The Dean’s voice

Michael I. Luger

MBS’s network of alumni now numbers over 40,000. Other major business schools have large alumni bases as well, but I challenge any other school to claim a more diverse and accomplished population. We are enormously proud of everyone who has spent time with us; they are a good reason to choose to attend MBS. Our students and delegates become part of this network and gain access to outstanding business and management professionals who have a similar pedigree, in a range of areas and specialisations, at various levels and in hundreds of different locations around the world.

And Paul, Bob, Michael and Vincent are among the members of MBS’s Advisory Board.

Our alumni hail from 161 different countries. Almost 32% are from countries outside the UK, the largest concentrations in Europe and China/East Asia (10% each) and then North America (over 5%).

Outside of the finance sector, Mark Byers and Barry Jones have been senior partners in major consulting firms, whilst Peter Casey is chairman of the well-known infrastructure company, the Casey Group, and Roger Crook is CEO of DHL. Many of the most prominent management scholars and business school deans, especially in European universities, have an MBS doctorate.

As a full-service school, we have alumni from a wide-range of programmes, including at the undergraduate level (26.4%), MBA (24.2%), post-graduate taught (19.8%), Executive Education (11%), PhD (3.6%), and diplomas and certificates (3.1%). The danger of citing some of our alumni for their accomplishments is that there are too many to mention in a short piece like this! Among the best known are Sir Terry Leahy, former CEO of Tesco; Paul Skinner, former CEO of Rio Tinto and now chairman of Infrastructure UK; Bob Herz, former chair of the US Financial Accounting Standards Board; Michael Parker, former CEO of both Dow Chemical and BNFL; and Vincent Chan, the CEO and founder of Spring Capital Asia, located in Hong Kong. Sir Terry, Paul, Bob, and Vincent have all won the University’s Outstanding Alumni of the Year Award.

Many of the most prominent figures in financial centres around the world are MBS alumni, including Damaris Albarran, vice-president of BNY Mellon and Pik Ha Chan who is senior vice-president and head of corporate communications at the Fubon Bank in Hong Kong. Tom Attwood, David Gregson, Jeremy Coller and John Lovering are among the many alumni who have been prominent in private equity in the UK and elsewhere.

Our mission is “to transform the lives of our students so they can transform the organisations in which they work and the communities in which they live.” I am proud that, as alumni, they are helping to transform their companies and communities. That was driven home by the TV show “The Secret Millionaire” which recently featured one of our alumni, Piers Linney, partner of Outsourcery. Piers spent 10 days in Wolverhampton working with a number of charities, some of which were based inside Brinsford Young Offenders’ Institution. So welcome all to Network, our alumni magazine. And when you think network, think proud!

Original Thinking Applied Manchester Business School rises to world 29 in latest ranking MBS was placed 29th in the world by The Financial Times in its ranking of the world’s leading business schools for 2011. This significant rise means that Manchester’s 18-month full-time MBA programme is now placed 11th in Europe and 4th in the UK, confirming its position as one of the world’s toughest and most rewarding programmes. Crucially The FT also rates Manchester’s Doctoral programme as the best in the world. The rise in the rankings reflects the excellent salary progression Manchester Business School’s MBAs can achieve three years after completing the programme. The FT revealed that they can expect a 111% salary increase. The FT’s findings echo Bloomberg Business Week’s recent ranking of business schools, in which MBS is rated third in the world for return on investment; as does Forbes which consistently highlights MBS’ excellent ROI. The 2011 FT ranking also highlights Manchester’s continuing strengths which have been evident over several years: • 13 in the world for career progression • 14 in the world for international mobility • 19 in the world for international experience The FT rankings are commonly used as a measure of the quality of education by business schools, faculty and prospective students. However, the outcome of the survey itself largely depends on graduates volunteering their time to complete the questions. Thank you to those of you who have taken the time to complete the surveys, over the years.

Every year, we invite graduates and other original thinkers to share knowledge with students, faculty members and alumni of Manchester Business School. This past year has been no different. We welcomed alumnus Sir Terry Leahy, outgoing CEO of Tesco and alumnus John Dembitz, senior partner at Dembitz & Associates. Other high profile speakers include His Excellency Dr Federico Cuello Camilo, Dominican Ambassador to the UN and Mark Reckitt, former chief strategy officer at Cadbury.

Cadbury’s could have done more to resist Kraft takeover Cadbury’s would have been in a better position to resist the Kraft takeover if it had more UK investors, a former chief strategy officer to the chocolate giant admitted during a visit to Manchester Business School in February 2011. Mark Reckitt who was at Cadbury between 2004 and 2010, told an audience that the company was “overweight with US investors and underweight with UK investors”.

more than 30% of Cadbury and were thought to be sellers at lower levels than the long term UK holders. With hindsight I believe we could have worked harder to win the confidence of the UK institutions that were not in Cadbury or were underweight.” “It was a highly emotional occasion and most of us still find it difficult to talk about the various calls and conversations we had with Cadbury managers and colleagues that day. At the end of the day we left physically and emotionally drained.”

