Dear Sisters, This June more than 550 Alpha Phis gathered in Scottsdale, Ariz., for our 67th Biennial Convention, and what an incredible event it was! Inside this issue of the Quarterly you will get a glimpse of the many wonderful moments that made Convention 2008 so very memorable. Laura Malley-Schmitt Highlights included the launch of Alpha Phi’s new marketing identity (see page 3), several dynamic guest speakers and the debut of our new International Recruitment and Retention Team. However, the Foundation’s dinner on Friday provided the most inspirational moment we have had at Convention in many years. That evening the Foundation announced the endowment campaign for leadership development and celebrated the key volunteers who had made major gifts in the silent phase of the campaign. The event featured a wonderful dinner, great dance music and a shoe fashion show. Much to the surprise of everyone in the room, the inimitable Kary Crumm Huffman (Beta Psi-San Jose State) took to the stage and shared her own spur-of-the-moment decision to make a stretch gift to the campaign. This set off a chain reaction of generous pledges from dedicated alumnae in the audience, and then pledges from more than 130 collegiate leaders who stormed the stage together in an extraordinary display of solidarity and commitment to Alpha Phi! Thank you to everyone, especially our collegiate members, who stepped forward that evening. Moments like this are a reminder of the awesome power of our support for one another and Alpha Phi’s passion for leadership excellence. Together, we can achieve anything! Heart to heart,

Laura Malley-Schmitt (Zeta Phi-MIT) International President

The following is excerpted from the State of the Fraternity Address presented by International President Laura Malley-Schmitt (Zeta Phi-MIT) and Executive Director Susan Zabriskie (Theta-Michigan) during Convention 2008.

Laura Malley-Schmitt, International President Both the International Executive Board and our staff work together to ensure Alpha Phi is moving forward in the right direction and in concert with the Alpha Phi Foundation. We use the Strategic Plan to guide us, and so it makes sense for us to use the Plan as the basis of our report to you. Laura Malley-Schmitt

Strategic Plan priorities Our current Strategic Plan has six priorities: growth, marketing and branding, infrastructure and finances, lifetime experience, value-added organization and sisterhood. Growth We have had an incredible biennium in collegiate growth. We have 147 collegiate chapters and two colonies on our roster. This year Alpha Phi initiated 4,616 new members, breaking an Alpha Phi record! Alpha Phi is making incredible progress not only in terms of the size of our new member class, but also in the appeal of Alpha Phi to potential new members. We have so many chapters who are reaching new heights in recruitment, and we beam with pride whenever we see this improvement. We look forward to continued innovation and achievement through our International Recruitment and Retention Team (IRT). Extension Collegiate extension hasn’t been this much fun since the 1980s. Campuses everywhere are opening their doors to new chapters, and Alpha Phi is responding with great success! Oklahoma (Phi) is an amazing success story. Today, the chapter has affiliated over 295 women in just two years. We celebrate the return of Zeta Sigma chapter at Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster, Penn. We installed our new chapter at the prestigious Dartmouth College (Iota Kappa). We added a brand new state to our roster with the installation of Iota Lambda at the University of Connecticut. Alpha Phi revitalized three chapters: UNC/Wilmington (Eta Xi), Dayton (Zeta Psi) and DePaul (Iota Eta). We are very proud of their success. Alpha Phi was chosen to colonize at the University of Alabama. We are very excited to report that Beta Mu chapter will return to Alabama after being absent for 50 years. Alpha Phi was also chosen to colonize at Georgia Tech. We are so proud and excited to welcome the women of the Chi Omega Tau local sorority.

