which is one of the pillars of our non-profit mission and dependent on philanthropic support. AMC is extremely proud of the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Institute, which has provided advanced training for over 2,500 veterinarians since its inception.
