It is amazing how time flies between magazines and here we are at our Christmas/New Year issue. It seems like only yesterday that the morning TV shows were talking about three months to Christmas and now it is just around the corner!! As ever we have a jam packed issue filled with all sorts of articles such as dream toys for this Christmas that no doubt most of the children already have on their Christmas list as well as a few gadgets for the Chef in your life. Thinking of what do this Christmas or New Year? If so, then take a look at the many special events being offered by some of our local advertisers in this issue. Hopefully you might have the excuse to dust off that sparkly outfit, let down your hair and be prepared to party the night away over this coming festive season.. If so, then make sure you take more than a quick peep at our fashion feature which is helping with some suggestions on how to dress for the Christmas period, What about looking to get away this holiday season and not sure where to go? We have a great article featured in this issue on some different ideas on where to stay and what to do in the UK’s most south western county of Cornwall over New Year, certainly something to think about. As Winter sets in and the days become darker and colder, most of us start to notice a change in our skin condition as we move from the welcome warmth of our homes to the chilly blast that greets us as we step outside. So to make sure we all help our skin survive these ever changing weather patterns then make sure you then look no further than the products featured for hydrating the face, body and hair. Many of the products included in our articles are available for you to try, so please get in touch and we will enter you in to our draw to win some of these and for you to experience the difference they might make. Good Luck. All there is left for me to do is to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year and see you in March.

Dream Toys for Christmas

S

canning the top 50 list of toys expected to be best-sellers this Christmas, there’s a few familiar names, like Lego and Monopoly. On closer inspection though, while the brands and concepts might be the same, these toys are not replicas of the ones we played as kids. Things have changed, rather a lot, and toys are a little more hi-tech nowadays. “Everything has evolved,” says Gary Grant, chair of the Dream Toys committee which compiles the list. Nothing on this list is exactly the same as it was years ago, when you or I were young. “Yes, Lego’s on there, but it’s not the same Lego we played with. Back then, the developments we saw were things like window panes and roofing panels - now things are far more advanced.” As for Monopoly, with this year’s Monopoly Empire, gone are the dog, old boot and top hat. Kids can now play with a Coke bottle, Xbox controller and carton of fries, as they battle it out to buy and sell modern multinational brands like Apple, McDonalds and Samsung, rather than hotels in Mayfair. It’s a very thorough process. It starts with the Toy Retailers Association calling in lists drawn up by various toy retailers, indicating which items they think will do well this year. Once all that is merged, the Dream Toys committee, an independent panel representing 80% of toy retailers, including Hamleys, Argos and Toys R Us, assess each suggestion, and compose the final lists. “It takes a whole day with a room full of people, thrashing out the pros and cons of each item against another,” explains Grant. “The only criteria of the Top 50 is that it’s representative across all sections of the industry. So it wouldn’t be a whole list of crafts, a whole list of games or a whole list of dolls.” So first, the committee decides on the

6

LIVING ALONG THE THAMES

top selections in six different categories the ‘Let’s Get Busy’ toys which promote creativity, the ‘Playground Banter’ bunch (the ones that’ll be the talk of the school), the tech based toys, the ‘The Name’s the Game’ - toys linked to movie and gaming characters, or pop stars (One Direction dolls made the cut), the ‘Granny Knows Best’ which covers new takes on old favourites, and the £25 and under category. Finally, from these six groups, the Top Ten list is then compiled. (Though there are actually 11 things on the list this year, because the panel couldn’t decide between Leapfrog’s LeapPad Ultra (RRP £119.99) and VTech’s InnoTab 3S (RRP £99.99), so they put them both on.) Tech clearly rules this year, and it’s incredible to see how much things have developed in only a short space of time. “Kids expect more from their toys these days - their brains have evolved and things are far more complex now,” says Grant. “Technology is kids’ daily diet now. It doesn’t freak them out like it might an older person - it’s just what they’re used to.” Talking of ‘freaking out’ - the ‘£25 and under’ category is good news to families on a budget. Four items on the overall Top Ten list cost under £25 and, on average, the must-have toys are £10 cheaper than last year. “And bear in mind that these are the beacon items on a child’s wish-list,” adds Grant. “We’re not looking at stocking fillers - these are the top ‘main’ presents.” Once again, the list has created a buzz in the media, which comes as no surprise to the industry experts. “Toys aren’t frivolous things,” says Grant. “They’re not just something to keep kids amused. Yes, they’re playing [with toys], but they’re learning so much at the same time - they can go off into a dream world where they’re using their creativity and imagination and figuring things out as they go.”

So should parents be rushing out to buy all items from the list? Not necessarily. “The list is only a prediction,” Grant explains. “We don’t know yet which toys will actually end up selling out, but we are pretty accurate; over the last 15 years we’ve been doing this, we usually get about eight out of 10 predictions right. Grant advises taking time and thinking carefully about what to pick off the shelves, and for this reason he recommends going to a toy shop, rather than buying online. “If you go into a toy department, you’ll be greeted by somebody who knows their stuff, knows the market, and can advise on age-group suitability and what might be suitable for your child.”

Thank you letters or ‘ty’ texts? Do your children send thank you letters or thank you texts after Christmas? Do you worry that they no longer seem to give attention to neat handwriting and accuracy of punctuation, spelling and grammar in their day-to-day communication? It can be worrying that today’s children use text, email, instant messaging and Facebook to communicate. Handwriting seems almost irrelevant while punctuation, spelling and grammar appear to be used more to convey sense than because rules must be obeyed. Nevertheless, young people ARE still taught the rules. They do learn the importance of following them in certain contexts such as GCSE coursework, in an examination, writing formal reports and so on. The skills are still there but, in everyday contact with each other, shortcuts apply. We need to be mindful that the world our teenagers inhabit has changed significantly. The future we are preparing them for is not the same as the one in which we grew up. Many of the skills they will need are different to those with which we’re familiar. Texting at speed and making yourself understood is a skill of its own. Don’t worry too much when your children use these new skills – as long as their style of communication is appropriate to the medium, they will be fine. Westmount Music

I

t has been a whole year since we last featured Westmount Music in Marlow Bottom, so we thought we would pay them a visit to see how 2013 has been and their plans for the festive season and beyond. We found shop owner Paul amongst a pile of keyboard boxes, ukuleles and other musical paraphernalia, “excuse the mess!” he exclaimed as he appeared from the rubble with a grin, “I hope this time next year we’ll be in a bigger shop!”. Westmount Music opened it’s doors 3 years ago in the midst of Recession and when many people thought they were mad, he explained at the time that if they could survive it, then the future could only be brighter on the other side. Paul continues, “It’s been a journey since we opened, but thankfully we have come through the tough economic times relatively unscathed, largely thanks to great local support and a diverse business plan” As well as several new lines and brands being added to the range of musical instruments and accessories, the shop has developed a very well established tutoring service, instrument rental and PA hire service and a Loyalty Clubcard program which rewards shoppers and local schools for their

patronage, “We have tried to grow everything as organically as possible and have developed a range of services and incentives which has really underpinned the business. We are also delighted to announce that we can now offer 0% finance to our customers to make it even easier to shop and spread payments, especially on the higher ticket items” Judging by the number of boxes in the shop, it looks as though they have already enjoyed a busy festive season after a brief respite to host their Open Day a couple of weeks ago, “We tend to plan earlier each year, but even so its still very tricky to predict shopping patterns and preferences on products”. Paul continues to explain that they have brought in a larger range of all of the lines in order to cope with demand, both locally and online, “We are hoping that with our very competitive pricing, 0% finance offering and our value added service, we will have a successful festive period and bring some musical joy to Christmas Day!” So if you want to beat Santa to the latest musical gifts, give Westmount Music a visit, in store or online at www.westmount-music.co.uk.