PA G E T W O

For the 2008-10 biennium, our priority will be the colonies and new chapters that we have right now. We look forward to a strategic approach to extension. We will only pursue new prospects that represent a truly unique opportunity to strengthen Alpha Phi. Lifetime experience The Alumnae Membership Strategy Committee (AMSC) completed wonderful projects, including a tool kit for planning chapter anniversary celebrations, a demographic study of the needs of our young alumnae and plans for an exciting chapter history project. A highlight this biennium has been our incredible partnership with the Alpha Phi Foundation! The International Executive Board and Foundation Board met in Evanston twice this biennium. We enjoy a great friendship with the entire Foundation Board and staff, and share a strong commitment to work together. We are two organizations, but we are one Alpha Phi. A big development from our collaboration with the Foundation was the creation of the Alumnae Strategy Team. We know through Alpha Phi ingenuity we can create a groundbreaking approach to alumnae engagement that draws upon our collective expertise in building community. Yet another important accomplishment this biennium was the creation of the Volunteer Experience Development Plan. Alpha Phi depends on more than 1,200 volunteers across North America to assist in the successful operation of our Fraternity. The board closely studied the area of volunteers, listening carefully to your feedback. Alpha Phi is poised to accomplish great things in the areas of alumnae and volunteer satisfaction. Our goal is for Alpha Phi to remain the organization of first choice in the hearts of our alumnae and volunteers!

“Our goal is to maintain and solidify Alpha Phi as the sisterhood of first choice, yesterday, today and tomorrow.”

Sisterhood It may seem unusual to list “sisterhood” as a priority in a business plan. However, sisterhood is what Alpha Phi is all about! First and foremost, sisterhood flourishes in strong and healthy chapters. Strong recruitment, programming and operations are essential. So, we continue to emphasize chapter health throughout. Also in the area of sisterhood, we celebrate our ceremonies and ritual, the common bond we all share. Several of our ceremonies,

ALPHA PHI

as well as our education in ritual, were improved upon. Important to sisterhood is an appreciation of our heritage. The effort to begin preserving chapter histories is part of a larger project to prepare for the publication of our 150 year history in 2022. Looking ahead, new programming initiatives are in the works.

We will build stronger relationships with parents and Greek advisors; promoting goodwill towards Alpha Phi will also strengthen sisterhood. We must never lose sight of this fundamental part of Alpha Phi. Simply said, our goal is to maintain and solidify Alpha Phi as the sisterhood of first choice, yesterday, today and tomorrow.

The 2008 U.S. federal, state and local elections are just around the corner. The goal of this article is not to tell you about the candidates, nor for whom to vote; we simply hope to remind you that as women, we have the right to make our voices heard – a right our Founders did not have when they were in college or for most of their lives. Since deadlines to register to vote begin as early as Oct. 4, Alpha Phi has been encouraging sisters to register since June, at Convention and on our Web site. For specific registration deadlines in your state, to learn how to register and vote, to research candidates and find other voting resources, visit www.alphaphi.org. Next step: vote! If you are a U.S. citizen and 18 years of age or older, it is your right to vote. (See page 7.)

It hasn’t always been this When our Founders established Alpha Phi in 1872, the world was much different. Men dominated America's culture and power structure. Society viewed women only as daughters, wives and mothers.

1776

Declaration of Independence signed. Right to vote restricted to property owners – most of whom are white male Protestants over the age of 21.

1787

U.S. Constitution signed. Right to vote decision was up to the states, which restricted voting to white males based on religious, property and taxpaying qualifications.

Women were beginning to have more educational opportunities than ever before. However, the majority of colleges and universities were for men only (59 percent), and coeducation was a new endeavor that often met with resistance. In 1870, only 0.7 percent of the female population went to college. When our 10 Founders attended Syracuse University, they represented half of the school’s female student population. The 1870 U.S. Census reported that females made up 15 percent of the total U.S. workforce, but the majority worked in occupations considered more “gentle” such as teaching, dressmaking, millinery and tailoring. Women were not allowed equal opportunities in education or the workplace. If married, they could not divorce an abusive husband or gain custody of their children. Women were not allowed to vote or hold public office. Women were struggling to secure these basic rights during this time, and their fight often met much resistance.

1870

1920

Women gain the right to vote. The 19th Amendment declares that the right to vote cannot be denied “on account of sex.”

