The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor Tonight we welcome Hebburn Town back to St James’ Park for the first time since their relegation from the 1st Division. On our return to the Northern League, we suffered heavy defeats home and away to tonight’s visitors. Much has changed since then, so it would be nice to get a positive result against one of the league’s favourites for promotion. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------On Saturday we face Seaham Red Star on Non League Day. With no Premier League football on the day, it is a day used nationally to get people out of the house and to take in a game of local football. Last season we faced Albion Sports and achieved our highest home attendance of the season (129). It would be great to beat that this Saturday. Surely a target of 150 isn’t unrealistic? Posters are going up in some shop windows, and the game is being advertised online. Get yourself along again on Saturday. Your support is greatly appreciated by the club. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The game against Billingham Town seemed to be straight forward in the 1st half. 2-0 up at half time, and in relative comfort without really looking like conceding. 2nd half just went mad for around 20 minutes. It was one of the most open games I’ve seen for going backwards and forwards, both sides having chances. In the end a 4-3 scoreline could quite easily have been 8-7. 3 points though, that was the most important thing. We had to stop the run of defeats. It’s something that has been a bad habit over recent season where we go on long losing streaks. Lets hope we don’t go back to those days again any time soon. And credit to Billingham Town, who (unlike most clubs) brought a few away fans and put a bit away behind the bar. Follow Alnwick Town on Twitter, Facebook and our Website. @alnwicktownafc , www.facebook.com/alnwicktownafc and www.alnwicktownfc.co.uk

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents HEBBURN TOWN Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You will soon be able to enjoy a hot drink and food in ‘The Tea Hut’. We hope to have this up and running mid August. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