The Quince Tree’s Head Chef Peter Eaton shares one of his warming winter recipes… Venison Casserole with braised red cabbage Peter has chosen this dish as venison is at it’s best this time of year. Cranberries & red cabbage are also in abundance and these festive ingredients complement the rich meat perfectly. This dish is packed full of flavour but is not too heavy – a real winter crowd pleaser. It’s simple to make and here’s how you can try it at home... For the marinade: Ingredients 500ml dry red wine Juice of 1 lemon 2 large bay leaves 2 whole cloves 16 baby onions peeled & whole 3 carrots, peeled and chopped 100g button mushrooms halved 1 large garlic clove, peeled and crushed 6 whole black peppercorns, crushed 1 juniper berry, crushed 250ml vegetable oil For the stew: 500g lean venison cut into 1-inch cubes 100g unsalted butter 50ml gin Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste 100ml cabernet sauvignon vinegar 500ml brown chicken stock

Method: 1. Combine the marinade ingredients in a large glass bowl and stir well 2. Add the Venison, cover and then refrigerate for one day. Turn meat once or twice during this time 3. Remove meat & vegetables from the marinade and dry thoroughly. Keep the marinade aside for the casserole 4. Heat some oil in a heavy duty pan and add the meat. Let it colour and add ½ the butter. When golden, deglaze with ½ the marinade and bring to the boil then place into casserole dish 5. Repeat the same process with the vegetables 6. Now add all the vegetables & marinade to the casserole dish and top up with the stock just to cover. Season well 7. Cover & cook at 90 degrees

for approx. 6 hours For the braised red cabbage: Ingredients 1 red onion, sliced & caramelised in duck fat 250g shredded red cabbage 1 bouquet garni 50ml red wine vinegar 1 cinnamon stick 500ml litre red wine 100ml cassis 2 tablespoon redcurrant jelly 30g brown sugar 50g duck fat Salt & pepper Method: 1. Mix all ingredients and cook in a 150 degrees oven with a cartouche for 1-1 ½ hours 2. Remove & allow to cool 3. Once cooled, drain the liquid into a pan & reduce to a glaze for coating later 4. When required, place cabbage & glaze in a pan on a low heat and warm gently, as this may burn or catch easily Serve with rich creamy mash & good quality cranberry sauce. Delicious… perfect for any cold winters evening!

Classic Thai Fish Cakes and Cucumber Salad serves 4 - 6

Makes 10 - 12 Fish cakes

INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

400g white fish fillets. 1Teaspoon sea salt For the mixture. 5 Kaffir lime leaves 4 Tablespoons coconut milk 2 Tablespoons fish sauce 1 Teaspoon shrimp paste. 1 medium sized red chilli diced Half red pepper/ pimento finely chopped 2 Teaspoons garlic powder 1 Teaspoon coriander powder Teaspoon course ground black pepper 1 Teaspoon brown sugar 3 Spring onions sliced 2 Tablespoons fresh chopped coriander 1 Stalk lemon grass tender part only chopped Small cube of galangal or fresh root ginger grated • Juice of 1 lime • 1 whole egg • 100 g breadcrumbs (2 standard sized bread slices)

FOR THE CUCUMBER SALAD • • • • • • • •

2 Cucumbers peeled , deseeded and sliced 1 Large spring onion finely diced 1 Tablespoon caster sugar 50ml Rice vinegar 2 Chillies finely diced 2 Tablespoon of chopped coriander 1 Tablespoon light soy sauce 40g Chopped roasted peanuts

These fish cakes are a very popular street food in Thailand, and have a greatly enhanced flavour compared to some of the ‘Western’ offerings. They are best eaten a few minutes after frying, and are often accompanied with a Thai sweet chilli sauce, chopped cucumber salad, fresh coriander, and a squirt of fresh lime juice.

METHOD: 1. Rinse fish thoroughly and cut into small chunks, and place in a food processor. Add a little sea salt. 2. In a bowl combine the listed ingredients, and stir to create a thick paste. Add the breadcrumbs last. Blend in processor with the fish. 3. Pour mixture into a bowl, and chill in fridge for two hours. Remove from fridge when ready and with the hands pick up a small amount of mixture about the size of a golf ball, and pat the past into a small cake, and repeat until mixture is used up . Place on a lightly floured plate, and chill in fridge until ready to use. 4. In the meantime prepare the cucumber salad. Dissolve the sugar light soy and vinegar and cut the cucumber into 5mm slices, and fold in the chilli, sugar shallot and coriander. 5. Sprinkle with the peanuts just before serving - optional 6. Remove fish cakes from the fridge , place in a frying basket ,and deep fry for 5 minutes. Remove from fryer and place on rack to cool a little. Serve garnished with coriander leaves, and serve with the cucumber salad and a sweet Thai dipping sauce.

‘Whenever Wherever Dining Menu’ at Oakley Court

S

omething light, something to share, perhaps a salad, pizza, sandwich or main course? The Oakley Court Hotel is offering a relaxed dining concept with something to suit everyone’s taste, including the little one’s with their own ‘Our Younger Guests’ menu. The menu ensures there is something to match any appetite at any time of the day, with options available for lunch, snacks and dinner. The ‘Whenever Wherever Dining Menu’ at Oakley Court can be enjoyed in the Opulent Drawing Room, The Bar, the Conservatory, the Library and Al Fresco on the Terrace in the Summer, with each room offering a differing atmosphere and surroundings - both the Drawing Room and Bar have roaring log fires, particularly welcome on these long cold winter nights. Living Along the Thames recently experienced the ‘Whenever Wherever Dining Menu’ and thoroughly enjoyed several dishes from the menu in the beautiful surroundings of the Drawing Room within Oakley Court. With so much choice and different concepts to choose from it was difficult to decide which dishes to enjoy over dinner. For starters we settled on a small salad of Marinated chickpea and feta with pumpkin seeds and couscous along with a small portion of the Salt and Pepper squid. The salad was extremely refreshing and the squid was wonderfully cooked with a light batter and soft texture. Both theses dishes could have also been served as larger portions if we had wanted

14

LIVING ALONG THE THAMES

them as a main course or had felt hungrier. Our main courses again featured two very different dishes from the menu with a wonderfully rich Cottage pie with Guinness and glazed vegetables along with a light Parmesan potato gnocchi with oven roasted tomatoes which can also be served as a smaller dish as required. Oh, and we couldn’t fail to order the extremely crispy Triple cooked chips as one of the many side dishes on offer. As much as we would have loved to try one of the desserts we just didn’t have any room left for an Ultimate “Rocky Horror” meant for sharing or a Sweet fondue – hopefully next time. As well as the dining menu there are also special cocktails being offered by the bar to suit the mood of the evening and weather. A recent special was The Ginger Bread champagne cocktail giving a lovely seasonal twist to a glass of champagne. The hotel sits on a beautiful spot on the banks of the Thames between Maidenhead and Windsor. The grounds are lovingly maintained and feature some stunning older and more modern driftwood sculptures that are well worth a visit to see. Over the Christmas season a wonderfully bright red nosed Rudolf sits in the drive way looking over all the hotel guests but come Christmas eve he may have some other work he needs to do! SOUPED UP Cuisinart Soup Maker - £140 from cuisinart.co.uk It’s the perfect time of year for some home-made soup and this ingenious machine is all you need to serve up some delicious varieties. WEIGHED IN Joseph Joseph Foldable TriScale - £30 from johnlewis.com Kitchen scales are frequently needed but often consigned to a dark cupboard because of their ungainly and bulky appearance. A model of good health! Discover why model, actress and TV presenter Linda Lusardi is feeling better than ever!

B

est known for her work as a model in the 80’s and 90’s and more recently as an actress and presenter on stage, film and television, Linda Lusardi - wife to actor Sam Kane and a mother of two teenage children - has never looked or felt better and is no stranger to the challenge of juggling family and career. Linda's career started at the age of 17 when she became one of Britain's top models but her career has been as much about being an actress as it has a model. Soap lovers will remember her as the ex-girlfriend of Tom King on the cast of Emmerdale in 2007 or for her role in The Bill as detective Don Beech's estranged girlfriend Maggie Lyons. Her television career has also included presenting roles on Wish You Were Here, as host of a late night chat show on ITV called It's Bizarre or as a presenter of her own fitness slot on GMTV. Not limiting her roles to television, Linda has also walked the boards in many major theatres over the years, most notably as Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion and Shirley in Funny Peculiar while her film credits include Snappers with Joss Stone and Olympus Force where she starred opposite Christopher Lee. Living in the spotlight means Linda is scrupulous about keeping fit and well. She exercises regularly and is careful about what she eats in order to maintain her diminutive, 5ft 4in figure. Her commitment has certainly paid off. Now, aged 54, she looks as fabulous as ever. But it hasn't always been this easy.

When I was a model I used to indulge in junk food and fad diets, but those days are gone

Linda explained, "I wanted natural help for my dry eyes, which have plagued me for about 10 years. I was tired of using drops and feeling uncomfortable. I found out that other people with my problem use sea buckthorn oil to provide moisture from the inside." "I took two capsules in the morning and two at night and I started to see an improvement in a fortnight. After a few more weeks I was able to stop using my eye drops. I know that you can't get all the nutrition you need just from food, but I love how these hardy little berries are carefully harvested just like in ancient times, then gently processed to keep the oil pure.” "It's no exaggeration to say it has been life-changing for me. Sea buckthorn benefits so many other areas of the body that it is now a must in my daily routine. I choose the original Omega 7 Sea Buckthorn Oil capsules because they're researched and made to such high standards. I know my health is in good hands."

