d itor’s thoughts... I

‘s Spring and I am so ready for some normal, warm weather! The rain, sleet, snow, warm weather, then gusting winds are enough to drive you insane. And of course I never watch the weather so I’m always wearing a short sleeve shirt when it snows or I’m having a good hair day when it rains!

S

pring is starting to bring out new events and activites around town. The new football team “Amarillo Venom” , formerly the Dusters, has started their season. And our local Derby Girls, formerly the Rt. 66 Roller Derby Girls, now the Randall County Derby Dames will have their first bout April 17th. If you haven’t seen the roller derby girls you should check it out! A Beatles Tribute band and the Bob and Tom Comedy Tour will be coming through in April.

If you know of any upcoming events that you would like listed be sure and email them to us. I’m always amazed to see all of the entertainment we have in town and it’s easy when you can find it all listed in one place! We would love to hear from our readers what you like and don’t like about The Scene and how we can improve it to be your one source for all of your entertainment needs.

CHRISTIANS AGAINST SUBSTANCE ABUSE

In a unique program new to Amarillo, women with substance abuse problems gather for support every week. “Christians Against Substance Abuse” or CASA, is a great alternative for women who want to rely on God for their higher power. They have the opportunity to attend a faith based substance abuse program and renew their faith in God’s healing power. “Since this program is for women, it give women a chance to talk about issues related to substance abuse such as sexual abuse, spousal abuse, and relationship problems that they might be reluctant to talked about in a mixed group,” says Lola Brownlee, Licensed Professional Counselor. Ms. Brownlee is a facilitator of CASA meetings. CASA is a faith based 13 step program, similar to other 12-step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, but with an emphasis on GOD and hope. “We want this to be a group where women can feel free to discuss those issues that sometimes remain hidden and continue to create guilt and feelings of inadequacy. Women just have some different needs than men. We pray that this CASA program can meet some of those needs,” says Ms. Brownlee.

m ovie review... he said... If you're like most Americans, and you once financed an entire vacation with your Credit Cards at 40 percent interest, then Repo Men will hit a little too close to home. Repo Men is a thrilling, bloody, organ-ripping sci-fi flick about repossessing body parts, even if that means killing you in the process. Jude Law stars as Remy, a repo man working for The Union, the company that makes the artificial organs that have revolutionized health care in the future. The organs are overpriced, and patients are "cornered" into buying, sometimes going black market. Remy is hurt badly on the job, requiring him to get one of the artificial organs put into himself. Suddenly, he's one of the customers in the system, owned by the company he works for. He can't pay and he ends up hunted by his best friend. “Mind Numbing Gore! The action gets pretty good and about 99% of the I give it 3 out of 5 population will be grossed out at some point during the stars!” film. By the end of the movie you don't know whether to laugh or throw up. That fine line is what makes the movie fun.

uli

she said... I was intrigued by the the unique and twisted concept of Repo Men from it’s description. I haven’t seen Jude Law in a movie in a long time (who looks good by the way!) Repo Men takes off running from the beginning and the action and suspense doesn’t stop. For some reason people hiding under the bed scare me, but blood and guts don’t bother me at all. So if you are a little squeamish, don’t go see this movie. But if bloody action scenes and a little gore don’t bother you, you don’t want to miss this one. Jude Law starts out as a desensitized “Repo Man” who retrieves mechanical organs from people who are “past due” on their payments. Yet when he is in an accident and receives an artificial heart, he no longer has the “heart” for the job. He starts to see things from the “Even though ”The other side. When he can’t do his job to pay for his heart, Critics” hated this he is hunted by his childhood friend, Forest Whitaker. movie, I loved it... I have to say I was on the edge of my seat through the gore and all!” entire movie! And not only was there an unexpected “twist” in the middle of the movie...the one at the end blew me away! I was nauseous, it was great.

cristi

Uli and I have been working together for almost 7 years now. We’ve become good friends through the years. Well...more like brother and sister because we have fun picking on each other! He’ll tell me to quit being bossy and I’ll tell him to put his iPod back on and “zip it”! One thing we have in common is our love of movies! So we thought it would be fun to review movies together. So we came up with “He Said...She Said”!

