Alpha Phi Quarterly Editorial Policy The purpose of the Alpha Phi Quarterly and its content is to provide information and services to the membership of the Alpha Phi Fraternity, in keeping with the Fraternity’s status as a 501(c)(7) tax-exempt private membership club. The magazine is devoted to highlighting its members and matters of fraternal and college interest. The views expressed in the articles published in the Quarterly are those of the authors and their contributors, and do not necessarily represent the opinions of Alpha Phi Fraternity, its officers or staff. All persons interested in submitting materials for publication in the Alpha Phi Quarterly are encouraged to send them to the editor at the Executive Office. The editor reserves the right to accept, deny or edit any materials submitted. Unless otherwise requested, all photos sent to the magazine will become the property of Alpha Phi International and will not be returned.

It is an honor to serve as International President for the 2014-16 biennium. I have been fortunate to know every Alpha Phi International President since I was initiated — 11 to be exact — and in April I was honored to spend time with eight of those women in Evanston, Ill. The time together was filled with Fraternity updates, lots of advice and of course, fun. Each woman forged a different path in Alpha Phi’s history, but they all have a common bond — a bond that was initiated by our Founders in 1872: a lifelong devotion to our sisterhood. Pearl Buck once said, “If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.” To understand our organization, we must honor our past, make sense of today and prepare for tomorrow. How were our Founders the same as today’s collegians? The following might sound familiar: Only 10 women were considered the original Founders. Some quit because of time or other obligations. One member left the original group because she couldn’t attend the weekly meetings. Another left because she wasn’t elected president. Clara worked part-time to pay dues. Grace resigned as the second president. Members endured three-hour-long meetings. They paid dues. They acquired a meeting space. They purchased insurance. In 1875 a cultivating committee was formed, and the women recruited three members. Founder Martha Foote Crow summed up these early years: “All was not happiness in those days. Do not think it … there were many charactertesting differences, quarrels, making up, many sorrows shared, much sifting of the spirit.” It is inspiring to realize the breadth of their knowledge for their time. Our greatest sense of gratitude for these women can be expressed by our ability to learn from them. As the number of our chapters grows and our membership thrives, we must continue to trust that the groundwork laid by our Founders will continue to support our Fraternity. There’s an old Greek proverb that says, “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” We may not be old men, but we are planting the trees of Alpha Phi’s future. We may never see the results of our leadership and hard work. Many of us will never sit in the shade of the trees we plant, but we are grateful that Martha, Rena, Clara, Kate, Florence, Ida, Jane, Elizabeth, Louise and Clara planted them for us. Our gift to future generations of Alpha Phis will be to do the same.

C ONVENTION 2014 AWARD REC I PI ENTS INDIVIDUAL AWARDS Ivy Vine

Ruth Himmelman Wright

Frances E. Willard

The prestigious Ivy Vine award recognizes distinguished, long-term service at high levels of responsibility for the overall welfare of the Fraternity and/or the interfraternal world.

The Ruth Himmelman Wright award honors a volunteer who has given enduring and selfless service to Alpha Phi.

The Frances E. Willard award honors Alpha Phi alumnae who have achieved outstanding success in their chosen fields and who have gained recognition on a national or international level.

Phyllis Sims Selig (Gamma Delta-Kansas) served Alpha Phi in many capacities during her 63 years of membership. At the collegiate level, she served as chapter president, and following graduation, she became active in her local alumnae chapter. In 1968, Phyllis was elected to Alpha Phi’s International Executive Board as director of finance, a position she held for six years. From 1974-78, she served as International President, during which time the Fraternity added 13 new chapters and initiated more than 9,200 new members. Phyllis was named to Alpha Phi Foundation's Board of Directors in 1976 and served on the Alpha Phi Board of Trustees from 1978-80. In 1979 she was elected to the board of directors of the FraternitySorority Hall of Fame for her leadership among all fraternal organizations. Phyllis’s attention to the Fraternity’s ceremonies was legendary. She memorized the ritual while president of her collegiate chapter, and in the decades following 1972’s centennial Convention, Phyllis conducted the ritual as a way to model its proper delivery to collegiate chapter presidents. Her final service to the Fraternity was as an exacting member of the Foundation’s heritage committee, where she assisted with the history of the Fraternity’s first 50 years, Alpha Phi International Fraternity: The First Fifty Years (1872-1922), Union Hand in Hand. Phyllis joined the Silent Chapter in February 2014. Her lifetime devotion was a shining example of constancy, loyalty and love.

