Back home again to St James’ Park, this time against Crook Town who were relegated from the 1st Division last season. It seems like they’ve had a bit of a sort out over the Summer so will be a different team to the side that struggled in the league last year.

We’re looking to bounce back after 2 defeat in a row. Worst thing to come from the Chester defeat was the injury to Tony Brown. Hopefully he won’t be out for too long.

I couldn’t make the Thornaby game but heard we gave a good account of ourselves. Same again today lads, just with the right result.

It’s nice to welcome Crook Town to St James’ Park today, hoping that their misfortunes from last season are over and that they can provide us with stiff competition to set us up nicely for our run of tough games to come in the next 10 days.

It always tough for the players learning new methods and how to cope with lots of new , young faces and I ask you fans to carry on with your great vocal support?

We travelled down the Thornaby on Tuesday night with Tony Brown injured from a bad tackle in the Chester-le-street game, and Brad McClelland missing with knee problems, but both Willis brothers were available.

Looking to bounce back with a good, honest performance after not being on par against Chester-le-Street and creating our own downfalls. We were brilliant but didn’t have the cutting edge to win the game at Thornaby.

Even their manager’s first comment Was how we tried to play the right way.

Our time will come. We need patience, belief, and a bit of luck.

Club History



Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks.

In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s.

The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times.

In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott.

Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance.

A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.



Club History

The club now faces its 5th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance.

But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club.

The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year.

In 2015-16 we look forward to another positive year, with a new management team in place and fresh ideas for the future.

Crook joined the Northern League in 1896 and first won the Amateur Cup in 1901 beating Kings Lynn 3 - 0 at Ipswich after a 1 - 1 draw at Dover Court in Essex.

In 1913 Crook toured Barcelona to help establish football as the main sport in the region of Catalonia instead of bullfighting. Feeling was so high against this that King Alfonso of Spain who had hoped to attend the three games but couldn't do so because of the attempts on his life. Crook man Jack Greenwell organised the tour and went on to become the first English manager of Barcelona until the mid-thirties when he took over the Spanish national side until the civil war. He managed Peru in 1938 which capped off a remarkable life for the son of a miner! There were two further successful tours to Barcelona during the 1920-21 & 1921-22 seasons.

The infamous 'Crook Town Affair' where several players and officials were suspended for making illegal payments to amateur players made front page news in 1928.Crook became a semi-professional club during the 1930-31 season as Crook F.C. and reached the third round of The F.A. Cup for the only time during the 1931-32 season. Centre forward Colin Cook scored a remarkable 72 goals that season.

The 1936-37 season saw Crook revert back to amateur status and became Crook Town.

During the 1945-46 season Crook Town become Crook Colliery Welfare. In 1949 Crook reached the semi-final of the Amateur Cup losing 3 - 0 at West Ham to Romford after a 2 -2 draw at Roker Park.

In the early 1950's gates of 10,000 were the norm for cup ties.

The highest recorded gate was 17,000 plus v Walton and Hersham in a 0 - 0 draw. That season Crook were involved in the first non-league cup tie to be shown live on TV on a Saturday afternoon that saw Crook winning 3 - 1 at Romford in front of a 13,000 crowd.



Opposition Info

Crook won the Amateur Cup in the 1953 - 54 season playing in the longest cup final ever v Bishop Auckland with 200,000 in attendance over the three games. The final scores for the three games were 2 - 2 A.E.T. at Wembley, 2 - 2 A.E.T. at St. James Park and 1 - 0 to Crook at Ayresome Park.

Crook played Derby County in the first round of the FA Cup during the 1955-56 season drawing 2 - 2 at the Millfield, but losing 5 - 1 away in the replay.

Crook were League champions and Amateur Cup winners beating Barnet 3 - 2 in the final at Wembley in the 1958-59 season.

In the 1961-62 season Crook once again won the Amateur Cup beating Hounslow Town 4 - 0 at Ayresome Park after a 1 - 1 draw at Wembley.

During the 1962-63 season Crook had a two match tour of Norway. Crook defeating a South Norway XI 4 - 3, but were beaten 3 - 2 the next day to Vikings.

Crook were Amateur Cup winners in the 1963-64 season beating Enfield 2 - 1 at Wembley.

During the 1964-65 season Crook beat Carlisle 1 - 0 in the first round of the F.A. Cup, but lost 1 - 0 to Oldham Athletic in the second round.

In 1976 Crook became the first English club to tour India playing six games. A gate of 100,000 watched Crook play the Indian national side, but they were beaten 1 - 0 in 90 degree temperatures.

During the late 70's there was an increase of interest and also brief revivals during the 80's and 90's and the early part of the new century, but without the help and encouragement of Sir Tom Cowie the club would not have survived.

Last season was probably the club’s worst season on record and may well have seen the demise of the club but for the return of Vince Kirkup as Chairman who will need no introduction around the North East football circuit.



Match Report

Thornaby 1 - 0 Alnwick Town (Tuesday 18th August 2015) Alnwick Town fell to a narrow defeat away to Thornaby on Tuesday night in the Northern League.

The game was played in the pouring rain, with Alnwick missing both Tony Brown and Brad McClelland through injuries, it was another night of missed opportunities which proved to be the away side's downfall.

Thornaby scored the only goal of the game on the half hour mark with a header from a corner, but either side of that there was only one team in it.

Alnwick played their best football of the season so far, causing problems for Thornaby's defence, with Danny Lowes regularly getting in behind their defence. Only poor finishing and good goalkeeping kept Alnwick at bay.

In the 2nd half, Ross Gair forced a great save from the goalkeeper. Despite continuous pressure late on, an equaliser just wasn't to be found.

After the game manager Jon Egen said "I can't ask anything more of the lads. The tempo we played at combined with the quality of our passing and movements is as good as most 1st division sides however we just need a little more luck in front of goal at the moment but that'll come. I thought Ross Straughan had his best game for us tonight and Chris Glass making his full debut showed promise."
