Andrew Lister General Manager

Milton Keynes Theatre is being transported back to a bygone era this autumn with two spectacular shows that celebrate the allure and opulence of the 1930s. We are incredibly excited to be hosting our first ever World Premiere at the end of August, with the all-singing, all-dancing stage production of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ Hollywood classic Top Hat. Taking on the eminent roles of Jerry Travers and Dale Tremont will be Holby City heartthrob Tom Chambers, and West End leading lady Summer Strallen. They proved their dancing chops in May when they held a dance masterclass here at the theatre for a selection of Group bookers and the local and national press. Showing just why he won Strictly Come Dancing in 2008, and why she is taking leading roles in The Sound of Music and Love Never Dies, Tom and Summer certainly acquired a few more fans that day, and we can’t wait to welcome them back later this year! The glitz and glamour won’t stop there as we welcome back English National Ballet in November as it embarks on the first-ever UK tour of its acclaimed production of Strictly Gershwin. A dazzling celebration of the big band era featuring ballet, tap, ballroom, jazz, and over 100 artists with a live orchestra, it’s no wonder it has charmed London audiences during a sell-out season at the Royal Albert Hall.

Directed by David Grindley

By Eduardo De Filippo A new version by Mike Poulton directed by sean mathias

Based on the author’s own experience in the trenches, this gripping tale about ordinary men in extraordinary circumstances celebrates humour and courage, engaging audiences with a compelling insight of how in the face of adversity, the human spirit will always triumph.

Direct from Chichester Festival Theatre, Ian McKellen makes a much anticipated return to Milton Keynes Theatre to play alongside Michael Pennington in this brand new version of Eduardo De Filippo’s The Syndicate. With the help of a ‘Godfather’, honest young Antonio Barracano is smuggled out of Naples to hide in New York after killing a brutal night-watchman. When he returns to Naples with newly acquired wealth and a reputation for ruthlessness, he uses his status to quash his conviction, making it his life’s work to provide a form of rough justice for the city’s criminals who have no other access to law. He rules the Naples underbelly with a rod of iron but when a respectable but poor young man decides to murder his father and comes to Don Antonio for advice, the Neapolitan ‘Godfather’ emerges from the shadows to make the young man’s father an offer he can’t refuse. The comedy grows blacker as ‘respectable’ Naples collides with its criminal underworld. 6

Ben Brown’s political thriller takes us behind the doors of Number 10 during three of the most pivotal days in British history, when, extraordinarily, giving in to Hitler was considered by some to be a ‘viable option’. Having urgently assembled the British war cabinet, the new Prime Minister is suddenly confronted with an intense game of political chess between peace treaty supporters and its opponents. Divided on whether to negotiate terms through Mussolini or escalate the battle against fascism alone, one man has to make a monumental decision, which will shape the future of the free world. One of the UK’s most recognised and versatile actors, Warren Clarke has been starring on stage, television and the big screen for over four decades, with a wide range of credits such as: Coronation Street; Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange; Clint Eastwood’s Firefox; Blackadder; Bleak House; The Invisibles; three series of Down to Earth (starring opposite Pauline Quirke) and of course playing Dalziel in no less than 12 series of the multi-award-winning BBC TV hit Dalziel and Pascoe, which ran for 11 years. Three Days in May, directed by Alan Strachan, embarks on a strictly limited national tour prior to the West End, which sees Warren Clarke lead an all-star cast in his return to the stage for the first time in over a decade.

the Madness of George iii Directed by Christopher Luscombe During his reign, George III fathered 15 children, founded the Royal Academy of Arts, Great Britain and Ireland became the United Kingdom and Britain lost its American colonies. In spite of all this, he is best-remembered today for his bouts of unbridled lunacy when it seemed that the future of the very monarchy was at stake. David Haig, most recently seen in West End hit Yes, Prime Minister, plays King George. One of the UK’s most versatile actors, his numerous stage credits include West End and Broadway productions of Donkey’s Years and Art as well as an Olivier Award winning performance in My Country’s Good. He is joined by acclaimed actor and writer Clive Francis (The Reluctant Debutante, Enron) and directed by Christopher Luscombe, who has achieved considerable success directing Alan Bennett’s work including Enjoy in the West End and The History Boys.