Darcel Atwill Weller (Gamma Iota-Texas Tech) has given a lifetime of devoted service to Alpha Phi. As the founder and past president of the Kingwood, Texas, alumnae chapter, she also served as its alumnae Panhellenic delegate for more than 30 years. She was district alumnae chairman for south Texas for nearly two decades and served on the Fraternity’s nominating committee in the 1990s. She received the Polaris award in 2006. Darcel is a loyal alumna and a strong supporter of Texas Tech (Gamma Iota). As a legacy (her sister Denise preceded her at Texas Tech), she developed her volunteer work ethic from her mother, Betty Collins Atwill (Alpha Lambda-Alumna Initiate), who also supported Gamma Iota and the local alumnae chapter for many years, well after Darcel and Denise graduated. Among Darcel’s many contributions is the development of a comprehensive registry of all collegiate members who reside in Texas, which she began more than 25 years ago and continues today. She remains a driving force in Alpha Phi’s recommendation program in the South, and is instrumental in helping Alpha Phi’s new colonies identify and attract strong membership candidates. Darcel also served on the Foundation Board of Directors. In recognition of her lifetime dedication, a scholarship in her name is awarded annually by Alpha Phi Foundation. In many ways, Darcel exemplifies Ruth Himmelman Wright (Sigma-Washington), in whose memory this award is presented.

Cynthia Diller Fields (Gamma Nu-Miami University) began a career in retailing shortly after college, joining the training program at Federated Department Stores. She rose through the ranks to divisional merchandise manager before shifting her focus to direct marketing. In 1982 she pursued a position with Victoria’s Secret Catalog, then owned by The Limited. Her various roles honed her talents, and she was recognized in 1986 as president and CEO of the catalog, the second ever female CEO at The Limited, a role she held longer than any other CEO in company history. As CEO, Cindy transformed the business, delivering $1 billion in sales. At its peak, the direct marketing division mailed more than 400 million catalogs and created 36 unique issues annually. Cindy added clothing and swimwear to the company’s offerings and under her tenure, the now world-famous “Angels” and the acclaimed fashion show were created. The website was also launched, introducing the essential e-commerce channel to the business. When Cindy retired in 2000, she became involved with Pathfinder International, a non-profit organization providing family planning services to women in developing countries. Cindy has served in several capacities for the organization and is now in her fourth year as chair of the board. She embraces the importance of providing women with the education and tools to take control of their reproductive lives and to protect themselves from HIV infection. Kathleen S. Miller (Delta-Cornell) is among the highest ranking civilians in the military. Since 2010 she has served as assistant deputy chief of staff, G-4, where she oversees the sustainment aspects of Army logistics. The secretary of the Army appointed her to the Executive Resources Board, and during the course of her career, Kathy has received

In Mourning. In Solidarity. In the days and months after the tragic shootings outside the Alpha Phi chapter house at UC/Santa Barbara, our members have grown closer and safer. By Kristen Mitchell (Gamma-DePauw)

FALL 2014

On May 23, 2014, tragedy struck Isla Vista, Calif., when 22-year old Elliot Rodger shot and killed six people and wounded 13 others in a shooting rampage across the city and the UC/Santa Barbara campus. After killing three victims in his residence, he fled to Alpha Phi’s Gamma Beta chapter house in the 800 block of Embarcadero Del Norte. He proceeded to pound aggressively on the front door for several minutes. No one answered.

