ALONG THE THAMES

W

elcome to the December/January issue. As you read this we will only be a

few weeks away from the end of yet another year, this one, filled with great achievements and fantastic memories from a wonderful summer of sport.

We would like to wish both readers and advertisers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for your support and we look forward to being with you as we head into our seventh year. It is hard to believe that the magazine was started in 2006 and I am sure the years are passing faster and faster. It could be because I am getting older, but also beacuse not only do I live by deadlines but also by school terms and it seems to make the year”whizz” by!! I’d also like to say a big thank you to all those who have contributed to the magazine this year. A few of our regular contributors have moved on as their jobs have taken them away from the local area but we also have some new faces joining us - welcome to Colette, who will be putting together a regular article on fitness. As always a jam-packed editon, including another fabulous competition from Benefit on Page 40; a new year, a new you and new eyebrow to boot. This edition has a particular focus on health and fitness as we eat our way to Christmas and then inevitably wanting to lose those extra pounds thereafter! We hope you find some of these tips useful in both the lead up to and after Christmas. We hope you enjoy this edition and as always.... Until next time, Happy Reading..........

Make your gifts dazzling this Christmas

W

ant your gifts to look as dazzling as the tree they’re under? Here’s how to have Christmas all wrapped up “Just imagine the person’s face lighting up when you give them the gift,” says Julie Domican, who works in visual merchandising at John Lewis. GETTING STARTED First, you need to shop for your supplies. “Choose your paper and your ribbons etc,” says Domican. “Make sure everything matches nicely, or if you want to go for multiple colours, make sure they go well together.” You’ll also need a suitable pair of scissors, and a clear, solid surface to work on. A table is ideal, or you may prefer to sit on the floor. It may be a good idea to lay a protective sheet to avoid scraping precious surfaces. Domican recommends using double-sided tape, for a really professional finish - as the tape won’t be visible on the outside. Failing that, tape that comes in a dispenser will make the job a lot easier than having to snip off pieces of sticky-tape as you go. WRAP ESSENTIALS: Snowflake gift wrap (3m), £3, John Lewis Caroline Gardner Christmas trees luxury wrapping paper, £2.40 per sheet, www. carolinegardner.com and various stockists nationwide Caroline Gardner Christmas jumper pattern luxury wrapping paper, £2.40 per sheet, www. carolinegardner.com and various stockists nationwide Vintage Disney wrapping paper, £3.99, Butlers (www. butlers-online.co.uk)

ALONG THE THAMES

TUCK AND TRIM To work out how much paper you need per item, Domican says the general rule is to place the gift on the paper - with enough paper on all sides to fold over the top, and overlap by at least an inch. “After folding one side of the paper over, if you’re using doublesided tape you’ll then be able to place the tape along the outside edge of the paper, and fold the other side of the paper over the top and stick it down,” she says. To tape down the remaining paper at the top and bottom, start by gently pushing the paper down onto the gift (the side with the taped seam), then fold the two sides next to it down, trimming and tucking any stray edges until you have a neat triangle which you can press down. “Cylinders can be done in a similar way,” says Domican. “When wrapping awkward shapes, the best trick is to pop the gift into a box first, which you can then wrap, or buy a gift box and fill it with shredded tissue paper, or a nice gift bag. “If you do want to wrap the gifts, choose a busy, patterned paper rather than a plain one. The pattern will distort over the awkward edges and they’ll look better.” WRAP ESSENTIALS: Festive Snowflake gift bags, £5, Traidcraft (www. traidcraftshop.co.uk) Set of 3 gingerbread gift bags, £1, Poundland Snowflake gift box, £1, Wilkinson Cross stitch gift box, £6, John Lewis ‘Let is snow for Christmas’ gift bag, £3, John Lewis

SPECIAL TOUCHES Now for the fun part! Wrapping your gifts tidily is just part of the job - the finishing touches are what will make them look really special. Even a simple ribbon or bow will look effective - or you can get even more creative and add little extras. “To make presents extra special I put chocolates in little gift bags and attach them to the ribbon,” says Domican. “You can do the same with little trinkets, perhaps a little key-ring, just to add an extra, personal touch. Pretty baubles also work well - these will look good and form part of the gift.” Making your presents look special doesn’t have to cost the earth, either. “I used to collect pinecones from walks, and I’d glue a bit of glitter on them then attach them to my gifts as an added decoration,” says Domican. “It barely cost anything but looked very effective.” WRAP ESSENTIALS: Christmas ribbon (3m), £2.99, Orchard Cards (www.orchardcards.co.uk) Red polka dot ribbon (5m), £4.99, Drift Living (www.driftliving.co.uk) Assorted ribbons and trim, £1, Poundland Red pom pom string (2.5m) £4, John Lewis 30-pack

allergic to the bedroom While we sleep, these microscopic creatures absorb moisture from our breath and sweat, feed on our dead skin and thrive in our warm beds.” According to national charity Allergy UK the bedroom is the most allergic room in the house. 77% of those with an indoor allergy suffer in the bedroom, but 41% recognise their symptoms are actually made worse by that room. An indoor allergy is a reaction to house dust mites, mould or pets. Of those that are most affected by the bedroom, 92% are reacting to house dust mites, the most common trigger of indoor allergies. This comes as no surprise when you realise you never sleep alone.... the average person shares a bed with over two million house dust mites. With the research revealing that people are spending on average 52½ hours in the bedroom per week, the nation is literally sleeping with the enemy. Lindsey McManus, Deputy CEO, Allergy UK says: “House dust mites, like us, need food water and warmth. While we sleep, these microscopic creatures absorb moisture from our breath and sweat, feed on our dead 10

skin and thrive in our warm beds.” In the autumn and winter months, millions of people start snivelling and sneezing. Yet 72% of those questioned said they have cold-like symptoms throughout the year, which, may be indicative of an indoor allergy and perennial allergic rhinitis. House dust mites are regularly undetected; they live in soft furnishings and are often the cause of severe and persistent allergic symptoms all year round. They are the major trigger of indoor allergies, followed by pet dander and mould. And when it comes to pets, 71% of cat owners and 47% dog owners allow their pets to go anywhere in the home, meaning allergens are everywhere.

and have the window slightly open, ensure window frames are free from mould Choose an anti-allergy mattress and bedding or enclose the mattress, duvet and pillows with allergy barrier covers which prevent the escape of the house dust mite allergen 83% indoor allergy sufferers have curtains in their bedroom, which house dust mites love. Replace curtains with roller blinds, or wash curtains each month at temperature of 60 degrees or above Carpet harbours house dust mites, which 73% of indoor allergy sufferers have in their bedroom. Instead choose an Allergy UK approved flooring. If you need to keep your carpet, use a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filtration and vacuum daily Keep all children’s toys in a toy chest or cupboard and wash soft toys at 60 degrees, or put in the freezer overnight to destroy the allergen and then washed at a the recommended temperature

As well as causing standalone allergies, pet dander and mould also provide additional food for house dust mites.