Following the Civil War and the end of slavery, the 15th Amendment states the right to vote cannot be denied “on account of race, color or previous condition of servitude”; although African American men won the right to vote, some states implemented property requirements, poll taxes or literacy tests that prevented them from doing so. This persisted into the 1960s. ALPHA PHI

Historical perspective of women’s right to The U.S. women’s suffrage movement, or the right of women to vote, evolved from the first organized women’s rights convention, held in 1848 in Seneca Falls, N.Y. More than 300 women and men discussed the subjugation of women in the U.S. and the rights they were entitled to as American citizens. The 68 female and 32 male delegates signed a Declaration of Sentiments, patterned after the U.S. Declaration of Independence, that stated “all men and women are created equal.” More conventions followed, organized by the prominent women leaders of the time. The National Woman Suffrage Association and American Woman Suffrage Association were formed in 1869, merging in 1890 to become the National American Woman Suffrage Association. It was the most well-known pro-suffrage organization of the time. Its members lobbied for women’s right to vote on a state-by-state basis in an effort to influence the federal government. In 1869, Wyoming became the first state to allow women to vote

1924

The Indian Citizenship Act grants Native Americans U.S. citizenship, and thus the right to vote. However, the right to vote is still governed by state law, and Native Americans are not allowed to vote in Arizona and New Mexico until 1948.

in state and local elections. By 1912, nine states had granted women voting rights in state and local elections. Suffragists used visible tactics to make their voices heard, including writing newspaper editorials and creating their own publications, participating in suffrage parades, signing petitions and demonstrating. Susan B. Anthony, a prominent civil rights, women’s rights and women’s suffrage leader of the time who encouraged women to register and vote in 1872, was arrested with other women who attempted to vote in that year’s presidential election. The “Anthony Amendment,” which would allow women to vote in federal elections, was introduced to U.S. Congress in 1878, and the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate voted on the amendment in 1887, 1918 and 1919 to no avail. The women’s suffrage movement received national attention by the 1900s as suffragists employed more high-profile and radical measures: storming state legislatures, protests, arrests and hunger strikes.

The Voting Rights Act bans literacy tests as a voting requirement and bars all racist voting practices in all states.

The 24th Amendment declares that the states cannot require citizens to pay a poll tax in order to vote in federal elections.

1971

1975

Additions to the Voting Rights Act require translations of all election materials to be made available for non-English speaking citizens.

In response to the Vietnam War and the outcry, “Old enough to fight, old enough to vote,” the 26th Amendment lowers the voting age from 21 to 18.

The “Anthony Amendment” was finally signed into law in 1920. After a 70-year struggle, women were granted the right to vote in local, state and federal elections with the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

We’ve come a long Fast forward 84 years. In the 2004 U.S. presidential election, 74 percent of women and 71 percent of men were registered to vote. Of those registered, more women than men voted (65 percent versus 62 Frances E. Willard, Prominent Women’s Suffrage Leader Among the leaders of the women’s suffrage movement was Frances E. Willard (Alpha Lambda-Alumna Initiate), an author, public speaker, educator and reformer. She was called one of the most prominent women of her time. Her work was instrmental in the passage of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution. In her own words, she worked for “a world Frances E. Willard

with no sectarianism in religion and no sex in citizenship.” Whatever touches humanity, she said, “touches us.” Frances Willard was chosen by our Founders as Alpha Phi’s first alumna initiate in 1875 after seeing her speak at a meeting of prestigious women of the time (see sidebar). She served Alpha Phi by helping begin the Northwestern (Beta) chapter and served as the Fraternity’s national president (1887). She was a brilliant student and distinguished teacher in the Northwestern Female College (Evanston, Ill.); after it became the Evanston College for Ladies, she was made its president – the first female president of a woman’s college. When the college merged with Northwestern University, she was the first dean of women. She rallied support for several other significant reform movements including

percent). However, less women than men aged 18-24 voted (44 percent versus 50 percent). Today, female enrollment in higher education outnumbers that of men, with women making up 58 percent of undergraduates, according to U.S. Education Department 2007 statistics. Today, women make up 46 percent of the U.S. workforce (U.S. Labor Department 2007 figures) and career opportunities extend well beyond the traditional roles of women to include work in the service sector, blue- and white-collar positions, government and military. Women share in America’s culture and power structure. Women lead Fortune 500 companies, own businesses and run local, state and national governments. A woman is speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, the third most powerful position following the president and vice president of the United States. For the first time in a U.S. presidential election, a woman was a serious candidate for the Democratic nomination for president.