Despite taking control of her diet and fitness, Linda struggled with a common problem that made her life difficult for over ten years. Dry eyes. This affliction affects up to one in ten people in the UK and is caused by a variety of factors.

The popularity of sea buckthorn oil continues to grow, but Linda and a growing number of supporters (doctors, practitioners, menopause experts and pharmacists) hope to raise further awareness of this natural substance, that could provide a helping hand to thousands of people just like her.

"My eyes felt dry and gritty most days, and also they would become red and sore. It would flare up when I was under artificial lighting, in air conditioned rooms or when I wore false eyelashes. It also seemed to worsen after I had my two children. I was forced to use eye drops every single morning. If I ever forgot my drops, my eyes would be terrible all day and people would think I'd been crying!

"With the TV and photographic work I do, it's important that my eyes look clear and healthy. Omega 7 has helped me achieve that. And, I am told, it is a "gift from nature" for middle-aged women.

Precious Cells in association with La Perla Clinic ‘Precious Tooth’ is a service that lets you preserve the stem cells in you or your children’s teeth. Dental stem cells are found in any healthy tooth: baby teeth that are naturally falling out, wisdom teeth being extracted, teeth being pulled to make room for braces or for other orthodontic reasons Instead of having your dentist throw away this incredible valuable source of your own stem cells, you now have the chance to save them and see how such a simple act could one day help protect your family’s health. By banking stem cells now, you will be perfectly position to take advantage of so many medical advances in stem cell science that are expected to uncover breakthrough treatments in both regenerative dentistry and medicine, such as growing you a new tooth or treating diabetes, heart disease and many other conditions Precious Cells offers a convenient way to preserve your children’s own stem cells by collecting from their teeth that are naturally due to fall out or are being extracted for any clinical reasons. Whilst millions of parents have stored their child’s stem cells from the umbilical cord blood (a service that Precious Cells is also a global leading expert); for many parents, they missed this one in life time chance and felt devastated that they missed such a chance. Now Precious Cells have offered hope to such parents, by giving them a second opportunity! The cost to store dental stem cells is significantly less than that of storing umbilical cord blood and, dental stem cells are non-controversial adult stem cells (not embryonic) and a perfect match for the donor, and potentially useful for closely

related family members. Similar to stem cells from bone marrow and umbilical cord blood, which have been used for decades to treat leukaemia and other blood related diseases, stem cells from teeth have the potential to be used in a broad range of medical applications. Doctors have already used dental stem cells to successfully regenerate dental bone and treat periodontal disease, and researchers are studying how they could help treat a number of serious diseases and conditions: • • • • • • • • •

Diabetes Spinal cord injury Muscular dystrophy Stroke Myocardial infarction (heart attack) Liver disease Cornea repair Parkinson’s disease Alzheimer’s

This service is now offered at La Perla Clinic in Marlow Bottom. You will receive a stem cell collection kit, which includes all the materials needed to protect and transport the tooth overnight to the Precious Cells Lab. Once in the lab, they collect the dental pulp from the tooth which contains your own unique stem cells, perform a number of quality control steps and provide a final report to you. You will be issued with certificate of storage and a unique ID number. Then the cells are frozen at very cold temperatures until the day they are needed, when we send them directly to your healthcare provider. S.A.D? 5 top tips to beat the winter blues •

FOOD&DRINK: Avoid white rice/bread, refined sugars, caffeine soft drinks and energy drinks. These will cause massive highs and lows in your energy levels and mood. Instead choose complex carbs (like peas, lentils, sweet potatoes, parsnips, wholegrain breads/pasta, brown rice), healthy fats (found in salmon, nuts, seeds, cold pressed flax seed oil) and dark chocolate. Keep your alcohol consumption down too (sorry!).

EXERCISE: 30mins – 1hr of exercise each day has been proven to have a positive and lasting effect on mood elevation. This can be anything from walking, cycling, home exercises or dancing, to exercise classes, swimming, gym or indoor rock-climbing (Why not?)! Furthermore good muscle tone helps maintain good posture.

VITAMIN D3: Some people are very sensitive to dropping levels at this time of year. The effects include tiredness, depression, aches + pains, malaise and ill health. You can safely boost yourself with a Vit D3 supplement of up to 100 micrograms per day. If in doubt, always check with your doctor or pharmacist. It’s also important to get more natural light so get those blinds or curtains wide open at home or at the office and, better yet, get outside for a walk if it’s sunny.

PHYSICAL THERAPY: (preferably Osteopathy…but we are biased!) has been shown to reduce stress hormones and boost your happy hormones. Benefits include optimising your body’s function and energy efficiency and relieving discomfort, allowing it to focus its efforts elsewhere, such as on digestion, repair and immunity.

STRESS MANAGEMENT: is vital in improving your sense of well-being! Prolonged stress has a detrimental effect on your body’s ability to function normally and is a potent driving force in most disease processes. There are many ways to do this from practicing yoga/ meditation/ mindfulness/ chi kung, to watching less TV and reading more books, staying inspired, helping others, doing things you are good at, reliving happy memories/photos etc….

In the opposite column are our top 5 tips to beat the winter blues. Keep Calm and Carry on “Natural help-yourself” is back in fashion. The Zeitgeist is telling us that when healing ourselves, the less we fiddle with Nature’s bounty, the better for us all, and the NHS! On such promises the homeopath accompanies patients on the journey to recovery, maximising their full potential. Anyone can achieve good health, I guess the trick is to teach our patients how. By the term blood pressure people are inclined to think of a serious disease of modern civilization. Due to modern stressful life hypertension has become the “silent killer”. But this raised BP is not a disease by itself, but a sign or manifestation of a pathological process. High BP, which is also known as hypertension, seems to be more common in modern times. It cannot be denied that modern civilization has brought in its wake a great deal of adverse factors tending to raise BP: anxiety, intemperance, irregular hours, unwholesome food and many vices peculiar to modern civilization do play an important part in its causation. Treating hypertension with anti hypertensive’s and sedatives appeals to the logic of the common-medical practitioner. They are taught that those cases of hypertension with no detectable cause may be treated as “essential hypertension”, which in layman’s language is hypertension of unknown cause. However, undetectable causes of essential hypertension can be overcome by treating the individual with a holistic approach, as opposed to treating in parts, using gentle methods to alleviate any side effects. So perfectly safe. The first piece of the jigsaw is for your CAM (Complimentary Alternative Medicine) practitioner to identify the etiology. There seems to be a strong familial and genetic predisposition and a number of modifiable predisposing factors such as weight gain, salt intake and alcohol use. Then a thorough investigation on how the condition is experienced, including careful listing of Common symptoms: headache, dizziness, fainting, blurred vision, chest pain, difficulty in breathing and palpitation. Although a common complaint, hypertension is by no mean a condition to be left untreated. It is changeable, influenced by our moods, emotions and demands adequate care. Sophie Ward Bsc Hons, RSHom

Fitness for All Yoga, Tai Chi and Qi Gong were developed as sustainable and practical forms of exercise centuries ago, and all have very a similar philosophical background. Opening and stretching the body in the right way enables us to stay fit, healthy, supple and strong. By developing flexibility throughout, the blood supply and nervous system have a more pliable and open space to do their jobs more efficiently, resulting in a healthier, fitter, more energetic you. Meditation is an aspect of both Yoga and Tai Chi and requires attention and concentration whilst following simple and easy techniques. By concentrating on the techniques we gain some respite from our own thoughts and concerns. This in turn gives us the opportunity to gain greater mental clarity as a result. Any one can begin learning and become proficient in Tai Chi and Yoga in a short time. Once the basic principles and exercises are understood we can practice anywhere and at any age. I have a wealth of knowledge as I have been teaching Yoga,

