S

isters of Alpha Gamma Delta! I’m so excited to share my first Viewpoint with you as your new International President! These are such thrilling times in our sisterhood, and in this biennium, Alpha Gamma Delta is poised to reach new heights in all that we do.

Rie Gerah Hoehner International President

In preparing for installation at International Convention this past summer, I read a letter found in the March 1914 issue of the Quarterly. It was written by Jennie Titus Smith Morris, our first Grand President, whose words of 100 years ago resonated with me and certainly captured the essence of coming Full Circle. As you read her complete letter on page 48, you’ll see her message is simple: Our goal in Alpha Gamma Delta should always be to seek the best, to strive to be our best and to continually reach for excellence! As an organization, we have women all around us who are deeply committed to this sisterhood, including each of you. The talents of our sisters are endless, and while I admit that true perfection is hardly attainable, I agree with Vince Lombardi who said, “If we chase perfection, we will catch excellence!” I challenge each of us to set our sights at not only achieving the highest standards but also to become the inspiration for those around us to reach beyond as well. We have made significant strides in our 110 years of existence, but we can’t stop here. It will take all of us as sisters to achieve our greatest results! I encourage you to inspire those around you to seek, to strive and to

reach for perfection and to celebrate the excellence you achieve throughout your journey. During the coming biennium, your leadership is committed to striving for excellence in: • Communication with and among our membership, • Education and member development for our collegians and our alumnae, • Advisory support to all of our colonies, chapters and alumnae groups through volunteer support, training and resources, • Housing and the safety of our sisterhood, • Celebration of our Ritual and traditions, • Our sisterhood as a whole, and in being there for one another, as sisters and as friends. Just as Jennie wrote all those years ago, “I do not wonder at the heights she has attained…[but] it will not do…to rest upon the laurels of past endeavors.” We have the membership, we have the leadership and we have the sisterhood. Now is the time to live up to our privilege of wearing the Alpha Gamma Delta Badge! To this end, let our watchword forever be “Onward and Upward!” Loyally,

Rie Gerah Hoehner International President quarterly

YOUR VOICE

Dear Editor, Around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, I received a call that there was a fire at our Alpha Beta-University of Michigan chapter house. Our Chapter Housing Supervisor quickly told me all 64 of the women were accounted for (thanks to a well-executed plan), and the fire department was on site. Word of the fire spread quickly, and I received messages via email and Facebook from alumnae sending their well wishes and wanting to know how they could help. Truly, the outpouring of support both in person and in other ways was amazing. I wanted to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all those who made this situation easier to handle. Thank you to the invaluable International Headquarter's staff, local alumnae and sisters who made the Disaster Relief Fund a reality. I have always known Alpha Gamma Delta to be an organization of wonderful individuals, but it was special to see them all in action. Sincerely, Christine Tompkins Kulka Alpha Beta House Association President

New Video for the Philanthropy Round of Recruitment

Alpha Gamma Delta Establishes a Philanthropic Relationship As Alpha Gams, we’re encouraged to “contribute to the world’s work” by participating in service opportunities that make an impact in our communities. International Council is pleased to announce that we have officially established a relationship with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for our community service efforts! We are excited to share our passion for diabetes awareness and education with others. The relationship with the ADA is evolving and more information will be shared as soon as it’s available!

ΑΓΔ Foundation

The Fraternity is now offering a valuable resource for collegiate chapters—a video to play during the philanthropy round of Formal Recruitment! This video highlights members whose lives have been affected by diabetes. It features the story of Kathryn Washam, a collegian at Beta Xi-Purdue University who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of three. In addition, this video will help educate potential new members about what Alpha Gamma Delta members are doing to support our philanthropic focus of diabetes awareness and education, while hosting fundraisers for the Foundation and participating in community service efforts that contribute to the world's work. Check out the video here!

