A Year in Review 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
iii
A Letter from the AMC Leadership
Dear Friends and Supporters, 2020 was a challenging year for the Animal Medical Center, as it was for individuals and institutions around the world. But for AMC, the pandemic reminded us of the importance of the underlying principle that fuels our work—the human-animal bond. Now more than ever, in these times of isolation and uncertainty, we take comfort in the companionship of our beloved pets. Consequently, the need for AMC—to provide compassionate and collaborative care to animals, to train veterinarians, to find new treatments and prevention methods through research, and to educate the public about animal health—became more apparent than ever. As an essential service, AMC remained open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, never straying from our commitment to provide life-saving veterinary care for animals in the New York metropolitan area and beyond. From the beginning, and
throughout the pandemic, we were committed to three goals: keep our employees and clients safe; adhere to our mission of providing care to animals in need; and ensure the long-term financial stability of AMC. As the weeks went by and the pandemic eased in the metropolitan area, we were able to bring back all 20 of our services, although we continued to limit entry to the building and to comply with safety protocols. We are incredibly proud of our staff—our healthcare heroes—whose dedication to the health and well-being of their patients never faltered and whom we honored at our virtual 2020 Top Dog Gala on December 8th. We are also tremendously grateful for, and sincerely humbled by, our donors, whose commitment was exemplified by their generosity throughout 2020, whether responding to our emergency COVID-19 appeal, supporting our virtual events, or maintaining their membership in one of our donor societies. This steadfast support in 2020 also included additional commitments to our Gift of Love capital campaign, which will allow us to move forward with the planned expansion and renovation of the hospital. This work, which will modernize our 60-year-old facility and make room for our ever-expanding services, is essential to the future of AMC and will ensure our ability to remain at the forefront of veterinary medicine for years to come. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and staff of AMC, we invite you to read through these pages to learn more about our work in 2020. We also extend our sincere thanks to our partners and supporters for making it all possible. With gratitude,
Robert Liberman Chairman
Kate Coyne President and Chief Executive Officer

Our Hospital
Founded in 1910, the Animal Medical Center (AMC) is a non-profit academic veterinary hospital dedicated to providing compassionate and collaborative care to animals and to leading the advancement of veterinary medicine through clinical research and education. AMC has a staff of 430, including over 100 veterinarians, whose combined expertise covers more than 20 specialties and services. Housed in the Elmer and Mamdouha Bobst Hospital on East 62nd Street in New York City and open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, AMC is the largest and busiest veterinary hospital in the United States, with an extraordinary volume and diversity of medical cases. In 2020, the Animal Medical Center recorded 53,759 patient visits.
2020—A Year Like No Other As an essential service, AMC remained open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, never straying from our commitment to provide life-saving veterinary care for animals in the New York metropolitan area and beyond. From the beginning, and throughout the pandemic, we were committed to three goals: keep our employees and clients safe; adhere to our mission of providing care to animals in need; and ensure the long-term financial stability of AMC. AMC senior management took concrete steps to achieve these three goals such as ensuring that our staff had the proper
protective equipment to maintain their safety; creating an outdoor waiting area (heated in the cold months and cooled in the summer) to protect clients and staff, while providing essential veterinary care; right-sizing operations to preserve financial resources; applying for appropriate grants and loans to secure our financial standing; and launching a successful emergency fundraising appeal, to which our donors and clients responded with tremendous generosity and zeal. As the weeks went by and the pandemic eased in the metropolitan area, we were 5
able to bring back all 20 of our services, although we continued to limit entry to the building and to comply with safety protocols. By the end of the year, our daily caseload returned to pre-pandemic levels, with our Emergency and Critical Care service handling record case volume and demand growing among numerous other services.
Clinical staff consulted clients by phone when safety protocols prevented them from entering the building during their pet’s appointments and hospital stays.
In 2020, AMC announced the appointment of Chad West, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology) as Associate Chief Medical Officer. In this new role, Dr. West, the hospital’s longtime Head of Neurology, will provide medical leadership, and will work to align clinical and administrative priorities.
“ The knowledge, compassion and patience of the doctors and staff while discussing their findings and treatment plan confirmed that our pet was in the best of hands. The doctor called twice a day with updates and answered my many questions. I REALLY appreciate the COVID-19 precautions.” AMC client
6
As an essential service, AMC remained open throughout the pandemic. Employees in every department—clinical, client services, administration, and facilities—were truly “healthcare heroes” who worked tirelessly to ensure the best possible care for our pet patients.
“ Everyone was extremely kind and helpful—from the moment we entered the ER until we were discharged. The amount of care and precaution taken during the COVID pandemic is excellent. You are really on top of everything and the experience was orderly, prompt, and the staff compassionate and understanding.” AMC client
7
Air conditioned in the summer and heated in the winter, tents in AMC’s garage ensured comfort for pets and their owners while adhering to social distancing protocols.
“ Under the extraordinary circumstances we are all living in, the AMC made things as pleasant and easy as possible—the vet was very thorough. My little sweetheart is doing great!” AMC client
8
At the height of the pandemic in the spring, AMC loaned our ventilators to neighboring medical facilities when they were overrun with patients in need.
“ I’ve been the Chairman of the Board for over a decade and I’ve seen AMC through many ups-and-downs. Through it all, nothing has made me prouder than the way AMC has responded to the COVID-19 crisis. We can all take immense pride in the way we continue to serve the people and pets of New York City despite the immense challenges we face.” Robert Liberman Chairman
During this challenging year, AMC donors not only gave monetary support, but they provided homemade masks for our staff and sent meals and other specialty food treats to show their appreciation.
“ Thank you for supporting everyone during COVID-19. I hope this helps support you!” AMC donor

