Windrider Film Forum returns to Atherton By Elena Kadvany Special to the Almanac

T

he much-acclaimed Windrider Bay Area Film Forum returns next week to Atherton. Three films will be shown Thursday through Saturday (July 12, 13 and 14), at the Performing Arts Center on the campus of Menlo-Atherton High School, 555 Middlefield Road in Atherton. Following the screenings, the audience can engage in conversations with the filmmakers. “With the help of the filmmakers, the conversations tend to peel away the layers of the film and explore the film’s message or impact on culture,” said Windrider executive Shannon Fischer. The three film forums are: ■ “Rising From Ashes” (7 p.m. Thursday, July 12), a documentary about the first Rwandans National Cycling Team, whose members were personally impacted by the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. T.C. Johnstone, producer and director, will participate in the discussion. ■ “The Hammer” (7 p.m. Friday, July 13), the true story of the first deaf wrestler to win a national collegiate championship. Oren Kaplan, the director, will participate in the Q&A session along with the film’s costar, deaf actress Shoshannah Stern. There will be American Sign Language Interpreters present for the discussion portion. ■ “Red Dog” (7 p.m. Saturday, July 14), the true story of a dog’s impact on a mining community in the Australian outback. Lead actor Josh Lucas and screenwriter Daniel Paplitz will discuss the film with the audience. Windrider’s arrival in this area is intimately linked to Fuller Seminary, a multi-denominational theological seminary with a campus on the grounds of St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park. Three years ago, Menlo Park resident Meritt Sawyer attended Windrider Film Forum in Park

City, Utah, where the forum was started by a Fuller Seminary student and staff person as part of the Sundance Film Festival. As a member on the Fuller board of trustees, Ms. Sawyer said she realized the cultural value of the forum. She became determined to bring Windrider to Menlo Park. MP Mongolian BBQ opens in Menlo Park New buffet-style restaurant moves in next to BevMo. ■

By Elena Kadvany Special to the Almanac

E

l Camino Real has a new tenant: MP Mongolian BBQ has opened its doors in the spot formerly home to Deeelish in Menlo Park, next to Beverages & More. The new restaurant, located at 700 El Camino Real, opened three weeks ago. Owner Jenny

Ma ran Su’s Mongolian BBQ in Santa Clara with her husband for about 32 years and had many customers clamoring for a Menlo Park location, said manager Lue Tao, who also happens to be her son. The Menlo Park restaurant serves up Mongolian BBQ in an all-you-can-eat buffet style, where customers pay a base price ($11.99 for lunch, $13.99 for dinner) that allows them to fill their plate as many times as they like. It also offers beer and wine.

When asked what their most popular dish is, Mr. Tao said that lies in the eye of the beholder. “Anything you can imagine is basically our signature dish. It’s up to the customer, so that’s our main selling point.” The restaurant, which seats about 70 and has seven employees, is open Monday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. The telephone number is 853-1118. Catering company Deeelish didn’t go very far; it’s now at 425 El Camino Real. A

The Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR) including the Response to Comments was made available to the public on June 15, 2012. The FEIR was posted on the Town Website www. ci.atherton.ca.us, under the heading Atherton Library Building Project. Hard copies are available at Town Hall, 91 Ashfield Road; the Permit Center, 93 Dinkelspiel (Station) Lane; and the Atherton Library, 2 Dinkelspiel (Station) Lane. Additional hard copies are available for purchase at the Atherton Permit Center. Description: The approximately 0.3-acre project site is situated within the existing 22-acre Holbrook-Palmer Park, located at 150 Watkins Avenue in the Town of Atherton, San Mateo County. The proposed project would be sited within the general building area of the existing Main House, which is centrally located within the interior of the park. The proposed project includes demolition of the existing Main House and construction of a new two-story, up to 13,500-square-foot library and associated improvements. Some of the existing uses (e.g., meetings, classes and events) currently accommodated at the Main House would be absorbed by other facilities within the park. For the purposes of this environmental review and based on available information, this environmental analysis assumes that the existing library building, located at 2 Dinkelspiel (Station) Lane, would be repurposed for storage, Town offices or other civic use already occurring in the general vicinity of the existing library. The proposed project would require the following discretionary approvals: Environmental Review; General Plan Amendment; Holbrook-Palmer Park Master Plan Amendment; and Zoning Ordinance Amendment. The project is located at 150 Watkins Avenue in Atherton (Assessors Parcel Number 061-310-100). Public Review Period for the Environmental Impact Report: A Draft Environmental Impact Report has been prepared for the above described project pursuant to the provisions of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). A copy of this document was available for public review at the Atherton Town Hall, 91 Ashfield Road, Atherton, CA from March 23, 2012 to May 7, 2012. Planning Commission Recommendation: The Atherton Planning Commission completed its review of the FEIR on June 27, 2012 and has recommended the City Council certify that: 1. The Final EIR has been completed in compliance with CEQA; and 2. The FEIR reflects the lead agency’s independent judgment and analysis; and 3. The FEIR was presented to the decision-making body, which reviewed and considered the information in the FEIR before approving the project. IF YOU CHALLENGE the City Council’s determination on this matter in court, you may be limited to raising only those issues you or someone else raised at the Public Hearing described in this notice, or in written correspondence delivered to the City Council at, or prior to, the Public Hearing. For further particulars, reference is made to the project file maintained at the Atherton Town Hall, 91 Ashfield Road, Atherton, CA, 94027. Any attendee who wishes accommodation for a disability should contact the Building Division at (650) 7520560 at least 48 hours prior to the meeting. Date Posted: June 29, 2012

College Essay Number One,” a film by Zachary Clarence, a Menlo-Atherton graduate and former Menlo Park resident, will be shown July 14 as part of the San Francisco Frozen Film Festival’s “Best Youth Films of 2012.” The film follows the life of a teenage girl Calliope, who is out of place in the traditional high school environment, and her journey to find acceptance in a different culture at the local skate park. “College Essay Number One” was inspired by the college essay of his friend, Ana Markdasilva, which highlighted the diversity of the Bay Area, and by his difficulties with his own essays. Mr. Clarence became interested in film in high school. “I had a huge passion for film ... (was) obsessed,” he remembers. “I watched way too many movies a week.” He heard of the Frozen Film Festival (named after a Goethe quote) for the first time in high school, when he submitted a movie made by the M-A drama club, which Mr. Clar-

ence founded. It was a rendition of Romeo and Juliet, and was “so much fun” but also “pretty awful.” It did not win. Zachary Mr. Clarence Clarence is a junior at Boston University, having graduated from M-A in 2009. He said he plans to continue making movies, as well as pursuing an acting career, and is already at work on his third film, to be titled “Can you hear me?” “College Essay” was previously on a one-month tour to high schools across the country and into Canada, he said. It also won the Teen Truth Film Festival’s “Truth Award.” The film will be shown as part of the Frozen Film Festival at the Roxie Theatre, at 3117 16th St. in San Francisco, at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, July 14. The “Best Youth Films” section of the festival, including “College Essay,” is 85 minutes long. Visit FrozenFilmFestival.com for more information about the festival. A

A Petition for Probate has been filed by: MARK F. PRATURLON in the Superior Court of California, County of SAN MATEO. The Petition for Probate requests that: MARK F. PRATURLON be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. The petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. The petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held on July 27, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. in Dept.: 28 of the Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo, located at 400 County Center, Redwood City, CA 94063. If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. If you are a creditor or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within four months from the date of first issuance of letters as provided in Probate Code section 9100. The time for filing claims will not expire before four months from the hearing date noticed above. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Petitioner: /s/ Mark F. Praturlon 477 Quartz Street Redwood City, CA 94062 (650)430-7683 (ALM June 27, July 4, 11, 2012)

Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held on August 1, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. in Dept.: 28 of the Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo, located at 400 County Center, Redwood City, CA 94063. A Request for Special Notice form is available

You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