THE TRAGEDY It was Memorial Day Weekend — an unusually quiet time on campus — and more than 80 percent of UC/Santa Barbara (Gamma Beta) members who lived in the chapter house were out of town for the holiday. Only eight women and the house director were in the facility, including Vice President of Marketing Katelyn Reeves. Katelyn had just finished folding her laundry and was on the way back to her room when she heard banging on the front door. “There are almost always women downstairs, either studying in the library, making a snack or watching television in the living room,” Katelyn says. “One of them usually opens the door when someone rings the bell.” But the first floor was empty, except for Katelyn, and Elliot Rodger did not ring the bell. His pounding was unusual, and Katelyn’s instincts told her not to answer. Moments later, she was in her room changing when she heard 12 pops directly outside her window. “I thought they were fireworks of some sort, so I ducked my head, hoping they wouldn’t come through the open windows.” Vice President of Risk Management Vanessa Brist was also in the facility at the time. She didn’t notice the banging because the door to her room was shut. However,

she did hear a series of what she thought were firecracker bursts, followed by an ear-piercing scream. “My heart dropped when I realized it was gunfire,” Vanessa says. She and the house director acted quickly, closing and locking the open windows on the first floor and securing all members in a room farthest from the gunfire. Another member called 9-1-1 from upstairs. When Vanessa and the house director entered the library to secure the windows, they saw bodies on the lawn. “I didn’t realize how close the gun shots were,” Vanessa says. “It was a never-ending horror story.” The victims would later be identified as 22-year-old Katherine Cooper and 19-yearold Veronika Weiss—both students at UC/Santa Barbara and members of Delta Delta Delta. “We immediately started accounting for every member in the facility and put the chapter house on lockdown,” Katelyn says. As the story unfolded across Isla Vista, details about Elliot Rodger’s chilling 140page manifesto emerged. In the document, he outlined plans to enter the Alpha Phi facility and commit murder, then set the house on fire. He called it his “Day of Retribution,” in which he would seek revenge on the Alpha Phi women and other members of the Isla Vista community. That night, Elliot took the lives of seven

Beyond Security Fire safety Facility and housing safety go beyond security measures; fire safety and prevention is also important. Alpha Phi International mandates that all Alpha Phiowned facilities have fire sprinkler suppression systems and working fire extinguishers. Chapters in rented facilities should work with their landlords to provide fire suppression systems before renewing their leases. Members should practice safe exit from facilities with regular fire drills. To help prevent fires, Alpha Phi has banned the use of candles in all facilities. Use common sense and proper care when operating and storing any cooking equipment, electrical components, fireplace apparatus, etc., at each facility. Use of tobacco products is also banned within 25 feet of any property door or window. These restrictions are intended to protect members’ safety and well-being.

Personal safety As is good safety practice in any situation, members should walk with a buddy, especially when out at night. Stay in well-lit areas. If you suspect you’re being followed by a vehicle, cross the street and if needed, run the opposite direction. The vehicle will have to turn around in order to pursue you. Most campuses have Blue Light emergency telephones. Learn their locations and utilize them to notify campus police in the event of a threat. Don’t flash money, your wallet or expensive electronics — even cell phones — when walking around campus or to your vehicle. When parking at night, choose well-lit areas. Before exiting your vehicle, check for suspicious individuals loitering. Before entering your vehicle, check its interior, paying particular attention to the floor and rear seat. For more campus-specific safety resources visit your university’s public safety website or office.

