Below the Ansel Adams photo is the 2010 rephotograph by Alan McGee of Portola Valley. Rodin’s artwork. Mr. McGee recalled the meeting: “He came up and introduced himself, and we’re chatting away and he says, ‘Do you know anything about rephotography?’ I said, ‘Well, a little bit.’ And he said, ‘Why don’t you photograph the Allied Arts Guild?’” The pair agreed to work
together and print their work in book form to be sold for the benefit of the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. A guild historian, Millie Campbell, came up with a folio, held together by brass paper fasteners, containing 12 camera studies taken by Ansel Adams. Using the same angles and lighting as much as possible,
Mr. McGee rephotographed nine of the images, and Dr. Creasey shot the remainder. The undertaking was not without a sense of adventure and revelation. While attempting to reprise the angle of an aerial view of the Cervantes Court, Mr. McGee notes in the See FOOTSTEPS, page 23

booklet: “I used a step ladder to approximate Ansel’s camera position for this photograph. While on the ladder I realized that Ansel had been standing on the tile roof with his view camera and tripod. I decided that my top of the ladder position was close enough.” The idea was to include the original shots along with the new ones, but that was easier said than done. “We managed to take (the folio) apart and scan everything ... and it came out just horribly,” Mr. McGee said, laughing. The photos in the folio were screened images (known as halftones), and scanning those can be problematic. After a bit of research, he found a way to improve the outcome by creating multiple scans of the originals. “And we were in business.” The comparison of old with new reveals the careful preservation of architecture at Allied Arts Guild during the course of nearly 85 years: As the booklet notes, most of the changes involve landscaping and safety features, such as the addition of handrails and fire sprinklers. Mr. McGee, 78, an engineer by trade, had creative urges “nibbling at the edges.” In 1974 he earned a master’s degree in photography from the California College of Arts and Crafts. His choice of specialty was practical: “Photog-
raphy was probably the only thing I was good at. I’m not really good at drawing.” The medium combined his interest in chemistry and art, he said, and grew as he learned more about the history of photography and its early practitioners. Then there was “the magic of the darkroom,” watching the print take form. But thanks to technological advances, “my darkroom is a junk room now; I can’t even get in there,” he said. Ansel Adams, whose work he described as “very realistic, but augmented in terms of contrasts,” was an early influence, along with abstract photographers. And he has long been intrigued by the architecture of the Allied Arts
Guild itself, particularly the frescoes and layout. “It’s all been a good adventure,” Mr. McGee said. The 39-page booklet will be available in approximately four weeks. While the initial print run will be small — about a dozen copies, according to Mr. McGee — he’s hoping the guild will support a larger run if interest is high. A On the cover: A view of the building that now contains a restaurant. The 1931 Ansel Adams photograph is on the bottom and the Alan McGee rephotograph on top.
Ansel Adams’ images are scans of halftone reproductions made from his negatives.
In this rephotograph by Alan McGee, a balcony has been replaced by a window, and a chimney that was atop what is now a restaurant is gone. Mr. McGee realized that Ansel Adams was standing on a slanted tile roof when he took his photograph. Mr. McGee decided that standing on a ladder was close enough. Stolen Blue backpack Our car was broken in to last night(3.3) at Florence and Lytton in north downtown Palo Alto and our backpack stolen. The backpack had a surface tablet, dvds, and sentimental items. We know the tablet/dvds is probably gone, but we’re hoping that rest of the backpack’s contents were dumped nearby. If any one has come across a blue backpack with faded orange pulls in the area, we’d really appreciate it.

Said sale will be made without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the Note(s) secured by said Deed of Trust, with interest thereon, as provided in said Note(s), advances if any, under the terms of the Deed of Trust, estimated fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligations secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of this Notice of Trustee’s Sale is estimated to be $692,074.69 (Estimated). However, prepayment premiums, accrued interest and advances will increase this figure prior to sale. Beneficiary’s bid at said sale may include all or part of said amount. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept a cashier’s check drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the California Financial Code and authorized to do business in California, or other such funds as may be acceptable to the Trustee. In the event tender other than cash is accepted, the Trustee may withhold the issuance of the Trustee’s Deed Upon Sale until funds become available to the payee or endorsee as a matter of right. The property offered for sale excludes all funds held on account by the property receiver, if applicable. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive
remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call Auction. com at 800.280.2832 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Web site address www.Auction. com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA08004260-141. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
