To find someone who relishes the subject of hurricanes would be rare; however, the topic is a reality in the BVI and one that must be addressed. Fortunately, the area we’re situated in on the globe has seen less ‘action’ than some of our neighbours with 2010’s Hurricane Earl being a recent exception; the main positive in that affair was that damage to buildings was relatively light. The scarcity of hurricane impact is a strong allure for choosing the BVI as the location for your Caribbean property purchase in stark contrast to other islands that endure unpleasant conclusions during hurricane season. Nevertheless, it’s always prudent to be informed and so here are some facts about ‘hurricane vs BVI buildings’ amassed from architects and realtors over our VIPY publication tenure. Any property buyer or individual constructing a new-build home would want to use this checklist with their employed professionals, just to be doubly safe.

Almond-Lemon Custard Tart

For the tart crust: ½ cup butter, softened ¼ cup sugar ½ cup ground almonds ½ cup all-purpose flour Preheat oven to 350ºF. Mix butter, sugar, ground almonds, flour, and eggs in a medium mixing bowl. Line 6 tart pans with parchment paper. Divide dough evenly 6 ways and press into the bottom of each tart pan. Bake for 10-15 minutes. For the lemon custard filling: ¾ cup sugar 2 eggs 1/8 cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup fresh lemon juice Powdered sugar In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together sugar, eggs, flour, and lemon juice, until almost doubled in size. Evenly pour custard filling into each tart pan and bake for an additional 20 minutes. Let cool completely and store in refrigerator. When you’re ready to serve, carefully turn over the tart pans and lightly tap out the tart. Sprinkle top with powdered sugar and serve with lemon garnishes. Serves 6.

Though not really a history tale this time, we are pleased to celebrate a present day event with regard to our traditional seafaring culture, the Virgin Islands sloops… The H. Lavity Stoutt Community College through its Virgin Island Studies Institute and the Maritime Museum has—by the kind donation of two private individuals—recently acquired two traditional sloops to add to their growing fleet of locally designed boats. The most recent addition is a half-finished hull which was traditionally constructed in Anegada by local shipwright Watson White. She was the result of a UNESCO funded project which had Mr. White teaching traditional wooden boat building skills to several local youths. The project began about seven years ago and lasted about a year until the limited funding ran out. Although successful in teaching skills

to young men which would otherwise been lost, it left a half finished hull under a shed in Anegada. Over the years, a hurricane blew the roof off the shed and Mr. White sold most of his property to what has now become the Anegada Beach Club, an upscale and green resort. With the threat of termites invading the frame, it was time to make a move or lose any hope of finishing the sloop. The problem as with most endeavours came down to money, or lack of it. Funding at the College has been cut over the last few years and there just wasn’t enough in the Maritime Museum budget to take on a project like this. The museum and Virgin Islands Studies Institute has come to rely more and more on help from the private sector to achieve their goals in the preservation of Virgin Islands culture; this time help came from a long-time supporter, VP Bank. VP Bank has in the past helped fund the publishing of Building a Virgin Islands Sloop, a book I authored as a primary school tool to educate the young about traditional wooden sloop construction. They purchased Intrepid, a traditional wooden sloop discovered in St. Croix

As the committee and a select few volunteers literally ‘get their feet wet’ learning what it takes to have successful nurseries over this first year, these lessons learned will be passed on to the local community to help participate in the programme. You’re shot into the air high above the ocean’s surface, feeling the wind on your cheeks and the waves splash against your skin. Spectators stare in awe and ponder what could possibly cause you to shoot above the water’s surface at such an incredible speed. Flyboards and hoverboards are among the hottest new trends in extreme water sports, gaining popularity in locations throughout the Caribbean. The intriguing activity is now available to try at Leverick Bay in the North Sound on Virgin Gorda with the experts at Blue Rush Water Sports. Blue Rush Water Sports was founded by cousins Trevor Walters and Josh Wheatley as a new watersport enterprise in the North Sound. What began with two jet skis has expanded to include a diverse array of water activities including kayaks, hobie cats, paddle boards, and its latest addition, flyboards and hoverboards.

After numerous requests from customers who tried the company’s other activities, the guys decided to invest in this cutting-edge device that permits flight over the sea. The original flyboard, invented in the fall of 2012 by Franky Zapata, is a personal jet pack which mounts to the rider’s feet, attached by a 55 foot hose connected to a personal watercraft (PWC) – typically a jet ski- which provides a blast of water with enough power to propel them up to 40 feet in the air. Hoverboards were introduced after flyboards with the same technical design, yet instead of strapping the feet into two shoes, they are perpendicular to the board using slip-in bindings such as those on a kite board. Using aflyboard must always be done under the supervision of experts, such as the qualified professionals at Blue Rush. Riders are provided with a lifejacket and helmet, and must complete a five minute safety training session to ensure that they will not come into contact with foreign objects.

Although the sport appears to be intimidating and looks quite challenging, using a flyboard is surprisingly easy to learn, and can be enjoyed by anyone ages seven and up. With assistance, riders strap their feet into the shoes on the board and are lowered into the water in an upright, standing position with their legs remaining as straight as possible. Navigation on the flyboard is done by using the knees and ankles, pointing the toes down to move forward, using the knees to rotate, and the arms to stabilise. The power of the water is controlled by the driver of the PWC who watches to identify the rider’s positioning to increase or decrease the power to provide a comfortable descent back into the water. “For beginners, the flyboard requires little to no body strength and that’s because the board takes care of everything. However, when you get into the backflips, dolphin dives and all the other high-powered moves then you will need mid-section and lower body power to execute the moves successfully,” said Trevor Walters, co-founder of Blue Rush Water Sports. The beauty of this exciting new sport is that it requires no skill and little confidence in order to ride successfully. In fact, Trevor guarantees that if Blue Rush doesn’t get you flying in the first ten minutes, your session is free.

FUNDRAISING AND EVENTS

In the past, the foundation raised money by requesting donations from companies and individuals who support them. However, HAF is now working with these sponsors to fundraise through raffles and events which bring the charity to the public’s attention and encourage the community to get involved. HAF has many ideas for future events in the BVI, including the prospects to host an exciting World Aids Day later this year.

Prepare to take flight as you spread your wings and expand your mind by exposing yourself to a whole new world of artistic creativity. Named after what our local culture calls the American Kestrel Sparrow Hawk, ‘The Killy,’ Killi Killi Arts Company invites residents and visitors to the British Virgin Islands to join classes and social gatherings founded on a passion for arts and the spirit of community. Killi Killi was established in January 2014 by Nick and Vanessa Cook, and Mary Ormond to expand the options offered in the creative arts for children and families. The company operates on a non-profit organisation model (awaiting official status), therefore all the furniture, toys and equipment at Killi Killi have been donated by businesses and individuals in the community. “We want to be a friendly, ‘door-open’ community centre where all are welcome to just hang out and have fun,” said Cloudia, theatre practitioner and dance instructor at Killi Killi.