For those suffering from an indoor allergy, follow the tips below to lessen your reaction and help rid your bedroom of allergens this winter: • House dust mites can’t stand light, so throw your covers and duvets back every morning • Keep the room well ventilated

• Using an air purifier in the bedroom can help to trap allergens. For more information visit http://www.allergyuk.org/

minutes with Monica Galetti

Monica Galetti is a sous chef at Michel Roux's London restaurant Le Gavroche, from which her expertise led to her clinching the judge's slot on MasterChef: The Professionals. She talks about the show, being one of TV's toughest-talking people, and why penning her first book, Monica's Kitchen, wasn't as easy as she thought it would be THIS WILL BE YOUR FOURTH SERIES OF MASTERCHEF - DO YOU STILL LOVE IT AS MUCH NOW AS WHEN YOU STARTED? Yes, you relax into it, because you get to know the crew a lot better. It's like a family, but what is great is that every year the standard seems to get much better. The chefs out there get more confident, putting themselves forward for the competition. WHAT SETS IT APART FROM OTHER TV COOKERY COMPETITIONS? It's real, there's no acting involved; we give it to them as it is. The tests are structured around things that actually go on in the kitchen. You know, even getting them to cook for critics is a very real part of becoming a chef in your own establishment. I love the fact that we're nurturing the future of the culinary world. But it's also the fact that people are learning from the programme. You're able to give to people, and they're thinking, 'Maybe I could try that at home'. Similarly with the contestants here - if they've not known how to do a certain skills test I've set for them, it might not be shown on the programme, but I will take them aside every time and show them where they went wrong, and how they can improve. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING THE TOUGH-TALKING, STERN-FACED JUDGE? Well, it's work, and I'm here to do a job. the reality of working in a high-end kitchen - the standards are high, you expect the best and when there is a problem, you deal with it. I think the criticism is telling them where they've gone wrong and, if anything, I'm disappointed when they don't step up to it because I'm expecting them to do very well. I don't want them to falter. DO YOU STILL LEARN THINGS YOURSELF WHILE FILMING MASTERCHEF? Yes, definitely. I love to see how the young chefs will put a unique twist on a classic dish, or if there's a new way to present a dish, or the way different ingredients have been used. I think it's very important

even now, and Michel will say the same, that you're still learning from the future generation. DID YOU ENJOY WRITING YOUR BOOK MONICA'S KITCHEN? Parts of it, yes! It's a book, and it's recreating my recipes, which is fine, but what I found difficult was simplifying what I do for the home cook. It was never intended as a book for the professional chef because I believe that a lot of it has been done by great chefs already, and I wondered what more could I add to that. So this one was something that was hatched from talking with friends who asked, 'Can you teach us how to do what you do?' But I still found it difficult because there are sayings you take for granted as a chef that needed further breaking down. However, it's the first book I've ever written and it's very personal to me. WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU GOT COMING UP? I'm championing the asparagus in the Great British Food Revival, which is on now. Then for January, I'm currently filming a few episodes for Michel's new cookery programme called Michel's Food And Wine. And I'm taking the family to Samoa over Christmas to introduce my daughter and husband to the island. I've not been back in 25 years so I'm going back to touch base with my roots. MasterChef: The Professionals is on Monday to Thursday each week on BBC Two. Monica's Kitchen is published by Quadrille, priced £20. Available now.

A Good Read Susanna by Robyn Shelby This is a gripping mystery and adventure story for young adults that intriguingly re-imagines Shakespeare’s life and work It’s the beginning of the summer holidays and Stratford-upon-Avon – famous as William Shakespeare’s home town – is burning under the blazing sun. Two children, Sue and John, have never paid much attention to the ‘Bard’ before, but then Sue hears a voice in her English lesson telling her to listen to some lines from The Tempest. She’s sure the voice is Shakespeare’s and that he’s trying to tell her something important. But what? And so the two friends embark on an exciting journey of discovery that takes them to all the famous Stratford landmarks where Shakespeare and his family were born and lived. As they go they are confronted with two more centuries-old puzzles, and come up against the mysterious man known as the Earl of Oxford.

A Case at Christmas by N. M. Scott This is a must of all Holmes fans, who will take huge pleasure in joining the world’s greatest detective as he embarks on solving A Case at Christmas and other tantalising mysteries. Sherlock Holmes makes a welcome return in this second collection of previously unpublished adventures from Doctor Watson’s case notes. Ranging across the illustrious detective’s long career, N. M. Scott presents ten new cases in which Holmes and Watson investigate hauntings, grave robberies, art theft and the seemingly inexplicable disappearance of a priceless violin. Even the great Sherlock Holmes

But are they just on a wild goose chase or are they on to something really, really extraordinary … something that could change how the world sees Shakespeare for ever? Doctor Watson however, is rather keener to furnish us with the facts…

The Never Lonely Planet by Martin Oliver Fed up of the daily routine of clocking in and out of his local factory, Martin Oliver joined the merchant navy before then moving to live in Brazil. So began a series of amazing experiences, travelling across continents and cultures, breathing in the rich history and absorbing the

ever-changing landscape, not without a few bar stops and beer on the way. From Brazil and Dubai to Cambodia and Thailand, Oliver delights in the golf, women and nightlife, shares his recollections of his time at sea and the oil exploration industry, explores untouched villages and is haunted by the remnants of atrocities committed the world over. And then there are the people; who would have thought you could find a Liverpool FC supporting tribesman in Eritrea? Whilst The Never Lonely Planet is both a travel book and an autobiography, its purpose is also to serve as an inspiration to the reader and to show them that the opportunity to travel is open to almost anyone if they would only take the initiative.

knee and it has gone from strength to strength. Of course, before you decide to sign up – check with your doctor in case sport exasperates any conditions you may have.

I thought I’d take a different approach. I’m going to give you a run-down (excuse the pun) of the things I enjoy doing and why and hopefully give you some inspiration to take up sport too.

I joined the ‘Back To Hockey’ sessions on a Monday night - a group of like minded women who have a laugh and enjoy the spirit of a team sport. Our practises have turned into league games on a Saturday for those in the team that would like to get involved.

My interest in sport started at a young age; I knew I wanted to be involved in sport as a career and went on to complete a Sport Science degree, then PGCE in Physical Education. I am now in my tenth year of teaching and still enjoy every minute of it. Although I love sport a couple of knee operations hindered my rise to Olympian standards (in my dreams!) and stopped me from playing contact sports, such as rugby, and impact sports like netball. Both my surgeon and physiotherapist offered advice on starting back to some sort of physical activity as I knew that as a lover of sport I would not be able to sit still for very long. Based on the advice given I decided to join the local Hockey Club. I’ve managed not to twist my 24

DITCH THOSE WINTER BLUES! As the seasons change, so can your mood. For some, the shorter days and longer nights trigger the “winter blues,” a form of depression called seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Jazzercise Founder and CEO Judi Sheppard Missett, recommends taking steps to keep your mood and motivation steady throughout the year. Are You SAD? There are several indicators including a sense of hopelessness, increased appetite with weight gain, oversleeping, loss of energy, inability to concentrate, loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed, sluggish movements, social withdrawal, unhappiness and irritability all point to SAD. Bask in the Light Light therapy is a standard treatment for seasonal affective disorder. It generally starts working in two to four days and causes few side effects. Light therapy mimics outdoor light, and can improve mood. Let the Outside In Make your home and office lighter and brighter by opening blinds, or add skylights. Get Outside Even on cloudy days, outdoor light helps, especially if you spend some time outside within two hours of getting up in the morning. Exercise Jazzercise customers know that physical exercise helps relieve stress and anxiety, both of which compound seasonal affective disorder. Spending time in class with friends can also make you feel better about yourself, which will lift your mood. It’s normal to have some days when you feel down, but if you believe you suffer from SAD, talk to your doctor. While symptoms will improve gradually with the change of seasons, they can improve even quicker with treatment. Talk about your feelings with someone you trust, and volunteer or participate in group activities. Jazzercise is a workout program which offers a fusion of jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, cardio box and Latin style movements, has positively affected millions of people worldwide. Benefits include increased cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility, as well as an overall “feel good” factor. Maintaining your health over the festive period and beyond You shouldn’t just diet in January, use these tips to keep you healthy all your round. Eat breakfast - Studies show that eating breakfast regularly promotes a steady body weight. Cutting out breakfast leads to blood sugar crashes and cravings for midmorning coffee and cake! Eat a nutritious breakfast such as sugar-free muesli, scrambled eggs or a nutritious high fibre shake to kick-start your metabolism and feel fuller for longer.