people, including himself, and wounded 13 others. According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff ’s Office report, the complex case would eventually involve 12 crime scenes across 10 different locations, including the lawn of the Alpha Phi chapter facility. EMERGENCY PROCEDURE PLANS Immediately following the incident, the vice presidents in the facility contacted Chapter President Jenn Syvertsen, Collegiate Chapter Administrator Erica Kwiatkowski (Gamma Beta-UC/Santa Barbara), Chapter Advisor Ola Bateman (Beta Psi-San Jose State) and Alpha Phi Executive Office staff member Heather Scheuer (Delta EtaAdrian) to brief them on the shootings. Then they enacted the chapter’s emergency procedure plan. They sent out a message through Group Interactive Network (GIN) System, a webbased platform that allows administrators to send push notifications to its members’ cell phones, and utilized social media to touch base with all collegians. They posted

a status update on their official chapter Facebook page, asking sisters to “Like” if they were safe and to comment if they were with someone who did not have access to the page. Vanessa utilized an alphabetical chapter roster and worked with another member to check off sisters they knew were out of town. They then cross-referenced the list with members who “Liked” the Facebook status and called the remaining women who they had not heard from. Within 30 minutes of the shootings, the chapter had accounted for all 162 members, and they posted a second update to Facebook confirming everyone was safe. Two weeks prior, the local fire station had visited the chapter to discuss fire, earthquake and tsunami procedures. “We didn’t bring up a shooting because we thought the likelihood of one happening was smaller than a weatherrelated emergency,” says Vanessa. Since the incident, the chapter has updated its emergency procedure plan to include instructions specific to an active gunman on campus. They also worked to establish a safe meeting place outside of the

Alpha Phi chapter facility in the event of an emergency. “No one ever thinks something like this will happen until it does,” says Jenn. “This tragedy motivated our chapter to revamp our procedures and ensure they are thorough.” As vice president of risk management, Vanessa knew the plan well, but she emphasizes the importance of every member when it comes to enacting it. “It was scary to hear some of the women say they wouldn’t have known what to do if I hadn’t been there,” she says. “The entire chapter should be well-educated so that any member can execute the plan.” THE AFTERMATH In the days following the incident, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff ’s Office, university administrators, Alpha Phi volunteers and Gamma Beta’s house corporation board (HCB) coordinated with Executive Office staff members to ensure a physically and emotionally safe environment for the women. Twenty-four-hour manned security

was put in place at the facility, and women were encouraged to use the side door when leaving to avoid the media frenzy on the front lawn. Ola and other Alpha Phi volunteers also partnered with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life to make campus resources available for the chapter. Counselors were brought in Monday through Wednesday, and volunteers worked with the chapter leadership of Delta Delta Delta to bring the women of both organizations together to connect and heal. Gamma Beta volunteers took swift action to plan for returning members’ improved safety and personal well-being in the upcoming academic year. HCB President Gayla Jung Visalli (Gamma Beta-UC/Santa Barbara) established sub-committees to work on enhancements to the property, including changes to landscaping, lighting and security. Due in large part to chapter donations through Alpha Phi Foundation’s Hand to Hand Fund (see page 42), the HCB is in the process of installing security cameras and improving perimeter lighting, in addition to upgrading locks and gates surrounding the facility. ADVICE FOR ALL COLLEGIATE CHAPTERS In light of these events, Alpha Phi International’s Director of Collegiate Housing Tonya Sharp Ryan (PhiOklahoma) encourages all collegiate chapters to take a second look at the safety of their chapter facilities. “All of us, no matter our living situation, greatly contribute to our own safety by being aware of our surroundings and following good safety practices,” Tonya says. She emphasizes that members should avoid propping open doors. This leaves the facility vulnerable to potential intruders. When entering the building, members should ensure the door fully closes and the lock engages once inside. It’s also important that residents have a way to identify visitors before opening the door — a peephole, security camera monitor, window or sidelights — and practice smart safety procedures before opening the door to strangers. Security alarm systems, security camera systems and even

Within 30 minutes of the shootings, the chapter had accounted for all 162 members, and they posted a second update to Facebook confirming everyone was safe.

“Our pain was Tri Delta’s pain. Everyone was aware that we could have been walking to any one of our member’s memorials. The unity was almost tangible. In Mourning. In Solidarity. Since the incident, the chapter has updated its emergency procedure plan to include instructions specific to an active gunman on campus. They also worked to establish a safe meeting place outside of the Alpha Phi chapter facility in the event of an emergency.