During the bid from Kraft this position got worse, he added, with a number of investors selling part of their Cadbury holdings in order to reduce the risk. “Many of these shares were bought by hedge funds,” he explained. “By the end of the bid, hedge funds accounted for

Giving an insight into the frantic negotiations leading to the takeover, Reckitt discussed the role of the media, the day the Cadbury team realised the board were likely to accept Kraft’s offer and the key lessons for UK listed companies that may be at risk of takeover.

Sir Terry helps a little longer

Following the lecture, Sir Terry chatted to MBS students about their hopes and aspirations.

Sir Terry Leahy, who recently stepped down as CEO of Tesco, came to Manchester Business School to deliver a lecture on retail marketing strategy. Sir Terry (BSc (Hons) Management Sciences 1977) has delivered an annual lecture to retail marketing students for the past 22 years. Peter McGoldrick, Tesco professor of retailing at MBS, presented Sir Terry with a silver plate to thank him for inspiring students over the years.

We would like to express our thanks to Sir Terry for giving up his time over the years and we would also like to extend our best wishes for the future.

Eddie Davies chats with current students

Each year, Outstanding Alumni Awards are presented to former students who have achieved distinction within their professions, have provided exemplary service to the University, or have made an outstanding contribution of a personal humanitarian nature. In 2010, John Lovering was the recipient of this award; he obtained an MBA from Manchester Business School in 1975. John has been associated with many private equity owned companies. In February 2011, he stepped down as chairman of the pub chain, Mitchells & Butlers Plc whose leading portfolio of brands includes Harvester, Toby Carvery, Crown Carveries, Vintage Inns, All Bar One, O’Neill’s, and Nicholson’s amongst others. His previous roles include the chairmanship of Debenhams plc where he retired after seven years at the helm, Homebase Ltd where he led one of the most successful European retail buy-outs ever, Somerfield Stores Ltd, Fitness First Ltd, The Laurel Pub Company Ltd, Odeon Cinemas Ltd, The Peacock Group plc, and Birthdays Group Ltd. He joined Go Outdoors, the outdoor clothing and equipment chain, as chairman in August 2010. At the time of going to press, it was announced that Vincent Chan, CEO and founder of Spring Capital Asia, is the recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Award 2011.

Opening of new Finance Zone A generous donation from Eddie Davies OBE, owner of Bolton Wanderers Football Club, has funded a Finance Zone at the Eddie Davies Library at Manchester Business School. Eddie Davies, who has an honorary doctorate from The University of Manchester, officially opened the Finance Zone on Friday 4 March 2011. This new addition to the library will give MBS’ students, academics and researchers instant access to both live and historical financial information - such as trading prices on the global stock exchange and a premium range of 25 financial databases including, for the first time, Bloomberg Professional. The financial data will be used for both academic research and will help equip students for future careers in the finance industry. Eddie Davies said: “MBS has an excellent reputation for innovation in business education and I’m delighted to support this initiative, which I hope will inspire business leaders of the future.” This is the latest project that Eddie Davies has supported during his long-standing relationship with the School.

Chair of the MBS Global Alumni Council, Jerry Green presents John Lovering with the Outstanding Alumni Award. Professor Michael Luger, far left.

Management and Business Fifty Years on: a conference in recognition of Grigor McClelland This one-day conference took place on Friday 8 April 2011 to recognise the lifetime achievements of Manchester Business School’s first director. Professor McClelland’s vision is credited with encouraging MBS to become one of the first schools to introduce project-based learning, now commonly known as The Manchester Method. The 70 delegates joined distinguished keynote speakers from a variety of academic institutions, such as Sir Geoffrey Owen from LSE and Professor Tony Cockerill from the University of Cambridge to review management related issues from the past 50 years. To advance current thinking, guests also considered likely management and business developments in the future. The event was chaired by Felicity Goodey CBE DL, a former senior BBC correspondent and presenter. As the conference closed, Professor McClelland was presented with a book containing messages from Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and President of the Board of Trade, as well as many graduates who had been taught during Professor McClelland’s tenure. Spotlight on scholarships

As an alumnus, I have already been involved as an ambassador for my country, Brazil. I can show potential candidates how they can benefit from studying at MBS.