Include all food groups - You should include some healthy protein in every meal and snack such as fish, chicken, nuts, seeds, beans and lentils. Whilst the saturated fats found in cream, high fat cheese and meat can pile on the pounds and should be limited, make sure you do have a regular intake of the healthy omega 3 and 6 fats.

Limit sugary and refined foods White, refined carbohydrates such as white bread, white rice and white pasta raise blood sugar rapidly, causing a surge of insulin which takes the sugar out of the blood into the cells, and converts the excess into fat. Switch to wholegrain pasta, bread and rice which release sugar slowly, maintaining energy levels over a sustained period. Substitute xylitol for sugar. Xylitol is a natural sugarsubstitute with fewer calories than sugar and minimal impact on blood sugar. . Eat little and often - Eating smaller quantities at each meal and enjoying small healthy snacks between meals is one of the most effective ways to stabilise blood sugar.

A

Reduce stimulants - Like cigarettes and alcohol, tea and coffee have a significant effect on blood sugar, so reduce your caffeinated drinks and substitute with refreshing herbal teas such as peppermint, lemon or green-tea. Keep well-hydrated Eat slowly and chew thoroughly Root vegetables are in season and these add lots of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to your plate. Turkey is good protein source containing all the essential amino acids, in fact it’s a great source of tryptophan which we need to make the mood moderating neurotransmitter serotonin. Turkey also contains much less fat than goose or duck, so it is a good option for healthy eating. Try to avoid eating the skin.

January Blues The post-Christmas flab and impending credit card bill are the two things most likely to spoil your New Year. This is commonly known as the January Blues. For me it is even harder as I have a January birthday. I often find myself surrounded by friends on the wagon and on diets. Cheers – happy birthday to me and my solitary glass of wine. Why do we put ourselves through all the agony? We slim down to fit into a Christmas party dress and then eat our entire weight on a daily basis for at least ten days while the world comes to a grinding halt as we stagger around in party hats? When explored from that

28

ALONG THE THAMES

angle the whole festive season does seem rather odd. However, there is something reassuring about the routine of the traditions. Swapping secret Santa presents at yet another dinner, thinking you can sort the calories out in the New Year. Christmas should be a time for family and friends and if that means over indulging and enjoying yourself – why not? Especially if you have spent the whole time shopping and cooking and clearing up. So my advice is to go on a diet if you must. Or stop drinking if you want to. But at the end of the day wouldn’t it be much nicer to be consistently moderate throughout the whole

year? Surely overindulging for a month and then purging for a month straight after can’t be a good thing? Why not stick to just one glass of champagne at the office party? Or only one or two chocolates on Christmas day while you watch the Queen’s speech? Or go for a bracing walk on Boxing Day to work off those calories. And then you can enjoy the occasional glass and the odd night out in the New Year and fight those January blues. Have a wonderful and happy 2013. Vanessa Woolley

Pangaea Pilates WHAT IS FITNESS PILATES? Fitness Pilates is a modern, research based group fitness class created for the apparently healthy adult. It is neither remedial, clinical nor is it designed for rehabilitation. Fitness Pilates utilises all of the principals and includes many of the mat work exercises in traditional Pilates, but offers modifications, diversifications and updated exercise prescription to provide a controlled body conditioning program appropriate for the general public.

Louise has been teaching Fitness Pilates for over 5 years to a wide range of people in local venues and she is now bringing her Fitness Pilates classes to Marlow. Contact Louise at 07941 653569 or louise@pangaeatraining.com Quote from a Fitness Pilates Client: ‘It has shocked me how quickly FP can change your posture so quickly because I am holding myself and walking differently already.’

HOW DOES IT FIT IN WITH OTHER PILATES PROGRAMS? Fitness Pilates is a complimentary class aimed at all levels, ages and abilities. It is a general level incorporating basic Pilates techniques and exercises in a non intimidating and easy to follow way. Fitness Pilates is designed to sit alongside clinical Pilates sessions and small group classes whose aim is rehabilitation therefore becoming an excellent feeder class for members wanting a more specialised form of Pilates WHO IS FITNESS PILATES FOR? Sara Mayne TAI CHI Tai Chi is a slow, fluid sequence of movements that can be enjoyed by anyone of any age. By being open to the possibility of change, the slow meditative movements engender calm, strength, concentration, alertness and flexibility for your body and in turn the mind. We begin the journey into greater body and mind awareness and wellbeing. QI GONG Qi Gong is a style of exercise which supports health and vitality. It shares many of the principles of Tai Chi, however the forms (movement sequences) are concise, short and easily learned. This healing system originated in China and is designed

to promote youthfulness and a healthy longevity. It consists of short movement sequences that work with the body, mind and breath to bring balance to our energetic and physical system. Qi Gong movements tend to be slow and gentle and promote suppleness, stamina, strength and concentration. This practice facilitates the re-alignment of joints & muscles and so helps to relieve stress and tension be it physical or emotional. Many of us travel through life taking our bodies for granted. We begin to pay attention only when it stops working properly and often to a degree that prevents us from carrying out our daily activities comfortably and after the warning signs have been ignored. With Qi Gong and Tai Chi we have an opportunity to ease tension, stresses and discomfort. We can practice both at different levels depending on how we feel in ourselves. They are versatile forms of exercise. The process of pacticing Qi Gong and Tai Chi help us regain health and well being and then maintain it.. ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncture is a style of medicine which uses the concept of a map of pathways in the body called Meridians. The meridian network is akin to the network of blood vessels or the nervous system. Within these pathways, energy, or Qi, flows. Acupuncturists access specific points along the meridians using needles to effect positive change within this network. During an acupuncture session the practitioner will evaluate where and how to enable positive change or rebalancing within the meridian system. visit our website for more information www.saramayne.com Sara Mayne. Got the gear but no idea! I see a lot of runners out and about where I live. Every time I go out in the car I must pass at least six or seven in the space of a ten minute drive. The sight of each and every one of them annoys me. The more I see the more I roll my eyes and tut and voice my loathing of running and how mad they must be and “look at that nutter out in this weather.” But my real annoyance is not with not these people who are focused and motivated and enjoying exercising out in the fresh air, it is with myself and what is really making me feel uneasy is the fact that I do nothing, nudda, zilch. I would love to be one of those cool self-motivated, health conscious driven people who break their training only when they are injured or go on holiday. And even then they are racked with guilt at not keeping to their training schedule. I am not one of these people, I am a self-confessed couch potato, sofa surfer call it what you like. I am my gyms most favourite kind of member, one that pays and never goes. I have lost count the number of times I have kick started my health and fitness regime, but I am fairly certain that my husband has not lost count of the amount of money I have invested in the ‘essential equipment’ required for each new hair brained idea. You see I am also a fully fledged member