Safety Steps Alpha Phi International recommends that each chapter’s house corporation board or chapter property committee, in cooperation with collegiate officers, ensure the following safety steps are taken in and around chapter facilities:

Door closure mechanisms, door locks and window locks all are fully functional. Shrubs are trimmed so that they don’t create a place for a potential intruder to hide near doorways. Pathways to doors and parking lots are well-lit. All members have access to the house — either using keys or a keyless entry system. All staff members and any vendor/service person who has regular or unsupervised access to the property should be subject to a full background check.

18

ALPHA PHI QUARTERLY

FALL 2014

security personnel can also enhance the safety of chapter facilities. “Security alarms should be convenient enough to operate so the chapter women will use them and not cause delay in members getting into or out of the facility,” Tonya says. “A coded ‘panic’ alarm may be more practical and useful than the typical door alarm used for private residences simply because of the sheer volume of members coming and going throughout any 24-hour period.” Security camera systems, combined with other good safety practices, are used successfully by Greek organizations, private businesses and home owners. A good security consultant — or even a property walk-through with a representative from the local police department — can offer many good security suggestions. “Above all, banding together to look out for one another is one of the best ways to keep our sisters safe,” Tonya says. “Take personal responsibility in doing your part. Observe your surroundings and report any concerns to your chapter officers or the house corporation board.” Ola agrees that safety should always be a top concern. “Work on your emergency procedures,” she says. “Establish relationships with your local police department and don’t be afraid to report suspicious behavior. Keep an open conversation about security and guest policies, and hold emergency drills at least twice a year as new members join the sisterhood. Make sure security is on your mind no matter the event or the day of the week.” HEALING On May 27, a memorial service was held at Harder Stadium in honor of the six students who died as a result of the tragedy. “The campus felt much different than normal. Some people were sad, others were mad or scared. But the entire UC/ Santa Barbara community attended,” says Katelyn. “The incident brought the Greek community closer. Before the service, we all gathered in front of the Tri Delta chapter house and walked together to the memorial.” Vanessa felt the same kinship that afternoon. “We walked over to the field in silence,” she says. “Our pain

was Tri Delta’s pain. Everyone was aware that we could have been walking to any one of our member’s memorials. The unity was almost tangible. At our most vulnerable moments, it’s amazing how we can give and take strength from each other in order to carry on.” In the weeks that followed, there was an outpouring of support for the entire UC/ Santa Barbara Greek community, and more particularly for Alpha Phi and Delta Delta Delta. Local alumnae offered their time and services, the university established a fund to honor the victims of the tragedy, and flowers, cards and other gestures of support poured in. The women received so much love from the community that they organized to give back for all they received. They made gift baskets for campus patrol, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, the fire department, counseling services, Delta Delta Delta, victims and more. “To see them healing, mobilizing and taking action,” says Ola. “It was a beautiful thing.” Katelyn agrees: “In such darkness, there was beauty in the love and support we received. Time will heal the pain, even if it’s slow.” To see a sample emergency procedure plan, visit alphaphi.org (keyword: emergency procedure). Alpha Phi International and UC/Santa Barbara (Gamma Beta) are thankful for the incredible response from donors through Alpha Phi Foundation’s Hand to Hand Fund. Thanks to a lead gift from the Susan Brink Sherratt Leadership Fund, the Hand to Hand Fund was established just one week after the incident. In the days and weeks that followed, members and chapters from all over North America — including UCLA (Beta Delta) and Loyola Marymount (Zeta Beta) — made donations that will fund counseling services, teambuilding activities, memorials and safety enhancements to the Gamma Beta chapter facility. The dollars raised totaled $25,000, and the check presentation was held at Convention. For more information on donating to the Hand to Hand Fund, please visit alphaphifoundation.org (keyword: hand to hand).