Repo Men Open In Theaters Now Runtime: 1 hr. 51 min. Rated: R Genres: Sci-Fi Action, Science Fiction. Strong bloody violence, grisly images, language and some sexuality/nudity Cast: Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, Alice Braga, Liev Schreiber, Carice van Houten, Chandler Canterbury In the futuristic action-thriller Repo Men, humans have extended and improved our lives through highly sophisticated and expensive mechanical organs created by a company called The Union. The dark side of these medical breakthroughs is that if you don’t pay your bill, The Union sends its highly skilled repo men to take back its property, with no concern for your comfort or survival. Jude Law plays Remy, one of the best organ repo men in the business. When he suffers a cardiac failure on the job, he awakens to find himself fitted with the company’s top-of-theline heart-replacement, as well as a hefty debt. But a side effect of the procedure is that his heart’s no longer in the job. When he can’t make the payments, The Union sends its toughest enforcer, Remy’s former partner Jake (Academy Award® winner Forest Whitaker), to track him down.

Dear Gossip Girls, My husband and I have been married for 2 years. I have a 6 year old son from a previous marriage. His dad has his regular visitation and is very flexible and helpful if I ever need him to watch our son anytime. My ex-husband and I had an ugly custody battle during our divorce when my son was first born. He's grown up alot and has become a good dad. We talk on the phone alot, mostly about my son but we do talk alot about what is going on in his life. This makes my current husband furious. I've tried to explain that I want to know what is going on in my exes life to make sure my son is being taken care of, but my husband sees it as a total sign of disrespect. I consider "talking" to another guy cheating so I'm torn between watching over my son and not upsetting my husband or giving him cause to not trust me. Debby: As long as your current is allowed to listen to the conversations and understand you have no romantic interest in your ex-husband he should understand your son comes first. Just make sure he knows about every meeting and conversation. Cristi: There was a reason you got a divorce in the first place. If there were issues with your first husband that would cause you concern, than your son's security comes first. I think if you let your current husband know everything you are discussing with your ex-husband he should support you. If he has trust issues even when you are being totally honest with him than I think it’s something he has to work out or it will escalade beyond just your ex! Leslie: I think your husband needs to understand you both share a child together. So he needs to grow up sounds like he has some insecurities.

I’ve been wanting a boob job for a while now. Of course my boyfriend is all for it. My friends and family are totally against it and think I'm doing it just for my boyfriend. They try to slide little comments about how dangerous it is, people will only look at my boobs from now on and I'm beautiful just the way I am, blah, blah. I got a good tax refund that I want to use, which of course my mom says could be put to better use. I've always been self conscience about my chest, but I don't want to have to hear it from my family for the rest of my life! Leslie: I say if you want a boob job get it. Who cares what they say your paying for it and they need not worry about it. Cristi: I think that if you have done your research, spoke with at least two doctors and this is something that would make you feel better about yourself, you should go for it! It’s your body and you have to live in it. I think if you don’t go Anna Nichole Smith with them, your family will be surprised at how nice they look and how good they make YOU feel. Cherisa: If you go for it and get the boob job, I bet your family and friends will react differently then you think. Once they see that it makes you happy and more confident, the negative views about the situation will dissolve. Debby: How old are you, 16! Be true to yourself.

I’m in my forties and have just recently gotten a divorce. My children are grown and I feel like I've got a new sense of freedom! I've always wanted a tattoo and I feel like I'm finally ready to get one that symbolizes my new life. My children are horrified and my co-workers think it sounds trashy. Now I'm not sure, I think I'm old enough to make my own decision but I know it's permanent! Cherisa: It is permanent, so be sure and get what you want. Do your research and try some of those temporary tattoos first, you can always get something that is hidden, that your co-workers and kids won't see. Personally, I think that is empowering to get something permanent that symbolizes an important time in your life. Cristi: I don’t think there is anything wrong with you getting a tattoo to symbolize an evolution in your life. Just remember it is permanent so don’t get a “trendy” tattoo. And think about your lifestyle, if you’re a professional you don’t want to get a tattoo on your ankle where you can’t ever wear a skirt again! If you do get one, then you have an occasion where you need to cover it up, you should check out www.tattoocamo.com. They carry all day tattoo concealer that could come in handy. And don’t think about the cost when it comes to a tattoo, just make sure you find a reputable artist that you feel comfortable with. Debby: Your the one that has to live with it, not them. Leslie: I have tattoos and find nothing wrong with them. Just be sure to put them in places that when need to be they can be covered.