Spotlight on Services
“ Pet owners who use this new Urgent Care Fast Track have access to highly skilled, boardcertified specialists who work collaboratively across over 20 specialties and services. If one of our urgent care patients has a true emergency, as the only Level 1 veterinary trauma center in the area, we are fully equipped to treat it immediately.” Jennifer Prittie DVM, DACVECC, DACVIM (SAIM), Head of Emergency and Critical Care
Cancer Institute The Cancer Institute at the Animal Medical Center, founded in 2015 with a gift from Elaine and Kenneth Langone, is modeled after the most progressive, patient-centered human cancer hospitals in the country. The Institute takes an integrative and centralized approach to patient care, utilizing the most innovative treatments to prevent, diagnose, and care for animals with cancer. Its visionary design provides AMC’s oncology team with the optimal environment needed to diagnose and treat patients, focus on early detection, enhance outcomes, and work toward a cure for cancer through advanced research. In 2020, the Cancer Institute recorded nearly 6,000 patient visits. Research studies conducted by the Institute’s staff doctors and residents have therapeutic potential for both animal and human medicine and exemplify the groundbreaking impact of AMC’s efforts.
Emilia Saint-Amand Krimendahl Institute for Trauma Care The Emilia Saint-Amand Krimendahl Institute for Trauma Care at the Animal Medical Center is a state-of-the-art facility, providing compassionate and expert care for pets that need emergency and critical assistance. To ensure that AMC clients never have to choose between their own safety and their pet’s health, in 2020 AMC developed an Urgent Care Fast Track process, which provides access to excellent, contact-free urgent care from our ER Specialists, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our urgent care team, supervised by board-certified specialists in emergency and critical care and experienced ER staff doctors, is committed to getting pets home safely and swiftly, without clients ever needing to enter the building.
10
In September, AMC was recertified by the Veterinary Emergency Critical Care Society (VECCS) and upgraded to a Level 1 Facility. AMC is the only such facility in New York City and one of only a few in the United States that can provide total care for every aspect of the management of the small animal trauma patient. We are fully equipped to manage life-threatening traumatic injuries and staffed by experienced veterinarians with specialty training in emergency medicine. Because AMC is both a VECCS Level 1 facility as well as a specialty hospital, our patients have on-site access to experts in numerous veterinary specialties, to ensure quick and collaborative multidisciplinary care, if necessary. In partnership with the emergency room, our intensive care unit (ICU) is staffed by a team of clinicians who work alongside in-house specialists and referring veterinarians to provide the highest standard of care. Because we never close, we are able to provide round-the-clock monitoring and treatment of critically ill pets.
Rayner Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Center The Rayner Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Center was established in 2014 with a generous gift from Katharine and William Rayner. It is the mission of the Rayner Center to refine endoscopic and minimally invasive techniques currently used in human medicine to treat pets suffering from diseases of the skull, brain, and spine. By employing these advanced procedures, the Center seeks to decrease mortality rates, minimize anesthesia time, reduce hospital stays, and lower costs. The Rayner Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Center is led by Chad West, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology), Head of Neurology at AMC, and Staff Doctor John McCue, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM, Neurology). What we learn in the Rayner Minimally Invasive Neurosurgical Center is important, not only for the animals treated at AMC, but for advancing the field of veterinary medicine. In the months and years ahead, we are excited to explore additional techniques and therapies, including the use of 3-D printed surgical guides for hypophysectomy, fluorescence guided surgery, and photodynamic therapy, which show promise for further advancing the field.

Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Institute for Postgraduate Education For more than 50 years, AMC has offered veterinarians the opportunity to pursue additional training through the rigorous internship and residency programs of our Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Institute for Postgraduate Education. This invaluable educational experience allows veterinarians to reinforce, extend, and refine their clinical skills and enhance their diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities. At the Elmer and Mamdouha Bobst Hospital at AMC—with a clinical staff of 330, including 51 staff veterinarians—young veterinarians benefit from the size and diversity of AMC’s caseload and from the opportunity to participate in a collaborative learning environment under the guidance of veterinary doctors who are board-certified in multiple medical specialties.
“ We are especially proud of the accomplishments of AMC’s 2020 graduating interns and residents who completed training during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. We recognize and celebrate their bravery, strength, dedication, and passion for veterinary medicine.”
AMC initiated its internship program in 1963, and it is now one of the most competitive in the United States. Since the program’s inception, more than 2,000 veterinarians have completed internships at AMC. In 2020, AMC received nearly 250 applications for 21 internship spots. AMC offers residencies in numerous specialties including Cardiology, Dentistry, Oncology, Surgery, and Emergency and Critical Care. Each three-year residency is intended to lead to board certification. In 2020, AMC had 36 residents in various stages of their three-year clinical training programs under the direct guidance of experienced medical staff. Each AMC resident plans and executes a research project leading to a scientific manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed professional publication. Because AMC is a member of New York’s extensive biomedical community, residents benefit from research collaborations with several prominent human medical centers, including NYU Langone Health, Weill Cornell Medicine, The Rockefeller University, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Research is a fundamental component of the Animal Medical Center’s founding mission. AMC is proud to advance veterinary medicine by pioneering new discoveries and progressive treatments. Through our Caspary Research Institute, AMC veterinarians work to understand the origins of diseases, to develop preventive measures, and ultimately to achieve cures. AMC doctors conduct clinical investigations of naturally occurring diseases in pets, often in collaboration with physicians studying the same illnesses in humans, to enable more effective diagnoses, advance medical and surgical treatments, and prevent disease in animals and humans alike. More than 30 peer-reviewed research studies, authored by AMC veterinarians, and covering 12 specialty services, were published in 2020. In addition, AMC veterinarians conducted clinical trials in four areas—Cardiology, Integrative and Rehabilitative Medicine, Interventional Radiology/Interventional Endoscopy, and Oncology. These trials included several pilot studies: an assessment of the safety and effectiveness of a novel injectable gene therapy for cats with chronic kidney disease-associated anemia that replaces the function of feline erythropoietin; evaluation of thermographic imaging and manual muscle testing to assess hindlimb stress in dogs; and administration of resiniferatoxin into the bladder to manage lower urinary tract discomfort in dogs with bladder transitional cell carcinoma.