Watchcare Support Hotline

In August, Alpha Phi International Fraternity partnered with AllOne Health in Natick, Mass., to launch the Watchcare Support Hotline, a free and confidential telephonic student assessment, counseling and referral service. The hotline will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. In a recent study, the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University in New York found that over 30 percent of first-year students feel overwhelmed a great deal of the time, almost 10 percent of students have seriously considered committing suicide and five percent of students report feeling so depressed that it is difficult to function. In conjunction with these national statistics, Alpha Phi has seen an increase in members reporting and dealing with mental health and wellness issues. Sisters can utilize the Watchcare Support Hotline to address issues including, but not limited to, academics, finances, relationships, stress, depression and alcohol or substance abuse. "Not only did I build bonds with sisters across the world during ELI, I also built my confidence in leading others in my life. It was an incredible experience, and I am so thankful that Alpha Phi Foundation provided me with this opportunity. - AMANDA MCDERMOTT (ZETA IOTA-VIRGINIA), SESSION 1

“I learned how to appreciate Alpha Phi on a deeper level and really understand that I am part of something greater than myself. I also learned what I really believe in, as well as my own personal strengths and weaknesses as a leader.”

CONTENT REVIEW Each small group reviewed a day of content with the entire group. They used skits, songs and games to take the day’s learning and make it memorable.

- SERISSA JONES (IOTA OMICRON-WPI), SESSION 2

The Fraternity would wholeheartedly like to thank Alpha Phi Foundation for its generous and continued support of the Emerging Leaders Institute. Through this partnership we have been able to empower hundreds of women through the art of leadership and stewardship.

What’s Next? The newest component of Alpha Phi’s Leadership Initiative, the Alpha Phi Leadership Fellows Program, launched with its inaugural session August 6-10, 2014. Look for more about this program, complete with pictures, in the Winter 2015 Quarterly. Visit alphaphi.org (keyword: leadership fellows) for more information.

Foundation

CELEBRATED A T C O N V E N T I O N 2 014 Hand to Hand Fund

Tenth Anniversary of Susan Brink Sherratt Leadership Fund

Earlier this year, tragedy struck the campus of UC/Santa Barbara in Isla Vista, Calif. Not only did this affect the community as a whole, it directly impacted our Gamma Beta chapter (see page 14). While there were no buildings to re-construct or teams of exhausted rescue workers to feed, there were deep wounds to be healed, safety to be restored and memorials to be created. Thanks to a lead gift from the Susan Brink Sherratt Leadership Fund, the Hand to Hand Fund was established just one week after the incident to help chapters heal and move forward after a natural or man-made catastrophe. Alpha Phis from across North America made donations in the days that followed to provide counseling programs, teambuilding activities, memorials and safety enhancements to the chapter facility. In addition to these individual gifts, both UCLA (Beta Delta) and Loyola Marymount (Zeta Beta) contributed to the Hand to Hand Fund in support of Gamma Beta. The Foundation proudly presented the first Hand to Hand Fund grant in the amount of $25,000 to the chapter at Convention.

The Susan Brink Sherratt Leadership Fund was established 10 years ago by Renee Smith Zimmerman Zainer (Beta EpsilonArizona) in recognition of Susan Brink Sherratt’s (Beta Beta-Michigan State) leadership and service to Alpha Phi Foundation. This fund provides an annual grant to an established collegiate chapter for leadership training, teambuilding activities and sisterhood events to help further the well-being of the chapter. Susan and Renee joined Alpha Phi Foundation in presenting the 2014 recipient, James Madison (Theta Iota), with a check at Convention. The chapter will use this grant to expand and enhance their new member education program, incorporate alumnae and motivational speakers into events and programming as a way to engage all chapter members and address the logistical demands of a growing chapter. Congratulations to James Madison, and best wishes for much success!