Tai Chi and Qi Gong for over 15 years. The classes are small (6 -10) with careful instructions and physical corrections during class (including postural alignment) ensuring a truly personal approach at my rooms in Bourne End. GLUTEN SENSITIVITY Gluten sensitivity (also gluten intolerance) is a spectrum of disorders including celiac disease in which gluten has an adverse effect on the body. Symptoms include bloating, abdominal discomfort or pain, diarrhea, muscular disturbances and bone or joint pain. It can also cause other unexpected symptoms such as headaches and vertigo, among many others. Celiac disease is caused by a reaction to gliadin - a gluten protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and sometimes oats. Gluten gives elasticity to dough helping it to rise and to keep its shape. It is found in many staple foods in the Western diet. It is a protein composite found in wheat and other grains, including barley and rye and processed foods. Gluten is composed of a gliadin fraction (alcohol soluble) and a glutenin fraction (only soluble in dilute acids or alkali). Gluten is not naturally occurring in corn, rice, or oats. “Gluten sensitivity is a systemic autoimmune disease with diverse manifestations”: from the Lancet Neurol 2010; 9: 318-30. This means that is does not always show up as a digestive issue. Medical tests can identify celiac but not gluten sensitivity, which is why people are often told they do not have a gluten problem. WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Gluten sensitivity causes an autoimmune reaction in the body to proteins in wheat, barley and rye, which in turn causes inflammation in the small intestines and even destroys the lining of the small intestines, leading to malabsorption of vitamins and minerals vital to good health. Some people are born with genes associated with gluten sensitivity which cause the body to produce anti-gliadin antibodies. Gliadin being the protein which causes the most reactions. Research has shown that it is not necessary to have a celiac gene to get an antibody immune reaction. Symptoms of intolerance/sensitivity are wide-ranging and are not so different to those with celiac disease. It is common for those with celiac disease and gluten intolerance to have thyroid problems which could be related to the nutritional deficiencies, lack of

enzymes and inability to convert cholesterol to hormones. HOW CAN IT AFFECT YOU? Failure to absorb vitamins and minerals efficiently due to inflammation of the small intestines means that many areas of the body are deprived of essential nutrients for their proper function such as the brain, heart, muscles, bones and the immune system etc. An intolerance to gluten can even disrupt the hormones of the body, disrupting ovulation, cause painful periods, even miscarriage. There is currently no cure for celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. However, it can be controlled by ensuring that food eaten is free of gluten/gliadin. Eating substances containing gluten when there is a sensitivity or celiac disease is like eating toxic substances. The Food Standards Agency allow food manufacturers to label products “gluten-free” if they contain less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten. Calories over the Christmas Period Do you know how much you’re eating? Well! it’s that time of year again and doesn’t it come around quickly. As well as planning our present list we are also planning how to celebrate the festive season. Being born north of the border, in true Scottish tradition, we are busily filling our house with Christmas foods. Or perhaps not!!! Watch this space. On average individuals in the UK consume around 6500 kcals per day on Boxing day and Christmas day, eating all of those extra goodies. This increased eating pattern can increase dramatically from as early as the beginning of December when all of the Christmas parties begin. Many of us will also reduce our exercise as we get busy with social engagements. With this in mind its important to understand the impact of all of the extra kcals on weight gain. One lb of fat in our body is equal to 3500 kcals. If we normally need 2500 kcals each day, and eat 2500 kcals each day then our weight stays the same and doesn’t increase. However, if we eat extra kcals above what our body uses it will be stored as fat. Do The Math!!! Lets say every day between now and the new year (40 days ish) we eat or drink 1000 kcals extra in the form of Christmas goodies, more than our body needs (and that includes alcohol) then you will put on 11 lbs of fat 1000Kcals x 40 days = 40,000 /3500 (Kcals in 1lb fat) = 11lbs of fat gain Disaster! and that’s assuming we only eat or drink 1000 Kcals more per day than we need. Potentially on the holiday days we can eat 3 to 4000 more. Of course we will all be back in the gym or classes in January trying to work it off.

To work it off a 1lb of fat in an average workout that burns say 500 kcals it will take seven workouts. Is it worth it? You may well ask! The key is not to put it on!

Tis the season to be jolly ......................…….and still be able to remember it! With the delights of New Years celebrations hot on the heels of the Christmas festivities, it’s no wonder that supermarkets and bargain booze shops are stacked to the ceiling with all our favourite tipples…. After all, ’tis the season to be jolly! Like I said, jolly, not hammered, plastered, trashed or any other state of intoxication. Our relationship with alcohol has changed hugely over the years and what used to be a treat for special occasions in my parents day has turned into a socially acceptable habitual activity. It isn’t uncommon these days to reach for that ‘well deserved’ glass of wine on a daily basis, but if only it was just a glass. More often than not once the cork has been popped it is rarely replaced. It sometimes begs the question as to the actual point of having a screw cap on a bottle of wine which, in some cases, is as much use as the re sealable tape on Doritos and Minstrels. But there has been a recent buck against the trend of us happy guzzlers and new breed of ‘soberistas’ have emerged as super strong women who no longer feel the need to drink to have a good time and are smugly relishing in lack of the morning after ailments from a heavy night out. Hats off to them as I do feel there is still strong pressure to drink in order to feel socially accepted.

32

LIVING ALONG THE THAMES

My relationship with alcohol goes back to when I took one too many sips of Pomaine and then spectacularly slid from my chair on to the floor. I have no recollection of this incident, not due to my intoxication you understand but my age. You see I was two years old and that chair was a high chair. As a teenager I wasn’t really fussed with the stuff and drank whatever the trendiest drink of the time was, no matter how vile…. remember Diamond White? I then went off it altogether after I developed an embarrassing reaction every time I drank. My face and neck would explode into a hot flush; not cool when you are 18, so I steered clear for a few years. I don’t really remember drinking much between the ages of 18 and 30 to be honest. It wasn’t all a blur, it just wasn’t really a big part of my life. I didn’t go to university and so that boozy culture never rubbed off on me. Then I had children and became a fully-fledged member of the wine o’clock club, pouring myself a glass every day. This routine is so normal, wine o’clock even has it’s own twitter hashtag, the only question that arises is what time #wineo’clock actually is. On a good day 6pm on a bad day perhaps 5pm, but one thing that is almost guaranteed is that at least half a bottle will pass our lips

before we feel satisfied. Enough to feel relaxed or jolly but too much to drive. As much as I like a drink as much as anyone else I rarely go mad and occasionally I subject myself to periods of abstinence. I have endured many a dry January or Sober October but the hardest part isn’t the not drinking at all, it’s the response from others. These days with the drink aware campaigns, strong messages about drink driving, our huge knowledge of alcohol related diseases and our openness about alcoholism and its effects, you would think we would cut each other some slack about whether we chose to have a drink or not. Still I find if I chose not to have a drink, because I simply don’t fancy it, I am “boring”, a “party pooper” and “oh it’s not the same if you don’t drink.” Charming. So this festive season if you see me about I probably will have a glass in my hand but who knows if it will be a non alcoholic mocktail, a plain old fizzy water or a much enjoyed glass of the crisp cold Sauvignon Blanc. Whichever it is, it will be a little of what I fancy and no amount of pressure will sway me from my choice….and I will be jolly no matter what’s in my glass - after all, I am a ‘glass is always half full’ kinda gal…. Temple Golf Club

C

onveniently located in the heart of the Thames Valley, Temple is beautifully situated in unspoilt landscape and enjoys extensive panoramic views of the River Thames and Chiltern Hills beyond. Temple is an exceptional golf venue and the view from the 1st tee is simply breathtaking.

The course layout, designed by Willie Park Junior, is challenging and interesting; difficult enough to test the low handicap player but friendly enough to encourage those with higher handicaps. Whatever the season, the course always has something very special to offer: Spring has its many shades of green as the leaves burst into life. Summer brings a stunning myriad of colour with the wild flowers including several rare species of wild orchids. Autumn is utterly beautiful with the varying russet shades of the countless specimen trees on the course creating a stunning backdrop and, due to the fact that it is built on chalk, Temple is an excellent winter golfing venue. The original clubhouse is still in use today and provides a truly magnificent setting for a quiet drink, a snack or a meal. The clubhouse, which sits up high in a spectacular setting, is charming, attractive and comfortable and the Club prides itself on providing a friendly and efficient service in a relaxed atmosphere and comfortable surroundings. Temple is more than “just a golf club”. The beautiful setting, great attention to detail, wonderful hospitality, excellent value for money and friendly service guarantee an enjoyable and truly

memorable visit. If you haven’t yet played at Temple please call us to make the necessary arrangements for your visit. Whilst we can’t guarantee the weather, one thing that you can be sure of is that a warm welcome awaits you. New Year’s Eve in Cornwall

T

he annual dreaded decision: where to spend New Year’s Eve. If you can’t face the crowds and cost of going out, yet you can’t be bothered to organise something at home, why not do it differently this year?