Since it was established in 2004, The Leadership Institute–Women with Purpose, Inc. has been committed to the development of women’s leadership potential. The Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, along with donations from many Alpha Gams, provided the initial funds so that The Leadership Institute could open its doors a decade ago. To date, we are proud to share that The Leadership Institute has impacted tens of thousands women across the globe, including many of our Alpha Gam sisters! As of July 31, 2014, The Leadership Institute merged with the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, which means the organization will no longer serve external clients. This merger, however, provides Alpha Gamma Delta members direct access to a myriad of resources and curriculum from The Leadership Institute. This curriculum extends beyond the collegiate years and operational programming. Women who receive these resources gain powerful leadership skills and the confidence to use these skills to grow personally and professionally. We’re pleased that Alpha Gamma Delta sisters are going to continue to benefit from these programs so that they can be inspired to make an impact within their communities and beyond. If you have any questions about this merger, please contact Julie Waitman Cretin, Executive Director of the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, at jcretin@alphagammadeltafoundation.org.

Day 1: Reconnecting

C

onvention kicked off on Wednesday, July 9, with a variety of fun, welcoming events. The focus of the day was to reconnect: with sisters, with our Purpose and with Alpha Gamma Delta. Throughout the day, attendees were able to check into the JW Marriott at their leisure, attend a preConvention workshop and participate in tours of International Headquarters after completing Secret Work. Later in the evening, the Opening Session began with the Processional and the famed Flag Parade including the flags of all installed chapters. After Opening Ritual, led by Ritual Committee Member Patricia O'Connor Vreeland, Epsilon Iota-University of Northern Colorado, and the singing of both the United States and Canadian national anthems, past International President Jackie Brannon Stutts welcomed sisters to Indianapolis and set the stage for the next four days. “Convention is a place where we come Full Circle to remember and celebrate who we are, and it will enable us to leave inspired to become the members, chapters and Fraternity that we aspire to be,” she said. “My hope is that all of you will leave feeling celebrated for the contributions you make to the Fraternity, grounded in the Ritual and Purpose, strengthened by sisterhood and committed to elevating expectations.” Before wrapping up the Opening Session, Jackie officially dedicated the new International Headquarters building at 8710 N. Meridian Street in Indianapolis. The dedication received a standing ovation from the audience. After the Opening Session, attendees were invited to a welcome reception, complete with photo booths, life-sized games, fun music and sweet treats.

Highlights from the Biennium We’re always there for one another: • Total collegiate membership exceeded 11,000, a growth of 17 percent over last biennium. • Five new chapters were either installed, reinstalled or re-established: Theta Omega-University of South Carolina, Lambda Gamma-Villanova University, Delta Alpha-University of Southern California, Delta Eta-San Diego State University, Delta EpsilonUniversity of California, Los Angeles and Epsilon Lambda-University of Central Missouri. • The Recruitment Team is piloting a new Membership Selection process and the use of online tools. • In 2013, a new Volunteer Service Team structure was introduced that groups chapters and clubs by institution similarities, rather than geographical areas. • More than 200 donors gave to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund, totaling over $44,000. We’re here for the whole person: • The Leadership Conference (TLC) was hosted in Indianapolis, Indiana, June 13-15, 2013, and focused on taking care of ourselves and harm reduction.

VIEW FROM OUR SISTER INSTAGRAMMERS

We stand for something: • The Fraternity GPA requirement was raised to 2.5 for individuals and 2.9 for chapters. The Fraternity GPA for the biennium is 3.164. • A new recognition system was introduced to evaluate our alumnae chapters and clubs, which allows more local flexibility for community support and member programming. • New Good Standing requirements for collegiate chapters were developed over the biennium and became effective on June 1, 2014. We inspire the woman: • In 2012, the Alpha Gamma Delta Experience was completely launched. • Forty collegians received grants to attend LeaderShape and UIFI. • The Fraternity’s Skilled Facilitator program was introduced, providing advisors and officers with the skills to facilitate in front of their peers. • This biennium, all Executive Council officers now have training resources on the Learning Center. New trainings will be introduced in the coming biennium. We impact the world: • The Fraternity established a relationship with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for our community service efforts to help fulfill our commitment to diabetes awareness and education. 11

hursday, the first full day of Convention, was all about celebrating individual and group achievements through awards and celebrating sisterhood through Ritual. First thing in the morning, before the first General Session, attendees had one of several opportunities to “Get Connected!,” a new addition to this Convention. One of the most important aspects of Convention is simply connecting with other Alpha Gams, and this time was set aside just for sisters to meet up and enjoy conversation.

View a list of all Convention award winners here!