Tom McKie

Today’s Opponents - Hebburn Town Player Profiles Gary Rogers Gary re-joined the club last season in a coaching capacity; following a goalkeeping crisis Gary stepped up and provided a much needed confidence to the young defence with some outstanding performances. Gary is a Hebburn Town stalwart who has given great service and support to the club over many years. Last season’s “Club Man of the Year”. David Smith David still only 22 broke into the team last year and gave some sterling performances at both right and left back; he is a tenacious tackler who is very keen to move forward and with his speed and drive and will be part of a strong defensive squad Alistair Downey Ali is a classy centre half and defender who has outstanding anticipation; he is very quick and at times makes the game look very easy, Ali joined Hebburn from Birtley and also had previous experience at Benfield. His performances last year attracted interest from several teams and he joined Ashington just before the end of the season. He has gladly re-joined the club and will be pivotal in the coming season. Chris Smith at only 22 is a centre half who was outstanding in his first season at Hebburn in the Northern League first division and will be central to Scott and Davy’s defensive plans. Can also play anywhere along the back four with two good feet and a good footballing brain. Can also play up front. Last season’s “Players’ Player of the Year”. Ross Toward the 22 year old signed as a full back in the close season from Jarrow FC in the Wearside League. Ross has been outstanding in the pre-season friendlies but mainly as a central defender. He is very quick and his tackling and distribution are great. He has certainly made his mark and offers his manager a number of playing options. Scott Garrett is a vastly experienced centre half; at 40 Scott is a fitness specialist and is fit as lads half his age. A great motivator Scott will drive the team forward and most opposing attackers will know they have been in a game as he will challenge for every ball. Previously played at Hebburn and recently with Scott at Birtley Town. Phil Holgate a 24 year old goalkeeper previously with Birtley. Phil is a talented young keeper who unfortunately has been carrying a knee injury and missed all of last season. Now back to full fitness this young and very agile keeper will be a great asset to the goalkeeping squad. Lee McMahon a 26 year old wide midfielder; Lee is very quick and tricky and is comfortable with either foot. Had a great first season at Hebburn last year in the first division; ended the season as club captain and both the Committee’s and Manager’s “Player of the Year” awards. Previous experience at Jarrow Roofing and Ryhope CW in the Northern League. Mark Costello a 27 year old midfielder who can also play out wide. Very quick, strong and capable of adding to the goals tally. Mark joins from Brandon two seasons ago where he was “Player of the Year” and last season was part of Hebburn’s midfield squad playing an attractive brand of football. A great team player, much appreciated by his team mates. Scott Wallace Very strong, skilful and enthusiastic defender who has an excellent left foot. Great defender but also loves to press up field. Again very much an integral part of the defensive line and after gaining experience with a solid performance in the first division, is expected to shine in this season. Kris Summers Kris joined the club last season from Sunderland RCA and played in almost every game at full back or centre half where he is equally comfortable. Also chipped in with a couple of goals. Kris is still only 21 and has a great future ahead of him. Channon North the tall striker with a good touch signed last season from Seaham Red Star where he was a regular scorer over the last two seasons; before that a member of the very strong Reyrolle team in the Alliance. Ended the season as leading scorer. Alan Pegram a great and exciting signing in the close season “Peggers” brings a wealth of experience and skill to Hebburn Town’s midfield; very strong, fit and skilful and will bring the best out of his team mates. He was a major influence in Hebburn Reyrolles successful team and last season was at Seaham Red Star for a spell. Michael Watson neat and tidy midfielder signed from Ryton and Crawcrook and has prior experience at North Shields; made an impressive start with Hebburn in the first division where he competed well against some top class players. Still only 21 Michael will learn from this and is certainly one for the future at Hebburn. Neil Scott signed from Seaham Red Star towards the end of last season; normally a very solid full back with a cultured left foot Neil turned in some great performances at centre half and has shown that he is very comfortable in this role. Had a previous spell at Hebburn before going to college. Jamie Rowell young eighteen year old defender; a product of Hebburn Town Juniors; showed great promise in several outings against experienced opposition last season and has played well in close season friendlies. Has a great future ahead of him. Andrew McIntosh a very strong winger who scored 15 goals from midfield 3 years ago when with Birtley. Unfortunately Andy has been out a long time with damaged ankle ligaments. He has trained hard during the close season and played well in the warm up matches and hopefully will be fully fit for the real thing. Liam Bayles still only 22 Liam is a winger who scored 16 goals in 19 games for Jarrow FC last season and will provide an excellent attacking option with his excellent left foot and skill Shaun Reay although only 25 the last season’s acquisition from Seaham Red Star has a lot of experience and has a good goal scoring record. Shaun is a very quick and a great striker of the ball who also holds the ball up well. His previous clubs include Darlington, Newton Aycliffe, Blyth Spartans and Dunston Dan Smith the oldest of the Smith brothers at 24 Dan has a great engine and great speed and he has attracted the interest of some top clubs but followed Scott Oliver from Birtley where he was extremely influential. An excellent debut season in the first division for Hebburn. Callum Smith has just turned 19 and he too showed great promise in the first division last season with his speed, stamina and tenacity. Probably suited to a midfield role but has the capacity to play wide at the back or up front. Callum also played at Birtley with Scott. Craig Malley signed just before the season started; can play anywhere and is fast and tenacious in the tackle. Craig was a member of Mark Collingwood’s successful Hebburn Reyrolle team in the Alliance and followed Mark to Seaham Red Star where he has played for the last two seasons.

Today’s Opponents - Hebburn Town Hebburn Town 1912 - 2013: A Brief History Hebburn was very different back in 1912. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men, the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour and the town, 11 years earlier, had welcome a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle. Reyrolle opened an engineering works, initially employing just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures and export to 70 countries and be known worldwide. The company also started a football team, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history who provided the sports ground on which the Northern League side still plays. Football has played a major part in the life of the town, a cornerstone of its history.Probably it also helped the population forget the harshness of day-to-day life, families of ten and more in insanitary, two-up two-down houses. When the last pit closed in 1931, it had claimed the lives of almost 200 men and boys. There’d been plenty of teams before 1912, of course, notably Hebburn Argyle – kicked off in 1882 by Fr Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derbies with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000.The Geordie town also had shinty and curling clubs and even an annual Highland Games, organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society. Alphonse Reyrolle had actively encouraged his workers to take part in sport, including “barefoot” football, and formed the Employees’ Benevolent Association. The team formed in 1912, elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League, was suitably booted, however. They progressed, flourished in the 1930s, had a wartime season in the North Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points. The Tyneside club then had 28 seasons in the Wearside League, and won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968. In 1988, following the demise of the iconic engineering company A. Reyrolle, the name was changed to Hebburn and application made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved and other clubs canvassed. The break, however, came when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding to play elsewhere. The team which had been fifth in the Wearside League played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, won promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 but were relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. They won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000. In season 2011/12, Hebburn reached the FA Cup final qualifying round – a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places – and secured promotion in third place after a fascinating and exciting final ten games which took the team up to the first division alongside Team Northumbria and Gillford Park (now renamed “Celtic Nation”). In 2012/13 Hebburn Town met their target of staying in the first division after a nerve racking end to the season. During the close season however manager Paul Bennett decided to leave the club for Jarrow Roofing along with his assistant Dean Nicholson, Unfortunately the team followed suit and in June the club had to start from scratch; two exHebburn players Scott Oliver and Davy Bell took up the challenge and the new management team successfully assembled a squad of mainly young players with a base of experienced players to give the team a good mix. Unfortunately, the very young and somewhat inexperienced side could not avoid relegation although they played with spirit, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the season. The team received many plaudits for their playing style and attitude and also achieved some notable results; although relegated the team got stronger as the season progressed. Most of the squad, now with first division experience, have stayed with the club and this has been bolstered with more recruits during the close season.