change

Voting causes We’ve come a long way, but the struggle for women’s rights did not end in 1920. As little as 50 years ago, the societal image of women had barely changed. Her role was in the home as wife and mother. Working before getting married was accepted, as long as it was in a “woman’s” profession. Unmarried women were considered “old maids.” Men continued to dominate America’s culture and power structure. Only “feminists” discussed the need to overcome sex discrimination and push for more women’s rights. Conditions have progressively improved since the 1950s thanks to those who fought for the passage of women’s rights legislation, but there is still work to be done. Women still fight for equality in professional and political life and health coverage to name a few, and women fight against various other forms of discrimination. By educating ourselves, becoming involved in issues of importance to us and exercising our right to vote, we can effect change for ourselves and for future generations.

Convention 2008: Our Shared Path More than 550 Alpha Phis and guests attended the Fraternity’s 67th Biennial Convention June 25-29 in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess was the backdrop for sisters from across the U.S. and Canada to conduct business, build leadership skills, renew friendships and celebrate the success of Alpha Phi. Led by Director of Training, Development and Communications Denise Jung Reens (Epsilon Delta-Northern Illinois), the four-day event featured awards ceremonies (see page 10), a special Foundation dinner celebration, Red Dress gala, initiation and dynamic speakers and educational sessions. Highlights Educational sessions provided chapter advisers and collegiate and alumnae delegates with practical knowledge that will be utilized by their chapters. Chapter Adviser Academy and Alumnae Chapter College tracks were held separately and offered intensive training to more than 100 participants (see sidebar). Convention attendees learned about the launch of Alpha Phi International’s new marketing identity, the organization’s progress towards its Strategic Plan and plans for the future (see State of the Fraternity, page 2). The Alpha Phi Foundation launched a “10 million by 2010” endowment campaign for leadership during its “Stepping Up” dinner on Friday, and alumnae and collegians “stepped up” to support the effort (see page 22). The Foundation also promoted heart health by hosting a late night yoga session on Thursday, led by certified yoga instructor Jennifer Holsman (Gamma Pi-Arizona State). Girls Fight Back Founder Erin Weed Underwood (Zeta AlphaEastern Illinois) donated copies of the second edition of her book Girls Fight Back! The College Girl’s Guide to Protecting Herself (Boulder Press, 2007. ISBN: 0977438201) to Convention attendees. SELF Magazine, partner of Alpha Phi on such projects as the Alpha Phi SELF Challenge and the Go Green Challenge, sponsored by SELF and Paul Mitchell, sponsored a frozen fruit bar break and provided free magazines and SELF T-shirts to attendees. Past International President Phyllis Sims Selig (Gamma DeltaKansas) led the Service of Remembrance and the initiation ceremony (see photo sidebar). Music Consultant Judy Kay Schmidt Mead (Delta GammaNorthern Colorado) and a volunteer chorus lifted their voices in song throughout Convention. The Red Dress Gala was an inspiring conclusion to a memorable Convention. Special Training Tracks Offered During Convention 2008 ALUMNAE CHAPTER COLLEGE In July 2003, Alpha Phi International created a concept called Alumnae Chapter Health Indicators (ACHI) to assist alumnae chapters in improving their health and strength. Since then, Alumnae Chapter College has been held annually to teach members how to implement ACHI into an alumnae chapter. Alumnae Chapter Recognition Awards Created in 2003, Alumnae Chapter Health Indicators (ACHI) assist alumnae chapters in realizing their current strengths and areas for advancement. Prior to the ACHI, many chapters lacked specific focus as to how to develop their chapters further. The ACHI now gives alumnae chapters a road map towards self improvement. There are 50 indicators, divided into five categories, which give direction to chapters looking to enhance and expand their existing

Alpha Phi is not something we were.