Red Dress Program Celebrates 10 Years

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Alpha Phi Foundation’s Red Dress program. In 2004, the Foundation introduced the program with the intent that one day every chapter would host a Red Dress event. Ten years later, every chapter is raising money through a Red Dress event! These events range from 5Ks to talent competitions to brunches and evening galas and welcome thousands of guests each academic year. The Foundation was honored to celebrate the growth of this program as a part of the State of the Foundation during Convention. Since the inception of the program — just 10 years ago — collegiate chapters have raised more than $10.7 million through Red Dress events! Congratulations, and thank you, to all collegiate chapters for your hard work, amazing dedication and inspiring philanthropic spirit. Together, we are living our mission of advancing women’s lives through the power of philanthropy.

Nancy Owen Craig Outstanding Philanthropist Award Convention marked the retirement of Nancy Owen Craig (Beta Chi-Bucknell) from her 34-year career as a professional fundraiser. Nancy’s contributions to both the fundraising field and the Greek foundations community have been numerous, but it is her long-standing and outstanding work at Alpha Phi Foundation that we treasure most. Nancy served as Foundation executive director from July 1995 to May 2002. Five years later, she returned to the staff in her latest role as director of philanthropic campaigns to serve as the lead fundraiser for the Foundation’s Campaign for Leadership. Her expertise, donor-centered approach and deep appreciation for the power of philanthropy were instrumental in its success. Alpha Phi Foundation was honored to recognize Nancy’s influence in Alpha Phi over the years as a member, volunteer, Foundation executive director and lead development officer of the largest campaign in our history and that of the National Panhellenic Conference with the establishment of the Nancy Owen Craig Outstanding Philanthropist Award. This award recognizes an Alpha Phi member, couple or family whose exceptional generosity has had a profound impact on Alpha Phi International Fraternity, inspired others to give with purpose and exemplifies the true spirit of philanthropy. This award will be presented at Convention each biennium with the recipient being selected by the Foundation Board of Directors. The inaugural award was presented to Nancy at Convention. Forget Me Not Field “Forget me not dear friend, for I will always remember thee.” Alpha Phi Foundation’s Forget Me Not Field bloomed once again at Convention. Sisters commemorated their Alpha Phi memories with $10 forget-me-nots in honor, celebration and memory of their Alpha Phi sisters. All honorees received an acknowledgement letter letting them know that a donation was made in their honor. The names of all honorees were also displayed in our Field of Dreams on forgetmenotfield.org. This year, more than ever before, Alpha Phis stood together to support sisters in need — raising more than $41,000 for the Forget Me Not Fund. Gifts to this fund provide assistance grants to alumnae who are facing severe financial distress, serious health issues, the consequences of natural disasters and urgent family crisis and to collegians who face an interruption of education due to unforeseen personal

or financial struggles. With these donations to the Forget Me Not Fund, 17 sisters in need will receive a Forget Me Not Grant, and the greatest gift of all: the knowledge that their sisters care and are always there to help. These grants are made possible in large part through the generosity of Marilyn Collins Denno (Gamma Beta-UC/Santa Barbara). Marilyn joined Foundation Chair Diane Spry Straker (Delta Alpha-East Carolina) for lunch and afternoon sessions one day during Convention (pictured above). In the time the two spent together, they reflected on their own Alpha Phi experiences, and Marilyn presented Diane with a $25,000 gift to the Forget Me Not Fund. Marilyn’s gift honors her commitment to always remember our sisters, remember Alpha Phi.