of the ‘got the gear but no idea’ gang. Heaven forbid that I turn up to a yoga class in anything less that the latest in Sweaty Betty clobber, or arrive at the pool in anything other than Speedo’s finest aqua suit with matching bag and racing goggles. Now that would be a sight to behold I can tell you! I think my husband should think himself lucky I have not embarked on sailing or horse riding, can you imagine how much a boat or a horse would cost?! Part of this of course is the motivation in itself. Having the new things makes you want to go as you have something new to wear. We have all been motivated to pay a visit to the gym as we have new trainers or a new top to wear right??? My latest adventure to try and get fit and lose a bit of Christmas weight involves Nordic Walking. Yes, walking with sticks before you ask and yes I am rolling my eyes at the next joker who stops and says “ha ha all we need now is a bit of snow!” I was introduced to it by a friend who asked me to go along with her. Keen to have a go I asked where I could buy all the ‘gear!’ She told me not to bother; just meet her in normal work out gear and my old walking boots and she would lend me her friends’ poles. I was a little disappointed that no shopping spree to Decathlon would be required just yet, but went

along anyway. I really enjoyed it, we walked, we talked, we climbed, we sweated buckets and it felt great. That was a few months ago…. (Good job I didn’t buy those poles huh?) I have started it up again more recently and have been to a good few sessions with an instructor who provides the poles. Now my original cunning plan was to get the gist of it and then get my own poles and do my own thing. That way I wouldn’t need to pay for an instructor all the time and more importantly I would most definitely need a trip to an expert walking outlet to purchase the essentials, poles, gloves, the right kind of walking shoes, hip pack, waterproofs…. However, in the short time I have been going I have realised that actually, what I am paying the instructor for is not really the poles but the continual checking of my posture, my technique and the drive and motivation and pace setting. The people I walk with vary in age and ability hugely and so does their attire. There is no particular trend to keep up with or set look, we wear what we need to in order to be comfortable and warm. I have been doing this for about a month now and I have none of the gear and I am getting the idea, so perhaps I have finally found something that may work for me…. And perhaps my bank balance! Hai-ya - Judo Ju-Jitsu Kai When I was recently asked to take part in a Judo Ju-jitsu Kai class, I can’t say I was too pleased – I really didn’t want to get kicked – I am a bit of a scaredy cat! I strolled up to the Marlow class on a Wednesday (although as an adult I could have gone to Maidenhead or Wycombe on various nights), I went a bit early to have a sneak peak at the Phoenix class (14-17). I was met by Sensei Holly Hudson - 3rd Dan Jujitsu, who explained the techniques, including weapon work (not real weapons), every move was focussed and the standard was really impressive – making me shake in my trainers even more for when my time came! The seniors seemed really confident in their skills, Holly said that the classes weren’t about violence but about learning a new skill which

can really improve confidence in the young ones (there are classes from 5years to adults), as well as hand/ eye coordination and cognition. As the mats cleared and the adults came on, it was my turn. After a warm up, where I was made to feel really welcome, Holly explained some moves and then were given the opportunity to try them. I managed to get a man down – I felt pretty elated, and after a few more moves although I wasn’t anywhere near the other members standard, I did think after a few more sessions I could be. It really is a sport that everyone should try – it works out a few muscles whilst also giving you a skill, and a means of escape if you do get attacked. All classes are available through the website http://www.parklodgejjk.

co.uk, once you get started you can work on your belts. The younger ones will get a syllabus book, which will help them train and give them a goal to reach – they will practice for their belt with others of their standard until they take their grade. Of course, adults will get the same grading opportunity, with the bonus of a visit to the pub after. Go on, give it a go! Homeopathy and your health It is with a heart filled with good intentions and a wonderful positive attitude that many of us are starting 2013. For some, a few modest New Year resolutions is enough. For others who succumb to sin more easily, an impressive list of Do’s and Don’ts is pinned all over the January month. The challenge, of course is to stick to those objectives. In my experience as a homeopath, what makes the difference is 1) how realistic we have been in the expectations we have of ourselves and 2) how we manage to maintain our positivity as time goes by. A fair share of homeopathic treatment focuses on being physically healthy, using remedies to stimulate the best possible response of the 32

ALONG THE THAMES

immune system. However, another side of being healthy involves keeping our mind clear and positive to get the best out of life. Whether it is embarking on a weight loss programme or deciding to do more exercise, a positive outlook is essential to keep our motivation high. This involves an everyday regime to keep at bay little stresses and the negative thoughts that bring us down. There is a wonderful range of homeopathic remedies to provide such support but a lot is to be said about simple relaxation techniques. I have come across some wonderful local alternative therapists who use hypnotherapy or yoga teachers who ease people into an “open heart state”. The impact that such exercises have on our physical health is not to be underestimated and the work

of the late David Servan-Schreiber MD is a great inspiration. We now have enough studies and medical research to back up the ancient idea that stress is detrimental to our health. Long term raised levels of cortisol, which is released at times of strain or anxiety, have a negative impact on our blood pressure, cardiovascular system, digestive system and have indeed an enormous impact of the so called “psychosomatic” conditions. Remedies such as Chamomilla for young mothers and babies, Kali Phosph for students or Passiflora can be discussed with your local homeopath if keeping positive is one of your New Year resolutions! Something for the weekend Missing the festive social scene or need to shift the Christmas excess? TIME TO JOIN A CLUB. January rolls in every year like a damp squib. The sparkle and fun of Christmas is packed away in its protective boxes and we’re left with the reckoning, short daylight hours, chilly weather and expanded waistlines. All those resolutions made with bonhomie at New Year - to get fit, lose weight, or try something new - already look a bit shaky. There’s nothing quite like moral support to help reach a goal, so don’t go it alone this year, join a club. FIND YOUR FEET Whatever your preferred speed on two legs - whether it’s power walking, jogging or running – putting yourself through your paces is the easiest and most affordable way to get fit. A running club will provide useful tips on technique, and steadily increase your speed and distance. It feels safer to pound the pavements in company and when a stitch strikes, there’s nothing like a bit of encouragement to reach the finish line. There are clubs aplenty in the area. Many have a social scene and a busy event calendar to focus

the mind, including charity walks, fun runs, 10ks and half marathons. See www.timeoutdoors.com GET ON YOUR BIKE Cycling has reached an Olympic high. It’s one of the best sports for improving health and fitness and can burn up to 600 calories an hour. Whether your preference is road cycling, mountain biking, speedway or BMX, our Chiltern Hills offer a scenic challenge for all. There are cycling clubs in the area to suit all levels. Cycling in a peloton encourages commitment and stamina. Clubs arrange events (Sportives), to challenge members and social nights so everyone can discuss the hardest climbs and the latest gear. To find your local club: www.britishcycling.org.uk