The lifelong bond of sisterhood we share can’t be separated by years, time or distance. No matter where life has taken you, you are a part of the sisterhood of Alpha Phi. Each year, Alpha Phi depends on you to carry on the tradition of sisterhood by paying your International alumnae dues. This money directly supports the Fraternity’s programs and initiatives and allows Alpha Phi to deliver the support systems and services our members want. Some of these services include developing the Fraternity’s Web site to allow greater alumnae connectivity, improving services for local alumnae chapters’ leadership and partial funding for educational leadership consultants to visit collegiate chapters. This is just a small sampling of how your dues help Alpha Phi! Now is your opportunity to renew your bond as a woman, member and sister of Alpha Phi.

On April 15, 2008, more than 70 representatives from the 26 National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) member groups visited Capitol Hill and urged members of Congress to support the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA) (H.R. 643/S.638). This was the seventh year that members of NPC have joined representatives from the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and Association of Fraternity Advisors (AFA) to promote the passage of CHIA. For the fifth year, student representatives joined the visit teams. Forty women from various colleges and universities visited Washington, D.C., for three days of training and education on all aspects of Congress and CHIA. With a record number of 418 visits to the Hill in one day, members of fraternities and sororities continued to make their presence known and to work towards the passage of CHIA as well as The College Fire Prevention Act (H.R. 642). Since the visits in April, CHIA has gained 15 new sponsors that bring the total sponsor count to 200 in the House and 38 in the Senate. The goal of 218 House sponsors and 40 Senate sponsors is fast approaching. Additional follow up contacts are needed by everyone who visited the Hill in April. The more we push and ask, the more likely a new sponsor will sign on. Recognition and thanks go to the NIC staff who coordinates registration for the Hill visits, Kevin O'Neill and members of the Fraternal Caucus who plan and execute the student training as well as the visit schedule, and to the NPC member groups who once again sent representatives to D.C. and made the passage of this legislation a priority for their organizations and the entire fraternity and sorority community.

I E B

The following is excerpted from 2006-08 International Executive Board Director Bonnie K. Arthur’s (Delta Delta-Oklahoma City) speech presented at the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner during Convention 2008.

I am here on behalf of the International Executive Board to say a big “thank you” to the hundreds of volunteers who give of themselves selflessly and tirelessly so Alpha Phi can continue to be the incredible organization it is. But first, how do you know if you are an Alpha Phi volunteer? If you’ve ever had a call at midnight from a stressed out collegiate member … you might be an Alpha Phi volunteer. If you’ve ever skipped work to meet with a Greek advisor … you might be an Alpha Phi volunteer. If you have given up a beautiful fall weekend to sleep in the basement of the Executive Office … you might be an Alpha Phi volunteer. If you wouldn’t hesitate to fix the plumbing at a chapter house, but immediately call for professional help in your own home … you might be an Alpha Phi volunteer. And if your idea of a fun summer vacation is going to the hot Arizona desert … you might be an Alpha Phi volunteer. Alpha Phi not only depends on volunteers, but we are our volunteers. Volunteers are our most active alumnae, creating the sisterhood and lifetime commitment that makes Alpha Phi so strong. Betty Mullins Jones (Gamma-DePauw), a much-loved former International President and National Panhellenic Conference delegate, in her final NPC report to the Fraternity, stated: “We sometimes forget to take into consideration what it has cost our members in terms of time and energy to advise a chapter, to sit on a house corporation board, to serve on a committee. We have been trained in the business world to look at the bottom line, forgetting sometimes that the bottom line ignores the human spirit, the human touch and the human heart, which is so fragile and so easily broken.” She summed it up so well; we are in the people business. There are so many demands on our time: work, school, family, friends, other volunteer activities, and usually at the bottom of that list – our own health and well-being. With all of these demands, it is a truly extraordinary woman who spends her weekend with a group of collegiate members preparing for recruitment, gives up family time to participate in a conference call, or – my favorite – the chapter adviser who dealt with issues in her chapter over the phone while on a boat cruise on the Danube, half way across the world.