The General Session kicked off the celebration as Jackie shared the numerous accomplishments of the past biennium, such as the formation of the Fraternity Housing Corporation, exceeding 11,000 collegiate members (a 17 percent increase over the last biennium!) and the installation of five chapters over the past two years. (More highlights from the biennium appear on the previous page.) Alumna Teri McKeever, Delta Alpha-University of Southern California, was celebrated for her career contributions with the Distinguished Citizen Award, and attendees were challenged by keynote speaker Dr. Erin Foley to create a sisterhood empowered by their individual strengths and supported by their sisters. (Learn more about Dr. Erin Foley.) During the highly-anticipated awards luncheon, 73 collegiate chapters, alumnae groups and house associations received awards for their exceptional work over the biennium. (View a complete list of award winners.) A special breakout session followed, titled “Full Circle: An Interactive History Experience,” which highlighted the ways Alpha Gamma Delta has played a role in greater society as well as the effects that societal events have had on the Fraternity. It was the perfect transition to end the evening with the Ritual services and Honors of Epsilon Pi Banquet and Service. 12 quarterly

Day 3: Empower

B

uilding on Thursday’s celebration, Friday focused on empowering sisters to continually strive to reach the highest ideals by providing educational programming about strategies for attainment. The day began once again with set-aside time to connect, followed by Convention’s first Business Meeting. For the first time in several years, a Constitutional resolution was considered by Convention delegates, which would have required both the red and buff roses to be depicted together when used in Fraternity publications, logos, public relations materials or at Fraternity events. Following parliamentary procedure, discussion was held, and the resolution failed to pass. After the Business Meeting, sisters were offered the option of several breakout sessions, divided into seven different tracks: chapter development, recruitment, membership, harm prevention and reduction, alumnae groups, house associations and The Skilled Facilitator, a facilitation training program. Each track included four different sessions, offered at consecutive times during the remainder of the day. Breakout sessions wrapped up around 6 p.m., in time for sisters to don their baseball caps and Alpha Gam gear for an Indians game, Indianapolis’ minor league baseball team whose stadium is located just across the street from the JW Marriott. One highlight from the evening: alumna Sarah Horn, Theta Tau-Belmont University, brought the crowd to their feet with her rendition of the national anthem! (Check out the video on the next page!)

York City, which has since evolved into The World Needs More Love Letters, a global love letter writing organization that she started. But she didn’t just get there overnight. Her first step? Granting herself permission to believe she could make a difference. (Learn more about Hannah and The World Needs More Love Letters.) Before beginning the Installation of Officers, Jackie took a moment to thank sisters before officially handing over the gavel to the new International President, Rie Gerah Hoehner.

T

he last day of Convention centered on the impact our members, chapters and the Fraternity can have on our communities and the world. On this closing day, over 250 sisters jumped out of bed early for the one-mile Convention Philanthropy Walk. With funds raised from the walk, the Foundation presented a donation to the American Diabetes Association-Indiana Area to support Camp John Warvel, a camp in northern Indiana for children learning to live with diabetes.

“As I leave International Council after a total of 13 years of service, I need to thank every member of Alpha Gamma Delta for allowing me to serve as your International President,” she said. “Thank you for your trust, for your loving support and for the many opportunities of personal growth and expanded sisterhood. I have met and worked with so many of you who have been a true blessing for me. You are remarkable women of whom I am proud to call sisters.”

A few hours later, during the General Session, Lauren Allen Hammack, Director of Professional Development on the Volunteer Service Team, led the audience in a screening and discussion of the praised film, “MissRepresentation.” Through reflection and conversation during the screening, attendees learned how they and their peers can influence positive change that supports women in their leadership journeys. (Learn more about “MissRepresentation.”)

Once installed as International President, Rie set the tone for the next biennium with a reading of a letter from Founder Jennie Titus Smith Morris that first appeared in the March 1914 Quarterly. (You can also read the letter on page 48.) Jennie’s message was simple—we must always seek excellence.