JOIN THE GYM Gym membership fees are often enough of an incentive to keep the commitment to go, but there are also enthusiastic fitness instructors and a host of luxury extras to entice you back through the doors. Gyms run classes as diverse as Yoga, Spinning and Body Conditioning. Personal trainers (for an extra fee) devise tailormade fitness programs and make sure you keep to them. Alternatively join the tennis, squash or badminton league or play as a team. The more expensive health clubs have a Spa and a café for members to relax and unwind. Health clubs host social evenings so members can meet and get to know each other. To find gyms and health clubs in your area: www.abouthealthclubs.co.uk SOMETHING DIFFERENT? www.sports-clubs.net lists hundreds of clubs as diverse as bowls, kayaking and open water swimming. So try a different strategy in 2013, join a club and make some new friends – friends who’ll cheer you on all the way to a healthier happier you. Kate Robinson ALONG THE THAMES

y earliest experiences of travelling to China were based on the backpacking/ shoestring budget model of sleeping on various floors and eating very interesting local delicacies that, to this day, I am not sure what they actually contained. Suffice to say the world has moved on and so has China. The remarkable changes which have taken place over the past 20 plus years in China are clear to see, yet the country remains vast and beautiful rewarding visitors with; world-class sites including the Terracotta Warriors and the Great Wall; stunning scenery such as the limestone peaks of Guilin and the majestic Yangtze River; as well as a diverse culture and exciting cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. If you are adventurous or like to book your own holidays the world famous Lonely Planet Guide may be all that you need to get yourself to and around China see www.lonelyplanetcom/asia . British Airways www. britishairways.com has flights to Beijing in March 2013 starting at £300.* Alternatively, until the end of March 2013 RT Holidays is running a special 10 night offer to visit Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong from £999 per person. luxury holidays to China www.coxandkings.co.uk , has highlighted the 'must see' top five places to visit. So dust off that bag, book a holiday and get packing!

Beijing Located in northern China, Beijing is the capital powerhouse of ancient history dating back over 3,000 years. This Far Eastern jewel is one of the great ancient capitals of China, so allow plenty of time to submerge yourself in this great city. A must see on any Beijing itinerary is the mighty Forbidden City. Situated in the heart of Beijing and built in the 15th century during the Ming Dynasty, the Forbidden City is one of the finest preserved imperial palaces in China. Stretched over 178 acres this UNESCO world heritage site features 90 palaces, courtyards, 980 buildings and 8,704 rooms. Marvel at the traditional architecture and imperial history before hotfooting it to Jingshan Park to see the panoramic view of the palace.

Xian Xian, the 'eternal city', is one of the oldest settlements in China. Here you can visit a 3,000 year old banpo village with archaeological remains dating back to the Neolithic Age. The Famen Temple holding the finger

bones of Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, is a great attraction for Buddhist enthusiasts. Or if you seek an archaeological site that packs a punch, head to the Terracotta Army. Over 2,000 years old, the life size terracotta figures features 8,000 warriors and 670 horses positioned in battle, representing the armies that belonged to China’s first Emperor Qin Shi Huang.

The Yangtze River The Yangtze River, the third longest river in the world, is almost 4,000 miles long and entwines through 11 provinces. From glistening glaciers of the Tibetan plateau down to the rush of Shanghai, embark on a cruise to see some of its exhaustive natural beauty. Drift through the three mighty gorges Qutang, Wu and Xiling for one of the best views of soaring mountains and staggering landscapes in this oriental paradise.

Guilin Limestone pinnacles and luscious vegetation are the hallmark of Guilin. Featuring two rivers and four lakes in the south of China, Guilin is a region of beautiful bamboo groves, crystal clear waters and captivating caves. Enjoy a boat trip on Li River and flow past

picturesque traditional fishing villages. Alternatively, head down below to the subterranean world of Reed Flute Cave. Over three miles in length, the cave allegedly dates back 500,000 years. Illuminated with eerie stalagmites and stone pillars, Reed Flute Cave will captivate even the most well-travelled tourist.

Yunnan Province Off-the-beaten track, in the pocket of south-west China lays Yunnan, the sixth largest province. Yunnan is the perfect destination for the explorer who wants to get under the skin of this mysterious country, looking beyond lanterns, chopsticks and Chinese dragons. Yunnan is a trekker’s paradise and one of China’s best kept secrets. Delve into tropical rainforests featuring over 2,500 varieties of flora and fauna and 30 endangered species including red pandas and snow leopards. Venture towards Lake Dian filled with charming fishing villages and farmland, or head to the mountainous north-west to view the Three Parallel Rivers National Park. This watery gateway is a UNESCO world heritage site and where Asia’s greatest rivers Yangtze, Mekong and Salween collide in a staggering geographical wonder. Harriet Subramanian ALONG THE THAMES

Transform your hair colour this season Celebrity stylist Daniel Galvin, says “When you have the perfect hair colour, the first thing other people should notice is not the hair colour but the eyes,” he explains. “The hair colour makes that possible. When you have the wrong hair colour, the first thing people notice is your hair.” Colour commitment Galvin’s finger painting technique can add depth and movement, minus the pesky root re-growth, while chalking is a temporary way to dabble with brighter shades for parties or special occasions. “Hair colour needs to be as lowmaintenance as possible,” Galvin advises, “but grey hair will need to be covered every four to six weeks. “Condition of the hair is also paramount. You can be a little more experimental with short hair as it’s less damaged.” Be wary of so-called home colour semipermanents. Galvin warns: “Use a ‘pure’ semi-permanent. Level 2 has peroxide in it, which means it’s a longer-lasting semi permanent but it alters the natural hair colour and doesn’t fade back.” Seasonal switchover Just like your wardrobe, changing your hair colour with the seasons can give you an instant boost. But that can be achieved with a new tone or technique rather than a full overhaul. “You can have ‘in’ cuts but the most fashionable colour is whatever suits the individual person.” If you’re unsure about which colour direction to take, the head of colour at Errol Douglas Salon, Jessica Speechly, recommends a ‘seasonal strand strategy’.

She says: “Wardrobe decisions can be virtually pointless if there’s no complementary hair plan in place to blend with and make your clothes ‘pop’ the year round.” For autumn, she suggests warming up your colour, looking to darker tonal additions: “Blondes go golden, brunettes hint at red, and all hair types are steered towards rich, glossy warmth.” Maintain mode Whether it’s a professional job or a bathroom sink DIY, hair colour requires extra upkeep to ensure it looks glossy and vibrant. “Immediately after having your colour done, wait a couple of days before shampooing to preserve the colour,” advises celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton. Invest in shampoos and conditioners for colour-treated hair that won’t ‘strip’ your new shade. “Protection and TLC are the secret weapons in keeping coloured hair looking great,” Barton says. “Commit to weekly conditioning masks to pamper and nourish the hair. Blonde hair doesn’t reflect shine as easily as darker hair so a quality hair care regime is essential.” Up the intensity of at-home treatments by using a plastic cap or warm towel to increase the temperature at which the product works. Between touch-ups, coloured dry shampoos are a great way to disguise tell-tale signs of root re-growth. By Lisa Haynes

