Little Britches
Little Britches is one of the oldest, continuing youth rodeo associations in the world, with its membership ranging from kids ages 5 – 18 in 26 states across the nation. The aims and purposes of the organization are directed toward the interests of western-minded youth. It is a non-profit venture to build sound, healthy minds and bodies. To develop character, self-reliance, good sportsmanship and encouragement through competition in the great sport of rodeo. This year’s finals will take place July 21st - July 26th at the Colorado State Fairgrounds located at 101 Beulah Avenue in Pueblo Colorado. The level of competition at NLBRA events is second to none. Many collegiate rodeo athletes and a healthy number of professionals competed in Little Britches events in their younger days. Before Ty Murray became a legend by winning seven world allaround championships in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, he honed his skills in the NLBRA. Other rodeo legends that began in the NLBRA are: Butch and Rope Myers, Kristie Peterson, Cody DeMoss, Tim Segelke, Royce Ford, Marlene McRae, Cimmaron Gerke, Randy Suhn and K.C. Jones. Every sport needs a defining event, one last competition to find out once and for all who is the best. In the NLBRA, the championship contest is the National Little Britches Finals Rodeo. Every year, more than 700 of the Association’s top athletes from across the country will gather to take shots at 30 world championships. The event has an overall economic impact of more than $10.5 million with contestants visible at local restaurants, hotels, stores and tourist attractions throughout the week. Most participants are accompanied by their parents and other relatives, making the rodeo truly a family-oriented event.

Events Taking Place! Bareback Riding
One of the most physically demanding events in rodeo, bareback riding is not for just anyone. A top bareback rider must subject himself to the full brunt of a horse’s power for eight full seconds, all the while spurring the horse on every jump and enduring the immense strain on his riding arm.

The cowboy’s equipment for bareback riding is rather Spartan: It consists of a glove, chaps, dulled spurs and a unique contraption known as a bareback riggin’. The riggin’ is strapped to the horse’s withers and consists more or less of a modest-sized piece of leather and a customfitted rawhide handle, somewhat like a very stiff suitcase handle. As in saddle bronc riding, the bareback rider must “mark out” the horse at the start of the ride and keep his free hand in the air at all times. Instead of spurring from front to back, he attempts to spur the horse from about the point of the shoulders nearly up to his riggin’. The more a rider leans back and the harder he spurs, the greater his potential for a high score. However, doing so also exposes him to the full force of the horse, increasing his chances of hitting the ground early.

Pole Bending
The object of pole bending is to ride through a pattern of upright poles in the shortest possible time without toppling any of the poles. The Senior and Junior Girls and Little Wranglers compete in this event. The standard pattern is made up of six plastic poles set in rubber bases. The first pole is placed 21 feet from the start/ finish line; the other poles are placed progressively farther from the line at 21-foot intervals. The contestant rides across the line at full speed on either side of the poles until reaching the end pole. At that point, the rider turns 180 degrees and weaves through the poles. Upon reaching the pole closest to the finish line, a tight turn sends the competitor back through the poles until again reaching the far pole; and then it’s a dash to the finish line.

There is no penalty for either the horse or rider touching a pole, accidentally or otherwise, but for every pole that is knocked down the contestant is given a disastrous five-second penalty. The contestant is also disqualified for breaking the pattern.
Barrel Racing
On the surface, barrel racing sounds pretty docile. After all, a run consists of just entering the arena and running a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels. However, this event is extremely fast paced and is always a crowd favorite. The contestant enters the arena and heads toward either the left or right barrel. Most barrel racers opt for the right-hand barrel, but some horses work better if they go to the left first. After making a tight turn around the first barrel, the horse and rider rush to the barrel on the opposite side of the arena and get around it as fast as possible. After making another turn around the barrel at the far end of the arena, the contestant heads for home as fast as possible.
Winning runs are usually only separated by a few hundredths of a second; therefore, time is taken using an electronic eye. The horse trips the eye heading into the pattern then again at the conclusion of the run. The horse and/or rider may bump or even move any or all of the barrels, but an overturned barrel will cost the contestant a five-second penalty. Competitors in the Little Wrangler, Junior and Senior Girls Divisions compete in this event.