After the Foundation Awards Luncheon, which recognized Foundation donors, Jewel Society members and Corinthian Society members, sisters returned to their seats in the General Session room for the Closing Business Session. Past International President Jackie Brannon Stutts highlighted all that had been accomplished in the past four days together. Additionally, she announced that Alpha Gamma Delta has officially established a relationship with the American Diabetes Association for its community service efforts, with more details to come this winter. To continue the call to lead, Jackie introduced keynote speaker Hannah Brencher to share her thoughts on how sisters could take everything they had learned and experienced at Convention back home. In October 2010, Hannah began leaving love letters all over New 16 quarterly

summer 2014

“Our goals should be to seek the best, to be our best, to reach for perfection and to achieve excellence,” Rie said. “I challenge each of us to set our sights at the highest standards and reach for those goals of excellence and to become the inspiration to those around us to do the same.” That message and a feeling of a stronger sisterhood carried into the Feast of Roses Banquet. In a beautiful symbol of sisterhood, the darkened room slowly filled with light as newly-installed International Vice President-Extension Lee Woodham Digiovanni read each chapter name, and sisters lit their tapers in honor of their initiating chapter. After the last candle was lit, over 650 sisters left their seats to form a circle around the room and close out Convention with some of the Fraternity’s favorite songs. In that moment, the room was filled a true sense of coming Full Circle: a feeling of understanding where we have come from and a commitment to continuing our story by reaching for more.

Leading the Way for a Healthier Community

G

ratiot County, home to the city of Alma and our Zeta Nu Chapter at Alma College, is located deep in the heart of Michigan. Alma is the largest city in the county, with a population of right around 10,000, and like many small towns in the state, it was hit hard by the “Great Recession” of 2007. It’s been a slow recovery process in Gratiot County, fighting an uphill battle of lower wages and a stagnant unemployment rate. As Zeta Nu Chapter’s Philanthropy Coordinator, Jamie Hiller was always on the lookout for how she and her sisters could offer the city of Alma and its residents a helping hand. A year earlier, the county had opened a free health clinic in Alma for the numerous Gratiot County adults without health insurance. Jamie was involved with a public affairs group on campus, which mainly served as a means to connect students with volunteer needs in their community. As one of the biggest (and most needed) projects in Alma, the group was heavily involved in providing support to get the clinic’s doors open as soon as possible. When the clinic did open for business, patients poured in. A recent estimate showed that in the area, 18 percent of adults were uninsured. With a higher than average rate of obesity and diabetes in the county, the clinic was drowning under the sheer number of people who showed early signs of diabetes and those already affected without adequate resources to manage their disease. “They were having a really big issue with people trying to use sugar as a substitute for insulin, and they were sending people to the hospital because of other issues with diabetes,” Jamie said. That was her light bulb moment. She had recently done some research about the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, in preparation for the chapter’s upcoming Formal Recruitment. While browsing the Foundation’s website, she came across information about their Diabetes Education and Awareness Grants, and it just clicked. The Gratiot County Free Clinic would be a perfect recipient.

Jamie (pictured right) with her Zeta Nu Chapter sisters.

With information from the Foundation’s website in hand, Jamie made plans to meet with a few associates of the clinic to propose her idea. She excitedly presented them with a list of previous grant recipients, so they could see how much help the Foundation had been to other supporters of diabetes education and awareness in the past. Realizing the potential in front of them, discussions quickly turned to how they could utilize the grant money, with Jamie at the table to provide feedback on what she thought would match up best with the Foundation’s mission. Through Jamie’s effort to connect the Gratiot County Free Clinic and the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, they received a grant of almost $10,000. That money allowed the clinic to host education and support classes for patients diagnosed with and at risk for Type 1 and 2 diabetes. They could provide patients with test strips, lancets and glucose monitors if they couldn’t afford those supplies. Also, they were shown recipes for making healthy, nutritious meals on a budget that worked to combat long-term complications of diabetes. The relationship Jamie has established with the clinic created a much wider network of support for the nonprofit, which is run entirely run by volunteers. Her chapter sisters committed to work several volunteer hours over the course of the school year and worked together to produce a diabetic-friendly cookbook specifically to donate to the clinic. “Alma is such a small town and such a small community; it is really great for us to be able to see the help we are able to do and to see how it has inspired others,” Jamie said. “A lot of students are now working with the free clinic, and it’s great to see that growth and the connection between our school and the community that we are in!”