Lifting the Lid on Tired Eyes

Y

ou can tell a lot about a person by looking at their eyes. They really are the windows to the soul. Unfortunately, the skin around the eyes is the first to show signs of ageing because it’s thinner and has fewer oil glands making it drier and more vulnerable to wrinkles and sun damage. As we age, our skin looses collagen, elastin and fibrillin, all of which play a huge part in the skin’s firmness and bounce. Once we lose these, fines lines form, and eventually, if left untreated, deeper lines appear. The skin around the eye area is on average three times thinner than facial skin and the thinnest on the entire body. Hence, it is more sensitive and fragile. The fact that our eyes express nearly every emotion and are in constant motion as they follow the m the movements of the underlying muscles also stresses the area. Combine the natural ageing process with the cold, dry weather and chances are, at this time of year, your eyes will look tired and winter-weary. Fortunately, a walk through any beauty department will prove there’s no shortage of eye products to treat them - according to research we spend over £65 m on them - but, alas, the majority won’t give you the results you’re looking for. The problem is that because the skin around the eyes is more delicate than that on the face some products - especially heavily loaded anti-ageing creams– can be too thick and irritating. Also, despite what they claim eye creams won’t get rid of suitcases under your eyes or completely banish black circles. However, a good product used regularly can smooth fine lines, boost hydration and tighten skin. So which ones are best?

BEST FOR FILLING IN FINE LINES Look for creams which are designed to fill light wrinkles and lines around the eyes temporarily. They typically contain hyaluronic acid, antioxidant vitamins and peptides to plump out fine lines. They’re good for a quick fix and will make lines look softer

www.clarins.co.uk

Look for Wrinkle relaxing peptides will smooth lines if you use them regularly as part of your beauty routine. Another trick to disguise fine lines is to apply a primer first. BEST FOR PUFFY EYES/BAGS Look for Creams/gels, which contain caffeine, work to narrow the delicate vessels around the eyes to discourage fluid from pooling, also peptide rich products will help strengthen skin. Eye masks are much more effective than creams or gels at getting rid of puffy eyes and a good rescue remedy after a heavy night.

Look for Ceramide helps maintain hydration and can tighten skin, but remember a little goes a long way as it can be over drying.

Look for Ingredients like Coenzyme Q10, retinol and peptides which will help skin cells to regenerate

On the hunt ... The shooting season is still going strong, although not everyone enjoys the hunt; clay pigeon shooting is for those who want to get competitive.

The CPSA regulates the standards of safety and competition at 450 affiliated and registered grounds around the country.

Clay pigeon shooting is the art of shooting at special flying targets, known as clay pigeons or clay targets, with a shotgun.

A shotgun is a smooth barrelled gun - with barrel length in excess of 60.96 cm (24 inches) and a barrel with a bore not exceeding 5.08cm (2 inches) - and either has no magazine, or a non detachable magazine incapable of holding more than two cartridges - and is not a revolver gun.

To own or possess a shotgun a shot

Waistcoats: the perfect gift for those who enjoy Clay pigeon shooting. Here is a sample of the stock we carry

Tupelo Waistcoat, Seeland

Clay pigeon shooting is currently enjoyed by everyone, from 9 to 90. It is a hobby that can be enjoyed with just a few friends on a very informal basis, in a more organised fashion at a local gun club or shooting school, or at competition level from registered CPSA events to County, Regional, National and International competitions including the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

For clay pigeon shooting at CPSA registered events and CPSA affiliated grounds, the maximum permitted bore of shotguns is 12, equivalent to 0.729 inches diameter. Barrel lengths typically vary from 26 to 32 inches, and side-by-side, under and over and single barrelled two shot semiautomatics are commonly used. Pump action guns are generally considered unsuitable for clay pigeon shooting.

Participants in the sport come from a wide variety of social backgrounds with a particular increase in the number of women and children coming into it, making clay pigeon shooting more and more a family orientated sport.

Weston Club Waistcoat, Seeland

The terminology commonly used by clay shooters often relates to times past, when live pigeon competitions were held; although such competitions were made illegal in 1921.

gun certificate is required, which will also require a police inspection of the storage security, usually a steel gun cabinet. Newcomers may borrow shotguns under supervision at many CPSA grounds offering coaching, without the need for a licence, under Section 11(6) of the Firearms Act 1968. This allows novices to fully participate before investing in guns and security.

Festive family fun with the National Trust at Cliveden Take time out from the hustle and bustle of a packed high street, and indulge in a day of traditional festivities at Cliveden near Maidenhead. Make the most of the winter by exploring frost-jewelled corners of the gardens or get in the Christmas spirit with a visit to Father Christmas.

The gardens at Cliveden are open every day from 10am until 4pm until 23 December. The whole estate is closed from 24 to 26 December, but reopens from 27 to 31 December, 10am to 4pm. Normal winter admission charges apply.

Begin your family’s Christmas celebrations with a visit to Father Christmas who’ll be visiting Cliveden every December Saturday and Sunday before Christmas. A special garden trail will lead you to Father Christmas’s grotto where the man himself will welcome children, receive ‘wish lists’ and distribute gifts (£4 per child).

Father Christmas Trail and visit: 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23 December, 10am – 3.30pm. Normal admission charges apply plus £4 per child for the trail and visit to Father Christmas (including gift). No booking required.

Cliveden’s gardens create a magnificent winter landscape, filled with unusual and rare objects to encounter, from bird-shaped topiary and Egyptian stone baboons, to the popular Storybook Play Den and Maze. For a more invigorating walk, head further afield through the woods and enjoy views into the valley and of the snaking River Thames below. After a leisurely stroll, you can treat yourself to a steaming cuppa with a cake or pastry in the Dovecote Coffee House which is open 7 days a week or at the weekends, pop into the Orangery Café to enjoy a hearty lunch. If you’ve got a little bit of shopping left to do, you’ll find gift ideas for all the family in the shop. To add a special something to your festive decorations this year buy some fresh holly or mistletoe cut from the estate or take home a locally grown Christmas tree. 46

Your questions answered by the experts at MyDaughter.co.uk, the first website dedicated to helping parents raise happy, fulfilled girls. Question: Can I help my daughter have a wider circle of friends? and My 5 year old finds it hard to form new friendships. She is very close to a particular girl in her school. However, that girl has a big group of friends and doesn’t spend as much time with her as my daughter would like. This is causing issues between the two and my daughter is feeling lonely and vulnerable. What can I do? Would changing school help? Answer: It’s important for young girls to have a wide social group. Help your daughter to make friends with others in her class by inviting them over to play, taking them to the park, asking them round for tea and so on. You might want to get to know some of the parents too. Don’t make asking about friendships the first thing you do when you collect her from school. At home, teach her to play games and have fun. Talk to her about how it’s good to play with different people, and that playing with one child doesn’t mean she’s no longer friends with another. Speak to your daughter’s class teacher and ask if your daughter plays with other girls. You may be reassures that she does. Encourage your daughter to explain how she feels to her teacher so the teacher can mediate. Friendships are an important part of girls’ lives and there may be more issues as she gets older. Changing schools at this stage won’t help as she needs to learn how to deal with the ups and downs of friendships. This month’s advice is given by Sarah-Jane Styles Francis Holland School (Sloane Square) and Hina Thaker Northwood College. Country Wise Winter feeding for Garden Birds December and January are the hardest months for our garden birds. Shorter days coupled with the possibility of a covering of snow or ice, makes the task of gathering food a difficult one.. More than at any other time of year, winter is the time when garden birds need your help the most. A free hand out of food is always welcome but at this time of year it can mean the difference between life and death. Most of the birds we see near our dwellings are former woodland birds. They now inhabit our man made woodlands in our parks and gardens. Most of the birds you are likely to see are the woodland species. Blue Tits and or Great Tits, Robins, Greenfinches and Chaffinches are most numerous, therefore most likely to visit for gifts of food. Most likely, but by it’s by no means a certainty. That’s what makes this such a fascinating pastime; it is that almost anything might drop in. We don’t put out food for Sparrow Hawks but one visits our garden quite regularly to pick up the odd Blue Tit snack. What about a Red Kite perhaps a bit to everyday or perhaps a Ring Necked Parakeet, both birds regularly visit gardens in our area. Getting started is easy. You can either spend a small fortune on state of the art birdfeeders and specially 52