Move Your Phi’t

“Make it Alpha Phi!” was the theme of the evening as Alpha Phis gathered for the Foundation’s Red Dress dinner at Convention. The room was brought to life by emcees Mary Beth Cooleen Tully (Epsilon Psi-Lehigh) and Colin Tetreault throughout the Foundation’s Project Red Dress competition. The top five finalists watched their designs come to life on the runway while competing for bragging rights, the Project Red Dress title and the opportunity to raise funds for the Foundation’s vital programs. Debuting their designs on stage were Erin Bleakley (Iota Xi-Denver), supporting women’s heart health; Lilai Guo (Iota Kappa-Dartmouth), supporting scholarship; Danielle Miller (Delta EpsilonIowa), supporting the Forget Me Not Fund; Alex Kelly (Omega-Texas), supporting leadership and Jordi Tiffany (Pi-North Dakota), supporting heritage. The show included a guest appearance and exclusive designs by New York Designer Marisol Deluna (Alpha LambdaAlumna Initiate), who is celebrating 25 years in the fashion industry. Convention attendees and Foundation donors volunteered as models for the evening, strutting their stuff on the runway and building excitement for their respective programs. New this year, the entire evening was live-posted through the Foundation’s social media outlets, allowing individuals to vote with their dollars in real-time from the comfort of their homes. An overwhelming 280 donors voted, and Jordi Tiffany was named the winner with her vintageinspired dress (pictured at right). Together, these talented designers and models raised more than $34,000 to support Foundation programs.

Alpha Phi Foundation welcomed more than 175 determined Alpha Phis for our 6:00 a.m. 5K run/walk to raise funds in support of women’s heart health and our overall mission. Jenny Holsman Tetreault (Gamma Pi-Arizona State) motivated the crowd as she led participants through a series of warm-up exercises before the race began. Generously donated Pop Chips and Luna Bars gave everyone an early morning pick-me-up after crossing the finish line. The Foundation Board of Directors greeted participants at the finish line, presenting each one with a medal to celebrate their completion of the course. Additional medals were also presented to the top three alumnae and collegiate finishers. Prior to and following Convention, participants had the opportunity to raise funds for Alpha Phi Foundation via Crowdrise, an online fundraising tool that focuses on peer-to-peer fundraising. Participants raised more than $23,000! Congratulations, and thank you, to everyone who joined the Foundation for this early morning run, inspiring Alpha Phis everywhere to get up and move their phi’t!

Keynote Speaker: Angela Guillory Angela Guillory, associate dean and director of Greek life at Louisiana State University, served as the keynote speaker for Convention 2014. Angela previously served as the assistant dean for student activities at Tulane University and worked at the University of Arkansas in career services. As a member of Sigma Kappa sorority, she served as national president, national vice president for programming, National Panhellenic Conference delegate and national vice president for membership. Her speech focused on empowering Greek women to be the leaders of tomorrow and shared personal stories from her own experiences. She emphasized the importance of continuing to grow as a leader and to learn from the challenges you face. Angela’s keynote address was funded through the generosity of Alpha Phi Foundation and the Susan Weiskittle Barrick Endowment for Leadership Enrichment.

Sharon Petzold Memorial Scholarship Endowed Alpha Phi Foundation is proud to announce the Sharon Petzold Memorial Scholarship has reached endowment and will be awarded for the first time for the 2015-16 academic year. Sharon Blevins Petzold (Gamma BetaUC/Santa Barbara) pledged Alpha Phi in the spring of 1975. Her commitment and connection to this sisterhood lasted throughout her lifetime. “She loved Alpha Phi and would regularly get together with her sisters two to three times a year,” shares her husband Guy Petzold. “To Sharon, it was a lifelong connection.” This scholarship was started in Sharon’s memory by her family and one of her former students, Erica Kwiatkowski (Gamma Beta-UC/Santa Barbara). “Growing up, Sharon was one of my favorite teachers whose lessons, passion and creativity continue to resonate with me in my academic and professional life.” Sharon loved education and lived her life in the pursuit of helping others reach their highest potential. After 20 years of teaching, Sharon retired in 2011. Tragically, she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer shortly thereafter and passed away in 2012. Through this scholarship, Sharon’s memory will continue to inspire undergraduate members of the Gamma Beta chapter to live life in her enthusiastic way. Alpha Phi Foundation would like to thank all the donors who made this scholarship possible: Sharon’s family, chapter sisters and close friends. With their support, we are empowering Alpha Phi women to fulfill their commitment to academic excellence.