Valdemir Oliveira - doctoral sponsorship from Jardine Lloyd Thompson

Valdemir Oliveira

Valdemir Oliveira, 40, just can’t get enough of Manchester Business School. “Choosing MBS was part of a plan that I had for so many years. I went to an MBA fair in Sao Paulo in 2003. I spoke to someone from MBS and they seemed approachable and friendly”. Valdemir came to the UK to undertake his MBA in 2006 and thanks to sponsorship from Jardine Lloyd Thompson, the international group of risk specialists and employee benefits consultants, he is still in Manchester. Valdemir started his PhD on value co-creation in 2010. “There’s a lot of buzz about this at the moment, and it is very intellectually stimulating. At first, I was going to be looking at the area of quality service, but after I had done a preliminary literature review, I suggested this customer-value based topic.

08

Having had difficulty finding work following his MBA, sponsorship enabled Valdemir to study without the burden of added financial pressures. “The economy was in bad shape, which meant that there was a lack of interesting MBA jobs”. Little did Valdemir know how he would appreciate the benefits of sponsorship, beyond the scope of his own project. “Sponsorship is an important initiative that can actually help during a financial crisis; it can help to overcome the constraints faced by the economic downturn, because of the exchange of knowledge. Working with a company and a university allows both to benefit; the university can exercise their expertise and the company benefits by enabling them to apply this understanding to a corporate environment”. The benefits that a longer study can have to the sponsor company can also not be underestimated. “There is such depth of assessment done, that it really gives them the opportunity to see things through the eyes of an outsider”. Looking to the future, how does Valdemir see himself giving back to MBS? “As an alumnus, I have already been involved as an ambassador for my country, Brazil. I can show potential candidates how they could benefit from studying at MBS. After this experience, I will certainly be able to contribute in other areas such as training, lecturing and researching”.

Spotlight on scholarships

Andrew Ko - doctoral sponsorship from O2 “You could say it’s probably the least academic but the most fun”, is Andrew Ko’s description of the PhD that he is undertaking at MBS. While it may be a lighter topic than other doctorates, he hopes that his chosen field of mobile music advertising will help to deliver a more relevant mobile advertising experience for users. Andrew is convinced that fate played a role in his decision to study at MBS. “It was because of Professor Peter Kawalek; I took a course with him - I only took it because I couldn’t get onto another course; a fact that he‘s now well aware of. “The first thing he ever said in class was that this is a course about social media, it changes every hour. So I may know something about this topic, but because there are many of you and only one of me, I am open to suggestions about what you want to cover. This was the first time that I had heard a professor say that”. “I had the foundation for the idea of my PhD, but as my supervisor, Professor Kawalek put an academic spin on it”. In a break from the norm, the proposal wasn’t formed by the sponsor, but by Professor Kawalek and then pitched to 02. “This all came about by coincidence, Professor Kawalek had recently met the CEO of O2, Ronan Dunne, who spoke about working with MBS”. Thankfully O2 were interested in the proposal and made it possible for Andrew and his young family to stay together. “The funding has allowed me to pursue something that I really love - thinking of new ideas in the mobile space. It has allowed us to move here from Canada and it’s helped me to concentrate on my studies, as I know that my family are taken care of”.

The study deals with human behaviour and responses to stimuli and mood. Andrew is building an iPhone application to collect data for the research, which to his knowledge hasn’t been done before in this academic area. It means that the findings can be based on real time data. “Mobile is the future, so it’s good contributing in a field that will be a big part of people’s lives”. So what has been the highlight of the doctorate so far? He says “the funding from O2 has allowed me to have a connection with them. Having this direct line to a company is something that other students usually struggle with”. Andrew sums up his gratitude to O2 with a simple message, “thank you for the opportunities”. Alumni Weekend 2011

For over 30 years, Manchester Business School has been hosting inspirational business leaders from across the world, bringing together alumni, students and the business community to listen to thought provoking lectures and providing networking opportunities. The 2011 series - hosted in association with The Royal Bank of Scotland - commenced in March with Richard Baker, chairman of Virgin Active plc, DFS Limited and Nectar, who spoke on the subject of ‘Lessons in leadership’. Richard reflected on the different learning experiences that he had taken from his previous roles and shed light on some of the mistakes that he made during his varied career. This lecture was contrasted by ‘Organisational spirituality…or finding your corporate soul’ which was delivered by Dawn Gibbins, secret millionaire and philanthropreneur, Barefoot Foundation. Dawn appeared in the popular Secret Millionaire TV series in the UK, going undercover in a deprived area of Bristol.

The reinvention of corporations was the focus for Mark Loughridge, who is currently senior vice president and chief financial officer at IBM, where he has been an employee since 1977. The final lecture was presented by Vivienne Cox, whose career has centred on the renewable energy sector. She enthralled the audience with ‘A perspective on the energy markets’ when she visited the School at the end of June.