Disappear down to Cornwall, rent somewhere super, be entertained in quirky Cornish style and turn a night into a proper break. If you want to keep costs down there are many classic Cornish cottages that can sleep larger groups so you can share the expense, as well as joining family and friends for an extra special adventure. Classic Cottages has nearly 600 properties in Cornwall, available either for short breaks or full weeks. Here are three fun options for New Year’s Eve:

Fish and fireworks This is the 50th year that the tiny fishing village of Mousehole, in far-west Cornwall, will wow the community with its festive spectacular: over 7,000 Christmas lights adorning its houses and harbour (running from 14 December until 4 January). On New Year’s Eve, enjoy the illuminated atmosphere with a glass or two of warm mulled wine, followed by a spectacular fireworks display. Stay at Merlin House (sleeps

six), a contemporary property with sea views across Mount’s Bay to Lizard Point. Treat yourselves to a meal at 2 Fore Street on the harbour front. The hand-picked crab salad and grilled lemon sole fillets with samphire are extraordinary. A week’s stay arriving Saturday 28 December is £166 pp (£996 total). If you fancy a spot of foraging over your New Year’s break, Rachel Lambert offers guided foraging walks. Walks are normally 2-3 hours and prices are from £20pp for public walks, or £120 for up to six adults for private forays. Email Rachel@wildwalks-southwest.co.uk or visit www.wildwalkssouthwest.co.uk for bookings and further information.

Dancing and Doc Martin New Year’s Eve in Port Isaac – the north Cornwall coastal village now famous for the TV series Doc Martin - is always a night to remember. There’s an awesome fireworks display, launched from the cliff tops on the stroke of midnight, throwing out rainbows of colour across the bay. Afterwards, locals and visitors line the streets, dancing and singing into the early hours. 200-year-old Mount Pleasant (sleeps five) overlooks the village and harbour and has the original slate floors and sloping ceilings from its fisherman’s cottage days. A week’s stay arriving Saturday 28 December is £171 pp (£852 total).

Fancy dress and miniature ponies For a small fishing town, Looe celebrates New Year in an unexpectedly large fashion. In fact, it’s listed as one of the top ten places in the UK to celebrate, even ranking third in 2007/08. Revellers assemble in the streets in their hundreds, wearing fancy dress no matter what their age – and generally rather inventive attire at that. The evening culminates in a magnificent fireworks display on the seafront. Stay nearby at Dannett Granary (sleeps ten), a beautiful barn conversion on a farm with donkeys, a tame goat, miniature ponies and owners who are happy to take children to feed the animals. A week’s stay arriving Saturday 28 December is £130 pp (£1,293 total). To help plan your visit to the South West, with plenty of ideas of places to go and things to do suggested by local experts, visit www.classicguide.co.uk. A jewel of Cornwall has to be St Ives (and is personally one of my favourite places to visit). Whether its town or beaches you crave then St Ives has the best of both worlds along with great eateries, plenty of activities for children (even in colder temperatures) and a wealth of history. Don’t forget many National Trust properties will still be decked in their Christmas finery and will be well worth a visit, see www. nationaltrust.org.uk for Cornish destinations. The ice-rink is back at the world famous Eden Project and is open until early March for a spot of skating. To book visit, http://www.edenproject. com/visit-us/whats-on/kids-and-families/ice-skating . If you need ideas for where to stay in St Ives here are a couple of suggestions:-

Boutique retreat at St Ives If you want a complete break or fancy a get away with friends and children The Tide House in St Ives, Cornwall, may do just the trick. The Tide House is steeped in history. It is the oldest hotel in St Ives and was established circa 1540. The House has been beautifully restored and renovated and today is something of a hidden gem. Rooms start at £140 per night. For more information on availability and rate, telephone 01736 791 803. Cornish Gems also has a range of luxury self-catering cottages for small and larger groups available over the New Year period in St Ives. Harriet Subramanian

5 Minutes with Jason Donovan HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN WAR OF THE WORLDS?

WAS THERE A MOMENT AS A KID ON TV WHERE YOU THOUGHT, ‘THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO DO FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE?’

It came to me a couple of years ago. I did the first season with Justin Hayward - I played the Artilleryman and the producers asked me back. I did a reasonable job, but they wanted me to do something different to try and mix it up a little bit, so I played another role, the Parson.

Well my father’s an actor, and we tend to follow our parents in a lot of ways, but I was always very realistic about whether that opportunity would come to fruition. A good career is one that lasts a long time. All careers have their ups and downs.

Jeff (Wayne) and Damien (Collier), who’s the producer, really liked it, and so they’ve asked me back for next year too, so I’m pretty happy.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR STRUGGLING ACTORS?

I love the job and it’s nice to be playing big arenas. It helps me steer myself away from doing Saturday matinees, which I don’t really enjoy that much to be totally honest.

My advice to people is just to work hard. There’s no such thing as being lucky. You make your own luck. You can be in the right place at the right time and not have the right tools to rise to the moment.

THE ORIGINAL ALBUM SCARED ME AS A KID. WHAT ARE YOUR MEMORIES? I remember that string section; the classic string line that we all know, but I wasn’t too aware of the piece beyond that. I know it was very successful in Australia; they’d done a number of tours down there. I’ve yet to be involved in one of those tours, but you never know.

THE WAR OF THE WORLDS STAGE SHOW IS PRESUMABLY BETTER THAN EVER IN THE TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT? The main driving force for something like this is certainly the music; that’s the backbone of it, but audiences have come to expect a little bit more. My experience for productions like this have always been the story, though. That’s the important piece.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE ROLE OVER THE YEARS, EITHER ON STAGE OR ON SCREEN?

36

LIVING ALONG THE THAMES

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT PLANNED FOR CHRISTMAS AND THE NEW YEAR? They all have fond memories for me. War of the Worlds is one of the highlights because last year I worked with Ricky Wilson and Marti Pellow - two people I admire and respect - and Kerry Ellis, and of course (hologram) Liam Neeson, who remains very ‘one dimensional’ throughout the whole experience.

IS THERE A DREAM PROJECT YOU’D LIKE TO DO? I love working live, but I’d love to get my teeth stuck into some more drama and TV. That would be something that would make me happy. My strengths, I believe, lie in my acting. That’s why story is always very important to me. I do love music and musicals and theatre, it’s just that I’ve done a lot of that of late.

I’ll be spending some time with my family, which I’m really looking forward to. Priscilla (Queen of the Desert) is what I’m doing at the moment, and then I go into War of the Worlds at the end of next year.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT STAGE SHOW THAT KEEPS FANS COMING BACK FOR MORE? I think it’s the story; about misfits, about people that don’t always fit in, and I think all of us in some way, shape or form are those types of people. It’s about overcoming diversity. It’s a great songbook too; it’s got some fantastic disco, camp anthems like I Will Survive, and It’s Raining Men. You don’t need to say too much more, but the story is really paramount. It’s funny, and tragic and poignant. It’s great theatre.

Christmas Survival We all love Christmas but by the time all the preparations, shopping and wrapping are done, there is little time left for ourselves. Making that last minute decision about our Christmas outfits is not wise as the rushed purchase of the top that “will do” is simply not an option. We deserve better! Here are some simple ideas on how to sort your Christmas wardrobe dilemmas as painlessly and effectively as possible.

CHRISTMAS EVE This is the time to let your hair down a little and embrace the spirit of Christmas. Regardless of where you are, be it a pub, friends’ house or your own, make sure you look great. Our favourite pick is a sparkle top worn with smart jeans, pencil skirt or well cut black trousers. And always put on a pair of heels that can be kicked off later! If you wear an outfit you’ve been seen in before, use your imagination and transform the “old” look into something new by adding accessories such as a scarf, belt or a piece of jewellery.

CHRISTMAS DAY This is a tricky one as most of us will be doing some kind of cooking/entertaining which means we have to think stylish as well as practical. A jersey dress ticks all the boxes: it’s comfortable yet smart, practical yet feminine and most importantly it looks classy. So serve the dinner, drop the apron, and let someone else do the washing!

CHRISTMAS WALK A long family walk over Christmas has become a serious tradition over the years and it’s important to stay warm and stylish. You could buy a new seasons coat and don’t forget the outfit under the coat!. The best answer to that is cashmere. It’s light and cosy, very luxurious and will keep you deliciously warm. Again, don’t ignore the power of accessories, such as a hat which can turn the coat a wow outfit in no time, regardless if it’s new or one of your old favourites.

Frank Lyman dresses - perfect for New Year’s Eve & Christmas Day Available www.SwishBoutique.co.uk

NEW YEARS EVE This is the time when we should look our best so thinking ahead is crucial. Shoes always play a major part as they will carry us on into the small hours of the morning. As far as the dress code goes the possibilities are endless, but remember to go for shapes and colours that suit you and don’t be afraid to experiment with textures and accessories that represent festivity such as glitter, sequins, shimmer and anything else that you associate with partying the night away.