A Blast From The Past Alnwick Town 1-0 Hebburn Town - Report Courtesy of the Northumberland Gazette AN 81st minute strike from in-form James Swordy secured a much needed three points for Alnwick Town on Saturday. Town's second win of the league season saw them leapfrog visitors Hebburn Town and Whickham and into 14th place in the Albany Northern League Second Division. Swordy stuck his eighth goal in six matches to give the home side a deserved 1-0 victory in a hard fought affair at St James Park, and a welcome clean sheet much to the relief of Manager Mac Belisle. He said: "It was a welcome three points. Again I have got players that are still suspended and players injured. It was a little bit of a make shift team. We had right sided players that are left footed and left sided players that are right footed. "It is a difficult time. But by the end of the month everyone will be back and that will be a right problem for me. Another three points would put us just below half way in the league." Fielding a side bearing one change from that which lost narrowly at Whickham, Martin Snaith in for Mark Cockburn due to work commitments, the home side got off to a good start, Adrian Metcalf heading a corner narrowly over the bar after just two minutes. Alnwick settled into the game quicker than their opponents but struggled to carve out clear chances in the opening twenty minutes. Hebburn's first chance fell to Urwin who broke clear of the home defence but put his shot wide from 18 yards. In the 27th minute, Town's injury curse struck again, with ill Donny Clark having to be replaced by Ian Cook. Two minutes later, Hardy went clear for Hebburn but his 18 yard effort was easily saved by Wayne Belisle in the home goal. Swordy went close for Alnwick in the 31st minute, placing a shot just over the bar from the edge of the area, with the Hebburn keeper stranded. In quick succession, the visitors went close on three occassions, only to be denied by Neil Catlow and Belisle. With seconds to go to the interval, Alnwick came very close to taking the lead, Paul Yeadon glanced a header wide of the post having been fed by Steve Green. Half time arrived, Alnwick had started well but the game became stifled in midfield as both teams battled to get the upper hand, meaning chances were few and far between. Minutes into the second half, Belisle did well to punch clear twice as Urwin attempted to get on the end of crosses for the visitors. After 51 minutes, a great long ball from Jason Belisle released Green whose left foot shot was saved by the keeper. With pressure from the home side beginning to mount, Swordy turned superbly in the area but Ord was equal to his left foot effort. On the hour mark, Yeadon produced a great run from his own area and won a corner. From the resultant kick, Jason Belisle's goalward header was cleared by a defender. Two minutes later, Yeadon crossed from the left for Snaith, who volleyed wide from 15 yards with the keeper beaten. Hebburn responded with a volley from Hardy which hit the side netting and a shot from Robinson which went narrowly wide. In the 69th minute, Yeadon's glancing header was saved by Ord shortly before Ben Keenan came on for the under-the-weather Ross Thomson. The breakthrough came for Alnwick when a long throw from Cook was headed by Keenan onto the inside of the post. The ball ricocheted out to Swordy, who stabbed home from 12 yards. A minute later, Swordy came close to extending the lead with two efforts, heroically saved by the keeper. Four minutes from time, Keenan came very close when his dipping shot went inches over the bar. The final whistle sounded and although the game was bogged down in midfield and far from pretty, Alnwick, three points better off, will not care. Fife Plant Hire Ltd man of the match: A Metcalf.