Breakaway Roping
Breakaway roping is the fastest event in rodeo and has the stats to prove it. Depending on the arena, top breakaway ropers routinely record times under the three-second mark. When the roper calls for the calf, he or she chases it down the arena and attempts to rope it around the neck with a rope that is attached to the saddle horn with a thin piece of string. Once the catch is made, the contestant simply turns loose of the rope and stops the horse. Time is taken when the calf pulls the rope loose from the saddle horn. A small piece of white cloth is also attached to the tail of the rope to help the field judge see when the rope breaks free. The contestant is disqualified if he or she manually pulls the rope free. For the catch to be legal it does not necessarily have to settle around the calf ’s neck, but it must at least pass over the animal’s nose. A breakaway roper is entitled to use a second loop in the event that the first one misses its mark, but the roper must carry two ropes to do so and the first rope cannot be broken free of the saddle horn until after the run is complete. In the NLBRA, Senior Girls, Junior Girls and Junior Boys are all eligible to compete in breakaway.
Bull Riding Bull riding is the most popular rodeo event among many fans and it is certainly the easiest to understand. Get on, nod your head, then try to keep your seat for eight seconds. Sounds easy enough, but any bull rider will tell you it’s a little more complicated than that. The rider is disqualified for being bucked off before eight seconds have elapsed, or if he touches himself, his equipment or the bull with his free hand. If he manages to stay aboard for the full eight seconds, the ride is scored by the two rough stock judges. Each judge may award up to 25 points for how hard the animal bucks and up to 25 points for how well the cowboy rides for a possible total of 100 points. The rules for the Senior and Junior Boys’ divisions are virtually the same, except that a Junior Boy is not allowed to wrap the tail of his rope around his hand and is only required to stay on for six seconds.

Steer Wrestling
While steer wrestling is known throughout the rodeo world as the “big man’s event,” top NLBRA cowboys prove that technique and determination are just as important. The run begins with a mounted cowboy in each of the two timed-event boxes. The steer wrestler—or bulldogger, as he is commonly known— begins in the box to the steer’s left. On the bulldogger’s signal, a nod of the head, the steer is released and both cowboys give chase down the arena. If the bulldogger leaves the box before the steer gets its predetermined head start, he breaks the barrier and is assessed a ten-second penalty. Once the steer wrestler is in position, he slides off the right side of his horse and grasps the steer by the horns. After he stops the steer or changes its direction, he attempts to throw the steer by using his hold on the animal’s horns. The clock stops when the steer is laying on its side with its head and all four feet pointing in the same direction.

Team Roping
As the name implies, team roping is rodeo’s only true team event. A successful run requires perfect coordination between two ropers, two horses and a steer. Both Senior and Junior divisions compete in the event in the NLBRA. The header, who begins in the roping box to the steer’s left, calls for the steer, gives it the required head start, then takes off after it. Failure to give the animal its head start adds ten seconds to the team’s time. Once the header is in range, he (or she) throws his rope in an attempt to rope the steer around the horns, the neck or a half-head (a head and neck combination). Once the catch is made, the header dallies, or wraps the tail of his rope around his saddle horn, then turns the steer in a wide arc to the left. The heeler, who up to this point has been running alongside the steer to keep it running straight, then rides in behind the steer and tries to rope both hind- legs. Once his catch is made, a dally is made and the horse is stopped. The header then pulls the slack out of both ropes and faces the heeler. The clock is stopped when both ropes are tight and the horses are facing with the steer between them. If the heeler ropes only one hind leg, a five-second penalty is assessed. If one roper misses completely, he or she is permitted to rebuild and make another attempt without penalty, but the team may use no more than three loops in a single run.