Top tips for sale shopping Sale shopping can be a great time to find a bargain, but it’s easy to buy something just because it’s reduced, only to find it hanging in your wardrobe, never to be worn. Follow these top tips to ensure you make the most of sale shopping: | Before shopping, look in your wardrobe and make a list of what you really need. This will save you feeling overwhelmed, keep you focussed and stop you buying more what of you already have. | Set a budget before shopping and stick to it! It’s easy to get carried away in the sale and not realise how much you have spent until you return home. | You may love it and want it, but will you wear it? Don’t buy high fashion items that you will only wear once. Look out for good quality classics that won’t date, such as a classic white shirt, a cashmere jumper/ cardigan, a little black dress or a great pair of jeans. | Don’t buy something a size too small hoping that you will slim into it - buy the size you are now.

| Do you really like it or do you like the bargain price? Don’t be tempted by an item just because it is reduced by 75%! Would you have saved up for it if it wasn’t reduced? If so then seriously consider buying it. | Dress for success - wear sensible shoes and clothes that you don’t mind taking off and putting on time and time again. Pack a snack and a bottle of water to keep you going. | Be aware of the return and refund policy! If you are not going to try before you buy, make sure you are entitled to a refund. Some shops offer store credit or exchanges for returned sale items as opposed to a refund. | If sale shopping fills you with dread, why not shop online from the comfort of your own home instead? Spring and summer clothes are made of lighter fabrics rics which make them great for layering in the he colder months. A dark coloured sleeveless ess dress worn on top of a long sleeved shirt or t-shirt, finished off with a jumper or gillet, teamed with leggings or thick winter tights is a great outfit. | If you do want to wear an oversized jumper, pair it with skinny jeans or leggings to stop you looking like a snow-woman! Detox to Retox for Christmas

I

t’s really crucial to look after your hair in the festive season as we work harder at this time of year and party even harder, which all takes it toll on our hair. Start with a fresh new colour, I love revisiting my colour consultations at this time of the year with my clients as the nights have drawn in and we’re all feeling a little gloomy, a new colour is just the lift we all need. I start by using a colour fan to assess a client’s skin tone; your skin colour changes throughout the year so it’s a great way to check if your current colour is still working for you. It’s important to prepare the hair with a clarifying shampoo o ry before colour as it will clear the build up of pollutants from every day life; pollution, car fumes, smoke from fires and a build up of styling products cling to the hair shaft so we need to address this before anything else. It also gives me a clean palette to work from, making the eventual new colour last longer and look fresher. At this time of year to give you the full Retox I recommend finishing your service with a deep colour treatment as this will give you long lasting shine and make your colour look incredibly rich. Treat yourself to the correct shampoo, conditioning and styling products for your hair as this will ensure your Retox will last as long as possible over the winter months. LOOKING AFTER YOUR HAIR DURING THE PARTY SEASON AND AFTER If your hair is looking a little dry and dull after all the straightening, backcombing and product build up we recommend the following: • Use a deep cleaning shampoo one day followed by your normal shampoo the next day. Repeat as required. • Pep up your dull hair with a coloured shampoo such as Nearestto (choosing your shade) and if you are a blonde we recommend a purple based shampoo such as Motibello which will refresh your colour. • Add a few drops of oil into your daily conditioner and it will turn it into a luxury treatment, making your hair feel soft and shiny again. New Albums just in time for Christmas

GARY BARLOW SINCE I SAW YOU LAST Gary Barlow’s last solo album, Twelve Months, Eleven Days, failed to make a real dent in the UK charts in 1999, but The X Factor head judge and Take That frontman has “relit” his fire with this latest release. Things have changed over the last 14 years, and the 42-year-old now lets his music do the talking. Opening with the jaunty Requiem, the 12-track album, with all songs written by Barlow, features Face To Face, a dancey duet with Sir Elton John, poignant ballad Jump, Americana-style More Than Life and toe-tapping track Small Town Girls. Barlow shows off his vocals in 6th Avenue with its rousing chorus and piano melodies, and goes emotional on Dying Inside. Barlow is set to reunite with his Take That bandmates next year for a new album, but with pop songs this good, let’s hope Since I Saw You Last won’t be the last of Barlow’s own music.

BOYZONE BZ20 A listen to Boyzone’s new album is filled with nostalgia. Without band member Stephen Gately, who died in 2009, BZ20 reminds fans what could have been. Many were devastated when the boyband, dubbed Ireland’s answer to Take That, announced their split in 2000, but the ‘boys’ - Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch, Mikey Graham and Gately - reunited in 2007, and are now celebrating their 20th anniversary with a new record. BZ20 accompanies the quartet’s 20th anniversary celebrations, which sees them embarking on an arena tour starting in Belfast on November 29. Their fifth album is a mixture of covers including The Tony Rich Project’s Nobody Knows and Everything I Own by Bread and original tracks such as lead single Love Will Save The Day. It’s a good listen for fans, but with the notable exception of Gately’s vocals, it’s more tinged with a sadness than celebration.

Hands up who loves their bed!! On these dark winter mornings it’s pretty hard to prize myself out of my warm snuggly bed and since getting his new bed my young puppy Fergus is much the same! Suddenly it’s his favourite place in the world to be – he curls up at night and snores very contentedly and during the day after he’s worn himself out running around the fields he grabs a chew and settles down for a bit of R & R….hard life hey? The bed he’s fallen in love with is made by Poi Dog ® and the design really encourages a good snuggle. The bed is oval shaped and the chunky foam walls make him feel secure whilst the inner cushion is really well padded and comfy! The material is water resistant (so Fergus is allowed to snuggle down even after a wet winter walk) and the cover is removable and washable – perfect! The medium bed currently retails at £29.99 on www. purelydogbeds.co.uk and is perfect for Labrador/Boxer/Collie size dogs. A large version is also available to suit bigger breeds. We’ve got one of these gorgeous beds, in black, size medium, to give away to a lucky reader. All you need to do is send us an email with your name and contact details by 31st January to Office@ AlongTheThames.co.uk and one winner will be chosen at random. One entry per household only

Heating gets households hot under the collar

ARE YOUR HOME'S UPVC WINDOWS DISCOLOURED? Replacing them will cost thousands of pounds, but there is a much cheaper and less disruptive way to give them a new lease of life. You may not realise it, but you can paint UPVC windows (and doors) and make them white again, or any other colour you choose. Start by giving the window frames a good clean - try Sandtex PVCu Cleaner (ÂŁ7.49 for 500ml, Homebase), then sand with fine sandpaper and wipe clean. When the frames are dry, apply Sandtex PVC-U Primer (ÂŁ22.99 for 750ml, www.ebay.co.uk) to create a suitable surface for the topcoat - Sandtex does some lovely exterior satins and glosses, which can be used for the topcoat.

One in six (16%) house holders regularly argues with someone they live with over their heating, according to new research. Northern Ireland was named by insurer AA Home Membership as the "heating spat hotspot", with nearly one quarter (23%) of people surveyed there saying they argue over the heating at least once a week. Scotland came in second place, with almost one fifth (18%) of people there saying tempers heat up as the temperature drops. The South West was found to be the most "chilled out" region in the survey of more than 2,000 people, with just one in 10 (10%) consumers there saying they have heating-related disagreements. Three-fifths (60%) of those who said they argue said differences of opinion about what the temperature should be are the most common reason for squabbles, while more than one quarter (27%) row over the price of energy bills. The preferred temperature among those surveyed was 20C.

Repair & beautify the exterior of your home

If your home has a painted exterior, it won't stay looking good forever because, inevitably, the elements will take their toll. The easiest way to give it a new look is to paint it a different colour, using a high quality masonry paint, such as those by Sandtex or Dulux. Even if you're happy with the existing colour, repainting it can work wonders. Discoloured, peeling and patchy paint isn't pretty or practical and can lead to damage that's expensive to repair. While you can rarely be as adventurous with the colours you use on the outside of your home as the inside, you don't have to restrict yourself to white, cream or magnolia. That said, you do need to consider what will go with your neighbours' houses, if there any restrictions (such as planning ones) on the colours you can use, and what suits the style and period of the building. For some homes, though, a lick of paint won't cut it - and only a radical makeover will do. Sadly, the latter decades of the 20th century weren't our finest in terms of architecture, and some homes from the 1950s onwards just are not that attractive. If your home is among these, an architect or building company will be able to help you transform the exterior. Detached houses are the best candidates for an extreme exterior transformation, because there isn't an adjoining reminder of the old look, but properties of all shapes and sizes can benefit from an expert redesign.

