FREE POST-SHOW TALK Fri 26 Nov Call the Box Office to book After sell-out success in London, Alan Bennett’s latest smash-hit play comes to Glasgow. Oxford 1972. Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, Death in Venice, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, W H Auden. During this imagined meeting, their first for 25 years, they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station. Deeply funny and thought-provoking, this new play reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion’s spent: ultimately, on the habit of art. 4

The team behind 2007’s The Barber of Seville returns to Scottish Opera. Internationally renowned baritone Sir Thomas Allen directs Mozart’s unstoppable masterpiece, set in the stylish world of the late 18th century. Blending breathtaking arias with over-the-top characters and chaotic humour, this is Mozart at his theatrical best. Thomas Oliemans, Figaro in The Barber of Seville, returns to the role and Scottish soprano Kate Valentine is the Countess. Francesco Corti conducts. Richard Strauss New production Sung in German with English supertitles

Set in the 1920s, this intimate and elegant comedy of manners captures the flaws and foibles of high society with Oscar Wilde-like wit, and no small hint of irony. The conductor Richard Storch and his wife, Christine, are not getting on. When Christine intercepts a love letter apparently addressed to her husband she leaps to the obvious conclusion, but has she jumped the gun? Flirtations with penniless barons, confusingly similar names, the mysterious Mitzi Meyer...it all adds up to some stormy misunderstandings and more than a little confusion. Francesco Corti conducts.

Giuseppe Verdi UK premiere Sung in Italian with English supertitles

Director Matthew Richardson brings Verdi’s tragic Rigoletto to the stage in a stylish, intelligent and theatrical production. From the aching naivety of first love to a father’s tortured realisation of his failure to protect his daughter, Verdi takes his characters from elation to despair in an opera densely packed with extraordinary arias and ensembles. English baritone Eddie Wade sings Rigoletto and Edgaras Montvidas, Nemorino in Scottish Opera’s recent production of The Elixir of Love, sings the role of the Duke. Tobias Ringborg conducts. ‘A MAGNIFICENT PRODUCTION FOR ALL AGES’ THE OBSERVER

Conceived by Ashley Page & Antony McDonald Music Sergei Prokofiev

Artistic Director Ashley Page’s spectacular version of Cinderella, one of Scottish Ballet’s most popular productions, returns to the stage this winter. Tormented by her stepmother and stepsisters, Cinderella is lost and lonely, until a simple act of kindness summons her Fairy Godmother who sends her on a magical journey to find happiness. Showcasing sumptuous designs from award-winning designer Antony McDonald, this vivid reworking of the much-loved fairytale is transported to a decadent Vivienne Westwoodmeets-Andy Warhol 18th Century France, swept up in Prokofiev’s romantic score, performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Scottish Ballet’s exceptional dancers bring these unforgettable characters to life with genuine emotion and plenty of wit, making Cinderella a fantastic feast of classical and modern dance as original as it is visually striking. A mustsee production - don’t wait until midnight to secure your seats!

AN EXCITING NEW PRODUCTION FROM MATTHEW BOURNE’S NEW ADVENTURES A New Adventures Production by arrangement with Glasgow Theatres and Re:bourne

Film Created by Alan Stockdale Sound Design by Paul Groothuis Lighting Design by Chris Davey Set and Costume Design by Lez Brotherston Music by Terry Davies Co-Directed and Choreographed by Scott Ambler Devised and Directed by Matthew Bourne A New Adventures Production

‘THE UK’S MOST POPULAR AND MOST UNCLASSIFIABLE DANCE COMPANY’ SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

In a unique collaboration with the Theatre Royal Glasgow, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures returns with a powerful new dance theatre adaptation based on the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. In this thrilling new production the action is transferred from deserted island to deserted theatre. A group of schoolboys find themselves abandoned. With no adults around they start to create their own rules and to build their own civilization. As time passes, the rituals become more disturbing as dark superstitions take hold. Order finally breaks down and blood is spilt as Ralph, Piggy, Jack and the boys grapple with the ‘beast within’ and the story builds to its thrilling climax. With a cast of New Adventures dancers and local young people, Golding’s iconic characters are brought to life with raw energy, emotional intensity and electrifying performances. Chilling, beautiful and hugely entertaining, the piece will enthral die-hard Bourne fans as much as a generation of new audiences. New Adventures’ Lord of the Flies follows the phenomenal success of Swan Lake, Nutcracker!, The Car Man, and Edward Scissorhands. Matthew Bourne’s directing and choreography credits also include the West end smash hits Oliver! and Mary Poppins. 12

This is an Inspiring Communities project which has received Lottery Funding from Creative Scotland.

ROBERT POWELL stars in

The internationally acclaimed production The Shaolin Warriors is returning with a brand new show before embarking on a new European tour. This is a fully choreographed spectacular that features 22 professionally trained Kung-Fu Masters; audiences will be amazed and thrilled by their death defying Kung-Fu disciplines such as qigong, animal imitation boxing, drunken boxing and fighting with 18 kinds of dangerous traditional weapons. FRI 27 & SAT 28 MAY 7.30pm

In a life devoted to alcohol, gambling and women, the ever-charming Jeffrey Bernard distinguished himself by excess. From Bernard’s colourful contributions to the Spectator’s Low Life column, fellow Fleet Street legend Keith Waterhouse created this gloriously funny and occasionally poignant production. Robert Powell plays the tour-de-force title role and is best known for playing Jesus in Jesus of Nazareth and Richard Hannay in The 39 Steps.

Created by the original writers of the classic BBC TV series, the Prime Minister Jim Hacker, his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby and his Private Secretary Bernard Woolley are back in this hilarious new play. In a world of spin, Blackberrys and ‘sexed up’ dossiers, the PM is staring disaster in the face. The country is on the brink of financial meltdown and the Government’s only apparent salvation comes from a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan. Will Jim Hacker and his team of advisors be able to rescue the country from the edge?