ALONG THE THAMES

prepared seed from specialist suppliers. On the other hand you can scatter food on a dry bit of path or wood and use your kitchen leftovers, such as bruised fruit, cheese or baked potatoes, to entice in the birds. At first you won’t know what to feed or how but help is at hand. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and locally Berkshire Buckinghamshire and Oxford Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) have some great resources. As do the seed suppliers, most will give advice about what and where to feed. Once you are hooked, the other good investment is a Garden Bird guide. These come in a vast variety of shape, sizes and prices but all will help you get to know your visitors. Position you feed carefully, otherwise the local feline population end up having a bigger feast than the birds. Make sure your food is out early in the day. Birds that have survived a cold night are on the lookout for a quick energy top up. Stock the area again a while before dusk so they can feed up again for a long cold night. We would like to thank all the people who read our Country Wise articles and would like to wish everyone Seasons Greetings. Mark and Jacky Bloomfield

Charala Dieback - Charlara Fraxinea Chalara Fraxinea

responsible for ash dieback within the UK is a quarantine pathogen under national emergency measures; it is important to report any suspected cases to the relevant authorities. The disease caused by a fungus known as Chalara Fraxinea, causes premature leaf loss and crown dieback in ash trees which can ultimately lead to death in infected

trees. Ash trees suering with symptoms from Chalara Fraxina are increasingly being found across Europe and now have been confirmed at over 100 locations throughout the UK to include Wales and Scotland.

control presently consists of felling infected trees and burning on site. Infected debris and wood should not be moved and all tools and equipment used must be sterilized to further prevent spread.

Ash trees with withered tops and shoots are typical of infection. Other symptoms include twig and branch dieback and dark spots on the bark or leaves.

The local media have indicated the infestation has spread closer to home, as report of an infected Ash has been found near Maidenhead. It is a disease that affects European Ash (or Common Ash), Weeping European Ash, Narrow-leafed Ash, Manna Ash, Black As, Green Ash, White Ash and Manchurian Ash. This can be found in woodlands, parklands, ornamental

gardens and back gardens. The most common visible symptoms of a tree being infected are bleeding sores and cankers on the bark and discolouration of the underlying sapwood. If you have any concerns about your Ash trees, please give Calibra a call and we would be happy to come and have a look and offer some advice as to what the next course of action would be.

garden design

Coleby & Faulkner

On form for Winter.... During the winter months gardens are stripped back to their barest bones and a garden’s layout and structure really comes into its own. The lines of the hard landscaping, the permanent features, architectural plants, and hedges all have a role to play in providing a pleasing winter picture. Garden ornaments will seem more prominent in this winter landscape, a simple well-placed urn or obelisk can also catch the eye and punctuate the space. Leaving herbaceous plants and grasses standing with their seed-heads gives a softer more natural look and gives a birds a treat during the lean winter days. Clipped evergreen plants can provide bold statements ... columns, cones or spheres using traditional box or yew takes some beating.

True Costs of Transport for SME’s

Bottom line costs are critical for small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) and with budget planning on the doorstep for 2013, Along the Thames will feature a series of articles on trends, tips and information aimed to help SMEs stay on top in 2013.

year. With 91 per cent of SME decision makers surveyed saying that their business requires a form of transport within working hours, it is clear that transport remains a fundamental part of doing business for SMEs and cannot be ignored.

The first in the series looks at the true costs of transport and wastage to SMEs and just how many business decision makers are aware of these costs, as well as the potential savings that could be made by adopting a flexible model. New research published by Zipcar, the UK’s largest pay-as-you-drive car network, reveals that company owned vehicles sit idle for a staggering two thirds (63%)1 of business hours per week.

However, company owned vehicles often sit idle for the majority of the working week, and almost a third of businesses (29%) estimate that the majority2 of their transport costs are generated from company owned vehicles - there are clear savings to be made.

With a focus on bottom line costs critical for survival within the current climate, Zipcar’s research, carried out with YouGov, shows that 17% of business decision makers are completely unaware of total annual company costs spent on transportation. This important expense line frequently lacks visibility and this means that costs can escalate rapidly. The research suggests that transport is an area where costs could be significantly reduced by moving towards more flexible, cost-per-use models. The research explored the most popular modes of transport and how much these cost SMEs each 56

Fairfax Hall, Co-Founder Sipsmith Independent Spirits, comments “Zipcar for Business has enabled us to make 20% savings in comparison to owning our own vans. As our business has grown, Zipcar has grown with us, allowing us to easily and efficiently expand to making more deliveries to more customers, more often. Rather than purchasing a fleet of vehicles, using Zipcar allows us to reinvest every last penny of our capital back into the business to drive growth, confident in the knowledge there will always be a vehicle road-worthy and on demand to service our customers.” The research also highlighted the top three key considerations for SMEs when weighing up the transportation needs of their business, with convenience proving more

important to small business. The top three considerations are: Convenience (71%) Overall cost (68%) Flexibility (56%) A third of SME respondents said that their business is operating with no transport policy in place at all. Andrew Edgar, Head of Zipcar for Business UK, Zipcar, said, “Managing transport costs can become complicated for SME businesses, which often need to scale up or scale down quickly, based on fluctuating demand. It’s not surprising to find that money is being wasted and transport costs are not being managed as effectively as they could. “Our aim is to educate businesses on the alternative to ownership and leasing. By joining a pay-as-youdrive car network, businesses can make use of over a dozen vehicle makes and models on a pay-per-use basis – be it an Audi for an important client meeting, or a Transporter van to make deliveries, both the hassle and the time of managing transport and the associated costs can quickly be removed.” For more information on Zipcar visit www.zipcar.co.uk/business. Harriet Subramanian 1 All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 506 SME decision makers. Fieldwork was undertaken between 24th-27thSeptember 2012. The survey was carried out online. 1This was calculated as the median (50% of respondents) of ‘What % of the working week is your company owned car used for’ fell within the more than 10, up to 15 bracket. Based on the average working week of 40 hours, the average unutilised time was found to be 63% 2 91-100% of their transport costs

a new year - a new you amazed at how much free adult learning is available to us (the BBC have quite a range of options available online), and there are many other options from the National Careers Service, where you can enrol for a Lifelong Learning Account and access their Action Plan and other tools.

A

New Year will dawn soon, and it is time to think about our New Year Resolutions.

