Stanford Baseball School and Games Camp Weekly Camps June 19-23, June 26-30 & July 17-21

AGES 7-12 YEARS BEGINNER TO EXPERIENCED PLAYERS DIRECTED BY THE STANFORD BASEBALL COACHING STAFF

STANFORD BASEBALL SCHOOL Morning Session Participants will be coached in several baseball skills, fundamentals, and team concepts. Members of the camp will receive instruction in a variety of areas including hitting, infield play, outfield play, pitching, catching, rundowns, double plays, sliding, position priorities, and base running. All batting instruction and batting drills take place in Stanford’s covered baseball cage facility. Participants will hit every day in the cage area, in the morning school segment and the afternoon games segment.

STANFORD BASEBALL GAMES CAMP Afternoon Session In the Games Camp players are grouped by age and ability and teams are formed. Teams play against one another in a coach pitched game where the goal is to see that ball “put into play.” Emphasis is placed on catching and exchanging the baseball cleanly, and knowing what to do with the baseball, given the score, the outs, and where the baserunners are located. Many of the skills learned in the Baseball School will be put into game situations. Each team will play together and coached by the coach all week. 50% of each afternoon session is devoted to games and the other 50% to hitting in batting cages and developing further defensive baseball skills. Games will be played on Sunken Diamond. Q Camps

held at Stanford Varsity Baseball Field (Sunken Diamond). Q Coach to camper ratio is 1 coach for every 9 campers. Q Campers can attend multiple sessions. Q Campers must either bring lunch from home, or purchase lunch at Sunken Diamond Q We do offer an “extended care” option from 7:30 am – 9 am, and/ or 4 pm- 6 pm (we charge $15 per hour for extended care). Q Campers must provide their own glove, shoes and suitable baseball attire (either baseball pants or sweats/long pants). REGISTRATION: ONLINE REGISTRATION IS AVAILABLE AT STANFORDBASEBALLCAMP.COM 4 • Summer Camp Connection 2017

g n i r u t Ven e d i s t u o summer for the

Local camps offer a variety of outdoor enrichment programs by Anna Medina

A

s the days slowly start getting longer, it’s natural to start thinking about summer and spending time outdoors — especially in the Bay Area, which is chock full of activities best experienced outside. For local youth, there are plenty of summer camp opportunities along the Midpeninsula that combine enrichment programs with the outdoors.

Most summer camp registrations are either open now or will be soon. With so many options on the table, the most difficult part of enrolling might be deciding which program to try. Camp activities in the area range from those in the water and on the water to those that take place on sport courts, mountain trails, along the bay’s shoreline and more. Here are a few that provide fun and educational outdoor escapes. Wheel Kids Camps is all about expe-

riencing the outdoors on two wheels. The program focuses primarily on recreational bicycling for experienced riders and basic road safety for beginners. The organization, which has been around almost a decade, started in San Francisco and is coming up on its fourth season in Palo Alto. “We live in a fantastic area for being able to bike, not only as a way to get from Point A (continued on page 8)

to Point B, but also (as a) recreational bicyclist,” said Peter Phillips, general manager of Wheel Kids Bicycle Club Inc., which operates the summer program. Phillips, who has four boys and is an avid biker himself, learned about the camp from a local teacher after his son broke his leg in second grade when he was involved in an accident with a car while riding his bike. Phillips was looking for educational programs with a focus on how to bike safely when he learned about the summer program. Wheel Kids offers two main summer camps: Two Wheelers Camp that teaches beginners — typically those between ages 5 to 8 — how to ride; and Adventure Riding Camp for kids ages 6 to 14, which is broken down into different skill levels for those already experienced with riding on two wheels independently. The Adventure Camp exposes kids to riding on different surfaces, using different bike trails, navigating lane positioning, using proper hand signals, following etiquette and interacting with other bikers and car drivers on the road. But, summer camp is also intended to be fun — something that’s planned into the itinerary. “It’s summer, so we want the kids to have fun. Part of it is bikes as a means of transportation, part of it is exploring ... It’s something you can use for the rest of your life; We hope we’re instilling that,” Phillips said. Activities include excursions to local landmarks such as the Baylands, NASA Ames Visitor Center, Moffett Field, Shoreline Lake and the Stanford University campus. These trips often incorporate educational enrichment. In the past, students have participated in a docent-led outdoor sculpture tour at Stanford and art projects at the Palo Alto Art Center. Christy Moisin’s son Finn will be attending Wheel Kids Camp for the third time this summer. She initially enrolled her two sons after they moved to the Bay Area and started riding their bikes more often. “When we moved here, the kids knew how to ride but they mostly rode at the park; we didn’t use biking for commuting purposes,” Moisin said. Visiting the Velodrome in San Jose ranks among Finn’s favorite camp activities, and Moisin said that she noticed the camp fostered confidence and independence in her sons. “They go by themselves now. They go to school on their own, they ride over to Ada’s Cafe -- it really does give them a sense of independence,” she said. For those looking to join a sports team, Menlo School in Atherton offers a variety of athletic camps from lacrosse to triathlon to water polo. “The summer is a great time for kids to try new sports. Of course, it’s also an ideal time to play the sports they know and love,” said Menlo Director of Athletics Kris Weems. This is the third season Menlo will offer its summer athletic camps to local youth as well as those from out of state. No matter what sport, the coaches tailor their camps to various levels, (continued on page 10)

based on the students participating. The goal is for kids to come away from the camps having had a great, positive experience, said Pam McKenney, sports information director at Menlo School. “That’s what summer is about,” she added. Shoreline’s Boathouse camp in Mountain View takes full advantage of the bright, sunny days and warm weather with its windsurfing, sailing and paddle lessons. As the only sailing camp in the South Bay, the classes are popular, with many students returning year after year, said camp director Edi Sanchez. Sanchez said this year, Shoreline is adding a “Paddle Adventure Camp,” which features kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards and kayak polo. The class was created because of increasing interest in paddleboarding and high demand for paddleboard rentals. Not only do students learn how to sail, windsurf or paddleboard, they also develop other transferable skills. Sanchez noted that self-confidence ranks high among them. “Once they go out and master these skills, ... they gain the confidence to try other things,” Sanchez said.
