One of my favorite pieces of advice is “if you are upset, go do something about it.” I have carried this piece of advice with me throughout my life. If I catch myself complaining, I stop and remind myself to “do something about it.”

BY M E L I SSA KOC H M E R R I A M, E E | N AT I ON AL P RES I D EN T

My family has spent most of this winter at home, trying to avoid the cold and sickness surrounding us. These last few months have us looking forward to warmer temperatures, especially to the spring and summer months. I get excited when I think about summer time. Summer for my family means swimming, baseball, no schedules, sleeping in, popsicles, playing in the backyard and family time. For me, summer also includes attending Alpha Sigma Alpha’s National Convention & Leadership Conference. The opportunity to spend time with my sisters in a fun location has been a highlight every other summer for the last 20 years. My love of national convention began when I attended my first one as a collegian. I volunteered to join two other chapter sisters and our advisor for the 1998 national convention in Dallas, TX. I was eager to go because I love a good road trip, treasure spending time with my sisters and am enthusiastic about Alpha Sigma Alpha. The experience was all that I hoped it would be and more. I was in awe of every aspect of the week from the business meetings, to interacting with past national presidents, to being a part of the Sanctuary Degree Service and to celebrating the Fourth of July with my sisters. It was phenomenal to interact with women who were at different stages of their membership. I met women from other chapters who I instantly connected with, sharing ideas and experiences. My first convention was significant as it showed me that membership was more than four years and Alpha Sigma Alpha was so much bigger than my chapter at Emporia State University. It also sparked a passion in me to connect with my sisters in this way as much as possible. So much so that I have not missed a convention since going to that first one in 1998! Every convention I have attended has been unforgettable, each has brought a unique experience. From learning the correct way to address alumnae from Sidney Allen (“knee or nay, but never nigh”) to announcing our partnership with Girls on the Run with

its founder, Molly Barker, to reuniting with my fellow leadership consultants when I became national president…each memory has left a lasting impression in my life. I fully expect Rise, our upcoming national convention & leadership conference in Phoenix, AZ, this July, to be no different. It will personally be momentous as it will be my last one as national president, but it also will be a milestone for Alpha Sigma Alpha as it is our 50th national convention. One of the coolest things about national convention is that it is the largest gathering of Alpha Sigma Alpha women- with more than 500 sisters in attendance. Together this summer we will: ngage in fabulous workshops and participate in a hands-on E service opportunity. Celebrate the milestones and accomplishments of the Sorority and look forward to the future by unveiling our new strategic plan for 2018-22. Recognize the shining stars in Alpha Sigma Alpha as we honor individuals, chapters and past leaders. Make history as we install the leaders of our organization, officially present the newest chapters with their charters and make changes to the national bylaws. You will not want to miss this life-changing experience. The speakers will be energizing and ritual services will be inspiring. There is no better reminder of why you are member of this amazing organization. Plan to join me as we create memories and Rise in Phoenix! In ASA,

BY LEXI PATTERSON, QC

The Tau Tau Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha was reinstalled on Nov. 4, 2017, at Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS. The installation festivities started with a sisterhood breakfast that was held at the university. The communications committee read congratulatory notes from members across the nation to the newly formed chapter. Following the breakfast, the charter members participated in the Sanctuary Degree Service and the Service for the Installation of a New Chapter. The women from Eta Eta Chapter at Pittsburg State University, KS, served as their sponsors.

Phoenix of Alpha Sigma Alpha | Winter 2018

In the evening, Tau Tau Chapter had their installation banquet at Smoky Hill Country Club. The women were joined by family and friends to celebrate their successes and accomplishments. The keynote speaker at the banquet was Teresa Clounch, Ph.D., assistant vice president for student affairs and student life at Fort Hays State University. Dr. Clounch, a sorority woman herself, shared her personal sorority experience and the amazing opportunities and skills that Tau Tau Chapter women will receive from being a part of Alpha Sigma Alpha. The night ended with the chapter receiving various gifts from the national organization and the unveiling of the charter.

BUSINESS

As a female in the business world, it’s important to surround yourself with like-minded and empowering women. I’m passionate about growing as a young professional by ways of reading, learning about other cultures, and acting as a mentor to others.

I am passionate about the work that I do because it helps the people who truly are in need of it the most. When individuals are abusing public assistance, it makes it hard for those who actually need the help to receive it fairly and without stigma. By holding those accountable who break the law and abuse the system, I believe it is helping make a difference in the community.

The amount of culture, knowledge of design and skills acquired over time contributes to my capacity to provide original, high-quality designs and solutions. It is this quest for culture, knowledge and skills — capable of filling a lifetime — that make my passion for design grow and keep the fire of creativity alive.

I have always been passionate about politics and government. I believe that my generation, most importantly, must be educated on issues happening in our country and around the world. It's amazing how laws and legislation trickle down to affect our daily lives yet a lot of people remain uninformed. Many people tend to complain about what is happening with the price of higher education, increase in interest rates for student loans, increase in federal and property taxes, etc. Yet when called upon to run for local government, most will say no. It is crucial, especially for women, to be more vocal in their communities and truly stand up for what they believe in, no matter the political affiliation. I have learned over the past few years from my local involvement that millennials' ideas and complaints, no matter their political affiliation, are nearly always the same. I strongly believe that millennials working together will bring solutions to a lot of today's issues.

My passion for higher education, student development, and the fraternal movement led me to where I am now, personally and professionally. I am also passionate about emotional health and wellness. I owe this to my fluffy partner in crime, Jackson the Cockapoo.