Rendering and/or cladding (with wood or wood-effect panelling) can make a big difference to the exterior, as can changing the widows and doors, adding balconies and extensions, and re-tiling the roof. Adding dormer windows and replacing unattractive concrete roof tiles with slate ones can go a long way to giving your home character and kerb appeal. In fact, exteriors can be transformed beyond recognition and while this type of work often isn't cheap, it will certainly add value and make your home more attractive and saleable. Before you start changing the exterior though, remember it's essential to find out whether planning permission is required . The area in which you live, as well as the type of building can affect your plans (for example, listed buildings usually can't be altered without listed building consent from the council). If you live on 'designated land', which includes conservation areas, you also may not be able to do what you want with your home's exterior wooden windows are usually preferred by the local council. In some cases, permitted development rights have been removed from houses (flats don't have permitted development rights), which means everything from fitting new windows to painting the front door needs planning permission. In practice, not everyone will apply for planning for everything they should, but if you break the rules, you risk the council's wrath.

Identity theft attempts 'rising' Nearly half of financial frauds being uncovered involve criminals trying to use someone else's stolen personal details, a credit checking company has warned. Experian said that identity theft is a "significant and rising threat", accounting for 46% of financial frauds detected this year, which is almost double the rate of just over one-quarter (27%) of cases seen in 2012. It urged consumers to keep a close eye on their personal details, which criminals often use to open accounts which they can then use as a "springboard" to take out lucrative credit. Experian said that although attempts at identity theft are on the increase, financial firms are getting better at picking up frauds at the point when the criminal tries to makes an application.

Veteran Trees A veteran tree is a tree which, because of its great age, size or condition, is of exceptional cultural, landscape or nature conservation value. There are more than 6000 ancient and veteran trees known in the Thames valley and the number is increasing everyday where more are being discovered. As well as the living part of the veteran trees their fallen branches, plus hollow trunks and limbs all contain decaying wood, an important habitat for wildlife such as beetles, ants, wasps and centipedes to name but a few. Veteran trees are of enormous value to woodland providing a fascinating link with the past and a vital key to the future, survival of many woodland dwelling creatures, plants and fungi. The holes, fissures and hollow trunks associated with these ancient trees provide roosts for bats and birds. The insect larvae in the deadwood provide food for the birds. For the old trees to thrive, it is important that some deadwood is left on the forest floor. The nutrients in the deadwood decompose and are recycled into the forest’s soil where they are taken up by the roots of living trees. Caring for ancient trees is a challenge. The main threats to veteran trees are competition from younger trees, over mature pollards splitting apart, root complication, shade created by surrounding trees, pollution and climate control. Reducing the crowns of ancient trees helps to prevent them splitting apart. Crown reductions are performed on selected trees to prevent them becoming top heavy and to encourage growth from lower branches. Any species can be veteran trees but maybe the most commonly known is the Oak tree. An Oak tree is said to grow for 300 years, rest for the next 300 years and then spend 300 years retiring gracefully. The Oak is home to more species of insect, mammal and bird than other tree in Britain.

River Rovers

Jenny Kahan©

Whilst the River Thames is a rich ecosystem of birds, flowers, plants and wildlife it is also a vibrant commercial and leisure water way. From families out having fun in motorboats, pleasure steamers taking holidaymakers to Windsor and passing traffic through the lock, this is a busy stretch of the river that we love being a part of and calling home.

We sat on the banks and watched as the emergency services went to work and were amazed to see the club back up and running within three days. On 31st October this year, we watch as the site was demolished, saw the diggers get to work and were impressed to learn that by summer 2014 there will be a brand new, state of the art water sports hub in place of the old Clubhouse.

Another big part of Marlow on Thames is rowing.

This will provide the community with a myriad of water sports including rowing, sculling, canoeing, para-canoeing, para-rowing, triathlon as well as open water swimming.

Marlow is the birth place of Sir Steve Redgrave whose extraordinary career in this competitive sport led to the rower winning an unprecedented five Gold Medals in consecutive Olympic games. Quite often we sit up near the imposing Sir Steve Redgrave statue that stands proud in Higginson park over looking the Thames and we look out towards Marlow Rowing Club. The club is set on the southern bank of the Thames opposite the town and alongside the iconic, white bridge. Founded in 1871, the club is one of the main rowing and sculling centres in England and members, as well as Sir Steve Redgrave, have represented Great Britain in the Olympic Games and World Championships. Sadly on 3rd August 2011 a major fire broke out at in the middle of the night at the clubhouse, which dated back to 1896, with devastating consequences. The left hand side of the building plus many boats, irreplaceable historic pictures and artifacts were destroyed. The rest of the club survived but there was serious smoke damage.

62

LIVING ALONG THE THAMES

The cost of the project is £2.35m and a grant of £1 million has been secured from Sport England but that leaves another £200,000 to be raised. Whilst Marlow Rowing Club, Marlow Canoe Club, Longridge Canoe Club, High Wycombe Triathlon Club and Henley Open Water Swimming Club are working to help fundraise, anyone can support the campaign and help put Marlow Rowing Club firmly back on the River Thames map. Full details about how to get involved, including the fundraising ‘President’s Dinner’ presented by Sir Steve Redgrave CBE, on Friday 7th March 2014 at Crowne Plaza Marlow, can be seen at www.marlowrowingclub.org.uk. Osborne’s Fork After Henry Tudor defeated Richard III at Bosworth Field in 1485 the Treasury was all but empty, and Henry set about restoring the nation’s finances by raising taxes. Architect of the strategy was John Morton, who was both Lord Chancellor and Archbishop of Canterbury! He reasoned that if you looked rich you could clearly afford to pay, and if you looked poor you must be hiding your wealth – either way you could afford to pay more tax; you were caught on Morton’s Fork! In 2013 George Osborne as Chancellor faces similar problems, and continues to search for new ways of raising tax. In the 1500s tax collection was farmed out (we would call it ‘privatised’) to Messrs Empson and Dudley, but today HMRC is wielding Osborne’s Fork. 2013 has seen HMRC focussing on Inheritance Tax (IHT) as a means of raising tax, threatening long established ‘loopholes’. They are also blurring the gap between ‘tax evasion’ (strictly illegal) and ‘tax avoidance’ (legal but naughty) to a point where honest Citizens cannot easily tell whether prudent tax and financial planning for themselves and their families is ‘legal’ or not. The latest weapon is the GAAR (general anti-abuse rule) which allows HMRC to identify tax mitigation strategies which they don’t like and intend to ‘stop’. Specific ‘schemes’ threatened by changing law or HMRC practice, include • Double Trust Schemes (to hold the family home) • ‘Excluded Property’ Trusts • Disallowance of some loans as deductions from the value of assets to be charged to IHT

HALF OF CONSUMERS DON'T CHECK BANK STATEMENTS Three-quarters of people check their change when paying by cash, but only half bother to make sure their bank statements are correct, a comparison website has found. The findings come despite 19% of 2,000 consumers, surveyed by comparison website GoCompare. com, saying they had been a victim of fraud in the past where money had been taken from their bank account. Some 73% of people said they check they get the right change handed back to them at the till, but just 55% said they properly go through their bank statements and/or credit card bills. Meanwhile, 57% of people said they ask for a receipt for everything they buy.

• Setting up multiple ‘Pilot Trusts’ to receive life policy or pension death benefits • Discounted Gift Trusts • Loan Trusts • Limiting the value of ‘qualifying’ insurance policies to generate tax free funds on maturity to meet IHT to premiums of £3000 Anyone with existing arrangements of these types should at least be reviewing their IHT planning to see if they are affected. So moving on from IHT plans that seemed respectable only two or three years ago, what can still be done to preserve something for your children or other chosen heirs? Options may be – • Making lifetime gifts of cash, investments or property absolutely (ie not in Trust) and live for 7 years. How about gifting shares in the family holiday home? • Invest in agricultural land, hold it for at least 2 years, (50% IHT relief) or become an active farmer (100% relief). • Invest in trading businesses, (shares quoted on the AIM market, if you do not want to manufacture widgets yourself?) and hold them for at least two years (100% relief) • Transfer surplus income, or use the £3000 annual gift allowance, every year. But IHT planning cannot be undertaken in isolation from your personal circumstances – do take advice, and you may be surprised at what can still be achieved. Windows on our worlds As we go through life, we come across many different types of people. Have you ever noticed the person who is always talking about the past? The past is their main focus of attention and they often move the conversations they have around to how things used to be. On the other hand, what about the people who are so focused on the possibilities of the future and devote their energies to what could be, instead of what used to be. Or, how about those that do little of either, but instead live for the moment; seeming only to care about now! The language these three groups use is noticeably different. When they meet, they may find they are at “cross purposes.” They look at the world through different windows (or filters), and their worlds appear quite different. People who use the same filters tend to connect better with each other; where they don’t there is a tendency to not get along. The ability to recognise and use different filters is a learnable skill. In organisations, it is really helpful to have a balanced mixture of all the filters of time. I recall working with one established team, noticing a very strong tendency to focus on the future, on their plans and what it would mean for them to realise their goals. This was so prevalent that they had little time for thinking about what they had done in the past; about what had worked for them, and what had not. As the quote from George Santanya goes “those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it.” I would like to tell you that they made lots of mistakes that could have been avoided if they had learned from the past. Sadly, this was not the case. So focused were they on their future plans, they never got round to focusing on now. They found it really difficult to focus on what they would do right now to take the first steps to achieving their grand ambitions. They were known by other teams in the same organisation as “The Dream Weavers” – and were not seen as particularly helpful or popular. I had been