FALL 2008

With all of these demands, why volunteer for Alpha Phi? Why do you volunteer? Earlier in the biennium, we surveyed volunteers and asked them why they volunteer. I’d like to share some of the responses. • One woman wrote: “My career is Alpha Phi. I work fulltime, but that is just my job – that’s just what I do for a paycheck. I am passionate about Alpha Phi.” • A chapter adviser said she volunteers because “working with a group of motivated, inspiring women, both at the alumnae and collegiate level, challenges me to become a better person.” • Another woman told us she volunteers because she enjoys “working with absolutely fantastic sisters, many of whom became my best friends for life.” • I found it interesting that several women reported they learned skills volunteering for Alpha Phi that helped them in their professional life. One reported that using skills gained working on an International committee helped her get a promotion at her day job! • A longtime Alpha Phi volunteer wrote she enjoys “working with the collegians and seeing things they can accomplish, helping them have a positive Alpha Phi experience as I once did.” But as a volunteer myself, I must say the reason I volunteer is purely selfish. It not only feels good when you feel like you are helping others, but as many have said before me, Alpha Phi always gives back much more than you give. The best thing about volunteering for me is the friendships formed with other volunteers and collegiate members. Our creed talks about believing in friendships formed in the springtime of our youth. But it’s the friendships formed in the summer and fall of my quickly waning youth that have really inspired me. The diverse personalities and amazing character of the women who volunteer for Alpha Phi are unparalleled. No other job, volunteer activity, or social circle can provide you with this kind of friendship and support. There are so many sacrifices our volunteers make, and we want to say “thank you.” Whatever the reason you do it, we thank you for the support you give our chapters. Thank you for the difference you have made in so many women’s lives. Volunteering for Alpha Phi is the epitome of lifetime commitment. And we thank you for all that you do!

Foundation Donors “Step Up” Alpha Phi Foundation announces campaign to raise $10 million by 2010

Runway models? No, collegiate donors, putting their best foot forward to support the Foundation campaign for leadership during the Convention celebration.

The air crackled with excitement. Guests strutted down a red carpet to DJ music. Paparazzi shouted from behind velvet ropes. Flashbulbs popped all around. Models paraded down a 50-foot runway, wearing T-shirts proclaiming “I ♥ Donors,” “I ♥ Philanthropy,” “I ♥ ΑΦ.” and showing the latest shoe styles courtesy of DSW®. At every seat, attendees found a shoe-shaped swag bag – donated by Lisa Fiesselmann Gleeson (Beta Beta-Michigan State) – filled with certificates provided by DSW® and shoes.com®. “We’re putting our best foot forward to transform our organization,” said Emily Ellison Lamb (Gamma Iota-Texas Tech), Foundation executive director, as the Foundation Convention celebration began. “And to show how we’re ‘stepping up,’” said outgoing Foundation Board Secretary Ann Brinkman (Zeta Delta-Iowa State), emcee for the evening, “we’re proud to announce that the Foundation is beginning a campaign to raise $10 million by 2010, primarily for leadership programming for Alpha Phis.” Ann revealed that, in the first year (the “quiet phase”) of fundraising – spearheaded by Alpha Phi Foundation and International Executive Board directors, plus past Board members and staff – more than $4,000,000 was raised toward the goal. She then paid tribute to two major donors: Alpha Phi Fraternity and Diane Spry Straker (Delta Alpha-East Carolina) (see page 23). “Diane’s gift is the largest single gift ever made by a living Alpha Phi!” said Ann, as attendees cheered. Before the evening ended, unplanned excitement occurred. Kary Crumm Huffman (Beta Psi-San Jose State) took the microphone and thanked Diane. “I can’t afford to match her PA G E T W E N T Y- T W O

fabulous gift,” Kary said, “but I can afford $500! Are there any other young sisters who will join me?” Alpha Phis in the room jumped up to meet Kary’s challenge. Collegiate members responded. Christi Gray (Beta RhoWashington State) took the microphone from Kary. “I’m so proud of my advisers that I want to do something for this campaign. I can’t meet their $500 challenge, but I can give $20. Are there others out there who will join me?” More than 100 Alpha Phi collegians ran to the stage with $20 bills. “I’ve never been so inspired in all my Alpha Phi years,” said Emily. “These women have set the bar high. We have big shoes to fill.”