Ann and Charles Johnson One Health Institute
The Ann and Charles Johnson One Health Institute supports the One Health approach to medicine, recognizing the growing connection between the health of animals, people, and the environment. This synergism advances 21st century healthcare and helps protect and save millions of lives in our present and future generations. The Institute, which was named in 2019 in recognition of a generous gift from Ann and Charles Johnson, provides the platform from which AMC veterinarians can continue to work collaboratively through interdisciplinary research with leading New York City medical centers to improve veterinary and human medicine.
One Health Conference The 2020 virtual One Health Conference, Connecting Human and Veterinary Medicine, A Comparative Approach to the Physical Rehabilitation of Chronic Diseases, took place throughout the week of November 16- 20, rather than on just one day as the five previous in-person events had been. Since 2015, AMC, in partnership with the Clinical and Translational Science Center at Weill Cornell Medicine, has hosted this annual conference in which veterinarians and physicians come together to share information and insights that advance the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of both human and animal disease. The annual conference, which this year was hosted solely by AMC, takes place under the auspices of our Ann and Charles Johnson One Health Institute. Previous conferences have looked at comparative approaches to cancer, endocrine disease, cardiology, image–guided procedures, and environmental emergencies. Thanks to the virtual format this year, the conference and its speakers, including Dr. Leilani Alvarez, Director of the Tina Santi Flaherty Rehabilitation & Fitness Service and Head of AMC’s Integrative and Rehabilitative Medicine Department, as well as physicians from Weill Cornell Medical Center, Hospital for Special Surgery, and the Kaiser San Rafael Medical Center, attracted over 500 attendees from around the world.
“ Human health is inextricably linked to the health and well-being of animals, and never has that been more apparent than in 2020. I’m proud that AMC boardcertified veterinarians are committed to the One Health approach to medicine and routinely collaborate with researchers and doctors at leading human healthcare institutions to help improve diagnosis, treatment, prevention and, ultimately, patient outcomes.” Katherine Quesenberry CMO, DVM, MPH, DABVP (Avian), Chief Medical Officer

Usdan Institute for Animal Health Education
“ As a new and valuable component of AMC’s Usdan Institute for Animal Health Education, the Pet Health Library provides in-depth pet health information directly from our veterinarians. No other online pet health portal offers this kind of deep content in collaboration with board-certified veterinarians.” Michelle Leifer Director, Usdan Institute for Animal Health Education
The Usdan Institute for Animal Health Education aims to be the leading provider of pet health information, with the goals of deepening the public’s understanding of general animal health topics, including preventive care and general wellness; raising awareness of public health issues and concerns; and promoting the human-animal bond. With AMC’s staff of more than 100 doctors and the knowledge gained from our extensive experience, the Usdan Institute is uniquely positioned to deliver the best and most up-todate information about pet health, not only to those in New York City but across the country and around the world. Throughout 2020, the Usdan Institute served as a leading source of information on COVID-19 and pets, and routinely communicated pandemic-related updates to AMC clients and the pet-owning public through its weekly newsletter. The Institute was also able to continue its popular monthly pet health event series by moving to an online format. Following the first two events, which were held in person, the rest were offered virtually and later uploaded to AMC’s YouTube channel. Topics included: Dental Health: What You Need to Know; New Pet? Get Off to a Great Start; Recognizing Medical Emergencies in Pets; and Caring for Your Senior Pet. In 2020, the Usdan Institute expanded its offerings to include a pet health library on the AMC website: amcny.org/PetHealthLibrary. This resource provides information on commonly searched and frequently diagnosed illnesses and conditions, wellness and prevention tips, and downloadable resources. All content is verified by AMC experts and updated weekly. In April, the Institute launched a Children’s Resource series, which is also available on the AMC website: amcny.org/ResourcesForChildren.

Also new to the Usdan Institute in 2020 was a program for children ages 8-10 called AMC Vet Camp, hosted on Zoom. Two one-week sessions took place over the summer. Campers met practicing veterinarians and learned how they care for animals. Each day of the week focused on a new topic and included a fun activity that could be done at home.

AMC’s charitable programs lie at the heart of our mission to protect and strengthen the profound connection between people and their pets. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, in 2020, AMC provided nearly $5 million in charitable care. In 2020, 573 animals received nearly $2 million in free or subsidized care through our Community Funds. The remaining portion of charitable care provided by AMC includes assistance offered to other non-profit animal welfare organizations and the care of stray animals left in AMC’s custody.

The Gift of Love Capital Campaign
In 2019, AMC launched its Gift of Love capital campaign, which will result in the addition of more than 11,000 square feet of new space to the south end of the East 62nd Street facility and the renovation of more than 26,000 square feet of existing interior clinical and client space. The campaign will enable AMC to continue to provide the best possible care to its patients, while opening new possibilities for clinical research and creating an optimal environment for AMC’s residency and internship programs. Although active fundraising was suspended for a substantial portion of 2020, by the close of the year, AMC had raised more than $53 million. Construction—which was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic—is now scheduled to begin in June 2021 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
“ AMC is the standardbearer for excellence in the veterinary field, and this campaign will ensure that AMC continues to deliver world-class patient care, drive groundbreaking research, and pioneer new discoveries that are making a difference in both animal and human medicine.” Kathryn Coyne President and Chief Executive Officer