Around 8.8 million people are "over-indebted", bted", meaning they have fallen at least three monthss behind with their bills in the last six months or they feel el their debts are a heavy burden, Government-backed d body the Money Advice Service (MAS) found. But just 17% of this group said they are getting tting advice to help them deal with their debt. Twofifths (40%) said they did not feel able to talk to their creditors and 44% did not know where to turn for help. asked to work with them; to see if I could help them change their behaviours. When taking on the assignment, I asked whether the organisation could utilise “Dream Weavers” in an effective way. Who did the dreaming for the organisation? Unsurprisingly, the responsibility for dreaming about the future lay with the founder/business owner. That person later formed an informal group with several of the “Dream Weavers” to think up different possibilities for the organisation, meeting once a quarter. My core assignment remained – how to get the team to learn the lessons of the past and to look at the practicalities of the here and now so they could implement stuff effectively. It took a little time – behaviour change, as anyone who has given up smoking, or lost weight will tell you, is not quick and easy – but the team got there, becoming more balanced. As we approach the end of the year (for those focused on the past), the start of a shiny New Year (for the future-focused) and the constant whirl of activities that all seem to come at once at this time of year, perhaps it is time to consciously try to think of all three filters. To take time to draw lessons from the past year, to dream and make bold plans for the New Year, and to have a blast in the here and now! For me, doing all three really is having it all! Phil Walker

the UK, did not recognise they had a problem. One third of over 50s expect to delay retirement Some 31% o of people aged over 50 expect to delay their retire retirement, up from 27% when similar research was ca carried out a year ago. The res research for the Saga Annuity Service, among more th than 10,000 people, found that people livin living in the South West expect to carry on wo working for the longest, while those in the No North East expect to retire the earliest. Roger Ramsden, chief executive of Saga SServices said: "While some people delay retirement for financial reasons, we're finding an increasing number of people are staying in the workforce because they enjoy what they do, they like to keep their mind and body active and because they enjoy socialising with work colleagues."

PORSCHE LAUNCHES MACAN COMPACT SUV

Porsche has unveiled its new Macan compact SUV, which has been tipped to take its sector by storm. At 4.68 metres long and 1.92 metres wide, the smaller brother to the hugely successful Cayenne is a considerably more manageable size than its full-size sibling, as well as being more affordable and still packed with performance. Two closely-related turbocharged petrol engines are being touted by Porsche as the initial flagship powerplants. The Macan S uses a 3.0-litre unit with 336bhp and 339lb.ft, while the 3.6-litre Macan Turbo puts out 395bhp and 406lb.ft. Performance figures for the Turbo model include a top speed of 165mph and the ability to sprint from 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds - a length of time that falls by 0.2 seconds if the optional Sport Chrono pack is specified. A diesel model is offered as the ‘touring’ Macan, with a larger cruising range linked to its lower fuel consumption. The Macan S Diesel can return more than 46mpg for a range of 611 miles, despite weighing almost 1.9 tonnes and boasting both 254bhp and 428lb.ft - more torque than the Macan Turbo. Four-wheel drive and tyres as fat as 255mm as standard, with 295-section rubber optional, mean the Macan can call upon massive traction to give it a real-world performance edge over any of its potential rivals. At its launch at the Los Angeles Auto show, Porsche vowed to build the Macan to the same standard as its 911. The Macan will actually share factory space with the Cayenne and Panamera models at the firm’s Leipzig facility. A vast array of options and customisations will be made available to Macan buyers from the outset. In the UK the Macan S and the Macan S Diesel will both cost £43,300, with the Turbo starting at £59,300.

F-TYPE COUPE

Hot on the heels of the critically acclaimed F-Type Roadster, Jaguar has unveiled the hardtop version: the F-Type Coupe. Wowing audiences at both Los Angeles and Tokyo motor shows, the tintop version of the British luxury car builder’s new model is expected to hit UK showrooms next March. The car, styled by long-standing Jaguar design boss Ian Callum, gains the same V6 petrol motor as the Roadster, however there’s a tweaked V8 for the flagship F-Type R boasting a considerable 542bhp. As with the Roadster, all coupes share the firm’s now familiar eight-speed auto gearbox, although the R-spec car gains a number of trick electronic packages to better manage its extra power. Being a coupe also means more boot space than the drop-top F-Type, and Jaguar engineers are promising an even more engaging drive thanks to the Coupe body’s added stiffness. Start saving now, as the base Coupe will be priced from £51,235 while the range-topping R model will run to £85,000

MINI APPEARS ACROSS THE GLOBE Fresh from its world debut at the Cowley plant where it will be built, the new third-generation Mini has made its Asian debut at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Modern Mini’s are extremely popular in Japan where its strong British identity and high degree of personalisation hold strong appeal. The new Mini will initially be available in Cooper, Cooper D and Cooper S forms with new engines on all models; a three cylinder petrol, three cylinder diesel and four cylinder petrol respectively, each using turbocharging for maximum efficiency and performance. With a six-speed manual gearbox as standard plus the option of a six-speed automatic on all models. Inside the Mini has a revamped cabin with a choice of new displays including a large 8.8-inch monitor, more space for passengers and luggage and clever LED lighting. Keyless go is now also standard across the range. The new Mini goes on sale in the UK in the Spring of 2014, with prices starting at £15,300 for the Cooper, £16,450 for the Cooper D and £18,650 for the Cooper S.

BERKSHIRE CHARITY ABC TO READ HAS RELEASED THEIR ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2012/2013.

Policing diaries Dear readers Christmas time is nearly here and as they say” tis the season to be jolly”. As your local Neighbourhood Team we are here to help keep you and your homes safe during this festive season. During the run up to Christmas Thames Valley Police is working with Community Safety Partnerships (and Santa) to help reduce the number of burglaries and incidents of crime across the area. Our winter burglary campaign is in full swing with a range of activities being carried out. These include officers and PCSOs patrolling neighbourhoods, burglary hot spots and delivering “Heres a Bright Idea” postcards highlighting houses left in darkness which are at potential risk. We will also be attending train stations, shops and schools to speak with the community whilst holding crime prevention Roadshows. Details can be found online by visiting the force website. Burglary can have a profound and long lasting effect on people’s lives, don’t let it be you! Help us to help you by following our top festive crime prevention tips. 1. Help drive thieves’ crackers this Christmas, don’t leave new presents and purchases in your vehicle. 2. Don’t leave those expensive new presents on show at home; keep valuable items out of sight. 3. Lock your doors and windows, if you have a UPVC door make sure you have double locked it. Keep keys away from doors and windows at all times. 4. When you are out celebrating this Christmas, use a 24 hour segment timer at home. These cost from as little as £5 and are readily available. They can be used with a lamp, radio or TV to give the impression that someone’s home. 5. After you have opened your pressies don’t display for all to see by leaving empty boxes outside your house, take to the recycling depots to dispose of. From your local neighbourhood team made up of police officers, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), Sergeants and our lead Inspector we would like to wish you all a happy and crime free Christmas. Among other figures, the charity reports an impressive 98% improvement in reading performance and 97% improvement in children’s attitude towards reading. A staggering 100% of schools who responded, recorded that the children who had benefited from an ABC to Read volunteer mentor showed improvement in their overall achievement, 54% of whom showed significant improvement and 23% demonstrated outstanding improvement. The primary school children selected to work with an ABC to Read mentor are identified by the schools as those children who are struggling with their reading and would benefit most from one-to-one support. 28% of the children that the charity surveyed are eligible for free school meals and the largest percentage of the children (29%) is in Year 2. The report communicates the findings from half of the 60 schools that the charity currently works with. Foundation last month, the charity are still looking for new schools to join the mentoring scheme and volunteers to be trained as reading mentors, enabling a further 24 Berkshire children to get the direct support they need to improve their reading For more information contact: abctoread@btconnect.com FESTIVE FAMILY FUN WITH THE NATIONAL TRUST AT CLIVEDEN Take time out from the hustle and bustle of a packed high street, and indulge in a day of traditional festivities at Cliveden near Maidenhead.
