Hillview Middle School: 299 eighth-graders graduate A total of 299 eighth-graders graduated from Hillview Middle School on June 10 in a ceremony held in the Menlo Park’s school’s Hillview Quad. Associated Student Body president Jack Larkins began the ceremony with the pledge of allegiance. Principal Erik Burmeister, presiding over his final graduation as Hillview principal before moving into his new role as assistant superintendent, addressed the students, teachers, families and guests. The six student speakers were Nicolas Vazquez, Hannah Kopisch, Claire Bozdog, Max Kaufman, John Mills and Eliza Foley. Danielle O’Brien, Hillview vice principal, and Willy Haug, associate principal and incoming principal, presented student awards. These include departmental awards, faculty awards, and the Presidential Award for Academic Achievement, given to 109 students with a 3.5 GPA or above during their three years at Hillview. For the 28th year, the Jeff Sorrells Memorial Award, a $2,500 scholarship, was presented to an eighth-grader by Diane and Morrie Sorrels. The three final-

ists were Brian Neal, Griffin Voss and Luis Rosas. Luis was presented the award by 2011 winner Victoria Ellis. The winner will use the college scholarship upon graduation from high school. This award was established by the Sorrells family in honor of their son, Jeff, who was a student at Hillview. In addition to the Sorrells Award, a new tradition has begun. For the first time this year, Debbie DeVoto, former teacher of Jeff Sorrells and retired Hillview counselor, gave each candidate a $300 scholarship. After the awards presentation, Ms. Watts presented the students to the core teachers, Superintendent Dr. Ghysels, Mr. Burmeister, and school board President Maria Hilton to receive their diplomas. The Hillview Concert Band, directed by Richard Vaughan, provided musical accompaniment, including the traditional processional, “Pomp and Circumstance.” After the ceremony, a reception for graduates and guests

Mid-Pen awards 27 diplomas Submitted by Randy Johnson, Mid-Peninsula High School. id-Peninsula High school awarded 27 diplomas to its senior class during graduation ceremonies on May 30 at the school’s campus on Willow Road in Menlo Park. Nathan Spreng, Mid-Pen alumnus and professor at Cornell University, gave the graduation address. He is currently working in Cornell’s Department of Human Development, where he conducts research on how the brain remembers, imagines, and maintains attention throughout a lifetime. “I know that my two-and-a-half years at Mid-Peninsula shaped my life so that I could become who I am today,” he said in his address. “In Mid-Peninsula’s community of respect, the teachers gave me hope and confidence — and I carry that to this day.” Student speakers were graduating seniors Real Chen, Vanessa Cuevas, Stacie Foreman and Eli Feuerman. in the school gym, which was magically transformed for the evening into a “Rockin’ Rodeo.”

Woodside kids learn business skills What if you had opened a lemonade stand in the local park and suddenly your supplier had no lemons for you? That was one of the problems presented to fourth-graders at Woodside Elementary School as part of the school’s third annual Junior Achievement Day. Each year parent volunteers spend part of a school day teaching students in kindergarten through fourth grade about how to run their own businesses. This year’s event was May 29. Woodside Superintendent Beth Polito said the program teaches lessons about preparing for the work world, starting a business, and developing financial skills needed to run a business. The program “is a wonderful way to allow our very diverse and interesting parent population to share their work experience,” Superintendent Polito said. — Barbara Wood

The three newest Eagle Scouts in Portola Valley Boy Scout Troop 64 are Alex Duff, Kevin Kelly and Weston Bourgeois. Alex is a senior honors student at Saint Francis High School. He earned 22 merit badges and, most recently, was leader of his patrol. His favorite merit badges were small boat sailing and auto maintenance. For his Eagle project, Alex worked with the congregation of Christ Church in Portola Valley to restore five redwood benches on the church’s property. He raised money for new lumber and supplies, then led a scout crew through the multi-week project. Benches were dismantled, removed and refurbished, then rebuilt and refinished back on site. Kevin Kelly, a junior at Summit High School, noticed the school’s campus did not have enough places to sit, talk and eat. For his Eagle project, he built picnic tables and benches for the school. Kevin raised more than $1,700 for materials, and organized 13 people who worked 152 hours to complete the project. Kevin also earned 22 merit badges, and has held various leadership positions including patrol leader. His favorite merit badge was first aid, which helped him realize he is interested in a career in the medical field. Weston Bourgeois, a freshman at Woodside High School,

played on both the junior varsity football and freshman basketball teams. He has earned 22 merit badges and held various leadership positions in his patrol, recently serving as assistant senior patrol leader. His favorite merit badge was rifles. For his Eagle project, Weston converted a quarter circle sandbox into three garden beds for Footsteps Childcare, a preschool for low-income residents. After

designing the garden beds for 3- to 5-year-old children, he purchased the materials and led a group of scouts in the construction of the raised play tables and garden boxes. Later the ground was prepared with rock and the elevated garden beds were installed. Weston led a dozen people who put in a total of 112 hours on the project. Troop 64 is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Menlo Park.

Animals in Art “Butterscotch Bun” from East Bay Rabbit Rescue is one of the featured artworks in Teresa Silvestri’s June exhibit, “Animals in Art,” at the Portola Art Gallery, located in the Allied Arts Guild at 75 Arbor Road in Menlo Park. Ms. Silvestri, who works in watercolors and pen and pencil, says rabbits are her favorite subject. In July the gallery will showcase original works of art that are smaller in size. The diminutive original paintings and photographs make owning an original piece of art easier for the first-time buyer.

Summer concerts in Portola Valley The Lara Price Band will provide the music for the first of Portola Valley’s 2015 summer evening concerts on Thursday, June 18, on the grass at the Town Center, located at 765 Portola Road. The band plays “rootsie rock’n blues,� according to the town’s Cultural Arts Committee, which sponsors the concert series. The concert will run from 6 to 8 p.m. and will overlap with the Thursday farmers’ market,

which runs from 3 to 7 p.m. in the nearby parking lot of the Historic Schoolhouse. Picnics, including with alcoholic beverages, are OK, as are chairs, children and wellbehaved dogs, say organizers. Blankets and warm clothing are recommended. Concert plans include two food trucks. The Cultural Arts Committee has scheduled two more Thursday concerts on the lawn: July 16, with Stan Ekhart and The A-Team, and Aug. 20 with the

local teen band Walk the Line, and Rock’n Ronny Crawford and Rick Louchard.