Donor Makes Historic Gift, Inspires Others Through Philanthropy As a child, Diane Spry Straker (Delta Alpha-East Carolina) moved with her Navy family throughout the U.S. The one way she learned to make an impact in each community and meet new people was through philanthropy. While still in high school, she worked in Washington, D.C., as a tutor and as a cheerleading sponsor at an inner city school. “I recognized at that time that I was blessed with good fortune, and I also realized I had a responsibility to ease the path of others not as fortunate. I decided then that someday I’d make a point to help others in a major way, not calling attention to myself, but just ‘doing good,’” she says. Diane, who retired as senior vice president of the global giant SAIC, volunteered at Alpha Phi in whatever city she lived during her hectic career years. She took her financial and leadership expertise to local collegiate and alumnae chapters and served as vice president of finance and housing on the International Executive Board, then on Alpha Phi’s original housing corporation board, and – three years ago – was elected to the Foundation Board. And this past August, Diane was named Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year, a prestigious honor from the North-American Interfraternity Conference Foundation (NICF). The NICF presented her with the award during its annual ceremony at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis. Diane Straker Why this major gift to Alpha Phi? Because she believes Alpha Phi’s leadership training is truly making an impact on young women. “This is where we’re really making a difference – on campuses, in business and in our communities. We have to support these ventures,” she says. “I am passionate about Alpha Phi’s vision for leadership development.” Diane allowed the Foundation to reveal her recent gift to inspire philanthropy in all women. Her contribution – the largest single gift made by a living Alpha Phi – was the first one received for Alpha Phi’s endowment campaign for leadership. “Gifts can provide the impetus for something or someone to do something even greater,” says Diane. “When women who share a passion and vision for a cause like this join together to share time, talent and treasure, the results are powerful beyond our imagination.” Diane Straker, second from right, accepts the NICF Philanthropist of the Year award. Presenting the award (from left) are Nancy Owen Craig (Beta Chi-Bucknell), NICF representatives Mark Bauer and Kathie Garland, and Emily Lamb.

Note On The Campaign Alpha Phi’s campaign to raise $10 million by 2010 operates in a way different from most other campaigns in the Greek world. Rather than hire an expensive consultant and set up huge campaign committees of volunteers, the fundraising work is done primarily by Foundation Board and staff. “We on the staff visit different areas of the country, meet with Alpha Phi donors and involve a local Board member (past or present) in the call – someone who can help us tell the story of the importance of leadership to Alpha Phi,” says Emily Ellison Lamb (Gamma Iota-Texas Tech). “So far it’s been a huge success. We think Alpha Phi is once again paving the way with new thinking about fundraising.” Emily urges Alpha Phis to meet with the Foundation team to hear about the campaign: “We hope Alpha Phis will all learn about the impact they can make for hundreds of young women leaders.”

Alpha Phi Revitalizes Chapter at DePaul University By Megan Bouché (Epsilon-Minnesota)