Tallahassee Area Alumnae Chapter

The Tallahassee Area Alumnae Chapter held its “Downton Abbey Ladies Tea” this past June. Our vision was to unite our members in a venue that would appeal to all age groups. We dressed in vintage hats and enjoyed our teatime fare in a cottage on the grounds of Goodwood Plantation. We had a wonderful time together! -Martha Newland Guemple

Tallahassee Area Alumnae Chapter Greater Cleveland Alumnae Chapter

The Greater Cleveland Alumnae Chapter has been enjoying the summer and is gearing up for another fun-filled year! Some highlights from this past spring included our Valentine’s Day tea, where we enjoyed a tea buffet with Alpha Iota-Baldwin Wallace University and stuffed gift bags with supplies and toiletries to donate to Edna House for Women. At International Reunion Day (IRD), we shared old pictures and stories from our time as collegians. Those of us who attended International Convention had a blast and were proud to bring home the Helen Mae Clarahan Spiese Alumnae Panhellenic Award. We were also thrilled to see Alpha Iota Chapter win an Annulet! Our alumnae chapter will close out the summer by attending a concert series at University Circle in downtown Cleveland, and we will help kick off the school year at Baldwin Wallace University by volunteering as potential new members for mock recruitment. As the fall progresses, we will participate in a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation walk at the zoo, enjoy a night at the casino, volunteer at a local food bank, have a holiday cookie exchange and more. We are looking forward to another great year! -Jaime Winer

Wichita Alumnae Club

During a busy spring, we joined forces with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and participated in their walk in April. We then donated to their auction event in May, and several alumnae showed up to help support their cause. We are gearing up for the upcoming year with several fun activities slated as fall approaches. Recently, a couple of alumnae made a trip back to Hays, Kansas, to help clean and organize the Epsilon Mu-Fort Hays State University house. While they were there, they made dinner for the collegians and stuffed goody bags to welcome them back to school. -Daphne Perez Nusz

Alumnae chapter/club recaps for the Fall 2014 Quarterly are due October 1. Fill out the form online, or email your report to quarterly@alphagammadelta.org.

Chesapeake Alumnae Chapter is moving full steam ahead into the new biennium! In May, we provided breakfast for the collegians of Zeta Delta-Towson University before their Initiation Service. We also performed Officer Installations and Senior Rededication on-site the same day so as to involve our collegians as much as possible. Everyone had a wonderful time, and the collegians really appreciated the refreshments! In June, we attended an Orioles game, and in July, eight of us traveled to International Convention. We also spent a relaxing evening enjoying pizza and gelato while attending Baltimore’s Little Italy Outdoor Film Festival. Our alumnae chapter has a lot planned for the rest of this year, including a Disney-themed Alpha Gam Always event and celebrating the 35th anniversary of Zeta Delta-Towson University’s Homecoming. We are looking forward to new initiatives such as heightening our active support for Zeta Delta Chapter and starting a new Rosebuds group! -Nicole Brown McConlogue 21

Hope Changes Everything

t’s true what they say about life; you really can’t ever tell where it might take you. Jillian Palka Miller, Alpha SigmaIndiana University of Pennsylvania, is a pretty good example of that.

Shortly after the attacks on September 11, 2001, an Alpha Gam sister invited Jillian to come with her to hear someone speak about how dogs had been utilized at “Ground Zero” for search and rescue. They had also provided comfort for rescuers who spent weeks trying to recover people from the rubble. That’s where she happened to meet Sally Irvin, the founder and Executive Director of the Indiana Canine Assistant Network (ICAN), and Nora, a shy, black Labrador puppy. “She was telling me all this stuff about dogs and prisoners. I kept thinking, ‘I have no idea what this lady is talking about!’ but it sounded really interesting,” Jillian said. ICAN, in fact, does bring together three unique populations: people living with disabilities, incarcerated prisoners and the most lovable four-legged friends on the planet. Their mission is to train and place service dogs with children and adults living with disabilities, while providing life and job skills to inmates who actually train the dogs inside Indiana correctional facilities. Jillian had always had an interest in the human/animal bond, and after learning more about ICAN, she went home and signed up to be a volunteer. With her background in nonprofit management, she was appointed one of ICAN’s first board members. This is where Nora comes back into her story. Earlier in the year, Nora, along with two other puppy friends, began their training with inmates at the Rockville Correctional Facility, the largest state prison for women in Indiana. Inside the prison walls, there is only so much socialization a puppy can be exposed to. Nora was a little bit shy, and her trainer thought she could benefit from exploring additional environments and situations to build her confidence. So, she became Jillian’s new sidekick, accompanying her to the grocery store, to ball games and to work. “Fortunately for us, she never quite got [her confidence], so she was released from 22 quarterly