Along with the usual suspects (losing weight, going to the gym regularly, cutting back on our excesses and the rest), how about considering something different this year? Could you think about investing in you and your learning? You would be

about being sat behind a desk at school being taught “stuff”, and it certainly is not just about books. Learning provides opportunities to discover new skills and to acquire knowledge; it helps us to learn more about ourselves. It can help keep our faculties sharp; exercising the brain. So here are five top tips for getting the most out of your learning:

It is interesting to me when I work with people to be the best they want to be, so often the things they think are holding them back are giving them positive side effects that they are unaware of. I once worked with someone who was desperate to give up smoking. By not doing so, she was getting a positive side effect of spending short but quality time with her boss during their smoking breaks. Having identified that this was an important positive side effect for her, we worked on other ways of getting quality time with her boss that did not involve cigarette - she was able to give up smoking two months later.

 Pick the right form of learning for you. Whether attending a class, reading a book, surfing the web, or getting hands-on.

What are the other benefits of learning? As adults, we get to choose what we want to learn and the skills we want to develop. It is no longer

Be bold in your Resolution, and good luck!

 Be adventurous; try different things.  Remember you are learning. Something may not go quite right the first time you try it. This is okay; learn from what didn’t work and try again in a different way.  Enjoy the here and now of learning and let the end goal be secondary.  Don’t be afraid of change and the opportunity to do things differently.

Mediation or Litigation? Did you know that more couples break up in January than any other month in the year? This means that for many couples the beginning of the year is a make or break time for their relationship. Traditionally divorcing couples would have engaged a lawyer each and let the lawyers fight over the details, which is a costly and time consuming process. This often left couples angry and bitter towards each other which inevitably had a negative impact on any children from the marriage. There is an alternative. Over the last 20 years family mediation has become a more easily accessible process and recognised buy all concerned as a helpful way to start: although saying that mediation can be sought at any point in the legal process of divorce, however increasingly couples are being asked to seek mediation before going down the litigation route. In the legal aid system it is a requirement

that couples try it out first. From this one might assume that mediators and lawyers might be in conflict over business: not so. Lawyers generally value the mediation process and are now required to recommend, to their clients, trying it first. The relationship between most lawyers and mediators is a co operative one working together to ensure that reasonable fair agreements are made between the two parties that can be ratified by the court. Many family lawyers are also trained mediators, although they cannot be both for the same client.

who can become embroiled in the conflict. The benefits of family mediated agreements are that they evolve from a focussed discussion and negotiation where the mediator can ensure that everyone gets heard and couples and children can feel that they are allowed to love both their parents. In addition mediated agreements can be remediated or changed as circumstances change. It is important to remember that everyone is different and experience things differently so what is helpful for one person may not be for the next.

The ways in which mediation can help seems to be mainly through the couple themselves being responsible for making the decisions that form the agreement. Having a facilitated discussion enables couples to keep the lines of communication open

The court process can often feel a bit like a blunt instrument delivering a decision that possibly no one is happy with, whereas the mediation process can feel more user friendly with trained professionals that want to help the people involved come to a workable agreement that they can live with.

sufficiently for them to come to agreement on issues that can be highly emotive, which is crucial when there are children involved,

Marlow Rewards loyalty programme At a time when businesses and consumers alike are feeling the squeeze, Marlow Town Council are focused on ensuring that the Marlow businesses thrive and the town remains the vibrant place it is. As an incentive to get residents and workers to shop in the town, the Council have supported the launch of Marlow’s own loyalty programme, Marlow Rewards. Businesses in Marlow are being invited to join the shopping loyalty programme to give people the opportunity to save money every time they shop in participating businesses. This unique programme adds to a community fund every time a card is bought and then allows cardholders to access special offers and incentives when shopping in Marlow Rewards retailers as well as over 200 national brands. We think it is important to reward people who choose to support local retailers, and help to keep the much loved High Street and community as vibrant as it always has been. Marlow Rewards cards can be purchased from participating retailers, the Information Centre or on- line at www.marlowrewards.co.uk – For every card sold some of the money goes back to Marlow to help support Marlow projects; this is most important as funding cuts have had a huge effect on getting investment in our town. That’s not all, in addition to on-going savings throughout the year, the Marlow Rewards card comes with over £100 of instant money saving vouchers that can be used in and around Marlow. So we believe having Marlow Rewards in the town is a win for shoppers, local business and the community. So join in with Marlow Rewards today and save yourself ££££’s all year round, help support your local high street and the community.

Keep your pets safe this Christmas

Christmas is a time for celebrating, having fun and spoiling our loved ones – including our pets! However it is important to remember that cats, dogs and other pets should not be treated, or fed, any differently during the festive season. Here are Companion Care Vets’ top tips to ensure you and your pets have a safe and happy festive season. • Always keep food well out of reach of your pets! Did you know that chocolate poisoning is a problem for cats and dogs and is one of the most commonly encountered poisonings in pet dogs. • Don’t be tempted to give your dog bones from your Christmas turkey – they present a choking hazard and

can be very sharp • When decorating your home, be mindful of potential dangers to your pets –ornaments, tinsel, Christmas trees and cards can all be broken, swallowed, knocked over and chewed • Planning a party? A house full of people can be daunting to a pet so prepare a quiet area away from the hustle and bustle where he or she can settle and be kept away from food and drinks that will no doubt be adorning every spare surface of your home!

Baby it’s cold outside….. While it is important to brave the elements and keep your dog exercised during cold weather please take care in what can often be hazardous conditions…….. • Stay off of frozen ponds, lakes or swimming pools – it is wise to keep your dog on his lead to prevent them wandering onto ice. • Coats can be useful to help small and thin coated breeds of dogs stay warm. • When you get home, wipe snow and ice off your dog’s feet, legs and belly. Remove the ice carefully and check for cuts. Wiping off your dog will remove any salt, antifreeze or other harmful chemicals that he could 62

ingest when licking her paws. • More dogs are reported lost during the winter than any other season, so keep them close by and within sight on walks. • Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car for prolonged periods during cold weather as temperatures plummet, your car becomes like a fridge. • Provide your pet with a warm place to sleep, away from draughts and off the floor. • Screen fireplaces and put portable heaters out of pets’ reach. Do not run portable heaters when you are not there to monitor them!

Policing Matters Intelligence thinking We are very fortunate in this country that we police with the consent of the public who are by and large very supportive of us. It is well recognised that the police cannot do things by ourselves and I have often been heard to say that I want you to help us to help you. I am not asking for the general public to put on a uniform and go out on patrol for me although that is exactly what the members of the Special Constabulary do, keeping your communities safe. No what I want from you is intelligence. Information and intelligence is the lifeblood of crime investigation and in Thames Valley most of what we do is intelligence led. My colleagues in Avon and Somerset police recently conducted an experiment by stealing pedal cycles in front of the public to test their reaction. Not one person called the police. One member of the public was even asked to hold the chain while the “criminal” cut it off. Are the public so disinterested or is it that they accept suspicious activity as normal. If it looks suspicious to you then let me know about it. A simple description or even a number plate has often led to the solving of crime. If you think that a crime is occurring at the time then call 999. If it is just something that you think is suspicious then you can phone us on the non emergency number 101. If you are worried about giving your details then you can call Crime Stoppers anonymously.