2008 marked the return of Alpha Phi to the DePaul Panhellenic community, following a Fall 2006 suspension. During the time when Alpha Phi’s operations were halted, the campus saw two extensions. Chi Omega colonized in Fall 2006, and Delta Gamma began a new chapter in Fall 2007. With this growth, Alpha Phi was fortunate to return at a thriving, exciting time for DePaul Greeks. Iota Eta met as a chapter during the Winter 2008 academic term and recruited for the first time during the Spring 2008 quarter. These efforts were celebrated with the chapter’s revitalization celebration the weekend of May 17-18. The festivities began with Saturday’s Court of Ivy, led by Jaime Alsup Ryberg (Theta Gamma-Truman State) on campus in the Munroe Building. Sunday marked the initiation of the newest members of Iota Eta. Executive Director Susan Zabriskie (ThetaMichigan) presided as Lady Superior for the ceremony, Alpha Phi returns to DePaul (Iota Eta). performed in the Courtelyou Commons. Following initiation, International Executive Board Director Billie Coskey Battiato (Phi-Oklahoma) served as toastmistress for the revitalization reception. Special guests included Educational Leadership Consultant Katherine Hurd (Delta Epsilon-Iowa), Foundation Board Director Ann Brinkman (Zeta Delta-Iowa State), Associate Director of Collegiate Membership Lindsay Martin (Beta Psi-San Jose State), Program Manager of Chapter Development and Extension Morgan Bradley (Gamma Epsilon-Lake Forest), Iota Eta Chapter Adviser Molly Johnson (Eta-Boston) and Iota Eta Chapter President Betsy McDonald. Congratulations to our new initiates, chapter members and advisory team who worked so hard for Alpha Phi’s return to DePaul!

In Loving Memory Ruth Himmelman Wright

(1924-2008)

The Fraternity lost one of its most constant and influential leaders with the death of Ruth Himmelman Wright (SigmaWashington), ’44, on Aug. 26 in Seattle at the age of 83. Her daughter, Catherine Wright Roberti (Sigma-Washington) says her mother wanted to make a difference, to have her life have meaning. And she succeeded. Alpha Phi was her only volunteer organization; she knowingly gave up the chance of close friendships with women in her local community in favor of the Fraternity and deep friendships with sisters across the land. Ruth began her major service to the Fraternity in 1964 as District Governor in California and Arizona. She soared to the International Executive Board in 1966 as Director of Chapters in the Western region and then as Vice President, Collegiate Programs from 1967-70. She was elected to the preeminent Board of Trustees in 1976 and from 1978-82 served as chairman. Offered the presidency of the Fraternity, she declined so that younger women might assume the position. Catherine Roberti recalls that when her mother was asked to chair the Alpha Phi Foundation’s Capital Campaign in 1988, Ruth said, “What do I know about fundraising?” But she learned. The campaign’s goal was $1,500,000, but by its conclusion in 1992 had raised $2,035,938 for Executive Office expansion, scholarships, the Forget Me Not Fund and programs. This was the Fraternity achievement of which Ruth was most proud. Of her executive ability, Catherine says, “I know if she had been of a different generation she would have been a senior corporate executive, as was her brother.” Ruth was a person of strong principles by which she stood, not wavering with vogue enthusiasms and never faltering in good times or bad. In times of serious controversy, Ruth faced the issues squarely using wisdom and acumen to ensure Alpha Phi’s best interests prevailed. As needed, she took thoughtful risks to advance the organization. Ruth never sought center stage. Her work style was collegial and collaborative. She drew others in and acknowledged and appreciated their efforts, often deflecting credit for achievements. Many officers in the Fraternity recall meeting her early in their volunteer careers and

later being remembered by Ruth even after long periods of time. Most of the women contributing to this tribute regarded her as their mentor. She was a “bridge between the ages,” as one describes it. For her accomplishments, she was recognized with the Fraternity’s top honor, the Ivy Vine Award in 1992, and at Convention 2008 she received her 65-year membership pin in front of 550 applauding Conventioneers. Ruth lived – really lived – up until her last moment. In her final year she had conceived of an ambitious Alpha Phi history project. With failing strength she brought herself to Convention in June to confer with others and finalize plans for this endeavor. Her thoughts in her last moments of life were of this program to enhance the Fraternity’s heritage appreciation. Such characteristic devotion rightly earned her the admiration and love of many, who will miss Ruth’s eloquent grace and kindly guidance. Memorial contributions for this true Alpha Phi statesman may be sent to the Alpha Phi Foundation at her request.