the program, and became our family pet,” Jillian said. “She won her way into my own heart, and that tethered me to the organization.” Jillian was eventually appointed chairman of ICAN’s board, and even after she left that role in 2007, she continued to volunteer when she could. But then, last June, she received a call from Sally. She was looking to step away from her role as Executive Director to explore another one of her passions—teaching. Sally wanted Jillian to consider applying for her position, and she was thrilled about the opportunity. Jillian came on board in August 2013 to help steer the organization, which has now grown to include five full-time staff members, 46 dogs in training and over 130 volunteers.

In the 12 years of its existence, ICAN has worked tirelessly to develop new curriculum in order to meet the growing need of service dogs for a wide-variety of disabilities, including mobility issues, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Autism and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, to name a few. In 2008, ICAN saw a new need emerge. Applications were pouring in from people with Type 1 diabetes who were looking for a dog that could alert them of their dropping blood sugar levels. So, ICAN’s team learned how to train a dog to sense that chemical change and alert their owner before a potential medical crisis. Despite curriculum development, the training model for the service dogs remains virtually the same since ICAN’s inception. They maintain a working relationship

with a few correctional facilities in Indiana, whose inmates have the opportunity to apply to be a handler. After completing an application and submitting a résumé, potential candidates go through a multi-tier interview process with ICAN’s Director of Training. If selected, the handler spends two years learning “dog-manship,” like how to groom, how to care for a dog’s ears, how to cut a dog’s nails, etc. Performance evaluations along the way help determine when a handler is ready to receive his or her own puppy. In addition, ICAN has a relationship with Indiana’s Department of Labor, so upon completion of the two-year apprenticeship, each handler receives a certification in dog training and grooming. “Only three percent of inmates who have worked in our program have returned to prison after their release,” Jillian said. “We believe based on that data that we are not only giving them a skill set to find viable employment but we are also giving them a little bit of a change of heart. Something intrinsically changes in them. It’s not just a certification.” Additional volunteers pick up the dogs in training on a regular basis for what ICAN calls “furloughs,” a two-week period outside of the prison walls to expose them to public places and interactions. Besides that utmost important training, the last ingredient is just good, old-fashioned loving. Each dog spends at least two years in training. Before the dog goes home with its new family, they all meet with the handler, within the prison, in order for the handler to teach the new family everything there is to know about their new best friend. Of all the good Jillian gets to witness, this is her favorite. “My favorite moment is whenever they come in together, when you look at someone who has made a pretty big mistake and someone who is living with a disability, and all of those barriers evaporate through the conduit of the dog,” she said.

These service dogs make an indescribable difference in the lives of the people with whom they find a forever home. If there was ever a story that could come close to explaining that impact, Jillian would pick this: In June 2013, ICAN celebrated the graduation of its 100th placement, a Red Fox Labrador Retriever named Festus. He was placed with a man named Nick, an Army veteran who was wounded during one of his tours in Iraq. A mortar had exploded only a few yards behind him, leaving him with serious mobility limitations and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Multiple surgeries and years of physical therapy helped Nick to navigate his physical disability, but even with specialist after specialist, he still suffered from several flashbacks a day. Each flashback put his brain right back to those days in combat in Iraq and rendered him unresponsive for long periods of time. His wife, Rachel, worried constantly about leaving him alone, especially with their young son. Festus changed all of that for this young family. “His wife doesn’t have to worry about Nick going into a trance while he is watching their son, and their son walking out the front door or pulling a hot pan off the stove. She knows that she can leave her husband and her son at home alone, and Festus will make sure they are okay,” Jillian said. “It has totally changed this family from a place of stress and anxiety to a place of peace and tranquility. That all happened because of a four-legged animal who needed a place to belong as well.” That is just one story in 100 though. There are so many more to come. “I often say, and I think my staff probably gets tired of hearing it, but I believe in hope,” she said. “And if we can provide it, even through the conduit of a dog, hope changes everything.” You can learn more about ICAN at icandog.org. 23