After losing my little brother to a rare brain tumor while I worked for the Sorority I was devastated. But I decided to turn my devastation into determination and started my career in fundraising for cancer research to work for a future where no family has to endure this fate. I have raised over $1 million for cancer research and patient support programs in the past two years. In addition, investing in the future of cancer research and patient care ensures those in our underserved-communities have access to care which is an important part of our work as cancer disparities continue to grow.

I'm really passionate about mentoring others and supporting the mission thanks to the constant fluidity in trying new things, to tackle new mission-needs every single day! That’s the exciting part of being in the realm of engineering – there’s bandwidth to try out novel solutions and experiment to learn what works and doesn’t, quite rapidly. You get to unravel problems and crank out solutions all in the name of national security. Being able to empathize with the mission is key. I work with fascinating peers, cutting-edge technology and genuinely feel like I make a positive impact on national security, every day.

EMILY BICHL EPSILON PHI

ARTS/ENTREPRENEUR

FOUNDER, TO LIVE AND GIVE, TOLIVENGIVE.COM JUNIOR GRAPHIC DESIGNER, SMITHBUCKLIN

I am very passionate about making a difference in people's lives whether it is through philanthropy or art. I have loved being able to combine my two passions to launch a business whose mission is to make a difference in children's and their families' lives by creating t-shirt designs, selling them, and giving 30 percent of the profits to children's hospitals.

I am passionate about our criminal justice system and particularly the Midwest Innocence Project. Men and women sit wrongfully convicted in prison due to a flawed system. While the system may be flawed, that means there is much room for improvement and I know that I can make a difference in our current system if I continue to pursue my dreams no matter the cost. My dreams are tied to the dreams of others.

FOUNDER & CEO, JEN CONTRACTING GROUP LLC FOUNDER & CEO, FEMMEDECOR.COM FOUNDER & CEO, GIRL EXCELLENCE INC. 501(C)(3) NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION

My biggest accomplishment has definitely been co-founding The Breasties, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting young women affected by breast and ovarian cancer through community and friendship. I am passionate about helping others who are facing a cancer diagnosis at a young age. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 28 years old - I thought I was an anomaly. I felt so isolated, as if I was the only 20-something with this diagnosis. I soon learned how wrong I was. Since The Breasties started, I've been connected with so many incredible, strong young women who are in similar situations. I realized that I was never alone in my fight. These women empower me daily to do more and to give back to this community in any way that I can.

Empower advisors as they mentor collegiate women by making a gift to the Foundation

Having the opportunity to attend Advisor Institute these last two years has been invaluable. Speaking with advisors from chapters around the country really puts things into perspective and helps hammer home that we are not alone in our experiences. Each time, I come away with new skills, a new support group and a renewed enthusiasm and determination to continue striving to be the best advisor I can be. Advising has been one of the most challenging and most rewarding experiences I’ve had. I wouldn’t be able to succeed without the support of Alpha Sigma Alpha and the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation. Monica Morrison, Iota Alpha Chapter membership commitment advisor

The 2017 Advisor Institute was host to 108 new and tenured advisors. Throughout the weekend, advisors were equipped with the tools and training needed to be successful in their volunteer roles, as well as their personal lives. Advisors who attended shared that they gained a better understanding of today’s collegians, how

to work with different personality types during conflict and learned new ways to approach various situations. This year, the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation is excited to provide support for Advisor Institute again and impact the lives of many advisors, who in turn impact the lives of collegiate members.

Your gift supports programs such as Advisor Institute and impacts every collegiate chapter by providing education for their advisors. Make your donation online today at www.alphasigmaalpha.org/donate or by visiting MyASA.

Zeta Tau Chapter, Grand Valley State University Carianne Okopski, ZT, is the founder and current co-leader of I AM THAT GIRL on the campus of Grand Valley State University, MI. I AM THAT GIRL is an organization that helps women transform self-doubt into self-love. On the campus of GVSU this is done by providing a safe space to connect and have honest conversations about topics that matter to them such as finding their passion, knowing their purpose, self-confidence, relationships, fears, struggles, beauty, body image, mental health and more. Every day, women are bombarded with messages that attack what she is not and the mission of the organizations is to help each woman love who she is, to see beauty in herself and inspire that in others. “My goal in starting I AM THAT GIRL was to transcend stereotypes and to raise the standards for how girls in my community treat themselves, each other and the world. This community gives women something larger than themselves to stand for and creates a healthier, more powerful world.”

WOMAN OF

Poise and Purpose To develop women of poise and purpose is a mission that I am blessed to live every day. After twenty years of developing business plans and strategies for Fortune 500 food companies, I am now able to live the Alpha Sigma Alpha purpose every day by helping entrepreneurs and small business owners turn their passion into viable profitable businesses. I collaborate and coach business owners on the importance of a monetizable business strategy by helping them develop solid infrastructures, teams and marketing plans. I teach them the importance of self-confidence, personal development and branding as they navigate their place in the entrepreneurial world. Instilling the same core values ASA has instilled in us as sisters. My coaching and hospitality consulting has provided me the honor to speak on stages from 10 to 2500 and travel all over the world. I ignite a spark in my audiences that will lead them down a path of growth, giving them a balanced life and the results that they love. ASA emphasizes balance among the four aims of intellectual, physical, social and spiritual development. I am honored to carry these aims forward to my audiences and clients by accelerating their passions into business.