Meet Laura

L

aura Lee Dellinger (pictured on the right), PhiOregon State University, was recently named “Portland Business Journal’s” Women of Influence Executive of the Year. She is currently the president of the Metropolitan Group, a full-service social change agency located in Portland, Oregon, that crafts and integrates strategic and creative services. WHO ARE YOUR MAIN CLIENTS, AND WHAT KIND OF WORK DO YOU DO FOR THEM? Our clients are large nonprofit organizations, nongovernmental agencies, government bodies and sociallyresponsible businesses. They hire us because they need help communicating their story, their brand and their product or their service to ensure they reach the communities they are designed to serve. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH METROPOLITAN GROUP? One of our founders was a friend of mine from high school. One day he called me and said, “What would it take for you to come help me build this thing?” My answer was that I always wanted to be working for something that I could believe in. I wanted to use my life to advance social good. And he said, “Okay!” We were just five people then, and now we are almost 40 people with offices in four states doing national and international work. WHAT IS ONE OF THE COOLEST PROJECTS YOU HAVE WORKED ON? There are so many! I can’t just pick one, so I’m going to pick two. We worked on a campaign in San Diego County, California, that was about mental health, specifically designed for the Latino community. The tool that we used was a fotonovela, which is like a soap opera in Latino culture, but in print, sort of like a comic book story. We distributed it in many ways, but for one example, two newspapers published in the county serialized the fotonovela into weekly installments, over the course of 12 weeks. My other favorite is a campaign I did for the National Youth Advocacy Coalition. They had a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to do outreach to African American GLBTQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning) youth between the ages of 13-24 to get them tested for HIV and actually get their results. Back at that time, the technology that we now have that allows you to find out your results immediately didn’t exist. Many of the people who were getting tested never came back to get their results. It was a very peerdriven campaign, and in the first year, we increased testing by 155 percent. In the end, the campaign ended up in 20 states. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? What I love most is that no two days are ever the same, and everything that I do is making the world a better place for other people and myself. IF YOU COULD GIVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE TO SISTERS, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Be who you are, do what you love and act with integrity. 24 quarterly

KNOW HOW TO

Complete the New Recruitment Recommendation Did you know the Recruitment Information Form (RIF) has undergone an update and a name change? The Recruitment Recommendation, or Rec for short, has been revised to replace both the RIF and the Legacy Introduction Form (LIF). Sisters may now indicate a legacy relationship directly on the Rec instead of completing a separate form! Legacy information and policies are also outlined on the Rec. There is one new important note regarding legacies: If a legacy is released from recruitment by a chapter, a phone call will only be made to the legacy connection if the correct contact information is provided on the Rec. Additionally, a select few chapters that receive a high volume of legacy recommendations are not required to call the legacy connection, as approved by International Council. So, to the most important question: How do you complete a Rec? It’s simple! Here are a few quick instructions to get you started. 1

Go to alphagammadelta.org and click on “Complete a new Rec!” button from the home page of our website.

2

Click on “Recruitment Recommendation” to download the form. (Or download here.) A list of the most recent recruitment dates can also be found there.

3

Because the form is designed to be an editable PDF, you can fill in the information on your computer and then print, or you can choose to print the form and fill it in by hand.

4

5

The second page of the Rec is a Supplemental Activities Form; however, if you would rather attach a detailed résumé, you will not need to complete that section. Once finished, the Rec should be submitted to the chapter’s Membership Coordinator by mail. Feel free to attach photos and transcripts if available! To find a list of chapter mailing addresses, go to alphagammadelta.org and click on “Complete a new Rec!” again. There, you will find a link to the list of addresses. (Or download here.)

As a reminder, alumnae and collegiate members in Good Standing may write recommendations. You can also find a link to the Recruitment Recommendation in the Resource Center of myAlphaGam under General Fraternity Materials. Happy recommending!

Our Watchword: A Letter from Jennie

I

n March 1914, the Fraternity was looking forward to celebrating a 10 year anniversary in May. As a part of the spring issue of the Quarterly, Editor Edith Sage Hoyt, Delta-University of Minnesota, solicited our Founders to write a letter commemorating the passing of almost a decade since Alpha Gamma Delta’s founding. This is Founder Jennie Titus Smith Morris’ letter, as it appeared in the magazine over 100 years ago.*

*A copy of this letter was given to each Convention attendee after Rie Gerah Hoehner, International President, referenced “Onward and Upward” in her inaugural speech as the Fraternity’s watchword for the next biennium. 48 quarterly
